INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN CAMPUS NEWS,
Big Ten confirms Chris McIntosh has stepped down from his role as the director of Wisconsin Athletics on Monday. He has now been appointed the Deputy Commissioner for Strategy at Big Ten. McIntosh has been UW’s Athletic Director since 2021 after Barry Alvarez retired. He also served as the Deputy Director of Athletics at UW four years before his promotion. McIntosh is a Wisconsin alum and was an offensive lineman from 1996 to 1999. While McIntosh was serving, Wisconsin teams won 13 conferences and four national championships. This included UW’s volleyball team and its first national title and back-to-back women’s hockey titles. Unfortunately, though, the football team did not find a similar amount of success. McIntosh helped oversee the hiring process for the head football coach Luke Fickell. During his time, he was able to help fund the Kellner Family Athletic Center and implement NIL into our athletics program.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
President Trump starts feud online with Pope Leo XIV. President Trump started his truth social tirade by saying that the Pope was too liberal and weak on crime. He said that Leo is not someone to turn to for foreign policy, after the pope heavily criticized the US’ war with Iran. Trump also said that Leo is only pope because Trump is in power and Leo was the only one who could deal with him. Leo responded by saying he is not afraid of President Trump and all he is doing is spreading the word of the gospel. President Trump responded to that by posting an AI generated image of himself in robes touching a man's forehead with light coming out of Trump’s hand as if he was healing him. Many surrounded him in the image, including a soldier, a nurse and a woman praying. President Trump has since taken the image down after getting heavy criticism from conservatives. Trump responded to the image as he was picking up McDonalds delivery, saying that the image was supposed to depict him as a doctor making people feel better.

ALSO IN NATIONAL NEWS,
As an update to our 5 pm newscast, Eric Swalwell resigns from Congress Monday following sexual misconduct allegations. Members of both parties called for him to step down or be removed from Congress. The House Ethics Committee has begun investigating Californian Representative Eric Swalwell for sexual misconduct allegations. The Democratic Californian senator allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct toward an employee, the committee announced Monday. Swalwell ended his bid and campaign to become the Californian governor following these allegations, which he denies. The allegations claim he sexually assaulted a woman twice, even during her time being employed under his leadership. Previously, Swalwell claimed “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made - but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s,” in a social media post. Swalwell acted in seven-terms and was a leading force in California’s gubernatorial race. On social media today, he said “I will fight the serious false allegations made against me. However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
