welcome Your art is a spell and it will
change your life and the world around
you Hello my magical community Welcome
or welcome back to your art is a spell
If you've been tuning in to this
miniseries on financial empowerment for
artists you know that we are breaking
the chains of punk damage and limiting
beliefs that we've inherited around
money And today we are diving deeper and
I'm sharing five transformative money
mindset shifts that have helped me go
from a minimum wage call center burnout
to building a thriving and sustainable
creative life And trust me if I can
shift this so can you So without further
ado here are five money mindset shifts
for artists Shift number one from fixed
resources to malleable
possibilities I used to really believe
growing up that money was this rigid
thing if you weren't born with it or if
you didn't have some fancy degree or
background that you'd never make more
than $13 an hour But little by little
I've come to understand that resources
are not fixed They're
malleable In my journey I've taken
little experiments I've tried things on
bit by bit And over time I've realized
that money time and opportunities are
things that we could stretch we could
bend and that we can even create from
scratch As artists one of our biggest
gifts is that we have a strong practice
in
imagining what has yet to exist What if
we turn that same creative gift towards
our financial reality Shift number two
art versus business to art and business
I used to think of course like many
artists that the evil capitalist machine
was trying to swallow everything it
could consume including my own art It
was something that I saw as fully
outside of myself and as something that
had nothing to do with my art practice
Sound familiar But over time I've really
come to realize that creating business
structure for your art practice doesn't
cage your art It actually protects it
and it fuels it Your business becomes a
frame around your creative practice that
lets you work and exist in the world on
your own terms When I started to build
systems within my practice whether it
was tracking my expenses contemplating
how to price my artwork learning how to
have conversations about money with
other people I realized that I started
to actually have more freedom to make
the weird magical and experimental art
that I love to make Shift number three
from passively waiting to strategic
positioning Raise your hand if you've
ever thought to yourself "My work is
good enough People are going to just
find it." Yeah I had to unlearn that too
So a few episodes back I have an episode
where I talk about all the different
jobs I've had before arriving to my
dream job which I'm living right now And
I funnily enough forgot an interesting
job in that list I used to also be a
vocational counselor when I lived in
Portland Oregon And I helped people who
were from a wide array of backgrounds
including folks who were undocumented
who didn't have a college or high school
degree and folks that had recently come
out of the prison industrial complex
This was an incredible learning
experience And one of the big things I
took from that was that I learned that
getting a job is being able to position
yourself in a way that communicates
effectively to another person whether
it's an employer or it's a grant or art
opportunity who we are and the value we
have to offer I would often tell my
clients it's not about waiting around
and seeing if we can get hired for
something It's about positioning
ourselves so that we become the choice
that makes the most sense for them and
what they're looking for And same with
art If you want grants learn to pitch
yourself as a person who most
effectively will use this money to
create something powerful and magical Do
you want
collectors Tell them why your work
matters why it is valuable Do you want
opportunities Apply connect share And if
there are no opportunities available
just remember that you can also create
opportunities And that generosity builds
a momentum And so whenever you're
feeling alienated left out like you're
not successful remember that supporting
others is building momentum and energy
that will flow back around into your own
life and support you as well And this
gets me into shift number four which is
moving from independent struggle into
community abundance So there's this
toxic myth that the starving artist is
all by themselves in their studio
wasting away working day and night on a
painting or a drawing grinding into
obscurity until somebody finally finds
out about them But in reality abundance
flows through community I have learned
that when I share opportunities with
artists when I recommend people for
projects or for grant opportunities I
have seen that energy come back to me
tenfold So whenever you're in doubt be
generous Support your community Uplift
others Know that that creates a certain
flow that will uplift all of us I also
have a wonderful mantra that I'm going
to share a little gift here for you to
see That is your success is my success
My success is your success We ascend
together Meaning that when you succeed I
see that as a part of my success because
we belong in the same ecosphere in the
same community and that I know that if
you are healthy I am healthy too This is
a powerful anti- capitalist way of
looking at the world where we are not in
competition with each other We are a
part of each other's srival and success
And shift number five and this is a
really big one moving from a fear of
asking to having confidence in the value
you bring to this world Stop being
afraid to ask Ask for opportunities Ask
for introductions Ask if someone wants
to buy your art Ask for the payment you
deserve Ask to see if you can receive
more support I used to often shrink back
and believe that I was being too much or
asking for too many favors But the truth
is people want to support you They just
need clarity on how they can do it When
you stand in your value and you
understand what you bring into this
world others will understand it as well
So it is so important to learn how to
communicate your needs as well as what
you have to offer to this world You
might be surprised by the doors that
start to open and the portals that
emerge So those are my five
transformative money mindset shifts for
artists And listen this is not just
theory These are shifts that I'm still
practicing every day as I continue to
build my life as an artist I'm curious
which of these shifts resonated the most
with you Do you have a money mindset
shift that has supported you and your
artistic practice I would love to know
