Siemens Mobility is nearing the finish line on its new train factory in Goole.
The factory, set to open this spring, will now assemble up to 80% of the new Piccadilly line Tube trains, exceeding the initial 50% target.
The new factory is part of a £200 million investment in the Goole rail village, a hub for rail technology and innovation.
The first Piccadilly line train has already journeyed from Goole's sister factory in Vienna and undergone rigorous testing in Germany with TfL conducting further tests before serving passengers in 2025.
Quantum technology for rail is to be developed further after rail monitoring company Monirail have secured a significant grant from the department for science, innovation and technology to develop a quantum based navigation system for railways.
The technology will work by utilizing the train as a sensor, which will continuously monitor track conditions and employing quantum sensors to measure gravity, time, magnetic fields and acceleration. All this data together should deliver unprecendeted levels of positional accuracy.
Innovative technology that could improve high-speed internet and phone connectivity on trains can now be tested on a specially designed track.
The "Gigabit Innovation Track" (GINT), a 10-kilometre test track in Germany is dedicated to testing mobile communications for trains and is funded by the German government and spearheaded by Deutsche Bahn, Ericsson, O2 Telefónica, and Vantage Towers.
The research project aims to improve the passenger experience as well as improve internet connectivity for rail transport.
