What is Chapter + Verse?

A faith-forward podcast for people who love Jesus but also love being honest about how weird and wonderful life can be. Hosts Kerrye and Jill tell stories about the Bible, talk about their faith, and dig into what it looks like to follow God through the ordinary chaos of everyday, imperfect life. Real conversations. Real stories. No pretending to have it all together. Pull up a chair, turn the page, and let's go.

Welcome to Chapter and Verse, where people
come on and tell their real stories,

faith, failure, redemption, and the
occasional, "Lord, what are you doing?"

moment.

Some inspiring, some messy, and some that
probably should have come with a warning

label, because through every chapter
of every story, God is still writing.

And He's not afraid of a little chaos.

This is Jill.

And Kerrye.

Let's turn the page.

Before we start our podcast today,
we just want to feature one of

our favorite local businesses.

It is Divine and Co.

They are located at
121 East Harrell Drive.

Jill, what do you love
about Divine and Co.?

I love that they have all kinds of stuff.

They have clothes.

They have, like, the little, I
don't know what they're called.

The koozie.

Those, like, the little koozie
things, but they're metal, and you

can put in, like- Yes … skinny cans.

Like, Alani cans fit in there,
or, like, Ghost cans fit in there.

All of the different cans fit in there.

They're great.

It keeps your drink cold, and they have-
Keeps your drink cold, and they have all

different kinds of- They have really cool-

designs.

They've got perfume in there.

Mm-hmm.

It's great.

They've got bookmarks.

They've got, like, Bibles
and all kinds of stuff.

There's…

Do you want it?

It's in Divine and Co.

If you haven't gone by there to see all
their things and the different booths that

are in there, you should check it out.

It's close to Salon 286.

Yep.

And- Also shout out to Salon 286-
Yeah, we love you too … Family.

But, um, go by there.

Um, we love the owners,
and- Chrissy's great.

She is.

She'll figure out a way
to get you what you need.

Yeah.

If she, for some crazy way, doesn't
have it, she'll figure it out.

Yeah.

But we just wanted to take
time and shout out to them.

Um, go by and see them.

Yep.

You won't be regretting it.

No, you won't.

Bye.

Bye.

. All right, well, we're back,
and it's just Jill and I today.

Do you wanna sing our song?

Jill and Kerrye.

Jill and Kerrye.

Jill and Kerrye.

Jill and Kerrye.

Yeah.

Just two, two little verses of it.

Um, we need to make verses to that.

That is the chorus.

I mean…

We, we'll work on it.

It needs to be really monotone.

That- Da, na, na, na, na, na, na … that
needs to be a Patreon exclusive.

It does, yeah.

We'll put that- You get all
the verses and the singing.

We'll put that behind a paywall.

Yep.

Okay, so today we're going to be talking
about our third jerk of the Bible, and-

It's been a long time coming for this one.

It has.

I just, I immediately thought of Samson.

I know we've mentioned
it in another episode.

Um, but he was…

I guess, you know, we
t- talked, is he a jerk?

Is he just arrogant?

Is he an idiot?

But all those- Yes … all
those things equal a jerk.

The answer is yes-
Yes … to all of the above.

So, um, and we liked him.

We like him.

Like, he ended good, not like Jonah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Well, I'm sure Jonah ended good, but yeah.

And again, yeah.

Jonah just has some, um…

We know the end of Samson.

Yes.

We don't know the end of Jonah, so.

Yes.

So this is found in Judges 13 through
16, what we're gonna be talking about.

We're just gonna go through and read it.

So- Yep … by the way, if kids are
listening, probably not let them listen

to this, um, because there was some
stuff- There was some scandalous behavior

with, with Samson, and we'll do a kids
version sometime, but- Yeah, maybe

Dewey- I mean, I just wanted to give
that little disclaimer … stay out.

You know, sometimes the Bible is
very plain, and it's truthful,

but I remember listening with
my kids on the way to school.

Every morning we would listen to
15 minutes of the Bible, and had to

answer a lot of questions that I wasn't
prepared to answer on the way to school.

Yep.

It was busy, and I was…

It was morning, and I
was like, "Oh, I can't."

But, um, and you're feel- Understand.

This is the truth.

If you want them to listen to it, fine,
but I'm just giving the little warning.

Yeah.

Trigger warning-
Yeah … for the children.

So I'll be reading out of The Voice
again, and Jill's gonna be- Message

in message.

Yep.

So here we go, chapter 13.

"Once again, though, the Israelites
did evil according to the

eternal God," those Israelites.

I mean- And- … they didn't
learn their lessons either … we

do, and we don't either.

"And he gave the Philistines"…

I say Philistines.

You say Philis- Philistines?

I think it, I think it
depends on the context.

Sometimes I say Philistines.

Sometimes I say Philistine.

I'm saying Philistines.

Like, for me, they're the Philistines,
but it's the Philistine arm- or

wait, they're the Philistines.

I can't remember now.

You mean- But like- … if
they're multiple?

Like Philistines.

Well, normally, if it's
the Philistine army.

Oh.

But like- We probably should look
that up, but- And Goliath was a

Philistine, but it was the Philistines.

I'm gonna just say Philistines.

I don't know.

That's weird.

Sorry for mispronouncement.

Listen.

Um- It's probably like potato, potato.

Yeah.

Anyway- Either one … the,
he gave them power.

God gave them power, uh,
Philistines over them for 40 years.

During that time, a man named Zorah
A man of Zorah, sorry, named Manoah

from the tribe of Dan was married to
a wife who could bear him no children.

So the messenger of the Eternal One,
appearing to Manoah's wife, said to her,

"You are barren and have no children,
but all of that is about to change.

You will conceive and have a son.

Be careful that you do not drink
wine or any other spirits, s- which

is a strong drink, and don't eat
anything that is ritually impure."

By the way, I just wanna pause.

Isn't it interesting that today
you still see signs at liquor

stores that say wine and spirits?

Yeah.

Like, what does that tell you?

Right?

I mean, I wanna know if spirits-
Like, why are they called spirits?

Yeah.

I just think that's extremely-
What's attached to it, you know?

Uh, yeah.

Anyway, that's interesting.

Just something for you to
think about on the side.

Mm-hmm.

"And don't eat anything that's
ritually impure, for you are going

to become pregnant and have a son.

Don't ever use a razor on his head
because you will raise this boy as

a Nazirite dedicated to the true God
from his, from his conception, and he

will be the one to begin delivering
Israel from the Philistines."

So you wanna take over and read some?

Yeah.

Okay.

So starting in verse six, it says,
"The woman went to her husband and

said, 'A man of God came to me.

He looked like the angel of
God, terror laced with glory.'"

What a good way to
describe an angel of God.

Yeah.

Terror laced with glory.

I love it.

Yeah.

Anyway, "I did not ask him where he
was from, and he didn't tell me his

name, but he told me, 'You're pregnant.

You're gonna give birth to a son.

Don't drink any wine or beer,
and eat nothing ritually unclean.

The boy will be God's Nazirite from the
moment of birth to the day of his death.'

Manoah prayed to God, 'Master,
let the man of God you sent come

to us again and teach us how to
raise this boy who is to be born.'

God listened to Manoah.

God's angel came again to the woman.

She was sitting in the field.

Her husband Manoah wasn't there with her."

Interesting that he said, "Send
this guy again," and God did,

but he didn't send him to Manoah.

Why?

Sent him to the wife again.

Yeah.

But anyway.

Maybe so they could,
she could introduce him.

Yeah, I guess.

"She jumped up to her feet and
ran and told her husband, 'He's

back, the man- He's back … yeah.

You wanna see him for yourself.

Come out.

"'The man that came to meet me that day.'

Manoah got up, and following
his wife, came to the man.

He said to him, 'Are you the
man who spoke to my wife?'

He said, 'I am.'"

That's what mine says too.

Manoah said, "So when what you
say comes true, what do you have

to s- what do you have to tell
us about this boy and his work?"

The- How unfair is it that we
did not get an angel to tell us

exactly how to raise our children?

Right?

God, why?

I mean- Why?

That would've helped.

A, a handbook or something.

But still- You know … he
still turned out a little wild.

Yeah.

