The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight we finally had the perfect opportunity to welcome Mark Evich to the show. The LA-via-Russia soul singer had some great things to talk about while we premiered his latest single "PRIME," which drops next Friday!

Show Notes

As broadcast April 15, 2022 with plenty of exclusive stuff to take home with you.  Tonight we welcomed LA-based soul singer-songwriter Mark Evich to the show, and just like our conversations via text leading up to this, we covered a lot.  From his disgust with the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the influence of an art teacher helping him discover his love of rnb back in the day, it was a great conversation not to mention the choice selects on the playlist!  We're honored to give the world premiere spin to his upcoming single "PRIME," which you can only get a listen to right here on The Drop until next Friday!

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight as we mark the true beginning of the weekend as Friday’s glorious sun hath set and we have been truly blessed by Mother Nature this April and the sunsoaked beat goes on tonight, burned on the parts not covered in spacetime as April 15, 2022. Danno here and welcome to this week’s cosmic showpiece, on the mic and the bumps from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? So, it’s Friday night and we have another great original show lined up with guest artist selector originally out of Russia now based in LA and his name is Mark Evich. A really amazing cat to talk to about anything be it music, life, and even the elephant in the room any time you hear the word Russia of late, politics. And we’ll talk about all of these things in our 2nd hour showcase as he selects the tunes for the entirety of the 2nd hour’s program. We also are going to premeire a tune from the artist that is not out yet to start part 4 that is called PRIME, so lots of exciting stuff to rock this evening as Mark joins us on the phone from LA. For right now though, let’s talk history, let’s talk strategy, and most importantly, let’s tighten it up like the Drells and Archie Bell. This is The Drop.
Archie Bell & The Drells – Strategy
________
The Drop has officially started the strategery this evening, ready to welcome our guest artist selector out of LA Mark Evich to the show in hour 2 for another World Premiere on the show, so stay tuned for part 4. Mark Evich is originally out of Russia and moved to the US because he says it was kinda hard to have a run-in with D’Angelo on the streets of Moscow, and we’re lining up some rnb-tinged joints and jams to set up his appearance in about an hour’s time.
For right now we just started with Archie Bell & The Drells for our TIGHT (or) feature, that tune was released in 1979 and was the title track to the Strategy LP. The crew was a pioneering act on Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, putting Philly soul on the map during their time and giving birth to so many important hip-hop, soul and rnb acts like The Roots that would come later. However, don’t get it twisted, they were not from Philly but hailed from Houston, which is another little factoid to note on our warm-up playlist for tonight before Mark Evich joins us on the gig.
Now, the reason we played Strategy tonight is an interesting bit that happened 10 years prior to this joint coming out, and that is Archie Bell being discharged from the Army after completing his tour of duty in Vietnam. We’ll also be talking about war with Mark Evich when he joins the show in hour 2, the equally stupid and senseless current conflict going on in Ukraine, which as a Russian really hits home with him.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast…
So now that we’ve got the old stuff outta the way, let’s begin the process of bumpin as we await Mark Evich’s superyacht to arrive in hour 2. Up next we have a rare quartet of some lo-fi soul and slow burn to feel, with Dwele leading the way followed by Karriem Riggins, Eric Lau and Tajima hal to finish the honors, and we’ll talk about all of this after the spins subside. THIS is The Drop on your PRIME world premiere Friday night.

Back on The Drop and into the final airbreak for here in the first quarter of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno here making the airwaves move just so in order to warm up for our guest artist selector tonight. Mark Evich is a soul singer who hails from Russia originally, but has called New York and now LA home in the states, and his new tune PRIME comes out next Friday which we’ll hear to start part 4 tonight as he joins us on the phone to take over the tunes for hour two. As to what we just fired off, let’s get the details …
Dwele – A.N.G.E.L. (…a little interlude from the RIZE LP from 2000 which turned out to be a quite popular tastemaker hit at the time. Gilles Peterson even put this on his Worldwide vol 2 compilation shortly after, which is always something that adds some fuel to an artists’ career even now.)
Karriem Riggins – Bahia Dreamin’ (…from a collection of beats called Headnod Suite, released in 2017. Karriem is an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist and producer who still seems to be a tad under the radar even though there have been collabs with some of the best names in the biz, which we’ll touch on with the final tune here in part 1.)
Eric Lau - Contact (…for those not familiar, the artist hails from London and this appeared on another 2017 LP called Examples. Lau’s production style is extremely original, using a mix of very obscure samples along with original live and sequenced progressions.)
tajima hal – Wavemotion (…this artist is a producer and DJ who hails from Yokohama and is the founder of Hermit City Recordigs while also being one of the best producers on the Urban Waves Records imprint, amongst other things.)
Okay, so we gotta get another dab for Karriem Riggins to finish the first quarter, and to showcase what’s up we’ll rock a contributing appearance from Riggins with BADBADNOTGOOD along with Brasilero legend Arthur Verocai to finish, and this is Beside April to close things as we sit in the exact middle of it. This is The Drop on your Mark Evich world premiere Friday night.

II
The Drop returns as prime time continues this evening. LA-based Russian soul singer Mark Evich will join us in hour 2 tonight to take over the playlist and talk about his favorite tunes amongst other things, and we also have an early spin of his latest tune PRIME which is not out until next Friday to showcase in part 4 of the progression. For right now though, we just cold opened the 2nd can with...
The Hue feat Kissey Asplund – Stressin’ ( …a joint that featured on Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz 7 mix. For those unfamiliar, The Hue is veteran house producer and DJ JT Donaldson along with Tim K, and that tune can only be found in mixed form on most music platforms now.)
Thes One – Hard Times ( …this would be one half of the People Under the Stairs duo out of LA, in case you’re not getting the bells rung with the name. Hard Times appeared on a 2014 beat tape called Where The Piecelock Ends, so do check if you haven’t listened in full.)
Now before we continue with what we’re doing here….#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So to continue with the controlled noise we’re going to turn the tempo down a touch for the next few vibes. On deck is VanJess to be followed by Masego along with DJ Cam and his quartet, all of which we’ll discuss further after we let it out. THIS is The Drop on your PRIME time for crime time Friday night.
____________
The Drop continues tonight as we begin wrapping up the first half of the gig. Danno here, readying the dock for Mark Evich, who is a soul singer based in LA and is out with a new tune called PRIME next Friday. We’ll give that one the world premiere treatment tonight as we start part 4, and we must mention Mark has spent time here in Korea Daegu specifically, and we’ll get a little language skills from him to close the show as an added bonus for the aperitif. For right now, let’s run down the last block...
VanJess feat Lucky Daye – Slow Down (…this is a tune that dropped last year in August as part of the excellent Homegrown EP from the Nigerian-American sister duo. Lucky Daye also just dropped a new album in early March called Candydrip, and that it certainly is if you wanna take a deeper dive on either.)
Masego & FKJ – Tadow (…the tune that kind of made the career for both artists, the video of their production of this tune going viral back in 2018 upon release as a single to the Lady Lady LP.)
DJ Cam Quartet – Rebirth of Cool (…after 3 decades in the game DJ Cam just keeps innovating, the French legend of jazzy downtempo released this title track to the album back in 2008, but the artist has continued to put out new grooves in the meantime, which is great to see.)
So, it’s such a sunny day here in Gwangju it almost feels like LA, where the sunshine is enforced by law with mornings excluded. We’ll finish with Robert Glasper and his experiment and a live rendition of Roy Ayers Everybody Loves The Sunshine to close, and this one takes its time so you might as well sit back. THIS is The Drop on your Mark Evich Friday night, and that’s halftime no matter where you are.
