S7 EP6 | Legacy sequels ask a lot, and the studio has made a very difficult demand: build a franchise out of the critically panned and financial failure that is 1997's Event Horizon. And not just one film, but two.
Two screenwriters attempt to recreate, reimagine, or flat out fix, existing film franchises when 'the studio' demands...MORE FILMS! It's an exercise in creative thinking where they will challenge themselves to conceptualize, pitch, and craft a film based on the stipulations of a hypothetical Hollywood overlord. | Sixfive Media
Hello, and welcome to The Studio Demands It, a screenwriting series where we will conceptualize, pitch, or craft a film or show based on one of the demands from one of you listeners acting as a hypothetical Hollywood overlord. Overlord. As professional screenwriters, ourselves and massive cinephiles, we talk movies all the time. That's right, Zinn. We'd like to believe that we could meet any demand thrown at us.
T.C.:We will be your screenwriters for this episode. I am T. C. De Witt.
Jim:I am Jim. Woah. Woah. Hello, Jim.
T.C.:Burzelic. Burzelic. All of that was my middle name. Your your full middle name is
Jim:Woah. Woah. Woah.
T.C.:Woah, Jim. Woah, Jim. Burzelic. Yeah. That's that's you jumped in on that.
T.C.:Are you taking a cue off of what what happened last episode? No. Two episodes of No. So fumbled your middle name that I was like, what am I even doing anymore? Have I have I lost all all motivation to give you a clever middle name to launch in the conversation that you were like, I got it this time.
T.C.:I'm interrupting you.
Jim:No. No no thought was put into it. The The urge just hit me too. To just To jump on that.
T.C.:Because because I didn't botch the intro, you thought you'd botch it for me. Yeah. You're living I'm living my nightmare right now. Do do you have any reoccurring nightmares? Is there like, growing up, did you have any do you have any reoccurring nightmares now?
Jim:I do not have any now. I did have some when I was a kid.
T.C.:Yeah. Any any that you feel like sharing with the group right now?
Jim:I can barely remember them. And they weren't like normal recurring nightmares like, you know, waking up in your or going to school in in your underwear or or things like that. Like, there's nothing like that. They were more apocalyptic. I I had one dream in which I wasn't a character.
Jim:I was I wasn't in the dream. I I was just witnessing it. Mhmm. And it was about a weird a a weird plague was causing people's brains heads, not just brains, heads to swell. Oh.
Jim:And one of these people encounters this family who treat them like nothing's going on and offer him a glass of water. And then the kid that gets the glass of water, all of his skin and and flesh Yeah. Sort of fall off of his body, and he and he hands the person a glass of water. And that's the dream.
T.C.:That's the oh, boy. That's that's very cinematic.
Jim:Mhmm. I have I have dreams. Have cinematic dreams. I've Like yeah.
T.C.:Regularly have movie dreams, like, where I will dream I will wake up and be like, woah. I gotta write that down. That was, I I had a reoccurring dream when I was little, and I carried it into my teenage years. And it would it would just happen every it's very infrequently, but when it happened, it it it was more of an idea of what was happening. But the best way I can describe it is it was a a night the world was perpetually night.
T.C.:I was alone, and a second earth was encasing the one I was on. Mhmm. So, like, the a a new earth was just gonna replace the one that I was left standing on and no one knew. Like, everyone was prepared for to, like, wake up in the morning and they'd be on the second, like, the replacement Earth. And I was the only one who woke up in the night and could see that this new shell was encasing the Earth.
T.C.:And it it was a bit more of dream logic than that, but I would wake up terrified. Like, oh god. I just I I that just left me shook. It left me sweating, scared, shivering kind of a dream. And I had it through my little childhood into my teenage years enough times that I remembered it when I'd wake up from it.
T.C.:I'd be like, that dream again. And I had an instance where I I woke up one night. I was probably 13 or 14. I woke up from it. I walked out into the living room.
T.C.:I sat on the couch. My dad was watching, like, ESPN or something. It was after midnight. He's like, hey. You okay?
T.C.:And I was like, yeah. I just I just had a bad dream. And I this is what occurred. I fell back asleep. I stood up.
T.C.:I walked out the front door. We lived across the street from a football field.
Jim:And you had the dream again?
T.C.:No. I I walked out the front door across the street, climbed the fence, went into the football field, and, like, as I'm doing this, I'm I'm sleepwalking. I sleepwalked out the door across the street. Literally did this, but I was having the dream again, and I I could feel myself trying to wake myself up. And I was like, no.
T.C.:I'm done with this. I'm done with this. And I I fought the dream away, and it was like, no. I'm done having this dream. And I woke up on the 50 yard line of the football field, the the high school football field across the street from my house.
T.C.:Woke up and was like, I I beat the dream. And then I walked back and my dad was on the front porch like, where did you go? I was like I was like, I just went for a walk. And then I went back to bed and I never had the nightmare again. But I know it sounds insane, but I I did that.
T.C.:I walked out the front door.
Jim:Mhmm.
T.C.:Have I ever told you that before? Maybe. Maybe. If I have, I'm sorry to repeat No.
Jim:No. This.
T.C.:It was the
Jim:yeah. And doing the math that that might have been around when the the the movie that for for today came out.
T.C.:Woah. What a good segue. You're like, listen. No one wants to hear anyone tell talk about their dreams. Yeah.
T.C.:Great. Okay. Oh, your teeth fell out. Event Horizon. Okay.
Jim:I was just doing the math,
T.C.:and I realized,
Jim:oh, that's about That
T.C.:would have been about the so so, yes, I I tipped the hand. I mean, anyone could see what the episode is about. We we
Jim:we I don't know why I hide it like that when I when I know.
T.C.:It's so fun. It's the it's normally, we don't we only get to know the subject matter of the of the demand, which is what we're doing today. But let's get into today's demand. So Jim, our listeners yes, it is. Jim Woah.
T.C.:Woah. Woah. Woah, Jim. Woah, Jim. Our listeners from all over the world have given us demands.
T.C.:And you listening right now, you can send us any demand you'd like, and we will have to meet it right here on the spot. And if we we do our job by the end of the episode, we will have pitched a full script and maybe even exceeding the demands you've given us. And when the end of the season comes, this could very well be the demand your demand could very well be the the pitch that the that the listeners greenlight for our finale. Boy, just don't know. Finale.
T.C.:I've but please keep those demands coming. Today's demand comes from one of our dear devoted listeners. This comes from Michael Sullivan at oh, wait. Where is it? At Libera Te Tutemet Tutemet Studios.
T.C.:I believe that's Latin.
Jim:What's that Latin for?
T.C.:I think it means save me or no. I might have just I must
Jim:I think I mistranslated.
T.C.:I might mistranslated. I think it means save yourself from hell.
Jim:No. You didn't say that from hell. You gotta say the expert in furnace.
T.C.:Expert in furnace. Good morning, gentlemen. Good morning. Okay. Good morning, gentlemen.
T.C.:You may be surprised today to encounter a demand regarding the continuation of a story from a financially unsuccessful genre film from nearly thirty years ago. But there are a lot of streaming services out there, and we were able to get these rights at a reasonable price. But the first two acts of Event Horizon constitute one of the best hours of any space based film, Jim would disagree, that has ever been produced. The third act? Well, maybe not so much.
T.C.:A lot of people refer to the third act as hell raiser in space, and they don't mean that kindly.
Jim:Oh, man.
T.C.:This demand is not for one film. Oh, boy. Because we have such immense faith in the writing team. Well, thank you very much. We want two films.
T.C.:We will give you leeway to pitch outside these suggestions, but in higher level meetings, we've been eagerly looking at these options. A prequel, and a prequel can take many shapes. The origin story of the Event Horizon itself. IDW did a limited comic series last year, on the same subject, so some of these ideas might not be available to you. I wasn't aware of that.
T.C.:An origin story of the events of the go wait. Hold on a second. Of the Lewis and Clark, we see them existing we see in the existing film that they already are tight knit group. Clearly, they've had successful missions. Or three, the first command of captain Miller on the Goliath, which led to the tragedy in the flashback.
T.C.:You ever see fire in zero gravity? And the second movie is a sequel. Our surviving crew members, Stack, Cooper, Justin has technically survived, but he's going to be unavailable for future missions. Gathering a new crew to save captain Miller from his presumed fate in hell. There you go.
T.C.:Sincerely, Michael Sullivan. Jim. T.C. Event Horizon. Franchise it.
T.C.:What Michael is asking us here is a prequel and a sequel.
Jim:He wants some bookends.
T.C.:Yes. I I have I haven't I wanna say something right up front. I think we can make one movie that's both. I think we can if if we're gonna do a prequel story, we can do it at the same time as a sequel story. I I know the demand is literally to literally to make two movies, and I'm not I know I'm immediately going like, I don't wanna do that.
T.C.:I think we can do it in one. But the the notion of a a prequel movie Here's why I bump up against this. A prequel movie about the crew that leads to the Event Horizon. Event Horizon's the nightmare. That's hell.
T.C.:They are introduced to that. It's it's like seeing the origin story of the Nostromo crew. Okay. What did they do before they ran into a xenomorph? They were just a bunch of truckers space truckers.
T.C.:Yeah. So I'm not saying we can't do an origin story or some sort of prequel set idea for these crew. One of the ships, Captain Miller on the Goliath, and his and his events with losing his his three teammates or his one teammate and saving the other two. And maybe you think we could do that. A sequel, do think we could do.
T.C.:That that one that one, I'm willing to, like Yeah. Pitch off that, especially with such a clear idea of saving Captain Miller from presumed hell. There there's they've already had the unleashing of hell in Event Horizon. So anything after the fact, we can get nutty with. We can go into real some real cookie, crazy, horrific territory.
T.C.:Okay. I've rambled enough. What do you think about this notion?
Jim:I'm well, if if you have an idea and know how wanna you make one movie out of it, we can what what's the the hunt Huntsman and
T.C.:Snowy and
Jim:the Snowy and the Huntsman. From what I understand, the the sequel was literally a single movie book ending. That reference didn't land right.
T.C.:Anyway You are we can do I'll I'll help you out, Jim. Snow White and the Huntsman Winter's Winter's War, the second one. I think it's just The Huntsman Winter. It the first part takes place before events of
Jim:Of the first movie.
T.C.:The first movie, and then the second half takes place after the events of the first movie. So I that's yes. That's what you're gonna think.
Jim:We can we can do that. I also see possibilities for two movies. Okay. I feel I I I'm having ideas for a prequel. Pre for a situation like this, you are right.
Jim:It's harder to do one because you need to dance around certain info and events happening, and you also risk recontextualizing things.
T.C.:And if we're gonna recontextualize anything, it's Sam Neill's weird worst character and just make him,
Jim:like See, that's the thing. I think that's a bad idea.
T.C.:Okay. Okay. Gotcha.
Jim:I think it's a bad
T.C.:I interrupted you anyway.
Jim:If the whole time doctor Weir is just looking to open the gate Mhmm. I don't know. That that's that that that that really undermines any sort of arc that he has, any sort of insanity. But it could it could be done it could be done well. There there's there's a story Mhmm.
Jim:In Deadlands of of of all things.
T.C.:Have you have you brought Deadlands up before?
Jim:I don't know. I try not I I try not to bring it up, but few people know that there's this thing called Deadlands that I love.
T.C.:And Jim loves it. No. I'm just giving it a hard time hearing.
Jim:But there there there's a a major major story in Deadlands is this mad scientist. Before he was a mad scientist, before the the the world went crazy, got the supernatural injected back into it, he lost his wife. Mhmm. And he wanted to bring her back, so he started researching ways to do that. Mhmm.
Jim:And then magic becomes a thing, and he's he's becomes the foremost foremost in the new science. Mhmm. And what he ends up doing is he ends up making a special bore, essentially, b o r e. Right? A a drilling a drilling bore, not a not a word on it.
T.C.:Yeah.
Jim:With the intent of drilling into hell to get his wife's soul back.
T.C.:Wow. Okay.
Jim:The rest of the company doesn't know this. Mhmm. They don't know that that's what he's up to. And they do eventually drill into hell, and there's whole adventures you have and swathes of mercenaries get killed. Oh, but and and, actually, no.
Jim:I think I might have brought this story up in the lone stranger because we have a a train that goes to hell. Comes hell. Yeah. And he so he had this this drilling board that went to hell, and they laid train track and took a train to hell.
