The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we welcomed Canada-based singer-songwriter Nurdjana to premiere a couple tunes off her EP out Tuesday and talk the influence and love of her dearly departed father on the show. A true playlist of vintage summery soul jams right here, and a bubbly interview to boot, this is not to be slept on!

Show Notes

As broadcast June 10, 2022 with plenty of laughs in memory for our stream experience.  Tonight we welcomed Dutch Canada-based singer-songwriter Nurdana De Rijcke  to the show to talk about her new EP "Coming Home," which drops on Tuesday.  Inspired and written by her dearly departed father Rob, Nurdjana took these songs and put her own imprint on them to both pay tribute and bring closure to the process of loss.  Despite the background of loss, this two hour show is certainly a summery celebration of music, with Nurdjana bringing her favorites to the forefront in a playlist of inspirations to her soulful sound.

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight as the weekend finally gets out of bed, and it’s time for this week’s main event as we got a world premeire event this evening. Danno here welcome to you first and foremost and thank you for getting with the program on a big night, on the mic and holding it down from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? So, Friday is finally, mercifully upon us and I know it’s been a long week for just about anybody working for a living, and we are very excited to showcase an EP that is not yet out on the show. Our guest artist selector this evening is Nurdjana (note sp.), who is a Dutch Canada-based soul singer who is out with a new EP on Tuesday called Coming Home. Very proud to welcome this amazing artist to the gig this evening, and Nurdjana will talk about the meaning behind the EP and rock a playlist of favorites for parts 3 & 4 of the gig tonight. Now, as to what we’re going to start with tonight, we are gonna eschew the history and like Nurdjana’s selections, we’re just gonna keep it funky, summery, and fun tonight free of worries and deep cut factoids and such. Thus, we’ll start with Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse getting Crazy cuz few tunes capture the fun of the warmer months than this cut, and we’ll talk a few of the gnarly details after they do their thing. This is The Drop.
Gnarls Barkley – Crazy
________
The Drop has begun the weekend properly here on our guests and requests Friday night. And not only do we have a great guest lined up tonight, but a bit of a premiere to boot. Nurdjana is a fantastic singer-songwriter out of Alberta that originally hails from The Netherlands who is out with a new EP on Tuesday called Coming Home, and she’ll take over the playlist in hour 2 and give us a taste of the mini record and some of her sentimental funky favorites.
And you just got a bit of Nurdjana’s playlist with a joint that was cut for time to open the vibery this evening, that was Gnarls Barkley with a tune you can still hear everywhere even now, and that was Crazy, released on the St. Elsewhere LP in 2006.
Gnarls Barkley of course is the duo of Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse, with this tune just going absolutely everywhere immediately in the lead-up to the album drop, which happened in late April of 2006. Now, our guest artist tonight Nurdjana is basically vibing not only with favorites in the soul category, but also going very positive and summery, so we decided to do that for the first hour as well and play some joints that got cut for time from hour 2 in the process.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
So now that we’ve got the ball rolling tonight we’ll keep the sunshine coming and up next we have Kobo Town with another hour 2 refugee from Nurdjana’s playlist then we’ll complete the triangle with Jupiter & Okwess along with Cymande. We’ll make sure to touch the main angles after the sounds float and dangle, but for now let’s go up. THIS is The Drop on your Coming Home premiere Friday night.
________________
The Drop returns and we are into the final airbreak for here in our summer soul first quarter which will continue until 10pm tonight. Danno here making waves and setting the stage for our guest artist selector this evening Nurdjana. The artist will join us on the phone in hour 2 in order to premiere a couple of tracks off her upcoming EP titled Coming Home, and rock a playlist of funky positive faves before we hit 10 bells. Coming Home drops Tuesday so do stream and support (note sp.)…
Kobo Town – London Town (…another cut for time joint off Nurdjana’s playlist right here, and for those unfamiliar, the band was formed in 2004 hailing from Toronto. This tune appeared on the group’s 2017 album Where The Galleon Sank if you want more of that extra sweet calypso & Caribbean funk.)
Jupiter & Okwess – Na Kozonga (…a trip to Congo right here, the title track to the album released early last year on Jan 29. Jupiter Bokondji is the main man with his Okwess International band on these productions, and although the band found great popularity in the 1990s after formation in what was then Zaire, a civil war and revolution put paid to what they’d built up, and had to wait until 2013 to release their debut album.)
Cymande – Bra (…an iconic tune, more Caribe vibes right here but based in London. This is from the group’s self-titled iconic debut album from 1972, a tune really given status by director Spike Lee in his famous dolly shots from Do The Right Thing & 25th Hour, amongst others.)
Okay, so we’ll go with a couple more cut for time refugees from Nurdjana’s hour 2 playlist this evening, and up next we have a trip back to the aughts with Finley Quaye’s Sunday Shining going first, and we’ll finish with The Roots and Cody Chestnutt doing their thing on The Seed 2.0. This is The Drop starting right at the blazing sun on your coming home Friday night.
Finley Quaye – Sunday Shining
The Roots – The Seed 2.0