But go ahead.

Uh, there it is right there.

He still turned out a little crazy.

Mm-hmm.

I mean, we're doing a
Jerks of the Bible on him.

And they had literal angelic
proclamation of how to do it Well,

and I think they did it right.

I, I do too.

I think, you know- But that
doesn't always mean They're human.

Yep.

So- It doesn't always mean that kids
listen All that free will and stuff.

Yeah.

Anyway, it says, "The angel of God
said to Manoah, 'Keep ev- keep in

mind everything I told the woman.

Eat nothing that comes from the vine.

Drink no wine or beer.

Eat no ritually unclean foods.

She is to observe
everything I commanded her.'

Manoah said to the angel of God,
'Please stay with us a little longer.

We'll prepare a meal
for you, a young goat.'"

And- Maybe that was
tasty … yeah, I'll take over.

Okay.

And the messenger said, "Even if you try
to detain me, I will not eat your food."

Now if you- Was that because he
was a bad cook- I don't- … or

was that because the- They don't-

angel's like, "Listen- They don't need it
… I eat manna, so I don't need any of this."

Yeah.

Um, he said, "If you prepare a burnt
offering, offer it to The Eternal."

Manoah had not realized yet that he was
speaking to The Eternal's messenger.

That is why he asked The
Eternal's messenger a question.

He said, "What is your name so that we may
honor you when your words become truth?"

And the messenger of The Eternal One
said, "Why do you ask me my name?

It is incomprehensible
beyond human understanding."

That's interesting.

Mm-hmm.

And that reminds me we're all gonna get a
new name- Yeah … when we go to heaven.

So Manoah took the young goat
together with the offering of grain

and sacrificed it on a rock to The
Eternal, to the wonder working God.

While Manoah and his wife watched the
flame going up toward heaven from the

altar, The Eternal's messenger rose
up … Ooh, that's giving me chills.

Um, rose up to heaven in the
flames, and Manoah and his wife

put their faces to the ground.

When he did not reappear,
Manoah realized that they had

seen The Eternal's messenger.

That's when you realized Right?

Like some people- Dude … are
not too quick on the uptake.

And then Manoah said to his wife,
"We are most certainly going to die."

This one says, "We are as good as dead."

For we have seen the true God.

We've looked on God.

Um, Manoah's wife said, "If The
Eternal had desired to kill us…"

Ya moron.

That was my, that was my edit.

I wasn't supposed to do that.

Sorry.

Maybe that's how- Sorry,
guys … Samson got his sass Yeah.

Then he would not have accepted the
grain and burnt offerings from us,

or shown us these wonders, or brought
these announcement at this time.

In due time, the woman did bear
a son, and she named him Samson.

The boy grew.

The Eternal God blessed him,
and the spirit of The Eternal

One began to move in him.

What does that mean?

Ma- Mahanehdan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

This one says the Spirit of God began
working in him while he was staying

at a Danite- Oh, okay … Danite
camp between Zorah and Eshtaol.

All right.

And that's- Eshtaol … 13,
and I liked it.

It was easy to understand.

Yep.

And- Seems pretty straightforward … I
feel like, you know, the

woman understood first.

I mean- Any comment The women
tend to understand first I mean,

I'm s- I'm not a man-hater.

I'm not.

I'm not either.

I love men.

But- They're great … yeah.

For the most part, you know.

Yeah.

I mean, but- But sometimes they're a
little thick on the uptake … it has

been proven that, you know, women,
um, mature faster and- Mm-hmm … you

know, it's been proven, so.

Yeah.

I mean, not always.

Not in every case.

Not always, but- But okay, so- Generally
speaking … you can start out chapter 14.

All right.

Oh man, you're giving me words
to pronounce straight off.

That's why you can start.

Listen, just understand
we're, we're plain people.

I'm just gonna roll with it So you
guys know when, try it I was hooked

on phonics as a child, so- Worked,
worked for me … um, I mean, by that,

I mean, I didn't do the program, but
I think they taught me phonically.

Phonetically.

Phonetically.

Phonically?

So they

didn't.

She didn't listen.

She didn't pay attention.

I did not.

I was like, "I already know how to read.

I don't need this."

Clearly you didn't I've been
reading since I was two.

Not two.

I think it was like
three and a half or four.

I don't know.

I had-- Fun fact, sidebar, um, Al Ballard
taught Jill how to read sitting on the

washer on the hottest cycle possible.

Like, I don't, I don't know why.

It was in the basement,
so maybe it was just cold.

Mm-hmm.

And so he was like, "We're gonna
turn this on the hot cycle."

And so it was hot on the washer, and
I learned how to read on whatever war

book he was re- he was reading a book
that took place in like World War II.

So I went to kindergarten understanding
what hedge hopping was, which

is like planes that come down
right along the tree line- Mm-hmm

and like stay under the radar and
stuff because they're on trees.

Anyway, I was the only one
who knew, and I thought it was

like normal for kids to know.

Like, I was like, "What is this?"

When they gave us like the
little Dick and Jane book.

I was like, "What?"

You were like, "What's this stuff?"

Yeah, 'cause he was like,
"It's, it's important.

You have to understand the context
of what you're reading, Jillian."

So, and so he'd go through all of
what we were actually reading and I'm

like, "I don't, I'm learning letters."

I feel like you didn't have enough
fun in your life as a child.

I would agree.

You need to take a week
and just go have some fun.

I don't know how.

I'm in therapy- Well, I'll teach you.

I'll teach you … trying
to figure it out.

Anyway, chapter 14, Samson went
down to Timnah, Ti- Timnah.

Timnah.

Timnah.

There in Timnah, a woman caught
his eye, a Philistine girl.

He came back and told his father
and mother, "I saw a woman

in Timnah, a Philistine girl.

Get her for me as my wife."

Yeah, this one says, "I beg you, make
the arrangements for her to be my wife."

He just says, "Get her."

Yeah.

Um, his parents said to him, "Isn't
there a woman among the girls in, um,

in the neighborhood of our people?

Do you have to go get a wife from the
uncircumcised Philistine, Philistines?"

Listen, ain't that just like the parents?

Mm-hmm.

Can't you find somebody local- In our
family In our family Favor Southern Um,

can't you find somebody in our town?

Can't you find somebody here?

I got a fourth cousin.

A fourth cousin.

Kerrye, that's not how
all Southerners are.

I mean, fourth isn't b- I had
a crush on my fourth cousin-

Kerrye … for a long, long time.

We're gonna have to edit that out.

Why?

You can't tell people you
had a crush on a cousin.

I just had a crush.

He was cute.

It's cute.

It's fourth cousin I mean- And
now it's, it's probably fourth

cousin five times removed.

I don't know how you would do that.

I mean, I've been try- Someone
tried to teach me, Vicky, and I

still don't understand it All,
yeah, with all of those aprons.

I do not understand it.

Mm-mm.

Anyway.

"But Samson said to his
father, 'Get her for me.

She's the one I want.

She's the right one.'"

Okay.

And then there's like- Samson … I
have like a, an indention here.

Mm-hmm.

Do you have that?

I have- Where it says, "The longer the
Israelites are in Canaan, the more they

find themselves drawn into the beliefs
and practices of those around them."

Mm-hmm.

This is like a little information
about- No, this- … the Israelites.

And it says, "Samson, although he
is a deliverer of his people and

set aside by God, demonstrates
the worst traits of his people.

He actually takes a wife from among
the other people who are trying to

conquer Canaan, the Philistines.

But in all of this, we are told
God is working out a purpose.

Samson has the spirit of God.

Not only does God use imperfect human
beings for His own designs, but God can

use human weakness to achieve His goals.

Samson's weakness, although it
leads to his personal destruction,

becomes God's strength and leads
to great victories for Israel."

Hmm.

He can use the weak people is
what they're trying to say.

Yeah.

Weak in mind.

Yeah.

You know?

Yeah.

So it goes on and it says in parentheses,
like open parentheses, "His father

and mother had no idea that God was
behind this, that He was arranging an

opportunity against the Philistines.

At the time, the Philistines
lorded it over Israel."

So- Yeah … end parentheses.

So this was a plan by God- Yep

for Samson to be- Yeah … like
attracted by this woman.