T.C.:So you're suggesting that if we wanted to pursue doctor Weir as this sort of Weir as this kind of mad scientist Yeah. But it does
Jim:really contextualize. It would be him like, it would literally be him trying to find his wife's soul because as we saw in the movie this is gonna be full of spoilers. I don't know why I'm bothering to say that. Our our episodes always are, especially for the things that they're about. His wife committed suicide, which, at least in the Catholic church, is a sin, so her soul would be in hell.
Jim:Mhmm. And we know it we end up knowing it's not just hallucinations. Literally, her hell. Hell is at least taking her embodiment Mhmm. And torturing him, saying, we're gonna you're gonna be with me now.
Jim:Mhmm. You won't be alone anymore.
T.C.:So giving some sort of prequel story that explores that and his motivation for building this thing that it wasn't to traverse time and space that he's clearly
Jim:It was always to go to hell.
T.C.:Yeah. I I see why that would undermine this movie. It would recontextualize in such a way that he's yeah. I I I take your point. You said you might have a notion of how to do a prequel?
T.C.:So we would But we we do have other options. We could follow Goliath the Goliath ship and and Lawrence Fishburne. We could follow the Event Horizon folks themselves. But I interrupted you. Go ahead.
Jim:So my notion for a prequel so those were just examples, and we appreciate the studio giving starter seed seed ideas.
T.C.:Sure. Yeah.
Jim:My idea would actually be to do the building of the Event Horizon. Mhmm. And Weir is kept unknown, but a group of people have injected themselves into the team with the intent of bending this project to making a gate to hell.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay. So then it's not weird who's doing it.
Jim:It is It's a it's a cult of people.
T.C.:Yeah. A cult
Jim:that don't really have a protagonist.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:And we know they're gonna succeed. Mhmm. So that that's all I really have for for a premise on where to start, the the building of this ship and the undermining of a star drive to become a hell drive.
T.C.:Okay. So, yeah, let's let's imagine this takes place in some sort of construction site. Now do we wanna make this we we know in 2015, the first permanent moon base was established in the Event Horizon timeline.
Jim:In 2032, Mars was being mined. Correct.
T.C.:Yeah. So let's we have some places that we could set this in because it okay. Here's what I think. You're making a good point here that if the construction of the Event Horizon is being infiltrated by a cult that is is placing things in such a way as modifying the drive itself to blend science with this dark magic Mhmm. The symbology hidden in the metal.
T.C.:Right?
Jim:Two two two fun fun things to hear. So watching the movie, I did sort of keep quipping. Why did you design it like this weird? Yeah. Why like, it looks so it already looks so dark and creepy.
T.C.:It looks very cinnabite y.
Jim:Like, yeah, what is this what is this this motif you are building into your science ship? Yeah. And and being able to say that was, oh, there's these other people who
T.C.:did that.
Jim:The other notion is the fun story of how this entire idea kind of reflects a thing that happened in actual history. The people who were involved in launch the original launch of of the the rockets, the the the science team out here in Pasadena
T.C.:The okay.
Jim:In the sixties, the guy leading it, and I think he had several people from his team, were in a sex cult.
T.C.:Woah.
Jim:Like like Alastair Crowley type studies sex cult. They were they they were occultists, and they built our rockets that took us to space.
T.C.:Oh my god. That that that oh my god. Yeah. I just did a quick little, like, googles little goog search here. That's that's some good parallel.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay. So the the idea that this is a construction site, our protagonist can be a blue collar riveter. That is just someone who's who's who's I just the blueprints have been changed.
Jim:You gotta be careful. It can't be a janitor. Otherwise, we're just doing dead space.
T.C.:Okay. Got it. This is someone who's literally got they're they're a grease monkey, and they're literally just following the blueprints and Sure. And moving heavy heavy stuff, and starts questioning some of the weirdos on this 300 man team that that that this is a huge construction undertaken, and there's hundreds of people involved in the moving and go going on. Mhmm.
T.C.:That there's some cure suspicion or, like, hey. One of his his coworkers. It's like, hey, riveter man. That new group is really weird, dude. They keep like I know they say they got some they're overseeing this, and they've got clearance, but they keep changing this, that, and the other.
T.C.:And I think I've been looking into it, and then that guy gets killed or dies under mysterious circumstances. Then our protagonist can be like, man, my friend, I I didn't wanna believe him, but maybe something is up. And then that protagonist starts investigating what he shouldn't be investigating and starts uncovering that these people are Okay. Cultists. And now you're right.
T.C.:We do know that they succeed. So then in order to create any sort of of cure like, how's this gonna go is once he figures it out, can the cult convince him to join them? And if this guy has lost someone like a wife or a child that would listen, they know it seems dark, but what if you had the chance to speak to your deceased sister? Wouldn't you take it? Doesn't that seem worth it?
T.C.:And then we have a character now that now that the question is, will this guy help them in the end or die in the end? Or you know what I mean? Like, then now we have it. And now we have an arc to go on.
Jim:I see what you're saying.
T.C.:Yeah. Because knowing the results yeah. We can't change the results of this. So now it's a question of these characters we don't know, how do they get through it? What do think of that?
Jim:I like I like I like that direction. I like I like bunches of that. I think it
T.C.:it falls in thinking yeah.
Jim:I'm I'm having I'm having an idea. Mhmm. So I like I like when titles mean multiple things.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Okay. Right? So Event Horizon is the name of the ship. Do you know do you know what an Event Horizon is?
T.C.:Yeah. It's the space just at the edge of a black hole.
Jim:Yeah. It's when you cross that, it it it's lit the the horizon line of of that when you cross that, you you you can't you can't pull yourself back out of a black hole. Nothing comes back from that point.
T.C.:And as my understanding, courtesy of Neil deGrasse Tyson in physics, once you cross the threshold of a black hole into the event horizon, you will be stuck in the event horizon for eternity. That it stretches you through all time and space forever. Yes. Who are you? Yes.
T.C.:It's probably the simplest way to say it, but just that, like, yeah. So go ahead.
Jim:But the idea of the Event Horizon being this this threshold that once you cross it, you cannot go back. I want I wanna utilize so so we're saying these things. So I'm trying to I'm trying to figure out a way. Is there a way that this could be a story of not just this guy discovering this and then then there's a turning point where they convince him. I'm having deja vu.
Jim:Mhmm. Where they convince him to to to come over to their side. Mhmm. The whole like, maybe he discovers it really early on, and it's them enticing him a little further each time. And each time, it's he's compromising.
Jim:Like, okay. I'll do it for this. I'll hold out for this much longer, but I'm reporting you tomorrow. Mhmm. Or or something like that.
Jim:And then and then a little more each time, gets enticed a little more each time until that Event Horizons where once he crosses it He's so is no going back.
T.C.:He's so compromised that, yeah, there is no going back. But okay. I like that that he it's first, he's like, it's none of my business. I'm just doing my job. Then it's
Jim:Quite lit so to to go with that, now I'm seeing a beginning. We are introduced to this character right away. He's with a crew of, like, five to 10 other people that are being brought in. They are government contractors. They're being brought in.
Jim:As they're being brought in, they see bodies, body bags, coffins, something. They very much know you're being brought in to replace people on a that's already in operation. Some accidents have occurred. They were not careful. And so you're being brought in.
Jim:Yes. And as that's happening, they we we and they see the bodies being taken out.
T.C.:Right from the get. Yeah. As our main character's walking in, we see the body bags going out. Yes. Yeah.
T.C.:Give giving this guy a past where he has no choice. There's been some sci fi recently that's done that, like, Alien Romulus.
Jim:Mhmm.
T.C.:They are working off time essentially, like, that's why they're working on the
Jim:Yeah. Indentured servitude stuff.
T.C.:So we could we could play with something like that, or just a simple fact matter of fact, it's like, it's just a job. I just I'm here to work. I don't care. I don't care. I don't well, just tell me what to do.
Jim:I think maybe that's how it starts. I I think we we do need to give him some some stuff some some stuff to put hooks into. Mhmm. But I think that's his attitude going in. Because also, government well, right, because he's a low level government contractor.
Jim:So this is a you can't ever talk about this.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:You're just you're being brought in to do grunt work. Mhmm. So you're gonna you're gonna read a plan, and you're gonna execute it.
T.C.:Work on this section over here. Yeah. Yeah. And
Jim:Oh, crap. I real I realized hi. I don't remember it well enough. Mhmm. Studio, you are very familiar with the Cube series.
Jim:Was this what Cube Zero was? Wasn't there one where it was about the building of the terrible device? That's basically that's that's sort of what we're doing is we're following a character who is unwittingly a part of of building the terrible device.
T.C.:The the cube like, oh, the the oh, cube. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Sorry.
T.C.:I'm I'm understanding now. Not not the the series of films, cube.
Jim:Yeah.
T.C.:Gotcha. And cube zero was the the
Jim:The prequel.
T.C.:The the it's the it's the behind the scenes creation of that of that deadly maze.
Jim:I thought it was. Yeah. I just I don't recall.
T.C.:It's a it's an entry level technician who defies orders to rescue a political prisoner that's trapped inside. That's that's cube zero.
Jim:Yeah. We're not we're not gonna do we're not gonna do that plot. Right. But it just reminded me of
T.C.:It's homage, baby. So he comes in. He's a good he's just doing his job. Do you like the idea that he lost someone? It's it allows us
Jim:to Yeah. That's that's easy enough to do. Yeah.
T.C.:I think not a wife. I think maybe maybe he lost A his brother? Or or maybe a couple family members that like, maybe that even that's why he's unflat unflapped by seeing bodies coming out of this, like, deeply dangerous construction situation is because he's he has lost family members in this job. We know that that building stuff in space is a deadly, deadly job. Well,
Jim:the reason so where where I was gonna go with brother was he lost a brother, and we want them to be in hell. So his brother was a criminal. Not that all criminals are sinners.
T.C.:Sure.
Jim:But this guy was. Mhmm. But he was still his brother. Okay. And it gives him motivation to want to save him from eternal torment.
T.C.:Okay. Yeah. Once once he understands what this drive could be Yeah. What do
Jim:you what do you think of that?
T.C.:Yeah. So his brother died under some sort of criminal
Jim:Actually, I'm I'm yeah. So he also was a space riveter. Mhmm. But he also got up to bad stuff, did bad things Yeah. And ultimately ultimately died died to doing do it.
Jim:It. Died for for it. It.
T.C.:Let just just because I like the cowboy nature of it and the idea of riveters being these roughneck, like, riggers type, like, are hot in the middle nowhere, so they're gonna get caught up into some shenanigans. If he was if it was like a a gambling night, a poker night that went sideways, sort of like Wild Bill Hickok was killed by another gambler sort of thing, where if it's he he cheated at a table, got in a brawl that led to two people, like, him killing someone and someone killing him. Just trying to make it a a a violent criminal criminal death that gives him just a a little bit of just a tiniest bit of, like Deniability? Yeah.
Jim:He he did I love my serial killer brother.
T.C.:Yeah. Like, wants to a serial killer. I don't want to be a serial killer. So I'm saying, like, give giving him something that's like, yeah, he he was messed up and and did bad things all his life, and he paid the price for it, but he didn't he doesn't deserve to be in hell. Sure.
Jim:And and and to that end, so so with all of that, actually, like the idea of of smattering in a bunch of flashbacks. Mhmm. Or or what do you think about having it be sort of like how Weir is haunted by his wife? Yes. Exactly.
Jim:Like, one He's haunted by his brother.
T.C.:And and you pointed out in in in Event Horizon, I don't know if you just said this on mic or before we started recording, that Weir is haunted before he even starts the mission. He's already been reached out. So the the day we meet our protagonist and, like, he goes to the bunk for the first night, he already has the first flash.
Jim:So I I wanna bring up a thing that it it's a sticking point for the for me. I'm a big old nerd. Mhmm. Having him be this roughneck construction worker doesn't sit right thinking about how government because this because the build the Event Horizon was a government project. Mhmm.
Jim:Now it's kinda weird how the Lewis and Clark gets involved because Lewis and Clark isn't. They are contractors
T.C.:They're searching
Jim:just meant to tug him Right. Out to out to Neptune and and look around.
T.C.:They're a search and rescue vehicle. Yeah. But they are working for the government.
Jim:But it's a con wasn't it contractual? They were not a government.
T.C.:They they had the IASA logos on their jackets.