II
The Drop returns as we have cracked the perspiring but ice cold 2nd can in our Nurdjana-inspired 4 pack for this evening’s guest artist selector special. Nurdjana is an artist based in Canada now, but is from the Netherlands originally. The artist is out with a very family-inspired EP called Coming Home on Tuesday, and we’ll get an early look into the mini album starting in part 3 tonight along with an exclusive interview and playlist selection. Now, as to what just went into the summer night air, that was...
Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy – Yu Ya Yumma ( …for those unfamiliar, this is a really lovely Gospel group that hails from Ghana. This was one of catchier albums in a very busy year of music in 2019, and the LP is title Yam Yinne Wa or God, You Love Me So.)
Quadron - Slippin ( …another lovely tune that kind of spilled over from Nurdjana’s 2nd hour playlist. This cut appeared on the LA-based Danish electronic soul duo’s self-titled debut LP, which dropped in 2009 to amazing and very deserved acclaim.)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So to continue with part 2, we’re gonna up the pitch a good bit but still keep it bright and funky. Kendra Morris goes to the casino next, then we have classics from Betty Harris and Lyn Collins to keep it 100. THIS is The Drop on your Nurdjana Coming Home Friday night.
____________
The Drop is back on the mic but for the final time prior to the end of part 2 this evening. Our guest artist selector tonight is the lovely Canada-based Dutch singer-songwriter Nurdjana who joins us momentarily, and we’ll premiere a couple tunes from the Coming Home EP to start parts 3 and 4 tonight, which drops in full on Tuesday. We just got in some more funky femme power in that last block right there, so let’s summarize things...
Kendra Morris – This Life (…this joint was the veteran singer-songwriter’s debut single on Colemine Records and ended up being the 2nd tune on the Nine Lives LP, which dropped February 18 to rich and highly deserved acclaim.)
Betty Harris – There’s A Break In The Road (…one of the voices that is synonymous with New Orleans in the 1960s, this one dropped in 1969 right before the artist retired from the music game in 1970. Interestingly though, Harris made a comeback in 2005 to begin recording and performing again, still active now in her 80s.)
Lyn Collins – Take Me Just As I Am (…one of the famous recordings with James Brown and the JB’s in the early 1970’s that produced classics like this one or the sampler’s delight called Think. Interestingly, this was released as both a b-side and an a-side to a couple of 7” releases in 1973 and 1974, respectively.)
So, before we go to part 3 we’re gonna end as we started in Ghana but go back to the highlife period with a band called Marijata and an absolutely manic, frantic, screaming joint called No Condition Is Permanent. Guest artist selector Nurdjana joins us to keep up the vibe and give us a taste of Coming Home momentarily, but for now, THIS is The Drop going crazy, and it is indeed halftime.
