Florida pastor Willy Rice has been elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, winning on the first ballot at the SBC Annual Meeting in Orlando and succeeding Clint Pressley as head of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination. Rice, senior pastor of Calvary Church in Clearwater, received 5,217 votes, or 57.56%, defeating Josh Powell of Taylors First Baptist Church in South Carolina, who drew 3,821 votes, or 42.16%. Rice had centered his campaign on spiritual renewal, saying, “The Church is always reforming,” and calling for “renewal in our time.” In a sermon ahead of the vote, he warned, “It is not enough to affirm right doctrine,” adding that “if we seek the favor of the world more than the approval of Heaven … we are already on a dangerous slide.” Rice declared, “I want a Southern Baptist Convention that is successful, but I want one that is faithful even more.”

A Collin County jury has convicted 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas, high school track meet, a verdict reached in just over three hours after five days of testimony. Anthony now faces up to life in prison. Prosecutors said the killing was an unjustified attack sparked by a dispute over Anthony sitting under Memorial High School’s team tent. First Assistant District Attorney Bill Wirskye called it a “sneak, surprise attack,” arguing Anthony provoked the confrontation. Witnesses testified Anthony warned, “Touch me and see what happens,” and one student said he added, “I’m not leaving, f--- you all.” Defense attorneys argued Anthony acted in “split second of fear, chaos” and in self-defense. Fights broke out outside the courthouse after the guilty verdict.

At the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual meeting in Orlando, Pastor Jonathan Parnell of Cities Church in St. Paul opened Tuesday’s business session with prayer just months after anti-ICE protesters disrupted worship at his church. Parnell prayed, “Father in Heaven, You are the One True God,” adding, “You are the God of our salvation. You are our exceeding joy.” SBC President Clint Pressley praised him beforehand, saying Parnell had shown “courage and bravery” and made “a very public and gracious stand for the Lord Jesus.” The January protest targeted Cities Church because pastor David Easterwood also leads a local ICE field office. More than 30 people were federally charged, including Don Lemon and journalist Georgia Fort. St. Paul City Attorney Irene Kao declined state charges, saying evidence was insufficient, a decision Parnell blasted as excusing agitators who “terrorize their children” and halt worship.

A brutal attempted beheading in north Belfast is fueling a fierce political debate over immigration in the U.K. Police say a 30-year-old Sudanese asylum claimant has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a man in his 40s with a kitchen knife, leaving him with serious injuries to his face, eyes, neck and back. Democratic Unionist Party MP Gavin Robinson called the assault “chilling” and “medieval,” warning it “will have profound implications for community cohesion” and insisting that “uncontrolled immigration needs to end.” Robinson also said the suspect, reportedly living in Britain on a five-year visa, should be “convicted and deported on the first flight out on a one-way ticket.” Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack as “sickening,” “horrific” and “abhorrent,” as bystanders were praised for helping restrain the attacker before police arrived.

Outgoing Southern Baptist Convention President Clint Pressley used his final presidential address in Orlando to deliver a blunt message to SBC messengers: “We need to learn to hate pride.” Pressley, senior pastor of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte, warned that pride can fracture relationships, weaken churches and damage Christian witness. Reflecting on his time in office, he said the presidency had helped humble him, joking, “everybody don’t love you … they dislike the suit you got on.” Drawing from Ephesians 4, he called for “lowliness and meekness,” along with what he described as self-awareness, Christ-awareness and God-awareness, declaring, “God is the Potter and we are the clay.” Pressley also issued a sharp rebuke on self-control: “If you are a man who calls yourself a Christian, but you don’t have self-control over your foul mouth or your bad attitude or your temper, then don’t tell people you’re a Christian. It embarrasses us.”

Bill Maher is speaking out about late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, saying after interviewing him on “Club Random” he came away believing Kirk “wasn’t a monster,” despite sharp political disagreements. Maher told comedian Jeff Dunham he recently agreed to appear briefly in a documentary on Kirk’s life, but warned, “Don’t expect me to be just saying hagiography about Charlie.” Reflecting on their earlier conversation, Maher said, “I liked him as a person; I’m glad I talked to him,” adding critics often “mischaracterized” Kirk’s statements. Kirk was killed five months later during his “American Comeback Tour” at Utah Valley University; authorities say suspect Tyler Robinson targeted him over his political views. Maher summed up his outlook with a pointed line: “Everybody’s a monster till you talk to them.”

British YouTuber Joe Weller says he has become a Christian after what he describes as hitting rock bottom. The 30-year-old creator, who built a massive following through comedy, music and boxing content, told fans on Instagram, “I have been saved by the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is the best thing that has ever happened to me.” Weller said he once dismissed Christianity as “a load of nonsense,” but after chasing “spirituality, diet, travel, work, fame, money,” he found no lasting peace. Speaking emotionally, he said of God, “He never gave up when I was at rock bottom,” adding, “He has genuinely transformed me.” Weller urged struggling viewers to seek Christ, saying, “There is a way out, and it is found in turning to Jesus Christ,” and promised a longer YouTube video explaining his conversion.