Jim:Weir had IASA. Miller had USAC. Oh, okay. So may maybe it was. Basically, like, it was soldiers who built Los Alamos Sure.
Jim:In in Oppenheimer. Right? So what I'm suggesting what I'm what I'm insinuating is it wouldn't be just contract workers who would be building these top secret experimental things. It would be somebody low level, but who's been given clearance. So that's that's my
T.C.:Okay. So our protagonist is military of sorts?
Jim:I guess. I guess that's what I'm
T.C.:Well, hey. You know what? I I knew I had a friend in college. His he was in the army, and his job his sole job in Afghanistan during the war was building latrines. That's what he was there to do.
T.C.:He built the showers, and he built the toilets. And he was he was in the army, and that was his job.
Jim:Okay. Yeah. No. Yes. Cool.
Jim:This is working out for me. So all of this happened to his brother before he was old enough to join our like, right? Like, when he was 16, his older brother who was 19 Mhmm. This all happened too.
T.C.:Yeah. Just a few
Jim:years went into the military. So that's that's always a part of it, and my brain is happy now.
T.C.:Great. So our protagonist gets brought into building this vessel. Mhmm. Maybe doesn't even have a name yet or they know that they're gonna a a b plot of this is the official launch day. Like, the like, there there's a b plot of them building up to the the celebration of of, like, the breaking the bottle in the bow kind of thing.
T.C.:Yeah. Just just to get I don't know what to do with that right now, but I just wanna put that that there is a a b plot in here. Because because Event Horizon as it is doesn't have a b plot. It's just a it's a pretty straightforward movie.
Jim:Off the top of my head, it is project project Santa Maria. Okay. Named after one of Columbus's ships.
T.C.:Oh, sure.
Jim:Yeah. Because Event Horizon, point of no return. Lewis and Clark, explorers going going Okay. Great. To the edge of the known world.
Jim:Yeah. Santa Maria, explore the whole the whole point is to go explore and find whole new vistas.
T.C.:How about I I don't I'm just gonna pitch it an alternate project Magellan.
Jim:Sure.
T.C.:Because then we have world travel, like yeah. Great. Cool. I've and and it has, like, a fun it's a a Yeah. Space.
Jim:It's a Magellan's been used in space stuff.
T.C.:Yeah. It feels spacey. Yeah. Yeah. Project Magellan is this building of the ship that he's brought into, and he has coworkers that are of his level that maybe even has previous work experience with.
T.C.:Yeah. Because I'd suggest Yeah.
Jim:It it's it he's been brought he's been yes.
T.C.:So one of his buddies is suspicious of the weirdo. That group doesn't talk to anyone kind of thing. Like, how do we fold our cultists into there?
Jim:Well, I don't think I think the cultists wouldn't be at their level. They would be the foreman or higher. Okay. And higher.
T.C.:Which is just just suspicious enough
Jim:Absolutely that suspicious. Like, why this is a weird pattern. This doesn't this isn't this isn't gonna be secure. Do your job. Yeah.
Jim:And it's it's that kind of thing.
T.C.:Do your job. Yeah. And then we have a our friend character dies. Okay. We know he's curious.
T.C.:We know he was suspicious. He was asking too many questions. We, as the audience, know he's asking the right questions. But our protagonist is like, just do the job, man.
Jim:Mhmm.
T.C.:Let's do the job. Just do job. We've we've been doing did I say how I said it? Just do job.
Jim:I I'm sure you you were you were doing a normal casual slur
T.C.:of just do the job. I Say if you play
Jim:it back Just do job.
T.C.:If you play it back and listen carefully, I said Tim Cook of Apple. Okay. I said the full thing.
Jim:Tim Cook.
T.C.:Our our friend character dies. Is is dead and and our protagonist is like, what were you up to? Okay. I'm I don't I'm gonna
Jim:That and this is our beginning of our second act?
T.C.:It's the first step towards the point in overturn for him. The first time he's he's already on the job, but as soon as he starts asking the same questions and slowly start investigating yeah. We're after we're after the inciting incident. The death of our our friend character is the inciting incident. And so now we're moving into the the I'm ask I shouldn't be asking questions, but I am wondering who these people are.
T.C.:I'm doing my job, but I'm also keeping an eye on these weirdos. Mhmm. And slowly, he starts moving towards I know you had suggested that he's presented to it early. I think we that presented the notion of who these people really are earlier rather than later. I don't think it's the climax of the movie.
T.C.:I think it's more like the halfway point where he is he is made fully aware of go ahead.
Jim:I'm I'm gonna suggest otherwise. Mhmm. So so his friend dies. Mhmm. No one new is brought in yet.
Jim:Mhmm. And he's he's brought over to fill in what he was doing. And I don't know if you would want him to be proactive enough that he's already curious, and he's he goes through his friends things before they get removed. And, like, he finds a journal with, like Scribbling. Yeah.
Jim:Like, this dude's being weird. Or or he's just yeah.
T.C.:Yeah. Someone's, like, security clearance card that's, like, circled or or a blueprint area that's been x'd out in a big red circle. Sure. Just some some
Jim:element there. Basically, if if he's involved, if he's decided to investigate or not. Mhmm. But I'm thinking he gets moved over there. The foreman tells him, like, do these things, and he says something like, isn't isn't this weird?
Jim:And he, like, gets gets that look, and he's like, just just do the work. And he's like, okay. I'll just I'll do the work. Yeah. And and maybe after he finishes, he asks another question or two that are a little more astute, a little maybe it's informed by the stuff he found.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Like, I found this over on the McGuffin. Mhmm. And the foreman goes, MacGuffin?
T.C.:MacGuffin used
Jim:to with me, and he takes him because because I do I do want earlier rather than later. And he's brought up to the next level of people, and he's like, this guy's asking about MacGuffin. Mhmm. Oh, well, here's what it is. And the that guy, next guy up, makes it sound like he's just explaining the truth.
Jim:Yeah. These are the plans going back centuries. People have been superstitious.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay. I'm I'm
Jim:with you. I'm with We're just we're building some people have have built in classic ship superstitions here.
T.C.:Yeah. Yeah.
Jim:Yeah. That's all we're doing. So all you gotta do is fill these in. Now you're in on the secret. Don't worry about it.
T.C.:Okay. Okay. Okay. I guess. Yeah.
T.C.:That's I'm skeptical, but okay. Yeah. I like this. That's good. That's good.
Jim:And so now right. So so he's been brought into that for that first that that that that first circle, like like, he knows that there's a a some people believe there's a deeper truth here.
T.C.:Yeah. It's the whole Your turn. Oh, yeah. My turn. No.
T.C.:No. Okay. And I got okay. No. No.
T.C.:No. I I it's the no. I like this. They that they're like, that's great. That's the right beats.
T.C.:We're in the we're in the right space here. And he he gets back to it. But his his curiosity is now peaked even more so as as there if there's an element of superstition here and an element of almost religion here, we could establish a character earlier that has a religious notion about all this that, you know, prays for As they're walking in to see the bodies going by, that character says a quick prayer for the deceased. And and our protagonist is like, hey, man. You know the job.
T.C.:Yeah. But doesn't I I I still God rest their souls. Okay. Now that our protagonist has this new information, he can go to our faithful character and ask him questions of, like, what do you think about superstitions about all this? I mean, we're literally they wanna fold space time to doesn't it sort of contradict the beliefs of, well, no.
T.C.:Honestly, says says our our faithful character, that that rationale of that any that science could be a sign of faith and religion.
Jim:Oh, okay. Well, sorry. You you brought up a note. The secret isn't that the secret he's just been brought in on isn't that they're folding space. That's what the project is about.
Jim:Maybe that could be an earlier secret. What it's actually meant to do. Fold space. We're gonna we're gonna do jumps.
T.C.:We're creating an FTL drive
Jim:faster than light drive. Like, oh, cool. Science. We're we're about that. Yeah.
Jim:Then he finds out, like, oh, this superstition. Mhmm. Yes. And maybe just to kinda get to that a little faster so that he has a little more info when he goes to talk to his the the religious guy.
T.C.:Yep.
Jim:Maybe they say it's something like, these are Masonic rituals Mhmm. And and symbols, and that they they just they're they're they're Just in case. Think of them as pagan blessings Yeah. For safe voyages.
T.C.:Just in case. You know, like, it's just that, you know, sailors have always been superstitious. Yeah.
Jim:Yeah. And then when he goes and he talks to the religious guy Yeah. He says this stuff. He's so you ever hear of the Masonic thing of of doing this? And he's like, that's not Masonic.
Jim:That's like That's satanic. Yeah. Oh. He's like, no. No.
Jim:No. It's it's Masonic. It's just you're just saying that because you Where did you hear that?
T.C.:You're you're just saying that because against the religion you believe in.
Jim:No. I am a Mason in New York as the rins got them
T.C.:reading up right. Get out of here. But now he has a new curiosity. So he he got a little bit of information and a little bit now he now it's like, well, now I gotta go to that next circle. If there's three circles of this, basically, to to call to the three circles of the drive itself Oh.
T.C.:Vision.
Jim:Oh, I like that.
T.C.:Yeah. He's got it. Okay. It's like, I gotta go to next level up here, and I have more questions.
Jim:What if the next this might this might go too fast and too hard. So what if he takes his friend? They're gonna go snooping. Mhmm. Because he's he's gonna show him, like, well, this is what I did.
T.C.:He's like,
Jim:that's definitely the the symbol of Baphometr.
T.C.:This is like This is Gregorian and Sumerian.
Jim:This is Neither of which are saved. Doesn't matter. It doesn't matter.
T.C.:This is druidic.
Jim:That's also not satanic. And they're like, oh, so now we gotta go further, and they they go a bit further. And they they get caught. Mhmm. And maybe, like it's not fully put in like, something happens where they kinda get caught and the religious guy gets winged Mhmm.
Jim:Or or maybe just straight up gets killed
T.C.:Okay.
Jim:Right there. And so now Yes. The foreman or the higher up people show up, and they're like, oh, Gary. That's his that's his name now.
T.C.:Gary. The protagonist
Jim:Gary. It doesn't have
T.C.:to be Gary. Garrison.
Jim:Mister mister Event Horizons.
T.C.:Protagonist doesn't have a name yet.
Jim:No. There you go. Oh, you what'd you get yourself caught up in here? Mhmm. Now you you know this and and and you someone else?
Jim:What's going you guy this was your own doing. This this this what was security supposed to do? Mhmm. This is all top secret stuff. So his hands technically aren't bloody yet.
Jim:Mhmm. But now he's being given the offer of either you get arrested, you can go say whatever you want, you keep your mouth shut, and you stay right where you are. You don't get in any further trouble. Unfortunately, you will have to lie about what happened to your friend, but then that's it. Just go back to doing
T.C.:your job. That's what you wanna do here. Right? And in in the midst of this, we've also continued to see these flashes of his brother that keeps startling him and take and, like, drawing him into a moment and snapping him out of it. Yeah.
T.C.:We're getting these visions of his brother dying, dead, blood in his eyes kind of thing.
Jim:Talking to him. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe maybe not at this point. But yeah.
T.C.:But yeah. I think even just whispers of, like, like, man, I'm tired. I'm not getting enough. I can never sleep on the job. Like but yeah.
Jim:Now And at this point, they maybe to to show to show that you really mean what you want, you have to come to a ritual. Mhmm. And they're, like, literally, they bless each room or something, like, in secret. And so now he is being invited into the next that next circle
T.C.:Yeah.
Jim:Where he now has to partake in in a ritual where I don't know. Should should it be a goat? Do they have a goat? Are they sacrificing a goat?
T.C.:Blood sacrifice. Yeah. Oh, god. I mean, if we wanna enhance the horror of this, in in this action sequence that leads to his faithful friend getting a different idea. His faithful friend getting killed, and they grab him, and his friend is there dying and and eventually dead.
T.C.:They're And like, what you did? Look what you did. See? You know, you did a bad thing. And now here's your options.
T.C.:You can now keep your mouth shut or you're going up the you're gonna and and okay. If I well, fine. I'll I'll keep my mouth shut. Okay. Alright.
T.C.:Well, we have to finish our work, and they're gonna grab the faithful guy, and there's their blood sacrifice. They literally use the body of the guy who just died.
Jim:Is is that not ramping too much to then have our main character have to witness that as well?
