The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We pay homage to true indigenous legend Buffy Sainte-Marie to start the show, then it's all the fresh cuts you can ingest for the full two hours, with Kat Bass providing the finishing touch on our Popcast Monday!

Show Notes

As broadcast February 21, 2022 with mega power femme bidness to keep your pod castin'.  Tonight we open with mega respect for Buffy Sainte-Marie, as the legendary songwriter and fighter for Native American & First Nations rights turned 81 yesterday.  Covered by legends of the game, she inspired Joni Mitchell to write her first song, wrote hit after hit after hit, but her solo work was banned on the radio.  That's alright though, because she's a legend now not only with fans of the folk genre, but she's like a stepmother to Sesame Street kids worldwide, long live Maria!  After the opening salvo we get into the absolute bumper crop of new albums and singles out over the weekend in both hours, with Kat Bass joining us once again to finish it off with our weekly Popcast feature.

It is 20 hours past midnight and surprise surprise it’s cold & grey outside, but no matter the climatology as we mark another Monday so it’s nothing but warmth on decks of the SS Drop, waved into the ether of eternity as Feb 14, 2022. This is Danno making sure the bass shakes the dust off your beleaguered shoulders from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Hoping each and every last one of you had a great start to the grind today, but being realistic about it we doubt that, so we got all the great new tunes in two for tonight, with highlights here in hour 1 from Yumi Zouma, Tame Impala, Khruangbin and so many more. Naturally the lovely Kat Bass has a lot of new cuts from the poppier side of the spectrum in hour 2 with our weekly popcast Monday foray as well, so a busy docket once again as we hit the airwaves. For right now though since we have a ton of power femmes lined up for our first block, we’ll get into The Circle Game from 1967 for a bit of history right now, and then we’ll let you know the address on Sesame Street after Maria does her thing. THIS is The Drop.
Buffy Sainte-Marie – The Circle Game
The Drop is officially on the air here there and everywhere this fine Monday night, Danno here doing what I do studio 2 GFN HQ emanating via radio and ether every night between 8 & 10pm.
Starting with the history by wishing a very happy birthday to Buffy Sainte-Marie, that was a very old school tune from her 1967 album Fire & Fleet & Candlelight. Born yesterday in 1941 in Saskatchewan, she is an artist that has always been proud of her native heritage and she’s an artist that has a sneakily amazing resume.
After she made her debut in 1964, she had a string of classics that were covered by huge artists of that time like Janis Joplin, Donovan, and The Charlatans. She also went on stage that same year at the Mariposa Folk Festival and inspired a young girl to go home and write her first song. And that girl’s name was Joni Mitchell.
Things continued to go well in the 1970’s and 1980’s for Sainte-Marie, most notably being the co-author of Up Where We Belong from the An Officer and A Gentleman soundtrack, and the Elvis Presley hit Until It’s Time for You To Go.
With all these hits over the years, there was one thing still missing, which was radio play in the US. And, she only found out later that because of her outspoken songs about Native American rights and The Vietnam War, Presidents Johnson & Nixon started praising radio stations that blacklisted her, and almost all of them in the end did.
However, nothing could hold her back as she over the years has become a folk icon with so many credits and such longevity in the business. Interestingly, she might be more famous to you from her TV appearances over many, many years as Maria from Sesame Street.
Happy birthday to Buffy Sainte-Marie, an indigenous legend of the modern age. May there be many, many more to come.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
Okay, so let’s get to some contemporary female heroes for the first block of cuts tonight. Up next we have Hurray for the Riff Raff, Yumi Zouma, and Stars, all of which we’ll discuss further after they dance in the nighttime sky. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop continues as the clock and music tell us to here on this New Muses Monday night. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, thankful to all of you for joining us this evening…you are the best! Kat Bass joins us later on for our Popcast feature 2nd hour, but for now let’s run down the new tunes we just put into the space elevator atop the building here in Sajik Park. That was…
Hurray for the Riff Raff – SAGA (…the veteran indie folk band out of New Orleans led by Alynda Segarra are out with their 8th studio album as of Friday. LIFE ON EARTH, the cover of which features Segarra standing in a bayou swamp has been getting major praise over the weekend, with Pitchfork rating it as their best new music for the weekend, so do check in full, I cannot recommend enough.)
Yumi Zouma – Where The Light Used To Lay (…this is the fourth single off the NZ indie darling band’s forthcoming album Present Tense, which is due out March 18. The band describes this cut as “a song that eventually revealed itself as a bittersweet banger about detangling your life, and the enticing clarity and lightness that comes at the end of the tunnel.”)
Stars – Pretenders (…big news here as the Feb 17 release of this single was accompanied by the announcement of the Quebec band’s first LP in 5 years. “From Capleton Hill” is the title and band member Torquil Campell explained, “I guess what From Capelton Hill means to me is from memory, from the past, from a place that seems permanent but isn’t, and I think that that sense of impermanence is a big part of what’s in the record.” From Capleton Hill drops on May 27.)
Alright, so we still have a couple more miles to log before the buzzer here in part 1, so up next is Beach House with a cut called Hurts to Love, which is off their newly dropped and HIGHLY recommended Once Twice Melody LP, which just dropped Friday so do check that for sure. Metronomy will close off the half hour with their latest called Right On Time also off their freshly minted Small World LP which just came out Friday as well, so you got lotsa homework and we’re only a quarter of the way in, Drop Gangsters. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Beach House – Hurts to Love
Metronomy – Right On Time

