Hachana L'Shabbos

In this week’s Hachana L’Shabbos we linger in Mizmor L’David and reach the line that so many of us recite without understanding: שבטך ומשענתך המה ינחמוני “Shivtecha u’Mishantecha, hema yenachamuni.” How can a shevet (rod/whip) possibly console? Rav Shlomo Katz and the chevre of Shirat David learn that what feels like the blow often becomes the very mish’enet (staff) we lean on later.

We're still in Shalosh Seudos, this Seudah Shlishis. So, we're still, we've been in the, in the, in the heart of, of Mizmor L'Dovid. We've been talking about Mizmor L'Dovid for a while already right now. Talking about Shalosh Seudos for a few months, but Mizmor L'Dovid, השם רעי לא אחסר בנאות דשא ירביצני על מי מנוחות ינהלני.

We're up to שבטך ומשענתך המה ינחמני.

שבטך ומשענתך המה ינחמני. So, there's a lot of words we say all the time when we shuckle and we look very frum but we don't really have any idea what we're saying. Nachon? It's like the daily musar here, right? You know what I'm talking about, right? You know, שבטך ומשענתך המה ינחמני.

You know what shivtecha means? You know what a shevet means? A shevet is a whip.

שבטך ומשענתך המה ינחמני. What's going on over here? Your whip is going to give me a nechama? Mishantecha I understand. That's what I lean on, a mish'an.

To le'hisha'en. Zeh mashu acher.

שבטך ומשענתך המה ינחמני. So, the Rebbe here, the Rebbe Biederman here has an important diyuk, and there's something that happened two weeks ago that I have to share with you as I was preparing yesterday, that had a, it continues to have a strong reshimu on me.

You're right. Hatzlacha with that one today. You're a, they took that a big chumra over there. That's the one thing, like out of all the, that's the one they're mamish mehadrin, mehadrin.

But those things in life that seem that they're like whips, where we get patched, where we get patched from Shamayim. Or from someone else even, but we get patched.

באמת אינו אלא משענתך. that really those things, you look back in your life at all the different moments that you mamish got whipped, but you were you were big enough to look into the eye of what was happening and and say Ribbono shel Olam, Ayeh mekom kevodo within within the zetz.

Those things you realize looking back are really mishantecha. Those are the things that you ended up leaning on in life for future experiences that that that go on. Each person here has this like interesting, weird, deep smirk on your face because each person's thinking about at least at least like 37 times where you could say, oh yeah, yeah, I know exactly what he's talking about over here. Or the big one.

Huh? Or the big one. I don't want to ask too much. Or the, you're saying about Klal, you're talking about personally in life or Klal Yisrael? Of course, we're still missing. We're still nowhere close expect to see the mishantecha that came out of that that was a result of shiftecha of Simchas Torah two years.

This is your own avodah pnimi of your lev that you have to go through.

באמת אינה אלא משענתך.

כלומר נדמה לו לאדם שהקדוש ברוך הוא מייסרו ומביא עליו רעה. That it seems that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is torturing you and bringing bad things upon you.

אך באמת אין זה אלא לטובתו ומשענת נוחה לסמוך עליו, וידיעה זו היא ינחמוני. What is the consolation? What's the nechama knowing that when I get zetz'd, there's a mish'enet that can come out of this. And living with that da'as, remember right before we say, גם כי אלך בגיא צלמוות. Right? People that have had to go through like heavy things with shalom bayis, or they've had to get divorced and and and then they'll get to their zivug sheini.

So I always, you know, I I had a I had a roommate. I had a roommate that we moved in together as as as 20, well, he was actually, he was he was older than me. I was younger. And we said we are taking this place for one year.

We should never ever know such things, ever, chas v'shalom.

כאשר שב מקבורת בנו הרב הקדוש רב יעקב זכותו יגן עלינו ואף סבל ממרורות בפטירת כל בניו על פניו לא עלינו. The Shatzer Rav was a big baal yissurim. He went through tremendous, tremendous, tremendous yissurim that none of us should ever have to go through, chalila, burying children.

But he said like this, we say in Ata Gibor, מלך ממית ומחיה ומצמיח ישועה. You're a king that meimis, you bring people to death, u'mechayeh, and bring them life, u'matzmiach yeshua, and yeshua sprouts forth from it.הקדוש ברוך הוא מלך, שבין כאשר ממית ובין כאשר מחיה, whether God right now brings upon death into the world or whether there's new life coming into the world, the inyan is, he said, he's saying this after burying his son, תמיד הוא מצמיח ישועה. But yeshua, salvation, is always sprouting forth from whatever is going on, even though to our eyes it doesn't look like it at all, שגם כשחשך עליו עולמו בפטירת בנו אהובו, and also when his world, his whole metzius became so darkened and and with with a faith with with like the pushet choshech Mitzrayim, בפטירת בנו אהובו, אין תכלית צרה זו אלא להצמיח ישועה. The only purpose of this tzara is matzmiach yeshua.

And here's the story.Here's the story. I've mentioned her name so many times the last year because it's an aggada mitmasheches. It's like a story that keeps on going on. I told you that the highest experience I've had this year so far, Tav Shin Pey Vav, without a doubt, was the wedding of of Rachel Goldberg and Aminadav Rotenberg.

Remember I told you how that afternoon when we went to Kvar Tzion to welcome back Eitan Moreh, and then from there you went into Kvar Tzion for the wedding of Rachel and Aminadav. Rachel, widow of Rav Avi Goldberg, Hashem yikom damo, eight beautiful kinderlach, and Aminadav Rotenberg, the sweetest yid in the world who was a good friend and worked with Rav Avi Goldberg in Himmelfarb High School in Yerushalayim, who had four kids, I think four, and his wife passed away four or five years ago from cancer, Noa. why do we know? Because I told you guys that when they're asked how many kids you have, they say achad asar kochvaya. Three kids. this tzadik boy that he was crying while he was playing clarinet with me. And then I only I realized he was a talmid of Rav Avi Goldberg and he was playing clarinet this beautiful guy from, his name was Uri Averbuch from Tkoa, if any of you know him. Amazing, amazing. Kitzer, and Odelia Berlin, if you know who she is, her father's Musa Berlin, she was playing keyboard.

It was an interesting mix. It was like really interesting. And this guy Alon Hillel playing bass from Bat Ayin. It's a very interesting, five, six people, and there's no drums, and there's no electric guitar.

There's just like this acoustic mesh of like people that just love and their hearts are wide open.So, when we started playing a few nigunim of dancing, so Odelia came up and she she she had a list of nigunim, it was like maybe eight or nine nigunim, I assume that were asked to be sung during the dancing. But the problem is, I'm bichlal not in the loop at all of what people play at weddings today. I have no idea. I have no idea.

I'm barely, even if I go to, I go to chuppas, I barely stay for after that. So I don't even, I have no idea what, so I was like, okay, this should be interesting. And I'm looking at the names here and I'm like, I don't know half these songs. I just don't know them.

I figured out a way to to whatever. I I I feel like I pulled a Yossi. I figured out a way to to get my way in there and out of there. But the thing is is like this is that there was one song, and I'm like, I only know one tune for this song, and there's no way they're asking me to sing this because last time I even heard this song was like my father leading a shira b'tzibur in Los Angeles in like 1985.

I'm like, you know, there's Rav Shlomo's Mi Chamocha, it's for sure not what they want. No one knows that song. But the the niggun was מי כמוך מי כמוך בעל גבורות ומי דומה לך. Anyone know this one? When was the last time you heard it?