Okay.

It says, "Samson went down to Tim- Timnah
… Timnah with his father and mother.

When he got to the vineyards of Timnah,
a young lion came at him roaring.

The Spirit of God came on him
powerfully, and he ripped it open

barehanded like tearing a young goat.

But he didn't tell his
parents what he had done."

He, he didn't tell them.

Then he was- It says, "Since he
was by himself when this happened."

Yeah.

So he didn't tell them.

It says, "Then he went o- then he
went on down and spoke to the woman.

In Samson's eyes, she was the one."

Yeah.

"Some days later, when he came back
to get her, he made a little detour

to look at what was left of the lion,
and there, a wonder, a swarm of bees

in the lion's carcass, and honey.

He scooped it up in his hands and
kept going, eating as he went.

He rejoined his father and mother
and gave some to them, and they ate.

But he didn't tell them that he
ate, he had scooped out, scooped out

the honey from the lion's carcass."

So y- did we even go
over the Nazirite rules?

No.

We need to.

Okay.

Because my verse nine says, "Although
he had been set aside as a Nazirite

and was not supposed to touch a corpse-
Yep … he scraped it out and, and

went on eating it from his hands."

So what we talked about yesterday.

Yeah.

The three rules.

The three rules were to eat, eat
or drink nothing from the vine.

So no grapes, no raisins, no- Mm-hmm

anything that grew from a vine.

No grape leaves, no
nothing- Yeah … at all.

Um, no grape juice, no wine.

Nothing.

So nothing from a vine and
then- It's a Nazirite vow.

Right.

Yeah.

Um, and then also you can't
cut your hair at all, ever.

Mm-hmm.

And then you also can't
touch anything dead.

And most-- So like if someone
died in your presence and- Mm-hmm

you had to move them,
you couldn't touch them.

Right.

But-- And then you'd have to go
through this big ritual- Right

… cleansing thing to, to, yeah, start-
Reestablish your, your vow … yes.

But a lot of people
didn't do a lifelong vow.

Correct.

So the Nazirite, Nazar- Nazirite?

Nazirite, I guess.

I guess.

It, it gets confused between
Nazareth and Nazirite.

It's n- it's not spelled the same.

Um, so a Nazirite vow was oftentimes
like a, a period of time for people.

Like they would take a, a Nazirite
vow for a year, two years, whatever.

Um, some people did do lifetime
vows, but it was very rare.

It was unusual.

But the angel of the Lord had
told her, like, he's gonna be a

Nazirite from birth until death.

Yeah.

So he, uh, he- She?

No, I mean, um- Both of them.

Samson.

Oh, you mean-- Okay, Samson.

You're talking about Sam- Samson
was just like- You can believe that.

I mean, I feel like Samson was just kinda
told, like- This is what you're doing

… this is what, this is what you do.

We took this vow for you.

Mm-hmm.

Yep.

So I don't know, was he being
disobedient to the vow or was he

just like-- Like did he think that
that was his vow at that time?

I mean, I'm sure he knew.

I don't know.

He had long hair by that time.

Yeah.

If you're old enough to get married,
your hair has grown quite a bit.

No, I know.

I just meant like…

I don't, I don't know.

Mm-hmm.

Like did he think about the fact
that like, oh, this lion is dead?

He didn't tell his parents for a reason
That's true So, yeah That's true.

So- So … we're on verse 10?

Anyway.

Yes.

"So his father went ahead to the
Philistine woman, and Samson made a

wedding feast with food and drink, as was
the custom for young men being married.

The Philistines of the bridal
party invited 30 men to serve as

companions for Samson at the feast."

Do you have no friends, Samson?

He is a Israelite and he's-
Yeah … marrying a Philistine,

so probably- Oh, yeah.

That's true … they didn't
have any friends there.

Like, did- Since he had not brought any
of his friends, that, that finished.

I just- Oh … I jumped ahead.

Okay.

Okay.

So Samson says to the 30 young
men, "I have a riddle for you.

If you can solve it during the
seven days we eat and drink

here, I will give you each a…"

He was a little, he was a little riddler.

A little riddler.

"I will give each of you a set of
linen garments and a change of clothes.

If you cannot solve it in the seven
days, then you'll give me 30 linen

garments and 30 sets of clothes."

I feel like that just speaks
to kind of his personality.

He was like- 100%

I want to get ahead, I wanna
show these people that I'm smart.

Mm-hmm.

You can't solve my riddle.

Kind of arrogant.

Arrogant jerk.

All I can think of, Solve My Riddles III.

"And the 30 men said, 'Ask away.

What is your riddle?'"

Do you wanna- Yeah … you
wanna say it or you want me to?

"So he said, 'From the
eater came something to eat.

From the strong came something sweet.'

They couldn't figure it out.

After three days they were still stumped.

On the fourth day they said to
Samson's bride, 'Worm out the answer…

Worm the answer out of your
husband or we'll burn you and

your father's house down.'"

I mean, what's a girl to do?

"Have you invited us here to bankrupt us?"

Also, like, this girl may not
even wanted to marry Samson.

He was a hairy beast.

She'd be like, "Sure."

I don't…

It doesn't say anything
about her loving him.

It sure doesn't.

But he did have supernatural strength.

And let's just pause to say here- I'm
sure he was looking good … he probably

didn't, he probably was not muscular.

No, 'cause if he was muscular, then it
would- Describe how- … the strength

would be like, oh, okay, it's expected.

Yeah.

I'm, that's how I picture him anyway.

And I know people…

I don't, we don't know that for sure.

But when you say, if I said, "Jill,
I have supernatural strength," you're

gonna look me up and down and go, "Okay."

Well- "Sure" … what I'm gonna
look you up and down and go, "It

must be supernatural, because what?"

I can't beat anybody in arm wrestle.

But, like, I'm not gonna, I'm not
gonna think that about, like- Uh,

well, Daniel Yeah You know, like
Daniel, um, why can't, I can't…

Why?

Daniel in the lions den?

Goodman.

Oh.

Okay.

I was- I was in the Bible mind

I was thinking of his last name.

It was like right there and I was-
Yeah, he plays one of our- He plays

one of the Roman soldiers in the play.

Yeah And- And he's- He's- He
looks- … giant … yes Like, he is-

He's strong … he is a strong man.

You look at him and, you know, Brandon
on his, on his episode talked about like

farmer strong, like farm boy strong.

Mm-hmm.

Dan is not a farm boy strong.

Like, you know Dan is
strong when you look at him.

Yeah.

He's a, he's an intimidating dude.

Mm-hmm.

Big guy.

Very nice guy.

Yeah, super nice.

I don't think that this was
what Samson was looking like.

No, I don't either.

Now that's my opinion.

I have nothing to back that up with
except for the word supernatural, so…

But also, like, do I think that
Daniel, with as much strength that I

know that that guy has, do I think he
could kill a lion with his bare hands?

Hmm, probably not.

Probably not.

That's why it's supernatural.

That's what I'm saying.

So go ahead with, uh…

They threatened her.

Yeah.

Um, so Samson's bride turned on the
tears, saying to him, "You hate me.

You don't love me.

You-" You don't love me.

"You've told a riddle to my people,
but you won't even tell me the answer."

Mm.

And he said, "I haven't
told my own parents.

Why would I tell you?"

You ain't my bride yet.

Right?

But she turned on the tears all
the seven days of the feast.

She's not even his wife yet.

Nope.

She's like- Well, it does say, in mine it
says- But also she was threatened … I

guess, you know, the wedding- Or maybe
she was- Yeah, Samson's wife- … she

was the wife, it was just the party
… went to him and wept in front of him.

Yeah.

You say you love me, but you don't.

Yeah.

So.

Um, yeah, it does say
bride- Yeah … up there.

Um, but she turned on the
tears, blah, blah, blah.

On the seventh day, worn out
by her nagging, he told her-

That's the way we do it, girls.

Take note.

Yep.

You already know.

Um, it's biblical.

Maybe not the best character
to mold yourself after.

No.

But, mm, anyway, uh, he told
her- It reminds me of, um My

big fat Greek wedding Why?

I'm the neck.

Oh, yeah.

The, the man, he is the head.