II
The Drop returns as we slow it right down to start part 2. Danno here, keeping the audio and tempo juuuuuust so as we begin the 2nd half of the first half of programming, and of course Kat Bass will be in tonight after the bells ring 9 times. As to what we just started quarter 2 with, that was a couple of bigguns...
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Mariella (…the after party to 2020’s brilliant Texas Sun is upon us, as Texas Moon dropped on Friday. Another quality release to check out in full, this one is getting a lot of love since it came out, with this tune in particular being my favorite. Seriously, this just needs to be a thing these two entities do all the time, just merge. C’maaaan...)
Tame Impala – The Boat I Row (…Jeff Parker’s new deluxe version of 2020’s The Slow Rush is out, featuring remixes, and b-sides. The Boat I Row would be in the latter category, and kind of odd in our own opinion as this tune is better than a lot of what was on the original album.)
Pod, socials, etc…
So let’s get back to the music after the shamelessness we just all went through. Up next we have a tune from another stellar album just out Friday by Kendra Morris, then it’s new singles from Miynt and grentperez, all of which we’ll talk about sensibly after we let the magic insensate happen. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
Moving forward inexorably towards the end of the first half tonight here on The Drop’s New Muses Monday first 57. Danno here, making sure all the new tunes are in tow, and Kat Bass joins us in mere moments for our Popcast 2nd hour feature as well. As to what we just let out, we’re getting to it…
Kendra Morris – Dry (…the stellar New York-based singer-songwriter is out with her debut album on Colemine Karma Chief Records as of Friday called Nine Lives. This one already made a mark even before it was out, with Bandamp rating it as their album of the day last Thursday and giving it glowing reviews. Congrats to Kendra Morris…such a talent.)
Miynt – Of the sun (…this artist and we must note the spelling (M I Y N T) is out of Stockholm and had this one premiere last week via FLAUNT Magazine. Already tabbed as one of the Beeb’s future artists to look out for, Miynt after several EP releases over the past couple of years is readying for her solo debut album called Lonely Beach, which drops in May so keep an eye out for that one.)
grentperez – Why I Love You (…this is a joint off the artist’s latest EP which dropped right on Valentine’s Day one week ago and is called Conversations with the Moon. Interesting background here as he was born in Australia and is from a Filipino background, do keep an eye on this young man, he’s doing some good stuff.)
Okay, so that’s just about halftime, but we still got a river or two to cross before halftime. Another bit of big news this weekend was the Chicago trio Dehd have announced a new album release called Blue Skies, and this is the lead single called Bad Love. The album drops in full on May 27, so that’s already shaping up to be a big one even this far out. After that quick hitter with a lot of power we have Cults to close it out with plenty of twang and reverb on a tune called Valentine, which will take us to the warp zone to part 3 tonight. This is The Drop on your New Muses Monday, with The Kat Bass Popcast coming right up.

Fresh Buns

Troye Sivan & Jay Som - Trouble
02.17.2022
This song is recorded for the coming-of-age film, Three Months. It stars the Australian Singer Troye Sivan himself and will be out on the 23rd of this month. I've never heard of him acting for anything… ??

Vince Staples & Mustard - MAGIC
02.14.2022
This is the first single from Staples’ forthcoming album Ramona Park Broke My Heart, which is due out in April via Blacksmith Recordings and Motown Records. The musician said: “It’s symbolic of home and everyone has a home. Even though it’s very personal to me, everyone can relate to it."

Tame Impala - No Choice
02.18.2022
"No Choice is the second track of their newly released album, The Slow Rush B sides & Remixes. In this, Tame Impala takes us on a psychedelic-tinged journey into feelings of hopelessness and it's sounds gooooood

COIN - Cutie

“Cutie” is an upbeat love song that marks COIN’s second track on his newest single, I think I Met You in My Dream. For those who are unaware, the title "Cutie" refers to a common brand name for clementines, a type of orange. He used a lil' play on words by using "tangerine" in the lyrics rather than "cutie". That's cute.

DeVita - Bonnie & Clyde

Part IV

Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak & Silk Sonic - Love's Train
02.14.2022
After the release of their November debut album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, R&B duo Silk Sonic returned on Valentine’s Day, 2022, with their cover of the song appropriately titled “Love’s Train,” a song originally performed by ‘70s R&B/Soul group Con Funk Shun in 1982.

Gist ft. Jerd - Lens
02.19.2022
"Lens" is a new single written by both Korean artists Gist and Jerd! The song is a plea for an explanation about the pain the protagonist is feeling from their partner. They weren't ready for it and now they can only see a blur, as if their contact lens are covered with tears.

RETA & SAN E - No Solution
02.20.2022
Recently been crazy about someone? Well this song is just for you! Korean Artists RETA and San E come together to create a 2track single. "No Solution" reminisces on the past memories of their past lover, saying there's no Solution to their pain but them.

HAN SEUNG YUN - Moon Driver
02.15.2022
After his come back on a now ended singing TV program, HanSeungYun came out with his first mini album , Lovander. The album itself is about the protagonist denying the end of his relationship, portraying the desperation through rock ballads.
