Show Notes

As broadcast March 1, 2022 with plenty of fighting spirit and independence for your podcast roundabouts.  Prince Paolo joins us once again to go through our indie selections for the week on our Under The Radar showcase.  Busy week of new tunes and albums along with announcements, chief amongst them being Golden Vessel, Moods, and AmeliaRose.  But before any of that, we got into some did you know about "Dark Side of the Moon," Pink Floyd's iconic LP released on this date in 1973.  The longest-running album of all time on the Billboard Hot 100 has many interesting facts behind it, along with some non-facts many assume to be true.  We still are waiting for Prince Paolo to listen to it front-to-back though...and we'll probably be waiting a long time for that.

PART 1 SONGS
Pink Floyd – The Great Gig In The Sky
Matt MacNeil – Everybody Wants To See The Sunshine
Blue Wilson – The Wringer
44 Ardent – pieces
Goth Babe & Blood Cultures – Driving South
Still Corners – Far Rider
PART 1 FACTS
Pink Floyd – The Great Gig In The Sky
- Pink Floyd released what you could say is their greatest album Dark Side Of The Moon. The album debuts at an inauspicious #95 on the US Albums chart, but becomes far and away the album with the most weeks on the tally, thanks in large part to a run from 1977-1988 when it never leaves.
Matt MacNeil – Everybody Wants To See The Sunshine
- This is an older tune meaning from last year, but I certainly slept on this.
- Released on A Quiet Attack. Matt MacNeil lives in Toronto and makes/releases music independently. His first album Pictures of Me as a Baby was released in April 2020.
Blue Wilson – The Wringer
- This is the project of LA-based Michael Stevenson.
- He hasn’t released any albums thus far, but this is his latest single, which seems to be part of a project but nothing I can find so far.
44 Ardent – pieces
- 44 Ardent is anAustralian producerwho makes chilledlo-fi housemusic which can be likened to a mix between Bonobo, Tourist, and Four Tet.
- This one dropped on Feb 24 last Thursday via Mammal Sounds, and big up to Jez Ryan down there.
Goth Babe & Blood Cultures – Driving South
- Our favorite California nomad in a van with a dog is out with this and a new EP this past Friday.
- Seems to have quite a nautical theme, which is the result of these recordings being inspired by a boat trip he took with some friends, and a lot of videos being taken from the EP for videos to the tunes as well. The Santa Catalina EP, do check.
Still Corners – Far Rider
- Still Corners have shared a seven-minute new song, “Far Rider.” The male/female American/British duo of Greg Hughes and Tessa Murray are on tour of the U.S. and Europe this April to June.
- “This song is about leaving, lost love and finding yourself somewhere on the journey, really it’s about redemption. I recently drove 6000 miles across the southwest to feel the sun on my face and think. We used the dreamlike nature of the song to capture the landscape and a hypnotic feel to conjure up the long and lonely travel days.”

PART 2 SONGS
Golden Vessel - eee (feat rei so la & abraham tilbury)
James Leonard Hewiston – Stable
Highline - Enough for You and Me
Lexie Carroll - do you wanna leave this city?
Louie Elser - Video Star
Mehro - Like You're God
PART 2 FACTS
Golden Vessel - eee (feat rei so la & abraham tilbury)
- I’m glad to have Golden Vessel back on the show with a new track. Golden Vessel is an artist from Australia and he and his crew have been putting out great tunes for the past couple of years now.
- The new single is called “eee” and it is our first taste of his forthcoming new album. The album is entitled, “Everything Everyday Everything” and it is scheduled for release sometime in June.
- He says that this song was inspired by a time when he was rethinking his beliefs. He was listening to a lot of podcasts and reading books about spirituality but found that the thing that helped him most was just being out in nature and really deeply appreciating his surroundings.
James Leonard Hewiston – Stable
- This song is so catchy. In the song, he repeatedly sings, “I’m emotionally unavailable, I’m just doing what I can to keep myself stable”. Not the most profound lyrics, but they just really hit me for some reason and I think a lot of us can relate to that sentiment for sure.
- Unsurprisingly, the song was written at the peak of COVID restrictions and I think you can definitely hear all that bottled up nervous energy in the track.