T.C.:I I think we're I think we haven't witnessed it. I think we're we're at the point of because if if we're we're we're past the halfway point here, this is this is a big moment because the to to jump a little bit ahead, I think the climax of this is
Jim:Oh, well then then that's is is that oh, then no. That that's the thing. It's not you can go your own way and say whatever you want. No one will leave you. It's like, you've seen too much now, so you either keep your mouth shut, you you do this, you help us with or you you're gonna go out in a body bag.
Jim:You're gonna have an
T.C.:accident. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Correct.
T.C.:That's that's his options here. Okay. And then and once they've done this, and then they send him out, now go finish your job. The launch date for this is ticking. We have less than twenty four hours until the last of this needs to be done.
T.C.:Go back to work. And he's he's in a daze. He's been getting flashes of his brother. He's now had two friends die. He just watched a weird pagan blood sacrifice.
Jim:Mhmm.
T.C.:And he's just sort of going through the the motions as the clock is ticking. Because to to jump a little bit ahead to the climax of this, it's it's communicating directly with his brother and getting a glimpse or at least a a getting near the opportunity to cross threshold into hell.
Jim:So now that he has actually, he's he because he's crossed that threat second Threckens Threckens
T.C.:Threckens Threckens Threckens Threckens Threckens Threckens Threckens Event Horizons. Threcken Threckens. Our main character's name is Threcken. Threcken? No.
T.C.:No. No. No. No. It's a space name.
T.C.:It's a space name.
Jim:Basically, I'm I'm having an idea for for the end, sort of what to what it should sort of crescendo into. Okay. And may maybe this is too cheesy. No. No.
T.C.:Well, I'll be the judge of that.
Jim:Okay. Thank you. So so why during this, it's not just hurry up and do that job. He's now being brought in to many I don't know if we wanna do a montage, but, like, he's being brought into many more secrets. He's starting to be told a lot more of what's happening.
Jim:Like, this we we plan on saving so many souls, and we plan on doing all of all of this stuff with with souls. That that was a terrible description. But
T.C.:They're they're claiming their altruism here. Sure. Like, they're not
Jim:a yeah.
T.C.:They're not a stigmatic cult.
Jim:They're Dropping to him. Do actually, maybe he's now he's not in such a fugue state that he's even said something so they don't have to be like, is there anyone you wanna save? It would just be like, you could save your brother. Mhmm. What what what about my brother?
Jim:Your file. Your file says you lost a brother. Mhmm. This it's terrible terrible tragedy, but he wasn't a very good guy. He had he had a sheet as long as it as his own arm.
T.C.:And if and if any of any of any of these beliefs are true, if if this is to be believed, you know he's in hell for what he's done. He is he is he pay he barely paid his price in the living world. You know he's paying the price in the afterworld. Something like that. Yeah.
T.C.:Just really taunt maybe even, like, politely taunting him with it so that he's getting, like, no. My brother was a good person. He just made mistakes. He deserved better.
Jim:We and we all we all did.
T.C.:We all do. And that's what this is about. Yeah. We're just trying to reach that other side. Yeah.
T.C.:Especially if they keep selling it so, like, as a good thing. That there's never there's never someone screaming and raging until the end, of course. Like, someone's gonna I be
Jim:I don't actually even I should I just jump to what I think Yeah. Yeah. The end should be? Okay. So that the final ritual they they bring and and, like, it's a it like, they're full on killing people right there.
Jim:No more no more feigning accidents and stuff. And he's expected to kinda do the same. Or what maybe. May maybe we do something like that. Ultimately, what I what I want what I would like is it gets to the point where the head council, right, the the the the the the major people in this cult need him to rivet them into the ship.
Jim:Oh god. They're literally in the hole Yeah. In the the the walls, in the hull of the ship.
T.C.:Oh, man.
Jim:And he knowing all of this, they're going to save he's going to save his brother. He will see his brother again. He will be with his brother. He rivets I don't know how he'll do it to himself, but he puts himself in the ship. Oh.
Jim:And that's sort of the the end. Movie ends with that. No. No. Yeah.
Jim:No. Doesn't Some but something like that. It
T.C.:it sort of allows in Event Horizon, there's a moment where something is activated, and all that blood just fills the space. Yeah. Is this the blood?
Jim:I I don't want it. Like, yes. You could interpret it as that. Mhmm. That was meant to be that was psychic blood.
Jim:That would that would that was like the shining Okay. Elevator full of blood. That's what that was. And I don't wanna undermine that, but I don't mind that correlation being drawn. I I like where I
T.C.:like this it's a good pitch. Let me let's let's I want an alternate I'll some alternate idea here is that it's they want to they
Jim:Now Mhmm. What we are recontextualizing is something that Event Horizon says. We're we're we're denying that. Okay. That says it was a ship.
Jim:Mhmm. And when it goes through the gate, it's made something else. It's brought to life. Mhmm. We're suggesting something happened to it before then.
Jim:Technically, it is still just a ship. It's a creepy ship with rituals that have been done, and bodies have been bolted into the hull.
T.C.:Using the weir drive, the the the the drive that he created, what that is, courtesy of his science and the the ritualistic things they've done to this, when this thing is activated, it opens a gateway to what is believed to be hell. Mhmm. The the the if it was just the science, it would do exactly as it's supposed to be. It would full time in space and go from a to b. But but because this group has done all this extra stuff to it Mhmm.
T.C.:This this satanic, whatever have you, ritualistic stuff, that that it is a gateway to hell. And I I want this finale to have a moment where it does open up so that he does have Oh, he steps through? Steps through or something comes through. Like, his brother comes through or a thing comes through so that if if he decides in the end, I I do wanna see my brother, but I can't let this happen. If this is everything I've seen, if he gets a glimpse of that gateway just flickering open enough that he literally sees what's what's gonna come through or go through, like, what it connects to.
T.C.:And he oops. Sorry. Bumped my mic here. If he makes the decisions like, no. I can't do this.
T.C.:I can't I have to stop it. And we have a I'm gonna use my rivet gun to blow your asses away so that this is this can't happen. And getting to that final moment of, like, no. We need this to exist. And and and the the cultists are getting killed, he gets to the he gets to the drive just as it flickers open, and he's about to blow it up in his and and what seems to be his brother steps out, reaches out, and takes him and pulls him in to hell, and the gateway closes.
T.C.:Then the cultists have won and our protagonist morally tried to do the right thing. That was a lot of speedy information.
Jim:But I I I
T.C.:The the notion of him riveting them into place, riveting himself in place doesn't feel exciting and climactic enough to me. It feels more climactic and exciting to me that he he, in the last minute, tries to do the right thing and fails. That he he still is seduced by the notion of seeing his brother. How can I how can I have that while not letting these people have their thing? Because I'm morally I'm a morally just person.
T.C.:I could use this the right way. They're using it the wrong way, and I just want a glimpse to make sure my brother's okay. And so if he believes for just a moment that he's succeeded in stopping them and defeating and defeating them so this gate won't touch hell, but he can't help himself that he has to see if it really does reach to the other side so that when it
Jim:I get what you're saying. That would mean the gate activates long before the crew of the Event Horizon turned it on.
T.C.:Yeah. If if only for a moment.
Jim:I don't know how
T.C.:I feel about that. And and it I'm I'm I I see what you mean, and I'm I'm gonna try to sell it a little more here. Think of it as as the single beam of the Death Star blowing up Scarif as opposed to the full beam blowing up Alderaan. Just a a if there's only an instant of a flicker of a moment where it it it keep going so far as this, that to him, when he perceives that final moment of killing the cultist and turning and looking and going, I just need to know if this works. And it goes, and everything goes silent.
T.C.:And his brother steps out, and he has a moment, and then the brother ends up being, I'm hellish and evil. Blah blah blah. And then he explodes or gets yanked into the device or whatever. And then we come out of it. Everything is quiet and and we're using DH technologies.
T.C.:Like, oh, it's interesting. I I I it's it's not a worrisome thing, but for one point zero zero milliseconds, the drive activated. But to from our perception and our main and our protagonist perception, it seemed like two minutes, and it was just a just it flickered for an instant. So then it it all it didn't truly activate.
Jim:I get what you're saying. I don't think I can sign off on it.
T.C.:Okay. That's fine. I I'm just trying to think of a better ending. Like, you suggesting that he rivets rivets himself and does not seem it doesn't feel exciting enough. Sure.
Jim:I what do you think about trying having an ending where that what I I I see what you're saying. We'll get our act we can get we can get our action sequence in there. That is important. It is it does happen in Event Horizon. Mhmm.
Jim:There should probably be more than one, though. How how would it go?
T.C.:Well, we've got we've got the the first time his friend is killed as a sequence. We have the him and the faith and the faithful guy running and getting him getting killed. There's a second action sequence there.
Jim:We can also just sort of incorporate in in sort of between each of these sort of events, they have this they're they're given leave. Right? Like, oh, we don't wanna keep you in in space too long or or in in zero g
T.C.:Yeah.
Jim:Or artificial gravity or whatever. I don't know. Some excuse so they keep sending them away. Why are they doing that? Who knows?
Jim:When they get back, think the the higher ups have have stayed there. Who know who knows why? Mhmm. Basically, to suggest they're doing things sort of in these in these interims when no one's around. Sure.
Jim:What am I building to?
T.C.:An action sequence.
Jim:Sort of. Yeah. To suggest they've been having these bloody rituals bunches of times, and this last time our main character is kept Mhmm. Is is thought to be in on it now. Mhmm.
Jim:And he's brought in. And what if he is is brought a living innocent victim? Like and, like and, like, there's a bunch. There's a circle of people and they're already, okay. Everyone get your knives ready and go.
Jim:And he's like, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna can't I can't I can't no. This is wrong. And that's when he goes on a kill the cultists Okay. Spree. Yeah.
Jim:Yeah.
T.C.:Get them.
Jim:Yeah. To to to get them. And then or or like he refuses and they're like, well, if you're not gonna do it, you're gonna be the sacrifice.
T.C.:If you're not with us, you're against us.
Jim:Yeah. That that kind of thing. If you are not eating, you are eaten. So that that is the sequence where he's now killing a bunch of them. What he doesn't know that that that'll sort of be explained in a denouement is that is that actually plays into their hand as well.
Jim:They Because they're dying on
T.C.:this sacrifice.
Jim:Yeah. One they they were all planning on going anyway.
T.C.:So
Jim:something like that. And what ends up happening, I don't know whatever our culmination is, whatever happens to our main character and and, ultimately, we we even see this this cult was bigger than just the 10 guys at the top Mhmm. Or just under Weir. There's basically a bunch of janitors who come in and clean it all up. Mhmm.
Jim:They they do that every two weeks because this this is what they've been doing. So then when Weir comes on in that to to check things out, alright. Everything seems to be on the up and up. Ship shape? Yeah.
Jim:Meanwhile, all of our all of our cultists
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Have have been have been murdered ritualistically and incorporated.
T.C.:I I I like all that, but
Jim:I don't know what what's happened to our main character. You want our main character to already go to hell.
T.C.:Well, no. Not necessarily. I like this what you've just suggested. That's a great pitch. I like that that he gets to run and gun and and fight these guys and take them all out.
T.C.:And, once he's completed, it's like, thank you. You actually did exactly what you wanted to. Like, no. How does that play into the visions of hell and of his brother? What is that is that who finally thanks him is this vision of his brother?
T.C.:Sure.
Jim:There you go. That's great. And and ultimately, I was thinking that's why he would he would relent and incorporate himself
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Into it as his brother is like, come. Come to where I'm at. Mhmm. Come to me. And that's the only way our protagonist knows
T.C.:how. Yeah.
Jim:That that's that's sort of that's ultimately where I was going. I don't know if that works with with what you're thinking.
T.C.:No. Mean, we're brainstorming here. I I as long as we the the nightmare connection to whatever this supposed hell is, it I if the if he goes in and and runs and guns and kills all the cultists, and then in the end, he's sitting there bleeding, like, covered in their blood, and he's done it. He's saved everyone from this evil, and a vision of his brother comes to him in the drive room, like, in the Sure. Yeah.
T.C.:Like, he that's where his final moments are is he's, like, at the drive, and the his brother appears to him. He's like, thank you. You did it. You've you've done it. You've like, I are you okay?
T.C.:Are you in hell? I if all this was real, if what they were doing is real, are you really here right now? Tell me what I'm saying. Like, what do you think you're seeing right now? Just some sort of No.
T.C.:I fucked up.
