I.
It is 20 hours past midnight, flight TD 061 is both getting a heavy de-icing at the gate and a new guest for tonight, and of course we got our favorite shades on to travel right and style through the airport on the way to our destination. Tonight we depart for Roma at 9pm sharp heading for what is hopefully warmer climes in Italia, and we’re just wrapping up the packing for tonight and remember fair listener, the travel pros roll and don’t fold with tonight’s itinerary packed in a professional manner as February 9, 2022. Our first trip in a couple of weeks, but it feels like ages due to both my quarantine on Monday and the Lunar New Year last week, I hope you’re ready to go as well, and this is Danno ready to roll health check in hand, headphones at the ready, coming at you but not necessarily for you on the mic from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? As noted, tonight we have a great new guest in Dunia al-Jawad. Normally a guest for JD’s afternoon show, she’ll be covering for Lizz Kalo the next few weeks as she’s on real vacation, and we’re very excited to welcome our new contributor to the airwaves tonight. For right now though let’s get ready to head to Italy, but we’ll start in Detroit 40 years ago. At any rate, we gotta get on the train as we just pulled up in the cab and we’re kind of in a rush, so we’ll get back with you after a number of names en route to ICN. This is The Drop.
ANUMBEROFNAMES – Sharevari (12” vers)
The Drop has boarded the KTX train to ICN this evening, so we’re speeding along towards Incheon International Airport to catch flight TD061 bound for fair Italia for this week’s trip, scheduled for takeoff at 9pm local time with our new guest Dunia in tow as well. What’s happening tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju, as always great to have you with us.
We just started everything tonight with our TIGHT (or) feature, as we do every night. Amazing tune from 1981 that celebrated its 40th anniversary of release last year, and for those of you who are just joining us, that is not in fact Italo Disco despite the affected accent, but a tune made in Detroit.
A Number of Names was the short-lived duo responsible for one of the first techno releases that came from Detroit. Thanks to their lone release, the Italo disco inspired "Sharevari" b/w "Skitso," could be said that A Number of Names, along with Juan Atkins' and Rick Davis' Cybotron, the outfit that released "Alleys of Your Mind" around the same time as "Sharevari" in 1981, were proto-techno as much as the Stooges and MC5 were proto-punk. Both techno and punk took roughly the same amount of time to become fully realized styles after the appearance of their forebears. Coincidentally, each of these forebears came from Detroit and the area surrounding it.
It’s interesting to see the influences going back & forth in this era between Italy & the US, not just Detroit, but also New York City and Chicago, where the Italo Disco sound was having a huge influence on the underground dance floors of the time. Add in punk and hip-hop and you have one of the most interesting cultural milieus going on in any era. So tonight, we’ll spend part one going over some Italo Disco classics to warm up for the trip tonight to Rome, and that gives you a taste of the influence the disco sound of Italy had and continues to have even now.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Next block, we’ll start with our Italo Disco classics tour and up next we have Ryan Paris to be followed by Pino d’Angio & Five Letters, all of which we’ll read out once the bump is through. This is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday night flight to Rome.
_________

