Welcome to the AHRN Minute. My name is Jenny Nielsen, and today we're breaking down the choice between living on base and off base.
When you receive new PCS orders, one of the biggest housing decisions you’ll face is where to live. So, how do you decide?
Living on base can mean a shorter commute, easy access to amenities like the commissary, exchange, fitness centers, and MWR, as well as a built-in community of other military families.
On the other hand, living off base gives you more housing options, privacy, and the flexibility to choose your neighborhood and potentially your school district.
Cost is another important factor. Don’t just compare your rent to your BAH. Consider utilities, insurance, deposits, pet fees, transportation, and your daily commute.
And if you’re considering on-base housing, check availability early. Some installations have waitlists that can last several months or longer.
Ultimately, there’s no right answer for every military family. Think about your budget, lifestyle, and what matters most to you at your new duty station.
That’s your AHRN Minute, and thanks for listening!