The wife, she's the neck.

Anyway, um, he told her, then she
went and told it to her people.

The men of the town came to him on
the seventh day just before sunset

and said, "What is sweeter than honey?

What is stronger than a lion?"

And Samson said…

He already knew.

Hear me out.

He knew.

If you hadn't plowed with my heifer,
you wouldn't have found out my riddle.

What?

That's what it says.

Mine says- Wow.

I know.

That's a rude message.

That's what I'm saying.

If you hadn't gone behind my back
with my wife, you never would have

found the answer to this riddle.

Samson, you- That's why I was like-

jerk … listen, the warning
about the- Yes … don't let

your kids listen, that's why.

You don't call women heifers if
you don't wanna get hurt Mm-mm.

Nope.

Anyway, then it, starting in
19 it says, "Then the Spirit

of God came powerfully on him.

He went down to Ashkelon- That's
where we know the Spirit of

God came powerfully on him.

Yeah.

So he- So he didn't
have this all the time.

No, and he

didn't have the muscles probably.

He was just like a normal guy.

Yeah.

Um, he went down to Ashkelon

and killed 30 of their men, stripped
them, and gave their clothing to

those who had solved the riddle.

That's kind of a jerk thing to do.

It's a super jerk thing to do.

First of all, let me be all arrogant
by coming up with this riddle to

where I can talk about, like, my
crazy good deeds that I did, but,

you know, sneaky sneak about it.

Oh, listen to the last part of this.

Yeah.

Yikes.

It says, "Gave their clothing to
those who had solved the riddle.

Stomping out, smoking with anger,
he went home to his father's house.

Samson's bride became the wife
of the best man at his wedding."

You take her.

Yep.

Well, I mean, she did- He's
like, "Get her out of here."

She did betray him, so.

I mean- And they weren't
even married a minute.

So I think that annulment was
smart thing to do, Samson.

I mean- Probably, yeah … but
also learn your lesson, bro.

Yeah, and he didn't.

He sure didn't.

So in chapter 15 it says, "Later,
during the time of the wheat harvest,

Samson tried to return to his wife"- Oh.

Ew … bringing her, bringing
with him a young goat.

That wins me over every time.

I do love a goat.

I mean, isn't, like, one of the fun
verses in Song of Solomon, like,

your hair is like a flock of goats?

Yeah.

But I do love those videos of
the goats going, you know- Oh my

gosh, yes … the yelling goats.

The screaming goats, and
then also the fainting goats.

And the fainting goats.

The fainting goats are the best ones.

I love that.

I don't know why.

And I just asked Bobby the other
day, I was like, "Can we get a goat?"

And he loves goats, too.

I know.

He's the first person who
ever, like, showed me goat

videos, and he just cackled.

They were playing on, like, do you
remember, this is dating how long

ago this was, but, like, do you
remember the video where it was,

like, the arc of, like, sheet metal?

Mm-hmm.

And they were, like, playing king
of the mountain on- Yeah … on the

thing, but they were, like, bouncing
on top of the thing, and this, this

goat that managed to get up on the top
of it just bounced- Yeah … for ages,

and Bobby just cackled and cackled.

We may have to, like, put some
goat videos in our little comments.

I mean- They're funny … we're gonna
have to find a couple cram ones, too.

Yes.

'Cause the cram ones are the way to go.

The cram ones are so funny.

Yeah.

Ah, cram.

cram.

Um, so anyway, um, Samson said, "I
want to go in and be with my wife,"

but his father-in-law refused.

Well, I mean, she's already
married to somebody else.

What are you doing, Samson?

I mean- And the father-in-law said,
"When you left us, I thought you

didn't want her anymore, so I gave
her to your companion from the feast."

I guess Samson didn't know that.

Yeah.

Uh, anyway, "Her younger sister
is much prettier than she is.

Why don't you take her instead?"

I mean- This time-

these poor girls.

And Samson says, "This time no one will
blame me when I hurt the Philistine."

He was mad.

So he went and caught 300 foxes.

This is what Smarty was
talking about the other day.

This is what Smarty was like…

Listen, if you guys haven't gone and
listened to the, the kids episode with

Dewey and Smarty- It was funny, yeah

this was Smarty's favorite Bible chara-
Bible s- Bible story … story, yeah.

Yep.

Tying them tail to tail, he put a
torch between each pair of tails

so that- I can't get through it
without laughing That's so mean.

It is so mean.

It's so sad.

It's like, why are you
hurting the animals?

Yeah, like what did the foxes do?

What did they do?

So when they were lit, the
foxes ran into the fields of the

Philistines and burned everything up.

The grain standing in the fields
burned, as well as the grain had

been gathered up along with…

As well as…

Did I say that?

As the grain that had been
gathered up along with the

olive groves and the vineyards.

And Sam- and the Philistines, seeing
the disaster, said, "Who did this?"

Who did it?

Like you don't know.

Anyway, the other Philistines that
knew said, "Samson, the son-in-law of

the man from Timnah," because he gave
Samson's wife away to his best man.

So the Philistines went and set their
house afire- Oh … and Samson's wife

and her father were burned alive.

Look what you did, Samson.

Look what you did.

I mean- But that's mean
of the Philistines.

Like they- Well, the Philistines
started it- Yeah … kind of.

Well, Samson started it, but
then they, they egged it on.

Like Samson came with
this ridiculous riddle.

Like he's- … you know, a troll
under the drawbridge or something.

Riddle me this.

Exactly.

Um, and then- Like what's that one?

Rumpelstiltskin.

That's what I'm saying.

Like answer my riddles three.

Um, but then they were like, "We're
gonna kill you and your family if

you don't figure this out for us."

And so she figures it out, tells
them- They are mean … and

she's like, "I don't want it."

They're jerks, too.

They are.

They're bigger jerks.

Listen, I don't even think jerk
is an appropriate word for them.

No, it needs to be something worse, but
we can't say that- Yeah … on a podcast.

I mean…

No, we can't.

That's not our rules.

Okay, fine.

Yeah.

So you- I'm just, I'm gonna wor- I'm
gonna think about a word that is worse

than jerk but is still not explicit.

Yeah.

'Cause there has to be one.

Mm-hmm.

All right, so Samson said,
"Is this how it's gonna be?

Then I won't stop until I have
taken great revenge on you."

So he fought them mercilessly
and killed many of them.

And then he went and hid out in
a cave near the rock of Elim.

A company of Philistines went
up and camped in Judah where

they made a raid against Lehi.

And the men of Judah to the company of
Philistines, "Why are you doing this?"

I guess they didn't know.

And Philistine said, "We've come to
capture Samson to make him suffer

the way he has made us suffer."

Then 3,000 men of Judah
went to the rock of Etam.

Did I say Elim?

It's Etam.

I don't know.

They get- Okay … Etam to talk…

Maybe I did.

Yeah, I did say Elim.

It's Etam to talk to Samson, and the men
of Judah said to Samson, "Are you crazy?

Those Philistines are our masters.

They have the upper hand.

Don't you know what you're doing to us?"

Samson said, "I'm only paying them
back for what they've done to me."

The men of Judah said, "We've
come to capture you and take

you to the Philistines."

And Samson said, "Will you swear
not to kill me yourselves?"

And the men of Judah said, "We will
agree not to kill you, but we will

tie you up and hand you over to them."

Do you wanna take it?

Mm-hmm.

It says, "We promise," they said, "we
will tie you up and surrender you to

them, but believe us, we won't kill you."

They proceeded to tie him up with new
ropes and led him away from the rock.

You'll, you'll find that new ropes
phrase again at the end of this.

Mm.

So go ahead.

As he approached…

You're a meanie.

Etam.

Etam, E-T-A-M.

This one d- says Lehi.

Oh, sorry.

I was at the wrong verse.

Yeah.

I was like, "Mm."

As they approached.

I said Lehi, but- Is it Lehi or Lei?

I don't know what it is, but this is why
I called you a meanie- … 'cause I'm

like, "Here's this word", and y- um, yeah.

You wanna take it?

And there's a weirdo word.

As he approached Lehi, the Philistines
came to meet him, shouting in triumph,

and the spirit of God came upon
him- Here it goes … great power.