Jim:What do you think what do you think about so we keep coming back to this this drive room. Mhmm. And there's there's lots of sections that are incomplete and being completed as the movie goes. But there's one we the visually, we keep focusing on one one specific compartment. Mhmm.
Jim:And in the end so he has this confrontation with with his brother who who's like, this this is good. No. You've done good. It is for it is for good. Yes.
Jim:I am in hell, and you're gonna this is going to get me out.
T.C.:This will free me.
Jim:Yeah. You there there's just I don't know I don't know. Either we say it blatantly or somehow allude to it that there's just one
T.C.:step left. One last thing you have to do. Yeah.
Jim:And then we don't necessarily see him do it. Mhmm. But there either can be pleading like is that's the only way that's as something like that. Yeah. Or like anything for you or or whatever, something like that.
Jim:Mhmm. So that when we see Weir come in and he goes to the drive room, like like, the gyroscope isn't even on the ship yet. He's come on in the day when they're gonna place it in the in the the cradle.
T.C.:Maybe that's the ticking time clock the clock that they're deal that all this needs to be complete before the drive's in place. Sure. That's the ticking clock. Yeah. So And So go ahead.
Jim:Finally, when we see him come in, the room is complete, and we focus we focus on that compartment. Mhmm. And I don't know some way to to allude to it other than what we're doing. Basically, I wanna put this man in a box.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay.
Jim:What do you think of of of that that his his brother has convinced himself to incorporate himself into the ship to come get him?
T.C.:So is he just waiting there for the moment the Event Horizon, like, activates the drive and he comes out of the panel? Like, what you're placing him in the box. Yeah. Is is
Jim:he is he He's dead. He's a part of the ship.
T.C.:He's dead and part of the ship. Yeah. Okay. So our our protagonist gets in this is the final sacrifice. Gets in there and and he's like, alright.
T.C.:Okay. I'm here. Just tell me when. Just tell me when my time has come. Weird.
T.C.:Like, loses his mind sitting in there until he he he drifts away Oh. And dies. Sure. Like, mean, what's your suggestion? He goes and he rivets himself into a box and then what?
T.C.:And he's dead. Does he kill himself?
Jim:By putting himself in the box.
T.C.:Yeah. Oh, so he I'm confused.
Jim:We don't see if he suffocates or starves Right.
T.C.:That's what I'm bleeds out. We just see him go into the panel.
Jim:We we just know we know that he is under the pyramid. Okay. And So what okay. What this is telling me is, do you want answers to that? That it's unsatisfying.
Jim:I'm not sure. I I I'm not partial to any particular death.
T.C.:Well, okay. Here here's let me see if this works.
Jim:In fact, self self sacrifice suicide kinda horribly fits the theme.
T.C.:If he's gonna go to hell. He puts himself in the space. The drive is checked. We get a little bit of, like, fade to black fade up, and the launch of the Event Horizon occurs, and he's he's still he's still sitting. We see him in the green panels of the, like, the the matrix hallway that we saw we're in.
T.C.:And he's there, and he's like, is it time yet? Is it time yet? Am I supposed to do it yet? It's like, just a moment. The time's coming.
T.C.:The time's coming. And then we hear the the we get to see it recreated or using footage of them like, alright. We're gonna activate the drive now. It's time now. It's time now.
T.C.:It's time now. And then as soon as the drive goes on, our main character just gasps. We see the warping of all reality and hell spilling out, and then that's it. And that's and that's the end of the movie. Yes?
T.C.:No?
Jim:Do personally, no. If if you like that, we we can we can I I just think he's he's he's dead in the box?
T.C.:I I understand that he's dead in the box. I don't understand how and when he died.
Jim:When he put himself in there. I still don't understand how he's dead. Okay. Then then let's let's expand this a bit more. I his brother says, I need you to come to me.
T.C.:Okay.
Jim:And he doesn't put himself in the box. Instead, he he kills himself. We're gonna incorporate some sort of off top of head a knife. It can be something more subtle than that. Okay.
Jim:That belonged to his brother. Mhmm. And so he kills himself with it. And Right there in the in the room. Yeah.
Jim:Moments pass, and the cleanup crew comes in. Got it. The cleanup crew puts him in the box. Okay. Seals it up.
T.C.:Got it. Then
Jim:we Cleans everything up.
T.C.:And then Weir comes in, and they drop the drive in Okay. I accept. Okay. I'm no longer confused. Okay.
T.C.:The the the prequel of the Event Horizon has been written or at least pitched. Yeah. Cool. Wanna take a break? Yeah.
T.C.:Do you wanna pitch a sequel? Yeah. Okay. Thank you for satisfying me. I I No.
T.C.:No.
Jim:That that's okay.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay.
Jim:I I I was going off ambiguous notions of and then the thing happens, and and you wanted more than that. No. That is fair.
T.C.:I need to know. Alright. Well, Sullivan, I'll we're gonna leave it there to everyone listening, but to our studio that we're we're trying to satisfy the demand for. Color me surprised. We got ourselves a full prequel, and we're gonna take a break here and come back and see if we can't concoct a sequel.
T.C.:Right? Right. Okay. So here's some messages from our wonderful network. Be right back.
T.C.:Oh, and we're back. Okay. Here we go. We we cool? I hope I didn't frustrate you by
Jim:No. It's okay. It's sometimes sometimes things can be frustrating. It's okay. Okay.
Jim:But okay. So Also Yeah. Just a small detail of how they pitch to him, why it's okay. Put at at the point they need to justify putting bodies into there there he learns he and the rest of the crew have been doing that the whole time. Mhmm.
Jim:They've actually been incorporating special coffins, essentially Mhmm. With dead people in
T.C.:them. Without even knowing it.
Jim:Yeah. Because, basically, once he finds out they're going to hell, they're like, and that's why we've been putting all of these bodies in the hull. We can protect from radiation, from all of these cosmic rays and all that, but the only thing to protect us from hell is going to be us. That's a lie.
T.C.:But yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I buy that.
T.C.:I buy that. That sounds good, man. Alright. But it's sequel now.
Jim:Sequel. Okay. So So he climbs out of the box. Right. No.
Jim:Two movies later.
T.C.:Everything we set up coincides with the Event Horizon as we've got it. Doesn't contradict anything. Mhmm. Adds a little bit of mythology to what the Event Horizon is. So now we have Stark and Cooper have been woken up.
T.C.:They had 70. The the movie ends seventy two days later and they are saved. And Justin is there too, although he was pretty he was pretty much
Jim:out of it. Justin is key to my sequel.
T.C.:Oh, okay. I mean, he has been to hell and back.
Jim:Yep.
T.C.:So that's that's pretty significant. So Stark, Cooper, Justin, are we picking up? Like, I'm I if you've got an idea already, I'm I'm happy to jump I'm jump happy to jump right in.
Jim:More promising, I I don't have much more than what I what I just said.
T.C.:Justin's the key. He's been to hell at the end.
Jim:Yep. Okay. The the idea being something like well, again, this is a government program. Mhmm. The government wouldn't just say, nope.
Jim:It's gone.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Oh, well, too bad. They didn't even do that with Event Horizons when it went wrong the first time.
T.C.:Right. Go get that thing.
Jim:Yeah. Mhmm. So they would do what they can to find out what happened. Mhmm. They would get full reports from the three of them.
Jim:Mhmm. And I think Justin's would have the most compelling information that I think they would think they would have a handle on. We can handle this. Mhmm. He would present himself as as knowing what to do.
Jim:Like, quite clearly, mentally, he's rattled. Mhmm. Also, I think some some time has passed. I don't know how much time Interestingly, do we recast? Do we try to get those same actors?
T.C.:Let's let's in
Jim:thirty does the project take thirty years to send some people out?
T.C.:Let's let's talk recast. Let's imagine this is taking place however many days you want it to take. I I wanna make a suggestion if you if you don't mind me jumping in here, is that we are now in route from where they woke them up back to Earth or Mars or the moon.
Jim:Oh, you wanna aliens this. Yeah. I I actually would especially for rather than recasting the same characters
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:I would almost rather jump bunches of years
T.C.:Okay.
Jim:And have a new cast.
T.C.:Okay. But since Justin's been to hell, if he's still comatose, and he's been comatose for thirty years, and he wakes up. And he they they have not been able to recreate the drive because Weir's dead. I don't know. And if he wakes up just as a soft pitch, he wakes up and starts drawing.
T.C.:Like, he knows the design. Like, it's in him. The design is in him. Keeping in mind, we've already created a lore that this is not just science. This is also this ritualistic stuff.
T.C.:Yeah.
Jim:Okay. But I don't want that to have happened soon before No.
T.C.:No. Like, like years.
Jim:So just I'm I'm saying Justin wakes up, we'll say, twenty five years. Mhmm. The movie and and we get a a shot of that. Right? A little montage of him waking up and drawing stuff and then be like, this is weird.
Jim:Five years after that Yep. We start our actual mission. We meet our space marines. Okay. I'm just gonna say it.
T.C.:We're doing Yep. I'm gonna
Jim:call We're it doing Event Horizons. Events
T.C.:Horizons.
Jim:Events Horizons. Now and and also those five years that passed, whatever crazy manic scribbly man came out of of the the the the coma Mhmm. That's not who we see presented. We see somebody who has been reassembled to to some degree. He can still have bunches of scars.
Jim:That's that's fine and cool. I I know that that was probably supposed to be like, oh, that's what decom rapid decompression into space did to women. So that was blood coming out. But, man, that looks like like like scarification. Yeah.
Jim:So, like, in my mind, he has, like, evil satanic runes carved into his flesh. Sure. So he could still have that. Mhmm. And so our our new crew is shown is is is brought aboard their brand new ship.
Jim:This ship is is gonna go to the edge of the solar system.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:You're you're you're going on a a not a rescue mission. Sal salvage? Salve. Yeah. A salvage mission.
T.C.:To Neptune?
Jim:And and in those yes.
T.C.:Oh,
Jim:wow. In those in those years, we've gotten a bit further. Right? We haven't made it to another star yet. Mhmm.
Jim:But but going to Neptune going out that far is easy. However, the problem is spaceships so far can't go from space into atmospheres.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Much less Neptune's atmosphere. The problem with going to Neptune is Neptune is a entirely water planet, if I remember right.
T.C.:Right? Or
Jim:is it Uranus that's entirely water? Thought it was Neptune. That's why it's called Neptune. So they but a a special ship has been made Mhmm. To go from space into atmosphere and specifically into deep deep water I'll make it heavy gravity
T.C.:Yeah. And then be able to pull itself out. Okay. Neptune's fun. It's an ice planet.
T.C.:Oh. And so we could have, like, a we could have water and ice in this.
Jim:But Okay.
T.C.:Having it having that why have they not gone back in thirty years to to salvage? Because
Jim:that technology of of dropping to the serve well, no. I guess they they can get well, they they can get to the surface of a solid planet Yeah. But getting to the surface of a gas planet.
T.C.:Well, how here here's a suggestion. Maybe Cooper and Stark explain, like, it was destroyed. It got blowed up. Miller went down with the ship. It's dead dead.
T.C.:Now Sullivan had to suggest here that the mission is to save Miller from hell. We don't have to use that. So But but that Stark and Cooper have presented all their information in such a way that they that it was blown up. Oh, that they oh, they they lie. They say, we got it away from from the planet.
T.C.:We were in route home, and it exploded in in the vacuum of space. And and just because they they don't wanna risk any chance of them salvaging trying to salvage it. Like, they've Mhmm. They lied. They covered it covered it up as much as the three of the two of them are the only know what only two that know what happened.
T.C.:And now enough time has passed that someone has someone has detected on through some sort of sensory, ex orbit of Neptune. Like, no. There there are pieces of they this information is false. It blew up planet side, and it is on the surface, and we're gonna go recover that drive.
Jim:We have a couple things to decide.
T.C.:Okay.
Jim:What exactly happened at the end of the movie? Because effect they used looked like it went into the planet Neptune. Mhmm. That is also not what anything looks like when it falls into orbit. Mhmm.
Jim:Did it fold?
T.C.:Oh, you're saying did it jump? Yeah. Oh, may and then maybe it's jumped back?
Jim:No. I I think it no. I think I think the Event Horizon has jumped into hell. Okay. Yeah.
Jim:So it's just sort of gone. So technically, we're if we could open a gate anywhere, we could we could do that.
T.C.:Okay. Yeah.
