GARMENTS OF LIGHT

G-d made Adam and his wife leather garments, and He dressed them. (Genesis 3:21)

In Rebbi Meir’s Torah it was written “garments of light.”
(Bereshis Rabah 20:12)

After the sin of the Tree of Knowledge, Adam and Chava (Eve) made clothes for themselves from fig leaves. Later,
G-d made them more durable leather garments. Kabballah explains that these leather garments represent everything that covers our true self and essence, including our thoughts, our words, our actions, and even our own self-image. When these things are disconnected from who we really are, they create a thick façade between us and the world.
Rebbi Meir, however, was able to look beyond the present state of affairs and see the time of Moshiach. In this more perfect state, everything that we do will perfectly express who we are. Therefore, our garments will be garments of light; they will reveal our soul.
True modesty means dressing, thinking, speaking, and acting in a way that reveals the soul within. By being careful to act with modesty in all of our ways, we will merit the light of Moshiach.