- James Leonard Hewiston is from the UK and a couple months back, he released an EP called Commercial. “Stable” is his follow up single so I think we can expect more from him in the coming months.
Highline - Enough for You and Me
- Highline is an indie rock quartet from Down Under. Their new song, “Enough for You and Me” is all about friendship.
- More specifically, it is about leaning on your friends to make you feel better about the mundane times in life. The band says that it is a celebration of friendship and the good things it can do for you as well as a reflection on the difficult times we all go through sometimes.
Lexie Carroll - do you wanna leave this city?
- Lexie Carroll is a 17-year-old singer-songwriter from London. She says that she was been writing songs since she was 8-years-old so I guess we can call her a veteran in the game already.
- She’s already got a growing following online and it looks like a lot of people are feeling her vibe, and I am definitely one of those people.
- She released her debut EP Birthday Cake in 2020 and since then she’s released a few follow up singles. I think it is just a matter of time before we get another EP or maybe even a full album so we’ll keep you posted on that.
Louie Elser - Video Star
- Louie Elser is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer. She lives part time in Northern California and part time in Paris... must be nice.
- She grew up watching her mother perform as a Latin jazz singer and I think you can definitely hear that influence in her new song “Video Star”. It definitely has that sultry, smoke-filled jazz club vibe to it.
- She says that this song is about the quarantine that everyone had to go through and how her social life was pretty much just a bunch of video calls. It is kind of weird when you think about it, everyone kind of became sort of a video star during these Covid times.
Mehro - Like You're God
- We’ve got a bit of a weird one to close out Part 2 of the show, but as soon as I heard it, I liked it and quickly had to press repeat.
- Mehro is an artist from LA and I totally love his new offering. Musically, it is minimal but it’s got this darkness to it that got me hooked.
- Mehro says that this song just kind of came to him. He says that the song came from a place outside and within him. I guess that’s just one way to say that the song can be whatever you want it to be.
PART 3 SONGS
SUPERFLUSH – Yoga
MIYNT - Of the sun
Langkamer – Teeth
Sea Girls - Lonely
Pierce Alexander - This Far
Chaz Kiss (AmeliaRose) - AV
PART 3 FACTS
SUPERFLUSH - Yoga
- Superflush in an indie trio based in California. More accurately, two of the members are based in California and the other member is actually in Cleveland and they collaborate on their songs online.
- The three initially met back in 2018 in New York City where they gigged in other groups and they formally became a trio in 2019.
- Subject wise, the song is a love song with some cute lyrics, and musically, it’s a nicely crafted indie pop song with some retro flavors. Very nice offering from Superflush.
MIYNT - Of the sun
- MIYNT is an artist and producer from Stockholm and “Of the Sun” is her latest and our first taste of her upcoming album, Lonely Beach. She’s released several EPs already and Lonely Beach will be her first full-length release and it is slated to drop sometime in May.
- About the tune, she says that it was written during the darkest month in Sweden. She had the playful idea of going to an imaginary hotel called “De La Sol” where she imagined singing at the lazy hotel bar in the 70s.
- It’s a strangely specific song concept, but in terms of execution, I think she hit the bullseye perfectly with this one.
Langkamer – Teeth
- Langkamer is a jangly rock quartet form Bristol. Their new track is a nice blend of alt-country and modern-day slacker rock. It kind of reminds me a little of CCR actually.
- The band says that “Teeth” is about envy and disillusionment and how two people can look at the exact same scene and see it completely differently.
- Musically, I think it’s great. It is one of those songs that I liked more each time I listened to it.
Sea Girls – Lonely
- The Sea Girls is a band from London and they have described themselves as the bastard sons of The Killers and The Strokes, and if you check out their songs, it is easy to see why.
- The band has a new album on the way very soon. The album is entitled ‘Homesick’ and it is scheduled to arrive on March 25th via Polydor.
- Band front man Henry Camamile says that the song is about the best friend that he should have gone out with but never did. He says that the moment had passed and then things started to pick up with the band so they never did give the romantic relationship a chance. I guess that’s just the way things go sometimes, we never really know which way life will take us eh Danno?