Jim:We we do it on Mars, we do a little backdoor doom. So we're
T.C.:Yeah. Doom.
Jim:Alright. No. We could still go back out to Neptune. Like, basically, the the the what do you call it, the the sci fi terminology to explain how or why or the the actually, magic reasoning as to why they have to go back to that spot is because reality is thinner where it punches through. Mhmm.
Jim:Sure.
T.C.:And it's our space marines going there? Yeah. Is the the tear of where the jump happened reveal itself to becoming it's been getting thinner?
Jim:Not necessarily. Okay.
T.C.:Why did it take him thirty years to go back?
Jim:Because they didn't know until Justin woke up.
T.C.:Okay. Great. So Justin wakes up and does his scribble scribble scribble
Jim:scribble scribble Maybe they did go back, but they wouldn't know what to look for. They wouldn't know any of that stuff.
T.C.:And he's he's
Jim:They don't have Weir anymore, so they don't have the scientist who knows that science. Sure. Because that's how it works. Only one scientist Yeah.
T.C.:I know it says know science at all. The sci fi way of it. Yes. So he so Justin woke up, and for the past five years, he has been developing the program or the detection or the ability to go, this is the spot.
Jim:Something like that.
T.C.:Yeah. And now a mission has been activated. Even if Justin's not in this, we see him in the prologue wake up, scribble, scribble, scribble. Five years later, we are on the ship en route. It's like, wait.
T.C.:Alright, Marines. Pay attention. Here's what the deal is. We are going to a terror in all of space and fabric of reality, to investigate the last known location of the Event Horizon. This is 60 Years
Jim:ago. I mean, I don't know if I do you do you want to be that on the nose right right up front with what's happening?
T.C.:Stop pitch. Let these marines know what their mission is. So if we look at if we're gonna rip off aliens, let's rip off aliens.
Jim:I get no. More what I mean well okay. So in that that regard, don't think I wanna do that. Mhmm. I don't mind the idea of them saying, okay, marines, the the the Event Horizons was last seen at this location, disappeared Sixty years ago.
Jim:Sixty years ago, presumably sixty. Isn't it thirty?
T.C.:You said it's thirty years ago. It's twenty four. From the event. Oh, right. Right.
T.C.:It's 30 from the Event Horizon. Right. It was it was whatever. Yeah.
Jim:Any anyway, getting caught up in numbers, getting stuck on Math. Unimportant details. We're we're going out there, and I I don't know. I want Justin to be Justin? Yeah.
Jim:Yeah. I I want Justin to be there.
T.C.:Okay. Yeah.
Jim:My notion is he is not Justin. He is something has taken him over. Sure. And is pose and is posing as him. Mhmm.
Jim:And his whole thing is, oh, I I know what's going on here. I know all this stuff. I will guide you through. Mhmm. And then once they're there, it's like, oh, I did it.
T.C.:I having him say as Justin, like, I'll guide you. Mhmm. I'll guide you. So that when he starts showing his evil Mhmm. Let me guide you.
T.C.:I'll guide you to, like Sure. Like, even even turning people one by one so it becomes this trooper marines that are slowly turning on each other.
Jim:Oh, sure. Now oh oh, right. So so they go out there. They don't necessarily know and and Justin has has given them the ability to make something to punch through. Mhmm.
Jim:Not very big, not not for very long, but hopefully long enough to recover what happened. Now I am okay with incorporating Stark and Cooper if we want. Okay. It just it the the the mod the the modern day filmmaking loves, and I I like I like it as well, likes to incorporate the original actor Legacy is such. Yeah.
Jim:And we keep doing it real late,
T.C.:so the people are limited by our physical universe. Between 70 and 80 years old.
Jim:Yeah. So
T.C.:And these two won't be.
Jim:That's that's rough.
T.C.:Yeah.
Jim:But they can we we can incorporate them. Quite literally, they would be they could be it's easy enough for the government to to write it as the government has no reason to let them know that their friend has awoken from a coma Mhmm. And is being crazy. Mhmm. But maybe we do that anyway.
Jim:And they want to because they were also eyewitnesses, they're given an invite to go along with this. Maybe they discuss it, and they're like, hell no. But what about what about Miller? He he wouldn't leave us behind. This is our chance.
Jim:So maybe one of them is, like, we need to go make sure that none of this makes it back, and the other is, like, we need to go find we need to get Miller.
T.C.:See, if if Miller if all of what is possible happened and he is trapped on the other side of
Jim:that game wherever that was.
T.C.:It's hell. Don't it's not that's not what it is. Whatever it is
Jim:Yeah.
T.C.:It's it we owe it to him to go save him. Yeah. So that their mission is to tag along to this ice planet to find that drive in order to rescue Miller. And Justin's actual mission is to open up hell and unleash it? Yeah.
T.C.:Nice.
Jim:Justin's mission is to recover basically, they've they've they've been able to recreate a small a a smaller inferior version of the drive that lets them punch a smaller hole for less time, less distance, essentially, as well. Right? It it doesn't work as well. They don't know why. Mhmm.
Jim:That's why that's a major reason why they want to recover as much of the original The original they
T.C.:can. Yeah.
Jim:Justin presumably has seems to have have a bunch of this already put together. So that's why he's going. Mhmm. Stark and Cooper are invited to go, just because, for for for Ripley reasons.
T.C.:Consultant. They're consultant reasons. Yeah. Even go on and go so far as one of them is in a position of authority. Because the actress would be about 60.
T.C.:The actor would be in his fifties. So they're they would be of age to be admirals or or generals or whatever have you that they could be in a position of of authority enough to say, like, no, I'm going on this mission. We both are. If not, being invited to as some sort of consultants.
Jim:Mhmm.
T.C.:And yeah. They are there. Yeah. Either as consultants or as military advisors or because they're in a position of authority. One way or the other, they're on this trip.
T.C.:Getting them to land on Neptune on the ice planet
Jim:So we that that's where we started. We don't have to do that. We don't have to go to Neptune. We don't have to do an ice planet. That's just where we're gonna go to then punch into hell.
T.C.:I like the idea of going to, like, getting on the surface of Neptune in sci fi means to to find the remains. Like, they're literally trying to Oh. Get yeah. So it folded it folded there so near the planet. What if there's
Jim:a huge radius that they they have to go to they they do go to the surface.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:And a huge so there's a huge chunk of Neptune, of this this ice planet that is thin. Right? It's it's the wall between reality and hell is very thin for like 50 miles. Mhmm. So that that idea just so so that that's why they go there, and then when they punch through there, they're on a hell version of the ice planet.
T.C.:Maybe some sort of hybrid of of the the this MC Escher like Camille Del Toro presents the ship and the planet have combined. So we see, like, the gangplanks that go from from and to nowhere melted in, like, just this warped reality that as soon as they cross this threshold, they're at the event horizon of hell. That it's they it is this it is the that's the threshold between this reality and the next.
Jim:Okay.
T.C.:And if if the goal is to find the drive.
Jim:That's that's the mission.
T.C.:Yeah. That's the mission. The mission is to recover the drive. Mhmm. Because while Justin has been able to map it out.
T.C.:Make a temporary device. Make a temporary device. It's not they need just because it's the MacGuffin, they need the as much of the original drive as they can. And maybe even the device he created is is somehow linked in such a way to go, like, the original drive is there.
Jim:What if I'm I'm less enthused to go to to go down to Neptune
T.C.:Oh, okay.
Jim:Anymore. If you want to go there, if you have ideas for it, I'm open to it.
T.C.:That's set piece. We don't have you just wanna go to
Jim:the the That was that was the original idea, and then I realized, well, we don't we don't actually have to do that. Okay. We need to get to the Event Horizon. We need to get to the ship. Right.
T.C.:But that's just where the ship was. Is is it it disappeared there, so why not go there?
Jim:Yeah. But it didn't necessarily disappear on the planet. It it doesn't matter. I'm arguing a a a dumb point. I I think that I feel like the planet makes too big of a space.
Jim:I realized it was already a big spaceship, but keeping it on just the spaceship floating in space.
T.C.:Okay. So the Event Horizon comes back.
Jim:So my new idea
T.C.:Okay. Is
Jim:just the the device Justin has made
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Doesn't actually punch through to hell. Mhmm. He explains to them that the Event Horizon has is stuck in the middle of a fold. Right? Okay.
T.C.:Okay. And I've made a device that will help pull it back out. Okay. Great. So when okay.
T.C.:I like that. That he they get there, they activate it, and it comes back into reality, and now we have the same ship to have our adventure on?
Jim:Yeah. And not it's been gone for thirty years. Mhmm. We can do, a, we can do weird stuff to that ship.
T.C.:I'd like to do that.
Jim:We can do more. The Things can be attached.
T.C.:This is what I want. Yes. I think when they recall it, it's not the same ship. The same ship is there, but it has been built upon for thirty for three decades. Yeah.
T.C.:Something has continued to construct this thing. Yeah. So it is a monstrosity. Monstrosity. It's not so large that it's plant size, but it's now just thirty years of of it looks like a city folded inside out on itself.
T.C.:There's, like, there's structures and platforms and, like, well, where's the bridge? Like, what is this? Who built it? Mhmm. Because if if we want, we now have a bunch of marines and we hit we could create things to shoot at, whether it's visions of hell people or what have you.
T.C.:Mhmm. Some or that if they're shooting at shadows or my my suggestion is that Justin is slowly turning them all against each other so that we have marines versus marines. Yeah. Just the idea that the ship comes back and it's gigantic. Yeah.
T.C.:It is huge. Like, this is that's that's the Event Horizon. That's not the Event Horizon. I don't know what that is. Yeah.
T.C.:Yeah. So now we have that's a great set piece for them. And and now it's oh, because it's so big, it's a labyrinth. Mhmm. It's a well, we need to still find the core.
T.C.:Yeah. Where's the core? Well, we need to find the original Event Horizon somewhere in that mess. Mhmm. And once we do that, then we we kinda have a sense of the map of the ship.
T.C.:We could find the core. But we need to get in there and map it Mhmm. And figure it out.
Jim:Actually, Justin could say, I've I have that as well. He could have a map of the ship. And then, right, our crew is like, what? Mhmm. What?
Jim:Did You knew this? How did you know this? There's no time. We need to go.
T.C.:Grabbed him by the front of
Jim:the suit. Like, there's no time. A whole need to know need to know kind of thing. Just let me So that right. That's an interesting confrontation.
Jim:Do you think it would happen that quickly that they'd be like, what's going on here, crazy wizard man?
T.C.:Well, here. Let's let's back up to that. But before we get to that point, let's back up. Let's map this out. Because we actually beat out our prequel pretty well.
T.C.:Yeah. Like, we just went
Jim:about it. Beginning beginning Yeah. And the rest.
T.C.:And speed up to the end. Yeah. So our movie opens with some sort of in this year, Event Horizon. This year, it came back. Mhmm.
T.C.:Captain Miller sacrificed himself. There were three survivors. Two of them went on to live. One of them has been comatose. Justin wakes up after being comatose for twenty five years.
T.C.:It's like, oh my god. Doctor. Oh, doctor. Look at this. Or so can you do you hear me?
T.C.:You know, do you know who you are? Tell tell us what you remember. And he's like, I'm I'm fine. I'm fine. I I What?
Jim:What year does the movie take place in?
T.C.:'19 '2 2047.
Jim:2047?
T.C.:Yeah. Okay. And then he's he goes into recovery or whatnot, and then he starts to sketch. And he starts to sketch, and then then five years later. And our marines are already on the ship, like, alright, ladies.
T.C.:Or are they just about to launch? Do we do we go does What do you think? Does Stark walk into Cooper's office and go, we have there's this just hit my desk. What is this? It's a mission.
T.C.:To what? To the Event Horizon. What? It's gone. There's gone.
T.C.:No. We've what what do you mean? It's been it's been thirty years since Justin woke up. What? No.
T.C.:They already know. Justin's been designing things and and the government hired, you know, exposition exposition.
Jim:We will we will have this scene. It might not make it into the final cut, but we'll we will have this scene.
T.C.:And they're sending Justin does a a thank you all for
Jim:They're they're they're planning on they're planning on Salvage mission. They're planning on getting the the Event Horizon back.
T.C.:Yeah. Weir's core is the goal. Lay it out. Mhmm. And then bam boom, doo da fruit.
T.C.:And then we have our marines just like, hey, we're jucking it around. Hey, hey, oh yeah. Oh, Some nerdy scientist guy that's been in a coma for a long time and sent us on. Yeah. Oh, folding time and space.
