The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Joachim, father of the mother of God, August 16 in the year of our Lord 2026.
Vox LIturgica:Of today's mass, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. Desiring to associate the name of Joachim with the triumph of his blessed daughter, the church has transferred his feast on March 20 to the day following the assumption. Leo the thirteenth whose baptismal name was Joachim raised his feast and that of Saint Anne to the rank of double of the second class in 1879.
Vox LIturgica:Joachim and Anne says Saint Epiphanius earned divine favor by an irreproachable life and merited that their union should bear for its beautiful fruit. The Blessed Virgin Mary, the temple and mother of God. Joachim, Anne, and Mary offered manifestly in themselves a threefold sacrifice to the Holy Trinity. The name of Joachim signifies preparation of the Lord. Is it not he, in effect, who prepares the temple of the Lord, the Virgin?
Vox LIturgica:Wherefore the introit and gradual enhance the virtues of this great confessor and recall the frequent almsgiving of the saint for according to tradition he divided what he had into three parts of which the first was given to the temple and its ministers, the second to the poor, and the third was all he kept for himself. Most blessed couple says in his turn Saint John of Damascus, the whole of creation is in your debt for it is through you that it has been enabled to offer the Creator a present above all presence, the chaste Mother, who alone was worthy of the Creator. Rejoice, Joachim, for unto us a son is born of thy daughter. And the gospel selected shows us the royal lineage of this son for by his marriage with Mary daughter of Joachim or Heliochim Joseph son of Jacob, made Jesus the legal heir of David. As grace perfects nature without destroying it, it may be affirmed that Joachim, united like Saint Joseph and Saint Anne by a very intimate tie to the Mother of God and her Son is called to exercise his perpetual patronage with regard to the Church, the body of Christ, or with regard to our souls of which Mary is mother.
Vox LIturgica:Let us on this day offer to God the holy sacrifice in honor of the holy patriarch Joachim, father of the Virgin Mary, in order that his prayer added to that of his spouse and of their blessed child may obtain the full remission of our sins and eternal glory. In his commentary Dom Gaspar Lefevre presents a condensed history of this feast. From the best I can tell, this is the timeline. In the year 1510, Julius II assigned the feast to March 20, the day after the solemnity of Saint Joseph. In 1738, Clement XII transferred it to the Sunday within the Octave of the Assumption.
Vox LIturgica:In 1879 Leo XIII raised both feasts of St. Joachim and Anne to the rank of double of the second class from that of double major. In 1913, Pius X Divino Oflatu and the subsequent Apink duos Anos fixed the date of the feast to August 16 so that it would not always displace the Sunday. In 1955 the octave of the assumption was suppressed so it was no longer a feast within the octave of the assumption tied to it thematically and temporally. In 1960, John the twenty third's revised ranking system in the new code of rubrics caused ordinary Sundays to take precedence over class two feasts.
Vox LIturgica:Consequently, when August 16 falls on a Sunday in the 1962 Missal, the Sunday takes precedence and Saint Joachim is only commemorated. In 1969, Paul the sixth's calendar for the Novus Ordo joined the feast of Saint Joachim with that of Saint Anne on July 26. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit, Rich were his alms to the needy.
Vox LIturgica:Still through the years his good name abides in memory. The Lord will lift up his head in triumph. A blessed man is he who fears the Lord bearing all love to his commandments. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
Vox LIturgica:Rich were his alms to the needy. Still through the years his good name abides in memory. The Lord will lift up his head in triumph. The Collect, let us pray. O God, who of all thy saints didst choose the blessed Joachim to be father to the mother of thy son, grant we beseech thee that we who honor his memorial may evermore experience his patronage.
Vox LIturgica:A commemoration of the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost. Almighty and merciful God, of whose gift it comes that Thy faithful do unto Thee true and laudable service, grant we beseech Thee that we may run without stumbling toward the attainment of thy promises through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Brethren, the promises you know of were made to Abraham and his offspring.
Vox LIturgica:It does not say to thy descendants as if it meant a number of people. It says to thy offspring in the singular meaning Christ. And this is my contention. The law coming into being four hundred and thirty years afterwards cannot unmake the disposition which God made so long ago and cancel the promise. If our inheritance depends on observing the law then it is not the inheritance secured to us by promise.