The ropes on his arms fell
apart like flax on fire.

The strips of leather
slipped off of his hands.

He spotted a fresh donkey jawbone,
reached down and grabbed it- Did

you just have the picture of the
Hu- like- 'Cause he was normal.

What if that- Like, like he was the Hulk?

What if that happened, like
he changed in appearance?

Like . Yeah.

That's even better.

Maybe.

Um- By the way, Hulk is my favorite-
I know … um, Marvel character.

Marvel character.

I'm scared to death of him, but,
uh, you know I like the power.

Yeah, you do.

I do like the power.

You do.

Um, he spotted a fresh donkey jawbone,
reached down and grabbed it, and

with it killed the whole company.

And Samson said, "With a donkey's
jawbone I made heaps of donkeys of them.

With a donkey's jawbone I
killed an entire company."

1,000 men is what my version says.

Yeah.

So that's a lot.

Yeah.

Pause.

We need to talk for a second so all right.

Okay.

Back to the Bible.

Yeah.

Uh, we left at he killed
a thousand Philistines.

Yep.

And then there's a little song.

What?

And I just asked one of my friends
if he could put this to music.

What?

There's a song.

It says Samson, in parentheses,
singing, in this verse 16.

Oh.

He's singing.

Mine said, mine does not say he's singing.

Singing.

With the jawbone of a donkey,
I have piled them high.

With the jawbone of a donkey,
I have killed thir- 1,000 men.

I'm sure in his language it rhymed.

May- maybe.

Maybe.

And then it says- Listen … when
he finished- Songs don't have to

rhyme … when, in 17, verse 17,
when he finished his triumphant song.

Does that not say in- I mean, it
says when he finished speaking,

he threw away the jawbone.

No, it says triumphant song.

We need to look at a different- We
do need to look at a different thing.

Let's- I'm gonna look it up in a different
version and you keep- Okay … reading

and I'm gonna see if that- 'Cause-
Like, the NLT says singing there.

Go ahead.

'Cause in, in this, when it doesn't
say singing, it makes me feel like

he was taunting- This one says-

which could be singing … when
he finished his boasting.

Yeah.

But, you know, it could've been
like a, he's- It could've been

like a- … he's a riddle man.

It could have been a little- He could
give a little- … like, sing-song, hey,

hey … how we- Like a neener-neener.

Yeah.

Like, that's what I get,
like, neener-neener.

Oh, yeah.

Anyway.

Um, let me see what it says in the NET.

And then look up King
James or New King James.

Oh, geez.

Yeah, this one says when he
finished speaking, but I really

like the thought of him singing.

All right.

Let me see, um, New King James.

Um, uh, we're still in 14, right?

Why'd it switch me to 15?

It's seven- it's 15:17
is what I'm asking about.

Okay, 15:17.

Let me go to, like, the Hebrew version

It's so fun to look at
all the versions It is.

Okay, um, it says in the New King
James Version, it says, "Then Samson

said, 'With the jawbone of a donkey,
heaps upon heaps, with the jawbone of

a donkey I have slain a thousand men.'

And so it was when he had
finished speaking, that he threw

the jawbone from his hand."

I still don't think singing.

I like the think- thought of singing.

But maybe he was just like,
like you said, taunting.

Yeah.

Orthodox Jewish Bible.

What does that say?

Um- Girl, I don't know, but
that sounds great … 17 says,

"And it came to pass when he had
main- made an end of speaking."

So I guess it's- So only- And it says-

one version thus far
says that it's a song.

Yeah, yeah.

I'm still gonna ask him
to make it into a song.

Okay.

Who, who did you ask?

Cary I asked Becky.

I didn't text him-
Okay … 'cause I don't text.

You don't text the boys.

I don't, I don't text the boys.

I just text their wives.

Yep.

Okay.

'Cause that's appropriate.

So it says, "When he finished
speaking, he threw away the jawbone.

He named that place Ramath-
Ramath Lehi, Jawbone Hill."

The high place of the jawbone.

Yep.

Now he was suddenly very thirsty.

Like, he was suddenly so…

Like, my goodness, I've done all
this- You know when- … killing.

I'm super parched … you know
when the Hulk goes back to Bruce

and he's like, "" "What did I do?"

He's like, "Man, am I dehydrated.

I need some electrolytes."

Yeah.

So now he was suddenly very thirsty.

He called out to God, "You have given
your servant this great victory.

Are you going to abandon me to
die of thirst and fall into the

hands of the uncircumcised?"

That's kinda-- You don't
talk to God- I mean-

like that.

Like, ugh.

So, so God- God says, um, you've
given me this great victory in my

hands, but am I going to die of
thirst now and fall into the hands?

Yeah, that's what- I mean, okay,
to be fair- We don't know the

tone … I'm reading this- We don't
know the tone … I'm reading this

with him being a jerk in mind.

Yeah.

So maybe this is why tone is so important.

You have to read it back.

Mm-hmm.

So maybe it was, "You've given
your servant this great victory.

Are you gonna abandon me to fall
or to die of thirst and fall into

the hands of the uncircumcised?"

Still kind of sounds like a jerk.

It still is kind of, but- Let's
see what- We can't trust yours-

real quick … because they
said that he was singing.

No, I'm gonna, I'm gonna see, yeah.

I'm gonna see what, um, King James,
let's go with- All right, yeah, let's

see what- … that version … what
good old King James has to say.

I'm not good enough with the Scottish
Gaelic yet to translate, but also I don't

think that the Scottish Gaelic is, I don't
think that I have it in Old Testament.

I think it's only New.

You ready?

Go for it.

"And he was sore athirst."

Sore athirst.

That's what it says.

All right.

"And called on-" I'm never
calling it parched again.

It's gonna be sore athirst.

I'm sore athirst, yeah.

I need a Sonic, "And called on the
Lord and said, 'Thou hast given this

great deliverance into the hand of thy
servant, and now shall I die for thirst.'"

And this sounds a little drama king,
"And fall into the hand- I mean, I

feel like- … of the uncircumcised."

I feel like that tracks 100%.

He's a drama king.

Yeah.

All right.

So- But it sounds British,
so that's why too.

Yeah.

Go ahead.

'Cause the Brits are drama kings?

I mean- I mean, their king is dramatic.

Yeah.

Anyway.

What?

No hate, King Charles.

Whatevs.

Okay.

So God split open the rock basin in Lehi.

Water gushed out and Samson drank.

His spirit revived.

He was alive again.

That's why it's called En Hakore.

En Hakore?

How do you say it?

Hakore?

Mine says En Hakor.

How do you spell Hakor?

H-A-K-K-O-R-E.

Okay.

I'm, I'm like- En Hakore

why do I look at it and think it's Hakore?

It may be.

Maybe.

You're probably closer.

Uh, maybe I'm just
trying to look at Gaelic.

I don't know.

Yeah.

Callers Spring, like that's what it's
supposed to be called, Callers Spring.

It's still there at Lehi today.

Let's go.

Samson judged Israel for 20 years
in the days of the Philistines.

Okay And that's what it says.

Now we're going to chapter 16.

Does this go through 16 or 17?

I think i- you said 16.

I wrote down 16.

Yeah, yeah.

I wrote 13 through 16.

Yes, it is.

Okay.

So this is the last chapter.

And he still hasn't learned.

No, and he won't.

Uh, well, he will.

Okay, so when Samson went to Gaza,
he saw a prostitute there who pleased

him, so he went in to be with her.

Word went out…

We'll just, just go, keep going.

All right.

Word went out to the men of Gaza that
Samson had arrived, so they surrounded

his house, the house, and waited quietly
for him in the city gate, thinking, "When

morning comes, we will strike him down."

But Samson fooled the men of Gaza.

He stayed with the prostitute
only until midnight.

Then he rose from the bed, took hold
of the closed city gates and pulled

them, still barred, and the post
that held them out of the ground.

I mean, this guy was strong.

Then he hoisted them onto his
shoulders and carried them up

the hill in front of Hebron.

After this, he fell in love with Delilah.

I mean, that's all it said I mean,
why doesn't it say more about that?

About him sleeping with a prostitute?

No.

Oh.