T.C.:I don't even know how to fold my laundry. Hey, this guy over here. Whatever. So they're they're they're on the way and we even know how to fold my laundry. So we have our our space marines, our roughnecks.
T.C.:Uh-huh. We have Justin here who's overseeing the whole thing, and he's very quiet, nebish, a man who's been through hell and back. Mhmm. And Cooper and Stark last minute have joined the mission as well. Like Yeah.
T.C.:I guess so. Yeah. We're just here for you, Justin. Maybe maybe one of them is already, like Oh, absolutely. Suspicious.
T.C.:Yeah. Like, if not, really.
Jim:When when did you learn quantum mechanics? I I Yeah. Just Stuff like that.
T.C.:Distrust is there. Absolutely. So we we get to the orbit, and it's like his device is like a recall device. It's like Mhmm. What pulls the Yeah.
T.C.:And so there We'll
Jim:have we'll have a wonderful Star Trek shimmy of of the the Event Horizon coming back into this reality.
T.C.:And then it's this massive just this monstrosity. It's like, what is that? That's the Event Horizon. No. It's not.
T.C.:We need to find it in this mess Yeah. To find the core. And and what's the what's more it's not it's not just that it's been built upon for thirty years or wherever the hell it was. It's not
Jim:quite a clock, but to to give us a clock like thing or to to something to to to create a clock out of, when they get out there, it's literally an array of satellites they have to release that focus on a spot that rips it open that allows the event horizon to come through. Yeah. But it doesn't come through. It materializes here. Mhmm.
Jim:So they only have as long as those lasers can hold out. Got it. So if they run out of power, if the satellites get taken out Weather. Things like that Space weather. It will fade back into the between.
T.C.:So it's like a it's like opening up, like ripping open a window for it to come through kind of thing? Like that, or or that it just materializes? It both. They they
Jim:are ripping open time and space. Mhmm. So, no, it's not like a two dimensional window you can open and then it'll come through. It's they're they're they're basically blasting the the the Higgs boson particles Yeah. In this region, and that's allowing the Event Horizon to surface to our reality.
Jim:Got it. Okay. But it won't stay here once the the lasers stop shooting Mhmm. On this point.
T.C.:So yeah. That gives us our ticking clock. And then Yeah. I guess to sort of stick with tradition of what we've done with now the third movie here is if Stark or Cooper, one of them is going to be our POV character essentially. If one of them is already having nightmares before this all starts.
T.C.:Before they like, if if if if we're let's say Stark. So Stark is asleep and wakes up from a nightmare just as Cooper shows up and says, hey. This mission just hit the desk. Justin's going back to the for the Event Horizon. And she just had a nightmare.
T.C.:It's already begun.
Jim:Like Sure.
T.C.:Yeah. I I had a dream last night. I you have you have I have nightmares every night. This one felt different. Something's something doesn't feel right here.
Jim:Wouldn't they pay attention to that more?
T.C.:For movie's sake.
Jim:Okay.
T.C.:I mean, maybe Cooper even says, like, I have been keeping my eye on Justin for thirty years. He's never shown any sign of anything that we should be concerned about other than fact that we're about to go back where this all started.
Jim:He slept for 25 of them.
T.C.:Yeah. And I've been watching for the past one.
Jim:He's been acting super crazy, but that is still it's only one six.
T.C.:So overall, not crazy. If it well, especially if Justin's very put together, he's like, I'm fine. I'm just very calm, and and I'm you know, he's not he's not he's just kinda weird.
Jim:Okay. So so if Stark is our our POV character having dreams, she would be the one who is Suspicious. Suspicious Yes. Of of Justin. Mhmm.
Jim:Like, how do you know quantum mechanics and and all that kind of stuff? Or or even when or maybe she asked Cooper that, and he says, there there are some he maybe what do you think about him seeming dodgy as well? Not not not gonna go full on corporate Mhmm. Like like alien aliens like like Burke. Mhmm.
T.C.:But but he is still being cagey about some stuff. A little bit of, like, the greater good.
Jim:Yeah. Yeah. So so what if his goal his goal is to recover Miller?
T.C.:Yes. Yes. Yes.
Jim:Yes. And that's why he's willing to put up
T.C.:with some
Jim:of this stuff. Yes. And he doesn't wanna tell Stark that right away.
T.C.:A 100. Yeah. Totally agree with that. Okay. That's great because now we sort of have, like, three points of an idea.
T.C.:Like, all three of them have different motivations here. Mhmm. Stark is going along because she's sensing something's wrong. She needs to oversee she needs to see this again.
Jim:Convinces her to come to stop it. Yeah. We're gonna stop this. Yes.
T.C.:And and but Cooper's mission is actually to let this see it through so he can save Miller. Mhmm. And Justin's mission is to unleash hell, although that's not fully revealed until he show it finally shows his true colors.
Jim:And and the justification to Cooper could be or Cooper's justification to Stark when she inevitably asked, well, why are you letting it like, you're high up enough ranking anyway. Why are you letting it happen anyway?
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:And he something like, they won't stop until they get it or they see it's impossible. Yeah. So we're gonna go show them it's impossible. Mhmm. So he's he's telling her right away, we're gonna make sure this fails.
T.C.:We're gonna make sure it fail. But, really, his ulterior motive is, I need it to open. We can say Yeah. There has to be a way to save Miller. Yeah.
T.C.:That's cool. It's sort of yeah. Yeah. I like this. I like this.
T.C.:Okay. So then when we see the revelation of this behemoth and they go on we have our space marines as sort of secondary characters to just be fodder for this whole thing. But our our
Jim:I mean, that's what the pilot and Jason Isaacs. Yeah. And that's what they were there for. So
T.C.:as soon as we're on this thing and they start exploring it and the nightmares start occurring and it's ramping up, I guess, by the once they're on it, we're I want, like, a fifteen, twenty minute point once they're on it.
Jim:Okay. Wait. Wait. Fifteen, twenty minutes into the movie?
T.C.:Is that what you're you're thinking? Because it's funny because normally, you're the one who speeds too fast at this sort of stuff. And I'm like, this is about twenty minutes, maybe thirty if we're really stretching out the narrative. Not stretching out. We are developing these characters as they are, the status quo, the we wanna care enough about these marines.
Jim:I think it's twenty to thirty minutes.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay. Good. So so we're on we get on the ship, and now begins the unraveling of the nightmare Mhmm. Where the marines start acting a little bit, game over, man.
Jim:Yeah. Well, because because they start doing stuff. They they start seeing their their nightmares. Mhmm.
T.C.:Oh, let's let's add a let's let me add a layer here. If because we've had enough time in in our humanity that Mars is a thing and well, let's assume some of the plan moons have been some of these marines are veterans to some war that has occurred in in this time period. Okay. That once they're on the event horizon, the enemy can start coming out. So if they let's say they fought the mar Mars versus the moon kind of thing, and they're veterans of that war.
T.C.:And once they're on the event horizon, they start getting nightmares of the war, and the enemy combatants are on the ship. The enemies are here, captain. You know? And they and now we have nightmares that they can shoot at because the war is in is no. It's we're back.
T.C.:We're back. It's the Martians. It's the Martians. Not green men. They're all humans.
T.C.:But Yeah. So now just just in that element of action and threats and reasons to fire the guns Mhmm. Until they're firing on each other by the end of this.
Jim:We'll come up with a good term. It it won't be Martians. It'll be it'll be something. It'll be something good.
T.C.:Yeah. Titans. If they're on if they're on Jupiter.
Jim:Well, that's not bad. Yeah. There's actually, I think there might be reasons I really like that. Finding finding a term relating to something from the underworld. Okay.
T.C.:Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Certainly, if we're gonna use we're gonna we used Magellan for the the prequel, you know, having some sort of Greek mythology Yeah.
T.C.:Related to the war that's now coming back on the Event Horizon itself.
Jim:Mhmm. Something like that.
T.C.:Yeah. And also, what do you think about that turning corners in the ship separates people with like, in the blink of an eye? Like, Cooper and Stark could be walking side by side. One of them turns a corner, and they're just on a different part of the ship now. That this ship is is moving them around and away from each other.
Jim:You really wanna cube it.
T.C.:Is that what happens in cube, Ike?
Jim:It doesn't happen in cube. Yeah. It happens in hypercube.
T.C.:Oh, okay.
Jim:Cube two hypercube. Cube
T.C.:two hypercube. Just it doesn't have to we don't have to do that.
Jim:No. It it it can. Why how and why would they ever find each other again?
T.C.:Yeah. That's that's fair. I it I'm I'm taking it back. I threw it out there. I'm taking it back.
Jim:It can be a thing that happens in the third act. Mhmm.
T.C.:You we can ramp to that. Once they're getting closer to once they're on the ship and they're exploring it and just the hints of unease is is building here
Jim:Mhmm.
T.C.:What's the first big moment? Okay. Let let me suggest this. We get on the ship. We start exploring.
T.C.:People are are are kinda having their visions and they're hearing things and the unraveling is beginning. Stark's the one who's the most on edge because she's, like, the most suspicious here. Mhmm. And they find the Event Horizon. Within this, they finally find a section that go, this is it.
T.C.:No. Look. This is this is this panel.
Jim:And they have to climb through the window.
T.C.:Oh, yeah.
Jim:That that that shattered out.
T.C.:Yeah. They they climb Maybe yeah. Yeah. And they're in the space, and it's like, okay. We found it.
T.C.:And it's in pristine condition. Like, it isn't it isn't in a and they're like, this is this is we are on the Event Horizon now. And Justin's like, great. Now we can find the core. And Justin, like, shuts a door on them.
T.C.:Like, immediately, once he knows where they are and know what they have to get, he turns on them immediately and shuts, like, slams the door so he can get to the core. Okay. And and now we have we now we launch ourselves into the the latter half of the movie where we're running and gunning in Nightmare Inn, maybe?
Jim:Maybe. Or is that too quick? I think that's too quick. Okay. So thinking about why they're there, thinking about whose goals are what Mhmm.
Jim:I feel like they would get there. I feel I I like the idea of they're already on edge because the ship the ship has expanded. I think it probably looks hellish. I think it's a lot of what they encountered in Event Horizon, maybe even more so. Right?
Jim:Like, there's there's gore on the walls. Mhmm. Unexplainable. Like, who this is extra ship with extra dead bodies? What's going on here?
Jim:But they find the Event Horizon.
T.C.:They find they find the Event Horizon.
Jim:And sorry. You
T.C.:I psyched you out just Yeah.
Jim:They're on the Event Horizon. They make it to the core. That's where so whether we have people paranoid, paranoid and on edge. Mhmm. They make it to the core.
Jim:That's where Cooper almost doesn't even care about the core. He's more interested in, like, he's not here. We gotta go looking for Miller. Like Mhmm. Miller?
Jim:Who's Miller? What are talking about? Miller Yeah. And and stuff like that. Justin is all like, okay.
Jim:Let's get the corps. They're gonna have technology thirty more twenty thirty more years. Gotcha. Real easy technology. The marines are gonna be able to load it up and and hover hover cart it out.
Jim:And so, like, okay. Let's let's Let's go. Get let's get out of here.
T.C.:This is
Jim:what we're
T.C.:here for.
Jim:Stark's like, no. No. We cannot do this. This is not a thing. The marines split.
Jim:Some of them are like, yes. Let's do the job. Get gone. Others like, no. This is this is way creepy.
Jim:I shouldn't be see I shouldn't be hearing children cackling down a hall. You didn't hear anything. Yeah. Right? I heard sounds of the war.
Jim:Really start turning on each other Yeah. Here. Mhmm.
T.C.:Your turn. So so now okay. They they're trying to move the core off the Event Horizon to back to their ship. Yes. So we're we're literally moving the core while while the the escalation of the disagreement is occurring even to the point of guns being drawn and splitting this team in half.
T.C.:Yes. Where oh, like and splitting in such a fact that Cooper's on Justin's side. No. We're gonna move this thing. And and Stark's like, what are you doing?
T.C.:I thought the whole idea here was to make sure this didn't happen, but but Miller's here.
Jim:We we're gonna go find, Stark. You're with me. We're gonna go find basically, Cooper tries taking charge of the situation, split tries splitting the crew. Everyone who wants to who doesn't wanna do it Mhmm. You gotta come save a guy with me.
