What is The State - A Podcast from The State News + Impact 89FM?

The State is a daily rundown of the headlines that matter to the East Lansing, MI community.

Speaker 1:

Hi, and welcome to the state. I'm your host, Rebecca McHawaii. Today's date is 11/26/2025. The forecast predicts that the high will be 39 and the low being 30. The state brings you the stories that matter.

Speaker 1:

MSU jumps to number 11 in AP poll before Fort Myers tip-off. After taking down number 12 Kentucky in the champions classic and Detroit Mercy last week, MSU climbed six spots to number 11 in this week's Associated Press poll. On Tuesday and Thursday, the Spartans will face East Carolina in number sixteenth, North Carolina in the Fort Myers tip-off, an 18 Thanksgiving week tournament running from November 24 to the twenty seventh. MSU will face ECU on Tuesday, November 25 at 1PM in North Carolina on Thanksgiving Day at 04:30PM, with both games being broadcasted on Fox Sports. Were still not consistent enough for me, head coach Tom Izzo said after taking down Detroit Mercy on Friday night.

Speaker 1:

Now MSU faces a pair of games that will provide an opportunity to prove on a lot of shortcomings for the first three weeks. Men's soccer falls short and faces big roster decisions this offseason. Michigan State men's soccer saw its season come to a close against number one team in the country, Maryland, in a four three defeat. The roller coaster that was this season gave the team and fans incredible highs and some disappointing lows. The Spartans ended their season with a lackluster five eight three record, which unsurprisingly left them out of the big ten tournament.

Speaker 1:

The league shift to a 14 field didn't do them any favors. MSU collected just two wins in conference play, but those ended up being the most significant victories of the season. Smith addresses pressure as MSU hot seat rumors swirl. Eight consecutive losses, no big ten victories, and sanctions that have stripped the past and limited the future. It has been a season full of frustrations.

Speaker 1:

This is the reality for Michigan State's football program. Defeat after defeat, all of which has fueled speculation and raised the question everyone is asking. Will this be Jonathan Smith's final game as MSU's head coach? It's a question that nobody seems to know, not even Smith himself. In this landscape of college football, that's always a solid question, Smith said, when asked how confident he is that he and his staff will return at MSU next year.

Speaker 1:

College coaching nowadays is a week to week thing. I'm still really confident in the people that are in the building right now. Following this statement, Smith said that nothing has been communicated to him from MSU leadership about his future. East Lansing hosts Michigan's largest rail show. On November 9, Lansing Model Railroad Club coordinated the largest train show in the state of Michigan, featuring vendors and collectibles sourced throughout the Midwest.

Speaker 1:

With an attendance over 3,000, the Model Train Expo brought thousands of train fans together. WDBM's Liam Climer talked to event organizers, vendors, and attendees to showcase the scope of the event.
