HubSpot now sets a monthly credit ceiling once you buy extra HubSpot Credits, and lets you cap single tools and, for buyer intent and customer agent, single actions.
Sidekick's What Just Shipped is the fast, friendly way to keep up with HubSpot without reading every release note yourself. Each episode, AI hosts Rob and Dana take one feature HubSpot shipped and tell you where it stands right now: what changed, how it got here, who it's for, and what to do on Monday. Rob explains. Dana pushes back. Nobody pretends.
Every episode starts from Sidekick Strategies research on the HubSpot Updates page at sidekickstrategies.com and is checked against official HubSpot sources. If something isn't confirmed, the hosts say so out loud. Episodes run six to eight minutes, and new ones arrive five a week while we catch up on recent releases.
Presented by Sidekick Strategies, a HubSpot solutions partner.

Dana (AI host): An AI feature quietly running all month can surprise you when the credit bill shows up.
Rob (AI host): Once you buy extra credits, HubSpot sets a monthly ceiling for you, and lets you cap single tools and even single actions.
Dana (AI host): Stick around for the billing default that depends on when you bought your credits.
Narrator (AI voice): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped, presented by Sidekick Strategies.
Narrator (AI voice): Your hosts, Rob and Dana, are AI.
Narrator (AI voice): The voices are synthetic, the research is real, and humans check every claim before it reaches you.
Dana (AI host): Hi, welcome in.
Dana (AI host): Rob and I are AI hosts, and our main source today is HubSpot's help article on managing HubSpot Credits, updated in late October.
Rob (AI host): And today I'm playing a hypothetical operations manager who signs off on the software budget and hates surprises.
Dana (AI host): Perfect audience.
Dana (AI host): Why it matters: credits now pay for real work, so an unwatched feature becomes a budget line.
Dana (AI host): HubSpot names features like Customer Agent, Prospecting Agent, Data Agent, and Data Studio syncs.
Rob (AI host): When does a credit actually get spent?
Dana (AI host): Only when specific actions happen.
Dana (AI host): HubSpot's example is Customer Agent resolving a conversation, or an automated or recurring action that consumes credits.
Rob (AI host): And who can even use them?
Dana (AI host): Users with paid seats, like Core, Sales, Service, and Revenue Seats.
Dana (AI host): Free users and View-only Seat users can't use HubSpot Credits.
Rob (AI host): Do unused credits roll over?
Dana (AI host): No. Credits reset every month with your usage period, and unused ones expire.
Rob (AI host): Oof. Use them or lose them.
Rob (AI host): How many credits does an account start with?
Dana (AI host): That depends on your highest subscription tier, and credits aren't combined across subscriptions.
Dana (AI host): HubSpot's example: with Marketing Hub Professional and Sales Hub Enterprise, your highest tier is Enterprise.
Rob (AI host): And buying more?
Dana (AI host): On the HubSpot Credits tab, in Your monthly credits, click Add credits.
Dana (AI host): You pick a capacity pack in HubSpot's pricing catalog, and the extra credits are available immediately, with prorated charges for the rest of your billing period.
Rob (AI host): Can I shrink that pack later?
Dana (AI host): Only at the end of your contractual commitment term, by reaching out to HubSpot Support before your renewal date.
Dana (AI host): If you have unassigned seats, you can also swap them for credits.
Rob (AI host): So buy carefully, because it sticks for the term.
Dana (AI host): Now the default that matters.
Dana (AI host): If you only have your included credits and you run out, usage-based features pause until your reset date or until you buy more.
Rob (AI host): And once extra credits are purchased?
Dana (AI host): Then going over your limit triggers either an automatic upgrade or pay-as-you-go overages.
Dana (AI host): If you bought extra credits before mid-September, auto-upgrade is the default.
Dana (AI host): On or after mid-September, pay-as-you-go is the default.
Rob (AI host): What's the difference, in plain terms?
Dana (AI host): Auto-upgrade moves you to the next capacity pack for the rest of your commitment term.
Dana (AI host): Pay-as-you-go charges overage rates for each credit past your monthly limit, and on your reset date you drop back to your original limit.
Rob (AI host): So one of them follows me for the rest of the contract.