Back on The Drop, Danno here, on the train and COVID-free as the icy landscape of Korea sits in repose and flashes by outside of our window, and for those just joining us we welcome Dunia to the show as our fill-in for Lizz Kalo on the show tonight, and the lovely regular contributor to JD’s afternoon show joins us after we hit the top of the clock again upon boarding flight TD061 bound for Rome & Italia generally tonight. We just rocked a trio of old school italo disco classics right there, so let’s get to the specifics behind the sorcery…
Ryan Paris – DOLCE VITA (…a huge hit upon release in 1983, this made the artist t/n Fabio Roscioli an international star all over Europe & even in the US. "Dolce Vita" was released in the United Kingdom on the Carrere Records label, distributed by RCA and spent ten weeks in the UK Singles Chart, peaking at Number 5.[3] The record peaked at Number 1 in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Spain and peaked at Number 3 in Germany.)
Pino d’Angio – Okay Okay (…another tune celebrating 40 years since release in 1981. Pino was another rather big star in the 80’s & 90’s, with his biggest hit being the 1980 tune "Ma Quale Idea" or But Which Idea , which sold over 2 million copies in Europe.)
Five Letters – Tha Kee Tha Tha (…probably my favorite song title of all time. What are we gonna call it? Hmmm…I dunno, I’m sure something will come to us. More of a tune to showcase the influence of the italo disco sound elsewhere in Europe at the time of release in 1980, the group were from Paris, and this appeared on the Yellow Nights LP.)
Alright, so we’re about to pull up to the terminal right now for check-in, but we got time to let one more long player go bump in the night, and up next is Mr. Flagio with Take a Chance, to keep it in early 80’s to finish the first stanza of the radiological orchestra this evening. THIS is The Drop on your Imperial Italian Disco Round Trip Wednesday night.
Mr. Flagio – Take A Chance
II.
The Drop is back after the first jump of the evening on our Italian Round Trip Wednesday, departing at 9pm tonight on flight TD061 bound for Rome & the Italian peninsula. Danno here still checking in for the flight but already ready already to welcome our new guest Dunia to the flight for the first time tonight, but we got plenty of time before they start boarding so let’s recap those two old school jawns we just let into the air…
Adriano Calentano – Si E Spento Il Sole (…the Italian pioneer of rock & modern music right here with a tune from very early in his career released in 1961 on his 24,000 Baci LP. That title, by the way, means The Sun Has Gone Out in English. More from Sr. Calentano to finish part 2 tonight along with in hour 2 as Dunia has her own selection from him to enjoy on the flight to Rome.)
Ornella Vanoni – L’appuntamento (…fast forward on the timeline to 1970, this is the title track to Ms. Vanoni’s album. Ornella nowadays is one of the most credited artists in Italian music history, with countless albums and singles since her start 60 years ago, also in 1961, and this hit tune received renewed attention after appearing on the Ocean’s Twelve Soundtrack.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block we’ll continue with a few of our favorites to keep up the vintage feel, along with a little something extra cut for time from Dunia’s selections tonight. On deck we have Mina to be followed by THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday evening headin to the big boot.
_________
The Drop has arrived at the gate here at ICN, Danno here doing a little reading & watching the gate but not getting in line just yet. As we await the final call for flight TD 014 to Roma this evening we’ll get in a couple more cuts before they close the gate. But before that, let’s talk about those last few balloons we let out...
Mina – Parole Parole (…we kept it early 70’s there to start, this being a classic from 1972. Mina Mazzini was a staple of television variety shows[5] and a dominant figure in Italian pop music from the 1960s to the mid-1970s,[6] known for her three-octave vocal range,[7] the agility of her soprano voice,[7] and her image as an emancipated woman. Interestingly, after release a parody version of this tune was made by Adriano Calentano, also becoming a huge hit.)
Patty Pravo – Pazza idea (…the opener & title track to Miss Pravo’s 1973 album meaning Crazy Idea. The artist is reportedly the third best-selling Italian artist of all time, after Mina and Adriano Celentano, having sold more than 110 million records as of 2014..)
JOVANOTTI - Chiaro Di Luna (…Lorenzo Cherubini popularly known as Jovanotti has been active in Italian music since 1988. He plays the drum and guitar. When he started, he did a mix of hip hop, rap, and disco but drifted into a funk, world music and even classical arrangements and ska. He has most of his songs sang in Italian but some are in Spanish.)
Moving towards halftime this evening, we’ll finish the way we started with what could be argued is the most infectious nonsense tune ever made with (bottom), but for now it’s no nonsense with Caterina Caselli covering the Stones and Paint It Black, which is called Tutto nero in Italian, naturally. THIS is The Drop and it’s time to get on the plane on our Round Trip to Rome.
Caterina Caselli – Tutto nero (Paint It Black)
Adriano Calentano – Prisencolinensinainciusol

III & IV Round Trip

Adriano Celentano - Il tempo se ne va
Gabriella Ferri – Remedios
Gazzelle – Polynesia
Legno feat Divanoletto – All You Can Eat
La Municipàl - I Tuoi Bellissimi Difetti
Colombre – Pulviscolo

Aiello – Arsenico
Motta – Chissa Dove Sarai
MINA - Grande grande grande
Rita Pavone – Che m’importa del mondo
IU – heart (마음)
Meejah – Youth (Heaven) – Extended vers

Adriano Celentano - Il tempo se ne va
• Adriano Celentano is a musician and songwriter. But also, an actor and film director. In 1962 he founded his own record label “Clan Celentano” still active today.
• Some believe that he introduced rock to Italy. His songs were influenced by Elvis and actor Jerry Lewis.