Jim:Everyone else, you move the Yeah. Maybe that's too too easy, too smooth. But what what do what do think?
T.C.:I I'm I'm suggesting that Miller wants to or sorry. Cooper wants to stay with the core. Because as soon as that core can be activated, he can try to go through it to save Miller.
Jim:Oh. Oh. My insinuate, they brought the ship here.
T.C.:You think Miller's Miller's here. I'm sorry. I'm understanding now. He believes Miller's on the ship.
Jim:Yes. I see. He think he thinks all of them are on the ship.
T.C.:Got it. Got it. Yes. That's better. Okay.
T.C.:So he he wants to I thought the goal was to destroy this thing so we can't get away with it. We will, but first we need to make sure Miller's okay.
Jim:You can't destroy it. That's the whole point to this mission.
T.C.:We were like, everyone is at each other's throat here. It's like and then whatever our our roughneck marine leader is like, alright. Everyone's Shut up. A sergeant takes charge? Okay.
T.C.:This is what's happening. The mission. No. We're not gonna do it, sarge. We well, I mean, the Martians or the Titans are here.
T.C.:It's like, you're all losing your goddamn minds. And then that guy's gotta die first. Sure. As soon as it's the get the core on the main ship and then the ship is leaving, now we have a new ticking clock. So not only do we have this thing holding the thing in place, but we need to get it off the this monstrosity onto our marine ship to get it back to Earth.
T.C.:And and not even that. Even even as we move into the climax of that, as soon as it's in a place where Justin can activate it, he's gonna turn that thing on.
Jim:I don't think he he can't. He's moving it off of he's moving it out of this to put it on a ship. I guess we could say the ship that they have has been retrofitted Yes. Yeah. That's something have it.
Jim:Oh, okay. So okay. So he'd wanna activate it as soon as possible to make the gate permanent. Mhmm. Okay.
Jim:Alright. I'm on board. And
T.C.:now it's just a matter of fighting amongst each other and the nightmares that keep coming out of the out of space here. If this thing is leaking, leaking, like radiation in a sense, it's leaking nightmares just like it did in the first one.
Jim:If if once they get to the Event Horizon, and especially if it's if it's pristine and stuff, the marines wouldn't blink an eye, but the Cooper and Stark would be like, what is happening? Yeah. They look at the logs. What if Miller has left a log? Oh, Cooper has they even find the the divide the the drive Mhmm.
Jim:Cooper has taken a contingent because he's found evidence Miller's alive somewhere in this fractal. Mhmm.
T.C.:Is that true? What do you think? I think no. I think that this is all You
Jim:think it's a trick?
T.C.:It's all a trick of this hell that is is manipulating him into doing this. And and that's a sad truth of what this series has done to people.
Jim:A, how do we prove that? How do we prove that it's lying? Mhmm. B, technically, the the demand already already presumed Miller was in hell Mhmm. And this is a rescue mission.
Jim:That's true.
T.C.:Okay. Okay. Yes. Miller is there. Miller is on the ship, and while Stark and her contingent of marines are fighting Justin and his contingent of marines, and and Cooper has gone off with just a couple people to try to find Miller.
T.C.:Mhmm. Or even if he ends up alone. Oh, let's see. Here we go. He goes off with the contingent of marines.
T.C.:The couple that he have are the ones who have the nightmare of the titans, and they get lost in the hell of their own nightmare. And so now Cooper's on his own, and he finds Miller. Mhmm. And meanwhile, the fight of the core is is unleashing nightmares at them as well, seeing hints of the path. Like, Stark is starting to see more and more.
T.C.:The other marines are starting to see each other as monsters and not even human anymore. And Justin is reveling in all of this, trying to get this device out to his ship.
Jim:I feel like Justin with his hell powers would be making sure the marines that are helping him get the thing out don't succumb to the the visions or or or are attacked by the things. And that could actually be a thing an escalating problem. Like, these marines are moving this thing, and, like, things happen and Justin's like, no. Ignore that. Ignore it.
Jim:Yes. It disappears.
T.C.:Okay. Cooper finds Miller. Yes. Somewhere in this thing. He finds him and and Miller's meditating or sleeping, like, like, he's been somehow surviving and he's very
Jim:I think he's been tortured.
T.C.:Yes. That's what I'm saying. He's he's messed up. Yeah. And he and and Cooper finds, Miller.
T.C.:Miller, I came back for you. I came back for you. And and he and he he he's not fully conscious yet. And then he finally locks in his eyes on Cooper. He's like, what are you doing here?
T.C.:Why are you why did you come back?
Jim:Oh, sure. Sure.
T.C.:Why do you why are you here? Yeah. And and he's like, I came to save you to to so you I I thought you were in hell. I am in hell. This is hell.
T.C.:It's already out. This is it. Nothing is contained. Yeah. We are in it right now.
T.C.:Like, the whole Yeah.
Jim:We can't let it out.
T.C.:The Event Horizon is already hell. Like, if this thing has been leaking nightmare, it's already leaked this space. Like Yeah. The they are in hell right now.
Jim:Is I I wanna I wanna give them a bit of dialogue there that suggests the event horizon is reverse. Is it's it's not we've crossed the event horizon into hell.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:It's when we if if the event horizon if hell crosses the threshold into reality Yeah. Everything is lost. Yeah.
T.C.:And and it already is here. This is it. We are Yeah.
Jim:Yeah. This is hell. You're in hell.
T.C.:You are in hell right
Jim:now. We can't let it out.
T.C.:Yeah. And so as soon as the so Justin doesn't even need to, like he wants to activate this thing further. It's it's, like, it's already bringing hell with it if he, like, crosses, like I I don't know. Yeah. Yeah.
T.C.:Yeah. Yeah. And so
Jim:now I think we're saying this.
T.C.:Okay. So now coup Cooper and and Miller are we need to blow this whole thing sky high. Everyone needs to die kind of thing?
Jim:No. You can't blow up hell.
T.C.:Yeah. It's
Jim:true. There I may maybe that's no. They they want to escape. They would now be on team team destroy the drive.
T.C.:The team Stark. Yeah. So if we just if they destroy the drive, will it, like, implode on itself and pull everything back to where it's supposed to be? Is that the idea? Yep.
Jim:Okay. I'm not sure I understand the the the the term. Basically, if if you just, really, if you just upset the laser array Mhmm. Oh. It'll it'll go away.
T.C.:You're right. The core is is is the MacGuffin that's gonna be a plot, but the way to destroy it is to disrupt the laser array. Yeah. Got it. Who so that's their plan now.
T.C.:If they start taking them out one by one, like, maybe there's guns on this thing and they're like, they brought up the first one and Justin finally is like, oh, no. Yeah. That's not bad. No.
Jim:We've given we've given a clock to the villain.
T.C.:Yeah. Now he's like, shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.
T.C.:No. Get to the ship. We need to get back to the ship now. And then Mhmm. The the marines who are being fueled by nightmare are actually more venom like Oh.
Jim:I actually, I do kinda like the like, so he's doing his best to keep hell from affecting the the marines. But I think in that third act or or maybe second and a half act, whatever Mhmm. The marines are pretty much done. They're they're they're used up, and Justin is actually calling forth demons.
T.C.:Mhmm.
Jim:Right? He's calling forth the hallucinations and nightmares to come help push this thing. Yeah. What what do you think of
T.C.:that? Yes. Like, once he sees that thing blow up and he's panicking now, he's like, come on. Come on. I'm doing this for you.
Jim:And, like, maybe there's there's one marine who who, like, was willing to frag the others Mhmm. Because better to serve in hell than or better to reign in hell and serve in and and he doesn't he doesn't wanna die. He's gonna Benny he's gonna Benny this situation.
T.C.:No comeuppance. No comeuppance. So then Stark does Stark get the the hero? Like, does Stark save the day here? Like, what's what's their big what how does it end?
Jim:So they all get off the event all
T.C.:Our heroes.
Jim:Justin, Cooper, Miller, and Stark Yep.
T.C.:The four of them.
Jim:Get off the Event Horizons or get off the Event Horizon. Mhmm. We see it go like like the the the laser ray gets gets somehow Yeah.
T.C.:The the laser ray shuts down. Event Horizon blinks out of existence, but Justin has gotten
Jim:the He's still gotten the the core. Yeah. And it's gotta be set up. Yeah. And they can't stop him.
T.C.:And they're banging on the walls.
Jim:It too much to just do what they did in Event Horizon? We're like, we gotta blow this ship. We gotta do Now what they would do excuse me. Burping. They will take an an escape pod kind of thing, but it's not gonna be like the Event Horizon was.
Jim:It's not this this big
T.C.:living Yeah.
Jim:It's a pod that will fall to Neptune. So now they're on the surface of Neptune. By having it be the solar system, it's really hard to justify doing sci fi fantasy. Mhmm. Because technically, it's a heavier gravity, and it's darker, and all this stuff.
Jim:So they really wouldn't survive, but my idea is to strand them on an ice planet that the military has to come rescue them from. I don't know if that works or not.
T.C.:Blowing up our our ship and then lifeboating away?
Jim:Yeah. On down down onto a planet rather than just trying trying to, in some way, up the stakes from Event Horizon. Mhmm. I don't know how.
T.C.:Let's let if not Neptune, whatever I know that we're talking about. I know the space of space, and I know it's insane for me to go, let's get to the let's get to Uranus or Uranus. Let's get let's get one over, and we'll get on a moon there, and then it's a terraformed moon. It's it's just a thing.
Jim:The other thing is, fine, Justin has control of the drive room Mhmm. But we have control of the engines. Yeah. And or the rest of the ship.
T.C.:Drive space.
Jim:And so they they just decide to fly away. Mhmm. They fly away from the solar system. They're they're gonna shoot out to and past the Oort cloud.
T.C.:Yeah.
Jim:They're just gonna take this as far far away as they can. Something like that? Sure. Sacrifice themselves? I don't
T.C.:know that that
Jim:why did we ask you Miller? You don't die in hell.
T.C.:Let's I like the notion of it launching, like, let's let's say Justin is like, I'm gonna fire this off. Maybe he even helped build the the a drive that lets him move, not faster than light, but just his goal is like, I'm gonna get back as close to the civilization as I can and activate this thing. And and they're like, alright. You can go from a to b
Jim:because that's it's supposed yeah.
T.C.:Super fast. Great. They they do have control of the engines, and they do launch in the opposite direction so that he flies off into nowhere and and will run out of air or what like, oh, yeah. You got you got your trophy, but there's literally no way you can activate it and get it anywhere. And they are left floating there in their little escape pod.
T.C.:Not I I know crashing them on Neptune, but I think the logic of it is Yeah. Is correct. You're it is logical to have them on this land on that planet. But they Okay. They they blow his ass up.
T.C.:Yeah. Either they strand him or they blow his ass up, but they they they win. The three of them win. Yeah. Somehow.
T.C.:Yeah. They defeated hell Yeah. And and and rescued Miller. Mhmm. And now they're floating there and it's and it's they're free.
T.C.:And now it's just a hope of whether or not they'll be rescued by someone.
Jim:Wait. So they have oh, because they have their ship drives on it. Yes. Yeah. There's still some I'm gonna I'm gonna cogitate on this.
Jim:Okay.
T.C.:But I'm gonna call it there. Okay. For for at least for these initial pitch we'll move into some like continued conversation territory. Probably, yeah. But Mike Sullivan, I was wrong.
T.C.:We got two out of it. I I thought maybe it would have been one movie, but there we go. I I I'm gonna call it right there because we we very energetically got to the the climax here. And now I gotta know, how did we do? It's we're I'm gonna I'm gonna throw it to you, the listeners.
T.C.:You Mike specifically, but of course, anyone listening right now. What do you think? How do we do? Jim, how do what do
Jim:you think? I think we did pretty good. I like it. I have an alternate idea. Oh, well, this It's it's not too different from what we did.
Jim:Mhmm. But it would just map to in Dante's inferno. Oh, that's funny. It it would be them exploring the seven layers of hell till they get to the center, the the the center most
T.C.:Which is
Jim:ice. Which is ice, which is the which is the event horizon.
T.C.:And betrayal according to
Jim:Yes.
T.C.:The Divine Comedy.
Jim:Which they're they're there to find Miller and Weir and Justin to be like, no. I was betraying you the whole time. We knew.
T.C.:We knew, Justin. Yeah. Come on. Are we stupid here? But you can let us know while we did.