Pierce Alexander - This Far
- Pierce Alexander is an artist from Charleston, South Carolina. “This Far” is the newest single taken from his recently released album, The Minutehand.
- I had a listen to the full album and it is some really good stuff for some easy listening. Pierce definitely has a talent for songwriting and his voice is just super smooth.
- So, if you are looking for some tunes that are uncomplicated and heartfelt, definitely go and check out The Minutehand, I think you will be pleased with what you hear.
Chaz Kiss (AmeliaRose) - AV
- Chaz Kiss, aka Amelia Rose, is a 19-year-old artist based in New York. It must be said, when I saw her profile pics, it didn’t match what I thought her music would sound like.
- She’s got like a goth look going on at the moment so I was surprised to hear this kind of song, which I would describe as a ballad with some forward-thinking production.
- “AV” is the second single from her forthcoming new EP and she enlisted the help of Rebecca Moore to play the violin on this tune, which I think was a very nice addition indeed.
- The song is all about dealing with mental illness and how it affects those around you. Musically, and vocally, the track is full of expression and emotion, I thought it was a nice one to close out Part 3 of tonight’s playlist.
PART 4 SONGS
System Exclusive - Game Of The Fool
No Frills - Copy Cat
Urban Heat - City Lights
Moods - New Arcades
Heir - As Long As I Can’t See You
Dreaming of Islands - Hotblood
PART 4 FACTS
System Exclusive - Game Of The Fool
- System Exclusive is a duo that is currently based in Pasadena. Their newest track, “Game of the Fool” comes to us via the label that they are signed to, that would be Castle Face Records.
- This track will appear on their debut self-titled album, which will come out this coming Friday.
- Although the track is upbeat, the meaning of the song is quite sad. It is about watching someone you love fall, into the cycle of abuse.
No Frills - Copy Cat
- I must admit that I am a little late on this one, it came out a couple of weeks ago but felt like I have to sneak it into the playlist this week.
- No Frills is a band from Toronto, and they are getting set to release their debut album, Downward Dog, on April 1st via Big Soup.
- Kind of a random comment here but I’m seriously wondering if their band name is taken from the very popular supermarket chain in Canada called “No Frills”. It was a supermarket where you could buy like no-name imitations of more popular food products. You know like Spritz Up, instead of Sprite or 7Up, that kind of thing.
Urban Heat - City Lights
- Urban Heat is a new wave trio that hails from Austin, Texas. The trio is comprised of Jonathan Horstmann, Kevin Naquin, and Paxel Foley and they have been making music together since 2019.
- I would describe this tune as a bit of synthwave and a bit of post-punk, with an analog kind of sound. It sounds fresh but it is definitely inspired by the 80s for sure. Anyway, I think it is a solid offering with good instrumentation and emotive vocals.
Moods - New Arcades
- Keeping with the synthwave vibes, we have Moods, a duo based out of London. The duo is comprised of Dean Canty and Adam Sullivan and this year, the band is celebrating their 10th anniversary so happy anniversary to both of you!
- Their latest offering, “New Arcades” is a taste of some old school retro pop vibes. I’ve had a listen to their other stuff and I can say that the band is definitely faithful to the retro pop genre and they do it really well.
Heir - As Long As I Can’t See You
- Heir is a quintet from Leeds and they describe themselves as five friends with songs that make you want to move.
- Their new track is a great example of that. It has a nice bounce, it’s very catchy and very easy to listen to. It definitely has a pop vibe to it; it just sounds very accessible. I will also say that the production and songwriting in general is very strong. Very good stuff from these friends from Leeds.
Dreaming of Islands - Hotblood
- I usually go for something slow and smooth to close out the show but tonight we are going to change things up just a little bit. This “Hotblood” track is a bit slow but it isn’t very smooth. There is a grit and brooding quality to it that I really enjoy.
- Dreaming of Islands is a Swedish duo and they have a sound that instantly reminded me of bands like Portishead or Massive Attack, which I think is a big compliment for sure.
- The band is getting set to release a new EP this year and if their other songs sound anything like this, I will definitely be on the lookout for it.