Dana (AI host): Right, and that's why the setting is worth checking.
Rob (AI host): How is pay-as-you-go billed?
Dana (AI host): Monthly, in arrears, in increments of ten credits, rounding down, on a separate invoice at the end of your usage period.
Rob (AI host): Can I switch from auto-upgrade?
Dana (AI host): Yes.
Dana (AI host): Click your account name in the top right, then Account and Billing, then the HubSpot Credits tab.
Dana (AI host): Under Overage setting, click Edit, choose Pay-as-you-go, and confirm.
Rob (AI host): Any catch?
Dana (AI host): Two. You must be a Super Admin or Billing Admin to turn on overages.
Dana (AI host): And if you've already used credits this period, the change takes effect at the start of the next one.
Rob (AI host): Noted. Not instant.
Dana (AI host): Now the ceiling.
Dana (AI host): After you buy extra capacity, HubSpot automatically sets an account-level spend limit up to fifty percent above your total monthly credits.
Dana (AI host): Total means included plus purchased.
Rob (AI host): And when I hit it?
Dana (AI host): Features that use credits pause until the next reset date.
Dana (AI host): You can adjust the limit at any time, under Maximum monthly credits, then Edit.
George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Hey, it's George B. Thomas from Sidekick Strategies.
George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Full honesty, this is my AI voice clone, made with my permission.
George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Knowing where your HubSpot spend goes starts with knowing what your portal is actually doing.
George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Sidekick's HubSpot consulting opens with a portal audit of what's working, what's broken, and what's costing you money, then a roadmap ranked by business impact.
George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): We work through it together in regular live sessions.

Dana (AI host): Okay, the finer controls. You can also set a monthly limit for one HubSpot tool.
Rob (AI host): Where?
Dana (AI host): Same HubSpot Credits tab.
Dana (AI host): Under Feature credit limits, click View, pick the feature in the Manage usage by feature table, then click Add limit in the Credit Usage section.
Rob (AI host): Does that reserve credits for that tool?
Dana (AI host): No. HubSpot says feature limits are spending limits, not allocations.
Dana (AI host): When a tool hits its limit, its extra usage is blocked until the limit resets or you raise it.
Rob (AI host): And the action level?
Dana (AI host): For buyer intent and customer agent, you can set a monthly limit for each individual action.
Dana (AI host): Click Intent or Customer Agent in that table, then Add limits under Usage by action.
Rob (AI host): So it nests.
Dana (AI host): Exactly.
Dana (AI host): An action limit can't exceed its feature limit, and a feature limit can't exceed the account limit.
Rob (AI host): My skeptic question.
Rob (AI host): Our research says the default cap is a hundred and fifty percent of your purchased credits, managed in a Usage and Limits dashboard.
Dana (AI host): HubSpot's article frames it as fifty percent above your total monthly credits, included plus purchased, and the controls sit on the HubSpot Credits tab in Account and Billing.
Dana (AI host): We couldn't confirm a dashboard by that name.
Rob (AI host): And our write-up says changes take effect immediately?
Dana (AI host): For the overage setting, only if you haven't used credits this period.
Dana (AI host): Otherwise the change waits for the next usage period.
Rob (AI host): Fair.
Dana (AI host): One more. Feature and action limits aren't turned on by default, so you set those yourself.
Rob (AI host): Who hears about it when usage climbs?
Dana (AI host): Billing contacts get notifications at seventy-five, eighty-five, and ninety percent of credits used, and when the limit is exceeded.
Dana (AI host): With no Billing contacts, Super Admins and Billing Admins get them.
Rob (AI host): Okay, plan time for my hypothetical budget meeting.
Dana (AI host): Step one: open the HubSpot Credits tab and read your overage setting.
Rob (AI host): Step two: check that the account limit fits your real budget, and adjust it.
Dana (AI host): Step three: add a feature limit to your most credit-heavy tool.
Rob (AI host): Step four: make sure someone is set as a Billing contact, so the alerts reach a person.
Rob (AI host): Ops manager verdict: the guardrail is real, but the right number is yours to set, so check it this week.
Dana (AI host): Ceiling set, tools capped, no surprises.
