I.
It is 20 hours past midnight on a snowy, cold & downright dour Wednesday of pure depression, and it time to take a trip whatever Omicron is doing in reality to our travel plans. It is a borderless world of travel here on our Round Trip Wednesday and while we’re not flying anywhere warm this evening it should be a fun couple of hours as we take off at 9pm on flight TD 053 for Belgrade, Serbia. And this evening is painted grey as the sun takes a holiday as December 1, 2021. This is Danno of course getting all my things together before I head off to the former Yugoslav capital this evening with Lizz Kalo in tow, adding the notes and the poorly pronounced Serbian from studio 2 GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? It’s been a while since Lizz Kalo joined us in the studio, so as always we’re excited to have her join us on the flight tonight. As you might remember we headed off to Croatia a few weeks ago, but we’re talking two very different although interrelated audio animals. However, just like Croatia, the people of Serbia are also an amazing and resourceful group and the music is definitely of no less quality than any other former Yugoslav Republic. So, to start things tonight we’ll advise you to always make sure that relationships you gossip about are rock solid, as things change quick, and we’ll talk about the history after we listen & don’t speak too soon. This is The Drop.

Drab Majesty – Too Soon To Tell

The Drop is on the train & on our way up to ICN tonight for our weekly flight, this one heading for Belgrade, Serbia this evening at 9pm sharp on flight TD 053. Pretty special occasion tonight as Lizz Kalo is back in studio for the first show of December, as it’s been a few weeks. Also, the Creative Social is happening this Saturday as well, so do check your local listings for that, as it’s always a great collection of artists & vendors in the house, and we’re helping raise funds for the M Dream Orphanage & spreading some holiday cheer in the process.
Now, to the history for today, that was our TIGHT (or) feature to begin the process tonight. That was Drab Majesty with Too Soon To Tell.
And that is because on this date in 2006 exactly 15 years ago, GQ Magazine named Kid Rock & Pamela Anderson their Newlyweds of the Year. Obviously, there were a lot of problems with this, as those two together were about as combustible as the film they’ve appeared on in their careers.
However, one thing that is rather hilarious about this is that by the time the issue of GQ actually hit the newsstands with that as their cover story spread, Anderson & the Detroit rocker had already divorced. Reading through the interview with them, it’s not too surprising. Just one example where this would be obvious to the reader would be Pamela Anderson’s passion for animal rights, and Kid Rock’s equal enthusiasm for shooting and eating them.
So, some might say it was too soon to tell, but the writing was indeed on the wall. What a mess that would have been had they stayed together. Yeesh.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
So, moving forward we are going to get into our first Serbian joints of the night & we have Darkwood Dub up next to be shadowed by Sarlo Akrobata and Obojeni Program, all of which we’ll let you know a bit about while trying to avoid poor pronunciation as much as possible because it’s all Serbian to us. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Belgrade.
_________

The Drop continues moving up the track and we’re about to get off the bus at the terminal to check in for flight TD053 bound for Belgrade & the Serbian surrounds tonight at 9pm with Lizz Kalo. We just started with some classics from the Yugoslav & later rock eras, so let’s run it all down...
Darkwood Dub – Stvarnost (Reality) (…this tune appeared on the band’s later album called Jedinstvo, although nothing comes up on the translation there. We’ll talk more about this long-running band from Belgrade after Lizz Kalo joins us in hour 2.)
Sarlo Akrobata – O, O, O… (…one of the most influential punk & new wave bands out of Yugoslavian Serbia formed in 1977 right here. And also one of the shortest-lived, as we’ll talk about in hour 2. However, their debut album even almost 40 years later is a huge album.)
Obojeni Program – Ona samo plese (…a band out of Novi Sad in Serbia right here, although this title is in Croatian and means she just dances. Formed in the late 80’s, the band is still active and considered a foundational band in Serbian alternative rock.)
Now let’s finish part 1 tonight with a couple of joints that are still classic but more from the Yugoslav funk era of the 70’s & 80’s. Up first is Jakarta with a cut called the dream is strong, and then we have Oliver Mandic with a tune called all the apple cuttings, and that’s gonna be a wrap for part 1 this evening. THIS is The Drop on your Serbian Round Trip to Rio.
Jakarta – San je jak
Oliver Mandic – Sve Su Seke Jabene
II.
The Drop returns here to for the initial airbreak of our 2nd quarter tonight, maintaining the low key profile for the 2nd stanza to start things on our Round Trip Wednesday night. For those just joining us, we are heading to Serbia this evening, and Lizz Kalo will be back for the first time in three weeks’ time. Also back this weekend Saturday in the afternoon is Lizz Kalo’s Creative Social, so do come check the vibe and we are raising money for the M Dream Orphanage to spread a bit of holiday cheer to the lil tykes in the process. As to those last two cuts to start our 2nd fourth tonight...
Kralj Cacka feat Nina Bajsic – Obrnuti red stvari (…for those of you that speak Serbian, this cat’s moniker translates to King of Cacka, which is a lesser-known town in the Serb realm where he hails from. He often refers to himself as the Serbian Tom Waits, and I can hear that for sure in that tune, which dropped earlier this year.)
Porto Morto – Bijeg (…we’ll talk more about this band in the 2nd hour tonight as we have another joint cued up by them, but all you need to know about this band is this moniker translates to Dead Death. So, suffice to say it gets a bit dark in those parts.)

Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
So after that shameless bit of self-promo let’s get back to the cuts tonight, and we have a pair of longer joints up next by Kanda, Kodza & Nebojsa along with Leb & Sol, all five of which we’ll discuss a bit more after the quintet do their bifurcated bustling biz. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to the Red Star.
_________
The Drop continues to move forward tonight, although we’re through security and here at the gate so really just trying to post up for a beverage prior to getting on the jet. Flight TD053 takes off for Belgrade shortly, and Lizz Kalo is back with us for the first time in several weeks as well, at least physically in the studio. For right now, we had some more Serbian cuts to accompany us, but we need the background on the foreground that just came down. That was...
Kanda, Kodza I Nebojsa – Prekidi Stvarnosti (…this is a tune from 2005 that translates to Interruptions of Reality. The trio’s moniker is also interesting, as it means Probably, Plenty, and Daredevil. The label this tune appeared courtesy of is the oldest in Serbia & goes back over 7 decades, and this was voted by listeners as a top 50 all-time release.)
Leb I Sol – Cuvam Noc Od Budnih (…interesting here as this band was formed waaaaay back in the 1970’s in Macedonia, but again, a non-Croatian tune with a Croat title which means I stay awake at night. Anyway, a band that still proves popular in any of the former Yugoslav republics including Serbia, and there has been a merry-go-round of members over the years with several Serbian musicians sitting in.)

Okay, so final call to board just in like every language of the former Yugoslavia along with Chinese, Korean & English, so we gotta boogie but not before we add a couple more cuts to the milieu of a more modern variety. Up next is a tune called FRKA by nipplepeople, and then we have Artam Lili with a joint called Maca which translates to pussycat without the cat in English. THIS is The Drop now boarding flight TD053 for Belgrade and it is indeed halftime.
Nipplepeople – FRKA
Artam Lili - Maca

Đjorđje Balašević - Ne lomite mi bagrenje
• Dore Balashevich was a Serbian and Yugoslav singer, songwriter, writer, poet and director.
• He began his career as a member of the band Rani Mraz in the late 1970s, releasing two albums before starting a solo career.
• He released this song in 1986 and has a long and rich catalog as a legend that he is.
Repetitor - Suženi snovi
• A solid rock band formed in Belgrade in the middle of the 2000s,
• Repetitor has evolved from spiky upstarts into one of the most consistent and respected Serbian bands on the scene today.
• The trio are in many ways the spiritual successors of the vibrant Yugoslav punk scene, albeit with an undeniable nod to American punk bands like The Stooges.
Jarboli - Samo Ponekad
• Jarboli was formed in 1991 and is active to date.
• They released this song in 1999 as part of their debut album
• They mix angular guitars and busy drums which adds a rare sound.
Ensh - Ćuti
• Milenko Vujosević moved back to Belgrade a few years ago with the intention of creating music, and succeeded in that.
• Singing in both English and Serbian, Ensh does better than most at straddling east and west in that most peculiarly Balkan way.
Natasa Bekvalac x Rasta - IZ DALEKA
