Making happy little divs.
Questioning reality pixel by pixel.
Hello. My name is Austen Cameron. Welcome to the show. I woke up this morning, and I decided I'm gonna start a podcast, which is actually a joke because I've been thinking about this for quite a while. I have been inspired by a couple of podcasts.
Austen:One is an older one called Developer Tea, and there's another one called Notes on Work. They're great podcasts. I think I've been thinking about doing something similar, for a while. So, kudos and a shout out to both of those great podcasts. Give them a listen.
Austen:But this is my kind of, talking to myself podcast, if you will. And, yeah. So the question is, you know, when you're starting something, obviously, you have to get stuck on the first thing, which is what are we going to call this thing? And which is another joke because it's never good to get stuck on a name. You can always change a name later and whatnot.
Austen:But, actually, in this instance like, normally, I'm the guy who brainstorms tons of names. Right? Like, I brainstorm tons of names. Not usually, I don't get stuck on it. I just start the thing and then worry about that later.
Austen:But when I'm like, okay. We actually need to name it now, I get stuck on that. Do you guys get stuck on that? Do you folks get stuck on that? I don't know.
Austen:But in this case, a funny name already came to me about this podcast and what to call it. And I think we'll we'll see. The working title right now is called Chasing Rectangles because, really, that's kinda what we do as web developers. So that's the work yeah. Anyway, I think that's funny, because if you think about it, what what do we do?
Austen:What do we actually do as web developers? Especially front if you're doing front end at all, this you'll understand this, but we're just making rectangles, nested in other rectangles. Some of them you can click on. You know? But, like, think think about the funny things we're fretting about.
Austen:Like, we're think we're fretting about, oh, this rectangle needs a slightly, I mean, you know, slightly two pixel different shadow. It's just funny. It's just funny. Right? Like, other trades, people are like, okay.
Austen:Well, that building's not gonna stand up if we don't, you know, have a load bearing beam here. Meanwhile, we're like, well, that border needs to be rounded on the corners, and it's not. It's just funny things. So chasing rectangles is kind of a funny, absurd name for something, and, I think it might stick. I don't know.
Austen:Also, when you think about it when you think about it, with any sort of computer related design, rectangles are everywhere, everywhere, not just on the web. If you think of three d design, if you look at, like, a wireframe mesh of a of anything designed in CAD, usually, it's made of triangles or, most often in in, like, games and animation, it's it's made up of they want the mesh the original mesh to be in quads. Right? Rectangles of some sort. So it you know, they're I don't know.
Austen:They're everywhere. They're everywhere. Right? Okay. So what is this podcast actually about?
Austen:Good question. I'll tell you what it what it is. It's gonna be honest. It's gonna be opinionated. And, see, I don't I don't even know what it's about.
Austen:It's just gonna be about life, thoughts I have. The episodes are gonna vary in length. Yeah. Let me tell you what it isn't gonna be. It's not gonna be strongly opinionated.
Austen:I'm not gonna say things like React sucks or anything like that. I mean, I might. But, generally, opinions can change, except for that one. I couldn't couldn't resist. So, anyhow, it's probably not gonna be weekly.
Austen:It's probably not gonna be overly technical, and it's probably not gonna be on video yet. We'll see. That being said, who knows what it's gonna be? Just excited to be doing it. And, you know, it's funny.
Austen:We were talking I was talking about rectangles, and there's a lot of lot of sites or design studios or things throughout my career and my I've just been in love with web development since I was a kid. So I'm gonna talk about some of that, and, we'll dig into maybe on other episodes. But some of my early inspirations, like, there was a a lot of these were flash sites. Right? So there was something called two advanced studios, the number two advanced.
Austen:Right? And I think they're still around, but they always made these incredible immersive, like, design experiences. It was like, I mean, it was like, you can't imagine how good their rectangles are. K. So, like, two advanced studios, I don't know, that they really left an impact on me.
Austen:There was one called n Studio, n dash studio. And they always had these amazing, like, computer illustrated you know, one of them was, like, this kind of bamboo garden Japanese theme, and everything moved, and it you know, it was just amazing. Animation. I've always been fascinated by animation. But, yeah, I mean, I I kinda cut my teeth on sites like DeviantArt and Pixel two Life and all that stuff.
Austen:And so rectangles, on steroids is what what I'm talking about. Yeah. So that's it. That's probably about it for this episode. My goals for the show are, simply to try to get better at public speaking, maybe get better at audio and potentially video editing, and just be public about what I'm working on, thoughts I have, and it it'll be a fun way to document life and my mindset, throughout it.
Austen:So and and maybe in that process, maybe, I can come to some conclusions, have some nice outward discussions with myself, and, through all of that, perhaps give back to the world a little bit by sharing some of my experiences, and, maybe some of those will resonate with you. So, I look forward to recording the next one, and I hope all of you folks have a wonderful, nice day. Bye.