About pulling those gates out- I was
like, Kerrye- … and just taking them

to the hill … what do you want to know?

What, what did he do with them there?

Um, I mean, I think that was
just his way to get away.

Like, he shielded himself and-
Oh, okay … you know what I mean?

Like- After he fell in love with
Delilah, a woman from the-- After

this, he fell in love with a Delilah,
a woman from the Valley of Sorek.

The rulers of the Philistines
came to her with a plan.

Does yours give a definition
of what Sorek means?

Nope.

Mine's has in parentheses, grapes.

So like- … she is a
woman from the grapes.

That should've been a sign- The
Valley of the Grapes … Samson.

Exactly.

That's what I feel like.

What are you doing?

You're not supposed to have
anything to do with grapes.

And she's a woman- And
he's- … from the Valley of Grapes.

Goodness.

I mean

My gosh.

Make sure that's true,
'cause it is the message.

Go look it up.

It's in the message.

You know the message is.

Hold on.

Let's, let's see.

What does Sorek…

How, how do I…

What?

Just ask.

Anyway.

Am I asking Angus?

I don't know.

If you can charm him, this Philistine
says to her, "If you can charm him

into giving you the secret of his
great strength so that we can overpower

and capture him, each of us will
give you 1,100 pieces of silver."

That's a bunch.

Let's find out how much that's worth.

I'll let you do that while
I'm looking up Sorek.

Yeah, and we will-- Let's edit out
all this looking up, so we look-

Okay … so we look smarter than we are.

Sorek is generally translated as, it,
it's Hebrew, is generally translated as

choice vine, noble vine, or simply vine.

So even if it doesn't mean grapes,
it means vine, which he wasn't

supposed to have anything to
do with anything on the vines.

Mm-mm.

Nothing of the vine- Can't understand it
… and she's from the valley of the vine.

Wow.

I mean, Samson.

Talk about- What are you doing?

… God spelling it out for you.

Don't- And he just didn't listen

go there, Samson.

Um, okay, so 1,100 pieces of s-
silver, um, roughly 36 years of

wages for a regular worker or about
28 to 35 pounds of silver by weight.

That's a lot of money, and
they were promising her.

Mm-hmm.

1,100 each, and there were how many?

Three Does it say?

Um, the Philistine tyrants approached her.

Mine doesn't say how many.

Okay.

Seduce him- I like that better
… discover what's behind his great strength

and how we can tie him up and humble him.

1,100 pieces of silver could
roughly buy- It says- … 36

servants … each man's company
will give you 100 shekels of silver.

So each man's company, if a company is
1,000 men, you get the math earlier.

Okay, there were five Philistine lords.

Okay, so- Totaling 5,500 pieces,
so that's how much she got.

She would have been, I feel
like, in our day- A billionaire?

Um…

I don't know.

It seems like a lot, yeah.

A lot or a millionaire.

Yeah.

It says in several million dollars.

Psh.

Girl, that would've
been hard to turn down.

I mean, also, did she like
him or did he just decide?

Um, I think- Like, he fell in love with
her- Yeah … but did she like him?

I don't know.

Delilah, I don't know where you are, but-
I don't know … we'll find out one day.

Anyway.

Be like, "Hey, is Delilah up here?"

So sh- of course, she agreed.

She didn't make it.

On one of their visits,
she questioned him.

So he came to see her regularly, and she
said to him, "What makes you so strong?"

She said, "Tell me, dear, the secret
of your great strength and how

you can be tied up and humbled."

And he said, "If you were to bind me
with seven fresh bowstrings that have

not dried yet- Ugh … I would be weak
and no different from any other man."

So he is basically saying to her
something he's already conquered, which

of course he can, but he's- But like-
Yeah … liar, liar, pants on fire.

Then in, like, a little, you know,
block where it's not part of the

word, it seems as though Samson is
toying with Delilah in his answer.

Uh, yeah.

You think?

So- Which it makes, it begs
you a question, like, why are

you bothering to toy with her?

Like, do you know what she's up to or
are you just like, "I'm gonna show off.

She's gonna tie me up and I'm
gonna bust out of it and ha ha"?

Maybe.

I don't know, like- I don't think he knew.

Do you?

No.

That the Philistines
were gonna be waiting?

Well, no, I don't think that he
knew the Philistines were gonna be

waiting, but- Okay, so they brought
Delilah seven fresh bowst- bowstrings

as- This time he didn't anyway

as Samson slept she bound him with him.

Like, how heavy of a sleeper
are you to not feel someone?

Listen, I don't know because, like, there
are definite times where I'm like, Ben's

out cold, and then I can, like, put my
hand on his shoulder and he, like, wakes

like he's headed to battle that moment.

Yeah.

It's the craziest thing.

"So she bound him with them, and
when the warriors had taken their

places in the inner chamber, Delilah
called out to him, 'Wake up, Samson.

The Philistines are attacking.'

But he snapped the bowstrings the way
a thread snaps when it is touched by

a flame and fended off the attackers."

So he actually saw them.

This wasn't just something-
Mm-hmm … that- Exactly.

It wasn't like she was- Should've
learned his lesson right then.

Exactly.

"So the secret of his
strength remained hidden."

Did he leave because she said that
to him and there were attackers?

No.

What's wrong with you?

I- This point, I'm like, "How
are you-" Are you special?

Are you drunk?

I don't even know if we should put
that in there, but like- I'm…

Like, well, was he
intoxicated with something?

I don't know.

Like, who knows?

We may not wanna put that in there-
Or was he just a complete- … for

real … bonehead moron?

Like, here's the thing.

I'm just like, what are you doing?

It, it…

I can't really fault him for
the initial like, "Uh, you can

tie me up with, you know- Mm-hmm

little vines," what- whatever it is,
like animal tendon, carcass, whatever.

Blah.

Which also, if you think about
it, Kerrye, he's not supposed to

touch anything dead, and these were
undried animal tendon bowstrings.

Where do animal tendon- What
is an ani- animal tendon?

The bowstrings are made out of animal

tendons.

The k- My version in verse seven- Okay
… says, "Samson told her if they were to tie

me up with seven bowstrings, the kind made
from fresh- Let's- … animal tendons-

… make sure … not dried out, then I
would become weak just like anyone else."

Did you already make sure that, like, were
the bowstrings Samson were tied with…

Hang on.

Will it have been- She--
We're fact checking.

I mean- Samson tied
with- But it makes sense.

Like, he doesn't seem to give any kind
of care at all about his Nazirite vow.

I don't think that he considered
himself a Nazirite vow

He was sewn made from wet animal

Okay.

See So I did a fact check.

We'll start here.

Okay.

I did a fact check real quick.

That is true.

Yeah.

They were made out of wet
animal tendons or go- he is not

supposed to touch anything dead.

So here's the other question then.

Uh, this is getting ahead of the
story a little bit, but like when

he does tell her like, "Okay,
yeah, if you cut my hair," right?

Like he, he's given the Nazirite vo-
like he's taken this Nazirite vow.

He's broken don't touch the dead thing.

He's broken the, um, don't have anything
to do with anything with, from the vine

'cause hello, Delilah, you from the vine.

And like- From there.

And now he's like, "Okay, cut my hair."

It- does he just think that since
he was still able to do these

supernatural things- Because
he touched the dead thing, yeah

despite the thing.

Exactly, that he was just gonna
be fine but- I think his hair is

specifically tied to the strength.

Did I miss that part where
we talked about that?

Like in the Bible?

Yeah.

Or did it say that?

I think.

I don't know.

Let's go back.

Okay, so we did some little research
and, um, it doesn't say that his

strength is connected just to his
hair, but when he broke these vows,

maybe in succession that day, and
God was just like, "Okay, I'm out."

Yeah.

"You don't care about your
vow that you made to me."

Yeah.

So.

Well, what did the, what did
the messenger say again to…

Let me go back to 13.

Okay.

Because the messenger said, "La,
la, la, for her, drink no wine

or beer, eat nothing ritually
unclean," blah, blah, blah.

"No razor will touch his head.

The boy will be God's Nazirite
from the moment of his birth."

So the, the messenger, the angel,
told her not to eat anything unclean.

Mm-hmm.

Not to- 'Cause that would
go straight into him.

