Lighter Than You Started is a daily podcast offering gentle reflections on the news, the noise, and the small human moments that shape our days. With wry humour and quiet honesty, it’s not about fixing you, just about ending each day feeling a little lighter than when it began.
Hi I'm Keith and welcome to Lighter than You Started. It's Thursday and today I'd like to explore something that can quietly take far more of our energy than we realise. The need to have the last word. Now I don't just mean in an argument. I mean that quiet feeling that we need to explain ourselves one more time.
Keith:Clarify one more point. Send one more message. Offer one final justification. Make sure the other person completely understands. There's something very human about that.
Keith:Most of us want to feel understood. We want people to know our intentions. We want to leave conversations believing we've expressed ourselves well. So when something feels unfinished the temptation is to return. To add another sentence another explanation another attempt to make everything perfectly clear.
Keith:Sometimes that's the right thing to do. Sometimes the conversation genuinely needs another moment. An apology. A clarification. A thoughtful follow-up.
Keith:But sometimes we're no longer speaking for the benefit of the conversation. We're speaking to quiet our own discomfort. Because uncertainty is uncomfortable. Not knowing exactly what someone else thinks is uncomfortable. Wondering whether they understood us or even misunderstood us is uncomfortable.
Keith:So we keep talking. Not because the conversation needs it but because we do. Thursday often brings this feeling. The week has been filled with conversations, meetings, emails, phone calls, messages and somewhere amongst them there may be one interaction that continues echoing quietly in your mind. You wonder if you should send another message.
Keith:Explain one more point. Offer one final thought. But perhaps not every conversation needs another sentence. Sometimes silence is not unfinished business. Sometimes it's trust.
Keith:Trust that you've said enough. Trust that the other person is capable of thinking for themselves. Trust that not every misunderstanding has to be eliminated before you can move on. There's something deeply peaceful about recognizing when you've already said what needed saying. Because beyond that point more words don't always create more understanding.
Keith:Sometimes they simply create more noise. You don't need to have the last word. You don't need every conversation to end exactly as you'd hoped. You don't need perfect certainty that everyone interpreted your words exactly as you intended. You simply need to know that you spoke honestly, kindly and with the best understanding you had in that moment.
Keith:After that the conversation belongs to both people not just you. So if today you find yourself reaching for one more explanation, one more email, one more message Perhaps gently pause and ask yourself am I adding something helpful or am I simply finding it difficult to let the conversation rest? Sometimes the most peaceful ending isn't another sentence. It's allowing the conversation to finish. Today's thought for you.
Keith:You don't need to have the last word. Thank you for sharing this moment and as always I hope you end today feeling lighter than you started. Go gently and I'll see you tomorrow on the flip side. You can now listen to the lighter than you started podcast on Alexa. Simply say Alexa play the lighter than you started podcast.