Vox LIturgica:That was promised to Abraham as a free gift. What then is the purpose of the law? It was brought in to make room for transgression while we waited for the coming of that posterity to whom the promise had been made. Its terms were dictated by angels acting through a spokesman. A spokesman represents more than one, and there is only one God.
Vox LIturgica:Is the law an infringement then of God's promises? That is not to be thought of. Doubtless, if a law had been given that was capable of imparting life to us, it would have been for the law to bring us justification. But in fact scripture represents us as all under the bondage of sin. It was faith in Jesus Christ that was to impart the promised blessing to all those who believe in him.
Vox LIturgica:The gradual. He hath distributed. He hath given to the poor. His justice remaineth for ever and ever. His seed shall be mighty upon the earth.
Vox LIturgica:The generation of the righteous shall be blessed. Alleluia. Alleluia. Oh, holy Joachim, spouse of Saint Anne, father of the gracious virgin, help thy clients to save their souls. Alleluia.
Vox LIturgica:The beginning of the gospel according to Matthew. The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nashon, and Nashon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David, the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Azah, and Azah the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jekoniah and his brothers at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
Vox LIturgica:And after the deportation to Babylon, Jekoniah was the father of Shaltiel, and Shaltiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliachim, and Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Akim, and Akim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Mathen, and Mathen the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. The offertory. Thou hast crowned him with glory and honor and hast set him over the works of thy hands, O Lord. The secret. Receive most merciful God, the sacrifice which we offer thy majesty in honor of the holy patriarch, Joachim, father of the Virgin Mary, that through his intercession with that of his spouse and of their most blessed child, we may become worthy to obtain perfect remission of our sins and everlasting glory.
Vox LIturgica:A commemoration of the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost. Look graciously, we beseech thee, O Lord, upon the offerings which we lay upon Thy sacred altars, that they may obtain for us pardon and glory through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. The preface of Our Lady. It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the assumption of blessed Mary ever Virgin, who also conceived thine only begotten son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty.
Vox LIturgica:The dominions worship it and the power stand in all. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Vox LIturgica:Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. He is a faithful and wise steward whom the Lord setteth over his family to give them their measure of wheat in due season. The post communion.
Vox LIturgica:Let us pray. We beseech thee, O Almighty God, that by this sacrament which we have received and by the interceding merits and prayers of blessed Joachim, the father of the mother of thy beloved son, our Lord Jesus Christ, we may deserve to share thy grace in the present and eternal glory in the future. A commemoration of the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost. May the holy reception of this mystery, we beseech thee, O Lord, restore us, and may it defend us under thy protection from all adversity through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
Vox LIturgica:The Last Gospel A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. I tell you, there have been many prophets and kings who have longed to see what you see and never saw it, to hear what you hear and never heard it. It happened once that a lawyer rose up trying to put him to the test. Master, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
Vox LIturgica:Jesus asked him, what is it that is written in the law? What is thy reading of it? And he answered, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with the love of thy whole heart, and thy whole soul, and thy whole strength, and thy whole mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. Thou hast answered right, he told him. Do this, and thou shalt find life.
Vox LIturgica:But he, to prove himself blameless, asked, And who is my neighbor? Jesus gave him his answer. A man who was on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho fell in with robbers who stripped him and beat him and went off leaving him half dead. And a priest who chanced to be going down by the same road saw him there and passed by on the other side. And a Levite who came there saw him and passed by on the other side.
Vox LIturgica:But a certain Samaritan who was on his travels saw him and took pity at the sight. He went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine into them. And so mounted him upon his own beast and brought him to an inn where he took care of him. And the next day he took out two silver pieces which he gave to the innkeeper and said, take care of him and on my way home I will give thee whatever else is owing to thee for thy pains. Which of these thinkest thou proved himself a neighbor to the man who had fallen in with robbers?
Vox LIturgica:And he said, he that showed mercy on him. Then Jesus said, go thy way and do thou likewise. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Joachim, pray for us.
Vox LIturgica:Saint Lawrence, pray for us. Our Lady assumed into heaven, pray for us.