Right, 'cause it would,
it would go into him.

But the specific thing was,
"No razor will touch his head.

The boy will be God's Nazirite
from the moment of his birth."

So no razor will touch his head.

Um- And she taught him this.

Right.

He knew this and, you know, he obviously
saw the power of God in his life.

But also the, the word says, "The boy
will be God's Nazirite from the moment

of birth to the day of his death."

Mm-hmm.

So when the razor touched his head and
he wasn't, he didn't have the long hair

anymore, he's no longer a Nazirite.

Mm-hmm.

So he dead.

Yeah.

So maybe that's just it.

Yeah.

Okay.

So you can start with, um-
Let me go back to- Verse 10.

Hold on.

Let me get back to Judges.

Here's the- 16.

Okay.

Start with verse 10, and this is
where we bring in the new ropes again.

Again.

Go ahead.

Delilah said, "Come now, Samson.

You're playing with me, making up stories.

Be serious.

Tell me how you can be tied up."

And he said- All I'm saying is
this right here is where I'm like,

"Bro, what is wrong with you?"

There's something's up.

Like, are you…

This is where I'm like,
what was wrong with you?

Just were you so arrogant or
like, I just, I don't understand.

This is questions, you know, how
Shannon said- On the other- … I'm,

there'll be a line for everybody.

Yes.

This is when we s- get to
Samson's little line- I feel like-

like at teacher conferences
and we're waiting on a teacher.

I, I got a question.

Who was- I'm not trying
to be a smart aleck.

Uh, um, to be fair, I guess, on the other
side of that coin is did he trust the vow

so much that he's like, "Nah, it doesn't
matter what-" But he's breaking it.

Right.

He's already broken it.

Two times.

Yeah.

And here's the thing, multiple
times in just two sections

of the vow has he broken.

Mm-hmm.

So this is like if you're on the Daniel
fast and you're like, "You know what?

I'm gonna eat butter."

And you just start eating butter again.

Butter?

Oh, yeah, 'cause it's dairy.

It's dairy.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And then you're like, "You know what?

Chicken's all right."

You're not on the fast.

You're not on the chicken fast anymore.

That's right.

You know?

You're off of it.

And then you're like, "You know what?

I'm just going with, I'm just gonna
eat a steak and it's gonna be fine."

Or like sea- crab, 'cause like
definitely Daniel wouldn't eat crab.

But like- Mm-hmm

come on now, like at- Yeah … you know,
at some point you look at it and you

go, you're just not on the fast anymore.

You're just not on it.

Like, you just, just own it.

Like- You've made a decision here.

Right.

And he, she must have been one
beautiful woman because his

weakness is definitely women.

Pff.

100%.

Not godly women.

Yeah.

This, this man enjoyed
the female populace.

Yes.

Yep.

So he said, "If you were to bind me
with new ropes," there's that word,

that phrase- Yep … "that have
never been used," and on and on then.

You, I would be heavily- Then I would be
helpless just like everybody else … so

she said using new ropes Delilah bound
or- So Delilah got some new ropes

and tied him up and she said- Yep

"The Philistines are on you, Samson."

And the men were hidden in the next room.

He snapped the ropes from
his arms like threads.

Yep.

So the, the men were hidden.

So the secret of his- But
the- … strength remained hidden.

And so the second time- The men
were hidden … second time.

But like they were hidden this time.

No, they were hidden last time.

Okay, so he doesn't know they're there.

He just knows she tried to tie
him up, but the men were hidden.

The first time though,
they, he, he saw them.

He saw them in attack?

Yeah.

Remember it says, that's why I was
like you should have left then.

So like where it says, it's in verse…

Well, yeah, we'll s- edit that out.

Yes, back up in verse, uh, six.

In verse- Nine, sorry … nine.

Um- It says, "The men were
waiting in ambush in her room.

Then she said, 'The
Philistines are on you.'

He snapped the cords as
though they were mere threads.

The secret of his strength
was still a secret."

It- mine's-- Let's look it up in a
different version, because mine says,

um, "And fended off his attackers."

All I'm saying is yours also said he
was singing, and not a single- And

let's look … other version said.

Let's look.

All right.

Another one.

Let me, let me pull up- Verse
number nine … New King James.

Verse number nine.

No, not nine Yeah.

Now men were lying in wait, staying with
her in the room, and she said to him,

"The Philistines are upon you, Samson."

But he broke the bowstrings as a strand of
yards- yarn breaks when it touches fire.

So the secret of his
strength was not known.

It does not say he- I didn't like- Maybe,
maybe yours is saying that he fended off

his attackers by- Ew … them realizing,
like, he's not actually- Yeah … weak.

Maybe we should edit
that part out up there.

Yeah, we'll see.

Yeah.

We'll see how it rolls.

Anyway, okay, the voice- Okay … we
might not use anymore because it's

not agreeing with other- I mean, it
is offering plenty of commentary.

Yeah.

But- So, um, anyway … it's just
wasn't super clear 'cause fending off

his attack, I mean, like- Like he's-
… technically he did fend him off He did.

He stopped them- Because- He might
not have seen them … but right.

So that- If he did see them,
he's a really- If he did see

them- Like- … he's a bonehead.

That's, uh, that'll be another question.

This is where we pause.

If he didn't see them, then
it makes a little more sense.

Yeah.

Even though, like, you gotta, you
gotta wonder, like, did he, did he ask

her, like, "Hey, psst, why, why are
you, what, what are you doing here?"

Mm-hmm.

"Why are you trying to, why are
you trying to get me all weak?"

Yeah.

So she- Like, I just know if I s- listen,
if I was like, okay, flip it, right?

I have a coconut allergy, and if Ben
were constantly like, "Hey- … what

is it that you're allergic to again?"

And I'm like, you know, "Oh,
I'm allergic to asparagus."

And he's like, "Oh, okay, here, try this.

It's got asparagus in it."

I'm gonna be like, "Why
are you trying to…

Like, I told you I was
allergic to asparagus.

What are you doing?"

And then, um, she's like, "Oh, what
are you, what are you allergic to?"

"Oh, I'm allergic to, you know, peanuts."

"Okay, here, have this.

Oh, I made it with peanut butter."

What?

Like, at some point I would be like,
"Ben, I told you I was allergic."

Like, I mean, I'm not allergic,
but I told you I was, and

then you put the stuff in it.

Clear- this is on purpose.

Like, what are you playing at here?

What is the matter with you?

I'm- I would not at that point be
like, you know, a third time, "No,

but really what are you allergic to?"

I would not be like, "It's coconut,
the actual thing that'll kill me."

You know what I mean?

Like, I don't understand.

Mm-mm.

I don't understand h- the illogic-
I don't think he was- … of

this … in his right mind, for real.

I mean, he couldn't- So … have been.

He couldn't have been.

Anyway, okay.

Okay.

So in number 10.

Where are we even at?

I got a- In 10, Delilah said
to Samson, "See, you have

fooled me and told me lies."

Okay.

"Now tell me, I beg you,
how can you be tied?

How y- can you be tied?"

Verse 10 in 16?

Yeah.

We just did that one.

Okay.

Okay.

So Samson said to her, "They must…"

They.

See, he says they.

And I went to a different version.

I went to New Life version.

Hold on.

New Life, yeah.

New Life?

She got new ropes, blah, blah, blah.

Got New Life version.

Okay.

Mine's in verse 13.

It says, "Delilah said to Samson,
'You're still playing games

with me, teasing me with lies.

Tell me how you can be tied up.'

He said to her, 'If you wove the
second- the seven braids of my

hair into the fabric on the loom
and drew it tight, then I would be

as helpless as any other mortal.'

When she had him fast asleep,
Delilah took the seven braids of his

hair and wove them into the fabric
on the loom and drew it tight.

Then she said, 'The Philistines
are on you, Samson.'

He woke up from his sleep and ripped
the loose, ripped loose the…"

I can't.

"Ripped loose from both
the loom and the fabric.

She said, 'How can you say I love
you when you won't even trust me?

Three times now you've toyed with
me like a cat with a mouse.'"

Girl, you have some nerve
talking about a cat and a mouse.

