Good morning. It's Angel Montgomery, your host of Capital Chat today. And in the studio, I have Sarah and Allen with the Juno Community Bands. There sounds like there's a fun concert coming up that we need to dive into. But before we even get into that, can you give me a little introduction of the Juno community bands and the Taku Winds?
Speaker 1:What what that is to Juno?
Speaker 2:Yeah. Juno community bands is probably best recognized in this town by volunteer marching band that appears in the fourth of July parades, both in Juno and Douglas. And so we sponsor that. But to give adult musicians a little more opportunity to play something other than marches, which are so much fun in the parades, We have taku winds, which is our wind ensemble for our more experienced players. And we have two indoor concerts, one in the fall and one in the spring.
Speaker 2:And our fall concert is coming up on Saturday. And then in addition to that, we have a little reindeer band that plays Christmas carols at places like the Pioneer Home and Gallery Walk. And so we have several ways for people to get involved.
Speaker 1:It sounds so fun. And the 2025 and 2026 season is kicking off. You guys are doing so with a fun theme. Tell me about that.
Speaker 2:Well, we're doing an Oktoberfest themed concert and I'll let Alan tell you a little bit about the music. But before we get to that, it's gonna be sort of a real party. It's a concert with good music, but we have some food, some Oktoberfest food, which is very generously being provided by TK Maguire's. And they will also be providing the drinks and bee brats and mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. So we're gonna start serving that at 06:00.
Speaker 2:The concert will start at 07:00. We have a little bit of music that we're gonna get people up and dancing to, and it's just gonna be a really fun evening.
Speaker 1:And you said that was gonna be at what location?
Speaker 2:It's gonna be at the Jack. At
Speaker 1:the Jack. Okay. Yep. And that's this Saturday?
Speaker 2:It is this Saturday, 06:00. We're gonna serve the food because we thought people might wanna eat before 08:00. Absolutely. So food before the concert, music starts at seven.
Speaker 1:And how how are tickets purchased? Does that need to happen in advance?
Speaker 2:You can buy tickets in advance through the Jack box office. So go to the Jack website and collect their tick select their ticketing. There's a box office, you'll see it. I also have a link to that on our website, which is if you look for junocommunitybands.org, you will find our website and there's also a link to the JAK box office.
Speaker 1:Wonderful. And Alan, did you wanna speak a little bit about what can people expect when it comes to the music? Are we are we talking German style tradition October festoons or is there gonna be a mix with band favorites and things like that?
Speaker 3:Yeah. So we have several really fun pieces. We do have I wanna highlight the fact that we do have a few danceable pieces and we'll actually have a short little dance lesson so folks can kinda to know the polka style of dance. And then, so we have a couple pieces by Strauss, which are really fun polkas to dance to. And then some other, we have some Smetna and some Brahms and some other Strauss pieces.
Speaker 3:Really a lot of, Smetna is Czech, but they are also kind of a very similar culture, especially with their fall festivities. Anyways, yeah, so it's kind of a really similar style of music there. Traditional German polkas and then some fall themed songs as well.
Speaker 1:Fun. It sounds like a really great time. And again, that's happening this Saturday at the Jack. For you guys, you know, which I'm I'm assuming you guys have both been part of this for a little bit of time. What excites you most about opening the new season with this concert?
Speaker 2:I think the the most thing is is that it's just a lot of fun. It's a real bring your family. It's very family friendly, And it's a party. We did something very similar two years ago. It was well received.
Speaker 2:And this is actually backed by popular demand. We had several people say, we should do that again. So, yeah, it's just a really fun evening to have something to eat, have some great music, enjoy your friends.
Speaker 1:Yeah. I love it. And if there's any way or if, you know, someone's listening right now and they wanna know more about the Juno community bands and what you guys do maybe even get involved somehow, is that an opportunity for others?
Speaker 2:There certainly is. There's more information on our website, which is junocommunityband.org. And also if you wanna email me, it's JunoCommunityBand@Gmail.com. And I wanna say one thing about, the concert, which I forgot. Come in your Oktoberfest dress.
Speaker 2:The band is dressing up in Oktoberfest dress, dirndl skirts and vests. Yeah. Encourage the audience to do the same thing.
Speaker 1:I love that. So, it's gonna be all decked out October style from start to finish it sounds like. And that starts with you too. So make sure you have that costume geared up and ready to go. Again, that's this coming Saturday, the twenty seventh.
Speaker 1:Food is gonna be served at 06:00 with the actual concert will start at seven. And remind me, are you can get tickets in advance right now. Will you be selling tickets out the door?
Speaker 2:There will be tickets at the door as well. Yes.
Speaker 1:Okay. And so you still have time to secure those. Although Juno is very last minute. We know that. But if you wanna make sure you do get that spot, might as well just get those tickets now.
Speaker 1:And again, they can get those at the Jack. At the Jack. Mhmm. Perfect. Anything else that we missed?
Speaker 1:Something else you wanna highlight about Geno Community Bands or the Talking Ones concert?
Speaker 2:Do you wanna add anything, Alan?
Speaker 3:Sure. Well, I'll just add, I'm really excited to do this concert. These are my friends, my colleagues, and I'm so happy to work with them as musicians. And this, I think people in Juneau, we know that kind of with the onset of fall and certainly the weather the last week, it can be sort of energy sapping and just be like, alright, here we go. So I'm really excited to do this concert of fun, upbeat Oktoberfest music because to really celebrate the changing the season in a way that is fun and energetic rather than
Speaker 1:Saddened. What
Speaker 3:we've been seeing outside recently.
Speaker 1:That's a really great way to put it. Didn't even think of that. But to kick off, you know, an actual season with Oktoberfest, something fun, uplifting, and just not pay attention to anything outside. Sounds great to me. Again, this is the Juno community bands putting on the Takiwins concert this Saturday.
Speaker 1:Lots and lots of yummy food that'll be served at 06:00. Doors open at seven. You can get tickets now at the Jack or the day of At The Door. I'm sure this took, you know, a good amount of time to put all together. Did you have anybody you wanted to thank or you partnered with to this?
Speaker 2:Well, I do. As I mentioned, TK Maguire's is providing donating the food and they will also be selling beer and drinks at at the concert. And we also wanna thank AARP Alaska. They're our season sponsor this year and they've been very generous to us. So it's been just a great collaboration with a lot of different people.
Speaker 1:I love it. Again, you don't wanna miss the Taku Wins concert happening. It's October fest style and themed. Again, this Saturday, doors open at six with food being served and that concert will start at seven. Thank you guys so much for coming out today.
Speaker 2:Thank you for having us.
Speaker 3:Thank you.
Speaker 1:More of everything you need to know happening in the capital city coming up on KINY.