Gabriella Ferri – Remedios (Remedies)
- Born in Rome in 1942, Ferri started working in music at a Milan nightclub at 21, then moved to Rome and gained popularity there a couple of years later, beginning to release songs professionally then.
- She later starred in several popular Italian TV shows in the 1970’s but had left the spotlight by the 1990’s, seemingly by choice. This tune is the title track to her 1974 album, and is sung all in Spanish.
Gazzelle - Polynesia
• Five years ago, Flavio Pardini used to work in restaurants or caffès of Rome. Much of his debut album, “Superbattito” (2017), was composed while the singer had some spare time from making coffees for tourists. He tried to stay low, but the success of his electronic indie-pop with clear references to groups from the 1990s, like Underworld, Coldplay, and Oasis, got in his way.
• In 2018, he released the album “Punk” and consolidated his urban lyrics about drugs, depression and big cities, such as “Sopra”.

Legno feat Divanoletto – All You Can Eat
- This is a pop duo that made their debut in 2018. The identity of the duo is a rather open secret, as the two lads from Tuscany always wear masks.
- At any rate, this tune dropped as a standalone single in 2019, and true to form, the boys are wearing boxes around their heads, with guest vocalist Divanoletto doing his thing maskless on the video.
La Municipàl - I Tuoi Bellissimi Difetti
• La Municipàl started in 2013 as a project by brothers Carmine and Isabella Tundo, but the first official album was released only three years later.
• With a melancholic and romantic view of the world, the duo has an impressive melodic sense and their ironic lyrics look like diaries written by real young people: neither ostentation nor exaggeration. Perhaps a taste acquired by growing up in a comune in southern Italy with less than 30 thousand people. La Municipàl has a much larger-than-life sound that suggests its formation, with Arcade Fire influences in the sad moments and some pinches of electro-pop in the upbeat moments.
Colombre – Pulviscolo (Dust)
- This tune is the title track from the artist’s 2017 solo debut album and is the opening tune.
- Colombre is the solo project of Giovanni Imperato, who is a veteran of the indie scene in Italy, mainly due to his work with Chewingum, who were a well-known earlier project.

Aiello - Arsenico
• Antonio Aiello was born in southern Italy, but spent much of his life in Rome. And despite having only one album in his career, the fan of soul music and electronic had brief periods of fame on the Roman scene.
• He really broke out in 2019, when the single “Arsenico” was released. The lyrics about a distant love affair via Instagram became a success, mainly because of the clip with “real images” of the painful relationship. If you go beyond the corny look and some heavy-hand techno music tracks, you might like the trap beats with romantic lyrics.
Motta – Chissa Dove Sarai (Who knows where you will be)
- This is a beautiful, layered tune from the artist’s 2018 album Vivere O Morire (live or die).
- Full name Francesco Motta who hails from Pisa originally, he made his debut in 2010 with the rock band Criminal Jokers. In 2013 he quit the band and went to Rome to study composition and scoring. Fast forward to 2019, and he was performing one of his pieces at the San Remo Music Festival.
MINA - Grande grande grande
• Anna Maria Mazzini simply known as Mina has made marks on the Italian music industry, especially in pop music.
• She was a dominant figure in Italian pop music from the 1960s to the mid-1970s. She is known for her agility in the soprano voice and three-octave vocal range. Her creativity of perfectly combining both modern styles with traditional Italian melodies and swing music swoons her up as the most versatile Italian pop singer. Mina has so much credit to her name and therefore belongs to the list of best Italian musicians 2019.
Rita Pavone – Che m’importa dil mondo (What does the world matter to me)
- The artist was a dominant figure in music and film during the 1960’s who was seemingly everywhere all at once.
- Interestingly, as a young woman she traveled to the US in 1964 as she had a Top 40 hit there, making an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.
- While in the United States she sang alongside Diana Ross and The Supremes, Ella Fitzgerald, Tom Jones, Duke Ellington, and Paul Anka. She also sang at Carnegie Hall in New York City. It is said that Elvis Presley made a painting of her after she went to Memphis and met her at a recording studio. It is also said that she recorded a duet with Barbra Streisand, but this has remained unsubstantiated. There is, however, an indoor photograph of Pavone and Streisand together, apparently shot in New York City in May 1964.
IU – heart (마음)
• The name IU is a combination of 'I' and 'you' meaning "you and I become one through music.
• With the success of her 2011 albums, Real+ and Last Fantasy, IU established herself as a formidable force on the music charts of her native country and further cemented her girl next door image as Korea's "little sister". She is known now as "The Nation's Sweetheart".

Meejah – Youth (Heaven) – Extended vers