But anyway, um, "Like a cat with
a mouse refusing to tell me the

secret of your great strength."

She kept at it day after day.

So this took a long time.

Mm-hmm.

Um, and- Nagging and tormenting him.

So, like, this wasn't
just a one-night thing.

No.

This was…

'Cause he, it did mention above, like,
he went, he came to see her a lot.

Mm-hmm.

So, and we're in 17.

Finally.

Yep.

Oh, 'cause mine says she torn-
tormented him day after day- Mm-hmm

… until he was sick to death of it.

And now I'm in the New Living Translation.

Yeah.

"Finally, Samson shared a secret.

'My hair has never been cut,' he
confessed, 'for I was dedicated

to God as a Nazirite from birth.

If my head were shaved, my strength
would leave me, and I would

become as weak as anyone else.'"

So, you know, honestly, this is the first
time he brought God into it as well.

Yeah.

Like, he-

He didn't at any point, like if he was
talking about the bow strings, if he

was like, "Oh, I need, you know, if it-
they're the fresh ones 'cause, you know,

I've been promised to God and I'm not
supposed to touch anything on, you know,

that's been dead," blah, blah, blah.

Like maybe that would've been the one.

But this is the time when he was
like, "Listen, it's all about God."

And she's like, "Okay, let
me, let me separate what's,

what connects you to God."

Yeah.

Yeah.

Hmm.

So Delilah realized he had
finally told her the truth.

What does yours say on 18?

Uh, when Delilah realized that
he had told her his secret, she

sent for the Philistine tyrants
telling them, "Come quickly.

This time he's told me the truth."

And- I wonder how she knew he…

Guess 'cause he brought God up.

Probably because he brought God up.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So the Philistines were, were- stines
returned with the money in their hands.

So they believed it was
finally the truth as well.

Yep.

Probably 'cause he brought up God.

Um, Delilah lulled Samson to sleep.

Oh, that reminds me of- Ooh,
yep, of rocking him to sleep.

Rocking him to sleep.

I bet she put his little head
in her lap and played with

his hair till he fell asleep.

That's what I'm doing right
now, playing with my hair.

Doing this.

Um- Listen, that's how I go to
sleep … with his head in her lap.

Yep.

And then she called in a man to
shave off the seven locks, off

the seven locks of his hair.

In the way she began, in this
way she began to bring him

down and his strength left him.

So seven locks.

Mm-hmm.

Do you think he had dreadlocks?

I don't know if I'd call them
dreadlocks, but it says seven braids.

Oh, okay.

I mean, locks are different than braids.

That's true.

But the, you still call it a lock of hair.

You know, like- Yeah … any chunk
of hair can be referred to as a lock.

Like a, a lock of hair is
different than a dreadlock.

Yeah.

And this is the saddest verse
I think of this whole story.

Then she cried out, "Samson, the
Philistines have come to capture you."

When he woke up, he thought, "I will do
as before and shake myself free", but

he didn't realize the Lord had left him.

Yeah.

That's sad.

What does yours say?

He didn't realize that
God had abandoned him.

Wow.

That's really sad.

So the Philistines captured
him and gouged out his eyes.

What'd they say about on yours?

The Philistines grabbed him, gouged out
his eyes, and took him down to Gaza.

They shackled him in iron, irons and put
him to the work of grinding in the prison.

But his hair, though cut
off, began to grow again.

So Y'all better so look out.

Yeah.

So Samson's final victory is
how mine starts out in verse 23.

Mm-hmm.

It says, "The Philistine tyrants
got together to offer a great

sacrifice to their god, Dagon."

There's the Dagon again.

There he is again.

"They celebrated saying, 'Our god
has given us Samson, our enemy.'

And when the people saw him, they
joined in cheering their god.

'god has given us-- given our enemy to
us, the one who ravaged our country,

piling high the corpses among us.'

Then- Half drunk by now,
is how mine starts on 25.

This one says- "The people demanded,
'Bring out Samson so he can amuse us.'"

This one says, "Then this,
everyone was feeling high and

someone said, 'Get Samson.

Let him show us his stuff.'"

So- They got Samson from prison
and he put on a show for them.

Yeah.

So Samson- I love it … said to the
young servant who was leading him

by the hand, "Place my hands against
the pillars that hold up the temple.

I want to rest against them."

I always felt bad for this servant.

Yeah.

When I was a little kid, I
remember feeling bad for him.

Mm-hmm.

'Cause I knew- 'Cause he didn't know.

He didn't know and I knew how this ended.

Yeah.

Go ahead.

Um, "Put me where I can touch the
pillars that hold up the temple

so I can rest against them.

The building was packed with men and
women, including all the Philistine

tyrants, and there were at least 3,000 in
the stands watching Samson's performance.

And Samson cried out to God, 'Master
God, oh please look on me again.

Oh please give me strength yet once more.

God, with one avenging blow,
let me be avenged on the

Philistines for my two eyes.'

Then Samson reached out to the two central
pillars that held up the building and

pushed against them, one with his right
arm, the other with his left, saying,

'Let me die with the Philistines.'

Samson pushed hard with all his might.

The building crashed on the
tyrants and all the people in it.

He killed more people in his death
than he had killed in his life.

His brothers and all his relatives
went down to get his body.

They carried him back and buried
him in the tomb of Manoah, his

father, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

He judged Israel for 20 years."

Sad.

Yep.

It's a sad ending, but
we know he be in heaven.

He be in heaven, I think.

Because we know when Jesus came back,
he went down and preached to them.

Yep.

Who can resist him?

I…

Right.

Nobody.

So yeah, that's a, that's why we
think he's a jerk, but he did- I mean-

… redeem himself in a way that- He did

Jonah didn't, but- In a way
that we don't know if Jonah did.

Yeah, we don't know.

I mean, obviously Jonah probably did, but,
um, but, you know, I, I just thought he

had jerk tendencies, let's just say that.

I mean, he definitely
had unlikable qualities.

Yeah.

We'll call it that.

Yeah.

Maybe he, maybe he doesn't quite fit jerk.

He definitely fits bonehead.

And he fits unlikable qualities.

Yeah.

Like he was boastful, arrogant.

Um, womanizer or something.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Which is interesting because, like,
on the one hand, I'm like, he, he

couldn't have been anything to look at.

Mm-mm.

You know?

But on the other hand, he had to have been
something 'cause he got all these women.

Maybe that was why women
liked the long hair.

Long-haired, scrawny, scrawnies-
… because the Philistines were also-

He probably just looked- … big
and bulky … normal.

No, I mean, not scrawny.

I mean…

I think it would've mentioned
this was a scrawny little kid.

Maybe.

And maybe he, I don't know.

Maybe he changed.

Maybe he was buff, he
just didn't look buff.

Maybe he changed in appearance.

I don't know.

That's getting kind of…

I don't wanna add anything, but I just
don't think that he was anything like

people were like, "Oh, don't mess with
him-" Yeah … because he looked strong.

Yeah.

I don't think that.

I mean, but also he did enough
stuff that he garnered a reputation.

Yeah.

So, like…

I just think that he, yeah, he
just had, people knew about him.

Mm-hmm.

But that was a good story.

One that I want to tell
my family and friends.

I'm kidding.

Anyway, warn everybody.

Listen- If you're gonna walk away
from this, first, first lesson, if

God tells you, like, "This is the
thing that connects me to you,"

don't, don't mess around with that.

Yeah.

Like, that's a serious thing.

Mm-hmm.

Um, lesson number two,
people show you who they are.

Mm-hmm.

It is our job to believe them-
The first time … when they do.

Yep.

And if you can, get away.

Yeah.

But- Like- Yeah, that's good
… people show you who they are.

Yep.

Yep.

All right.

All right.

It was fun.

All right.

Till our next jerk episode.

How many more jerks are
we gonna do, do you think?

I don't know.

Are we gonna shift into, like,
creeps of the Bible or- Yeah.

Maybe that can be the worst, like a
level higher than, like, more- We'll

think of a word Jerk than jerk Yeah.

Jerk Worse than jerk.

Like creep is worse than jerk.

I don't know.

Yeah.

Anyway.

Okay.

All right, that's it.

Have a great day.

Toodles.

Bye.
