Challenging myself to record a podcast episode a day for my 50th year on this planet.
Chris: Hello, welcome to
Dailyish for August 22nd, 2026.
I'm recording an episode every day
for this, my 50th year on the planet.
Well, I have to do a quick little
statement, I guess, of sorts of
what I'm using AI for and what I'm
not on this podcast in particular.
It's a thing that's fairly
common in the web dev tech
circles that I edit podcasts for.
The clients I edit podcasts for have
some sort of statement of their AI usage.
I don't see it as commonly
among my peers who are editing
podcasts and things like that.
It's kind of just assumed that you're
gonna be all in on AI, I think generally
in the content creation area of the world
Not that I disagree or agree with that,
but just as a matter of stating where
and how I'm using AI tools, I thought
I'd throw this episode in the, in the can
and maybe by way of a question
to ask you, the listener, is does
it change your opinion of the
podcast if you found out after the
fact there was a lot of AI usage?
Maybe people are like writing a script
and then using AI to create voices of
people that don't actually exist to
read part of it or play as a guest or
a co-host in a podcast where it's a
human talking to an AI bot that they
don't ever declare, and they tell an
interesting story or something that
happened, but don't declare that it's AI.
Does that affect your enjoyment
of it after the fact, beforehand?
How does that sit with you?
Because that's all very possible with AI.
I could have a voice generated
in this podcast talking for me.
It could mimic my voice even.
I would guess that unless you know me
in real life, you might not know or be
able to tell that it's AI doing that
So in terms of declaring what I'm using
for AI in this podcast, I won't be
using, uh, AI-generated voices and things
like that unless I very specifically
call it out and tell you ahead of time.
I could see using it for feedback
or comments from listeners.
So if some, if some of you email me
and just send text, having a alternate
voice for that is kind of handy.
But generally, I'd probably just
read it out again in my own voice.
The music intro and outro that you
hear at the beginning and end of
each episode is me recording, uh,
my guitar into the microphone, not
AI-generated, although that certainly
could be these days very easily
I don't even really plan to use AI to
generate a transcript that I could read.
In the previous episode I recorded, I
had read some thoughts into a note app
and then read off that transcript to
record the episode, which made it kind
of sound a little more jilted and almost
robotic, I feel like, 'cause I wasn't
just saying thought stuff off the top
of my head like I am in this episode.
And so the audio to me definitely
sounded like something that was
scripted and so therefore might sound
slightly more AI than this more natural
but more scattered kind of recording
I do use an app called Descript that
has a very heavy AI component to it,
the ways that I use it are for things
that are kind of like powered up
f-s- find and replace kind of thing.
It's not exactly like
AI generating content.
It's more of things where it's like
looking for gaps that are longer than 1.5
seconds and just removing that
when I mess up or I pause toâ¦
And I don't have to actually
hit pause in recording.
I could just stop talking.
There's empty air.
It'll just automatically delete that.
I could have it go through and
remove ums and ahs that are
unnecessary in the conversation
I currently use it to enable
their, what they call Studio Sound.
So it does a bit of EQing and reverb and
all those kinds of things to clean up
the sound of my voice as it's recorded.
Uh, it's tooling that I don't use all
the time with my clients where I do it
more of a manual system that I have a
workflow for running their audio through.
But it is a handy way to get a pretty
good baseline of a recording without
putting a lot of effort into it.
And technically that's AI, but I,
again, it's tools that I use in
other ways to do the same thing,
and Descript just calls it AI
But I wouldn't really classify
it as an AI tool 'cause it's not
doing any sort of generative based
on, you know, someone else's prior
work kind of editing or creation
The other big area that is AI
or AI adjacent tooling is the
transcript that's generated.
So as I record, it's actually transcribing
my words, so then I can actually edit
it like it's a Word document or, you
know, typed out document and edit the
text directly, which will affect the
audio that's recorded directly as well.
And so that makes it a lot easier
and quicker, especially if you're
doing, say, hypothetically,
a, a daily podcast recording
It's not necessarily generating new things
based off of existing IP or content.
I'm sure it's still wasting
resources somehow in some way,
'cause that doesn't happen for free
For some episodes, I might use the AI
transcription service to then generate
a summary of that episode based off of
the transcript, and then I will edit
that before I would actually paste it
into the show notes description that
you would see or read on, uh, your
podcast app of choice or on the website.
So I think that's it for how I might use
AI in this recording of the daily podcast.
I thought about using it for episode
artwork, but I think I'll just, if
appropriate, if there's something
that's appropriate visually to include,
like last episode's, I included a
screenshot of the Cheapcharts.com
that I was mentioning and that kind
of thing, I would include that, but
otherwise I'll just do my own creation.
I kind of realized I might have
stumbled into duplicating my selfie
a day project from last year by, if
I wanted to just include a selfie as
episode artwork so each episode looked
different, I could just redo the selfie
a day project as episode artwork.
But again, probably not gonna happen.
All right.
You can email me chris.ens@gmail.com
if you have thoughts about AI usage
in general or as it relates to a
podcast you're listening to, or just
any other thoughts or comments you
have about the show and would like
me to talk about in a future episode.
Be sure to reference what episode
you're replying to or talking to me
about just so I have a way of tracking
the conversation a little better.
In any case, thanks for listening.
Have a great day.
Bye.
