The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A short bit of rather surprising chart history from Queen for our history to start the night, then Danno takes us through both hours of new tunes & big hits with Aline providing the script but not in the studio for this week.

Show Notes

As broadcast November 22, 2021 with plenty of extra pressure for your podcast experience.  Tonight we remember David Bowie & Queen's fabulous collab "Under Pressure," which went to #1 on the UK charts yesterday 40 years ago.  After that it's some big credits and kudos all around for Joey Pecoraro, and great new tunes from Cate Le Bon, Big Thief, and Alex Isley amongst other worthies.  For our 2nd hour main feature, Aline was unable to record our weekly Popcast with Danno sick all of last week, but she still powered through with a great selection of new & recent singles for the end of the show!

It is 20 hours past midnight on a cold one here in our fair city of light, so as usual it’s time to warm up the vibe and the body temperature courtesy of a dance with the new muses tonight. And this evening’s Monday closeup on all the new ladies is focused in as November 22, 2021. This is Danno ready to cue up everything for The Drop from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? A bit of a respite this weekend from the relentless big time releases of the past few weeks, so that gives us a chance to feature some artists that the past few weeks wouldn’t have enough oxygen to get a shot on Mondays, with Big Thief, Joey Pecoraro, and Robert Glasper the bigger names amongst the milieu for this evening’s first hour playlist. Aline is not in the studio tonight as our final missed studio session due to my endless flu scenario from last week, but the good news is two-fold, as she’s rocked the playlist for The Popcast and I’m over the illness. However, we mark yesterday 40 years ago when Queen & David Bowie went to #1, so let’s play that to begin things because we’re under pressure the more we talk here on the mic. THIS is The Drop.
Queen with David Bowie – Under Pressure
The Drop has lit the torch on our New Muses Monday weekly kickoff after the latest and one of the last new music release weekends of the calendar year as 2021 in music begins the wind down. Danno here, going through all the new stuff, flying solo for the full two hours but Aline has furnished the playlist and new cuts for the Popcast. And of course, most grateful thanks go out to you, fair listener, for joining us.
To start, as we are wont to do, we just began the radiological experience for tonight here on GFN with our TIGHT (or) feature with David Bowie & Queen’s Under Pressure, a single that went to #1 in the UK yesterday 40 years ago.
According to Queen bass player John Deacon, Freddie Mercury did most of the songwriting on this, although everyone contributed. The lyrics deal with how pressure can destroy lives, but love can be the answer. The lyrics are characteristic of Mercury's songwriting.

Deacon however did come up with the iconic two-note bass riff, although it came very close to vanishing: according to Roger Taylor in the Days of our Lives documentary, Deacon came up with the riff, then the band went for pizza before coming back to continue rehearsals. Upon returning, Deacon had completely forgotten his idea! Luckily, Taylor eventually remembered how the bassline went.
Speaking of that bassline, it was of course famously sampled by Vanilla Ice on his breakout hit Ice, Ice Baby. Details are fudgy, but it appears that the sample was never cleared and a settlement was reached with Queen and Bowie long after Vanilla's song hit it big.
At any rate, rest in power to both Bowie & Mercury.
So now that we have the history lesson in for tonight, let’s get to the new stuff, and our first block we have joints from Telemono, dvr, and Cate Le Bon. We’ll discuss everything after they breathe out in full, but for now THIS is The Drop on your new Muses Monday night.
__________
The Drop recommissions after our initial trio of new tunes for the week, and an interesting weekend that was light on big time releases so we let some more indie stuff breathe from the past weekend in the last block. Of course, our main lady Aline Verduyn will be adding her bits of new pop for our 2nd hour popcast up at the top of the hour, but not here in the studio I’ll be on the mic for the full two hours tonight, or whatever that means in actual time given the music-focused nature of the gig. For now through, we go to the recap, that was...
Telemona – 3AM (…interesting solo project out of Melbourne right here that’s just coming up and has had a feature on Australia’s triple j. This is the band project of Marcello Macdonald, so keep an eye if you dug that, pretty interesting stuff.)
dvr – stupid* (…Previously this year, the artist was a Scottish kid making music in his bedroom, but now he’s got several hundred thousand fans and a tune with Kenny Beats. On June 15th, dvr released his first-ever EP, Tape_01. Being an avid fan of producer Kenny Beats, dvr posted the link to his EP on the KennyBeats discord server: a fifty-thousand strong community centered around making and sharing music.)
Cate Le Bon – Moderation (…this is another new single from her forthcoming album Pompeii. “Moderation” follows “Running Away,” and it comes with a new video directed by Juliana and Nicola Giraffe. The album is out February 4 via Mexican Summer.)
Now, we’ve got couple tunes here to end part 1, and first up is one of the bigger names of the weekend’s releases in Big Thief called Time Escaping. This hails another new album that’s out in February called Dragon New Warm Mountain, I Believe In You. To finish we’ll follow that up with Yot Club and a tune called Hole, which is the latest from Mississippi-raised and Memphis-based Ryan Kaiser, and that standalone is gonna be the end of things tonight. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
Big Thief – Time Escaping
Yot Club – Hole
II
The Drop assembles verbally once again after the first jump of the night tonight. Big ups to Joey Pecoraro, whose out with a new tune and has a big credit to his name, so we started with a pair of tunes to send big congrats to him. Hope all is well with you, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here on the mic, feeling better after a week waaaaay under the weather, and Aline has the tunes but won’t be in for our 2nd hour Popcast tonight. So, we just started with...
Joey Pecoraro – The Shaman (…this is the latest from the young indie performer who’s apparently getting notice in very, very high places. His last album Old Time Radio from this year is lovely stuff if you’re looking for more.)
Adele with Erroll Garner – All Night Parking (Interlude) (…of course, Adele is out with her latest album as of Friday called 30. This tune in particular was written by Adele & Erroll Garner, but the big bit for us is the production notes, as it was produced by Joey Pecoraro & Greg Kurstin. Congrats on this one to Joey, that is huge..)

So, moving ahead this evening, next block we have Allan8h along with Madeline Kenney and something from Alex Isley featuring Robert Glasper, and we’ll discuss further side opposite the sounds. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
___________
The Drop returns this evening and into the ultimate verbosities for our first half this evening. How’s it going, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here holding it down finally healthy tonight, but Aline will not be in for the Popcast 2nd hour and has given the tunes for our 2nd hour playlist. However, let’s get to the liner notes on the notes we just let float…
Alann8h – Rings of Saturn (…the young artist is definitely on the way to big things. This tune was part of her Apollo8 EP, just out as of last week. Up to a couple hundred thousand listeners on Spotify alone, and this has been an EP that has been waiting in the wings for a while.)
Madeline Kenney – I’ll Get Over It (…the artist released her latest album Sucker’s Lunch last year and followed it up at the beginning of this year with the Summer Quarter EP. This latest single is a reflection on her impending 30th birthday, and being a working musician during the pandemic.)
Alex Isley feat Jack Dine & Robert Glasper – Still Wonder (…singer-songwriter Alex Isley and Jack Dine have tapped Grammy winner Robert Glasper for this latest single. The artist says that this is the final single to get released prior to her still-unnamed album, although along with the name of the LP we don’t know when that’s coming out but we’d guess early next year.)

So, to close the first hour this evening, we have a couple of tunes to change the vibe a bit with Lily Kaplan up next called Just Friends and we’ll close with a band called 1010 Benja Street titled High, and that’ll do it for our first 57 tonight. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday and it is indeed halftime.
Lily Kaplan – Just Friends
1010 Benja SL – High
