I am here now, and I will stay with you all night. Close by, in the soft dark ā the way the moon is close, even when it is far.
My name is Chang'e. In the old stories of China, I am the lady who lives upon the moon ā who long ago drank the draught of immortality and rose, light as a breath, into the night sky, and have kept the moon's quiet company ever since.
From here, I can see the whole sleeping world. Every roof, every darkened window, every weary soul lying down at the end of the long day. And tonight, among all of them, I see you.
So let me rest my soft light on you for a while. You do not have to do anything but lie still beneath it. You are safe enough, now, to rest.
Let us begin with one slow breath together.
Breathe in, gently, and let the cool night air come all the way down, silver and quiet as moonlight.
And let it go, long and slow, slower going out than it came in. And as it leaves, let a little of the day drift up and away from you.
Again. Breathe in. There is nothing to reach for in this breath. Only the soft light to receive.
And out. Let your shoulders come down from where they have been holding all day.
Again, breathe in the deep quiet of the night.
And out. Let yourself grow light, the way everything does under the moon.
One more. Breathe in. And let it all go. The watching is mine tonight. You only have to rest.
Let me stay close now, while your body remembers it is safe to be still.
Let the top of your head grow soft. Let your forehead smooth, the way the sky smooths when the moon climbs into it. Let the small muscles around your eyes rest. There is nothing here you need to watch for. Let your eyes stay closed.
Let your jaw unclench. Let your mouth soften. Let your throat loosen.
Let your shoulders sink down, and down, away from your ears, until they are heavy and low.
Let your arms grow heavy beside you, and give all their weight to the bed. Let your hands open. There is nothing left for them to hold tonight.
Let your chest soften, and your breathing slow on its own. Let your back settle, one part at a time, into what holds you.
Let your belly rise and fall, softer each time. Let your hips grow heavy. Let the long lines of your legs grow heavy too ā your knees, your calves, all the way down, until even your feet are quiet, and still.
You are heavy now. You are held. And the moon is keeping its watch over you.
Let me tell you what it is like up here, so you can drift toward it.
The moon is not a cold place, the way people think. It is quiet, and silver, and still ā a great calm palace of pale light, where nothing is ever rushed and nothing is ever loud. A jade hare keeps me company here, grinding her soft medicines in the hush.
And every night, I do one simple thing. I keep my lamp lit in the dark, so that no one below ever has to sleep in a sky with no light in it. The moon you have looked up at all your life ā that soft glow at your window ā that is me, keeping the lamp lit for you.
Think of how many have slept beneath this same light. Your mother, and hers, and every soul who ever lived, all the way back to the very first night. They all lay down under this moon, and let it soothe them, and rose again in the morning. Tonight you join that long, quiet line ā held in the same gentle light that has watched over the whole sleeping world since the beginning.
You are not alone in the dark. You never were. I am here, on the moon, keeping the light, and I will not look away while you sleep.
You can let go now. All of it.
The day is over. The moon is high. You are watched over, softly, by the lady of the moon, who has all the patience of the long night sky.
Nothing has to be solved before morning. Nothing has to be reached for in the dark. Nothing has to be carried into sleep.
You have been awake long enough today. You have carried enough.
You are allowed to rest now. Fully. All the way down.
Let yourself grow heavier still, into the bed, into the dark, into the soft silver quiet of the moonlight.
Let my voice begin to drift farther away now. You can let it go. You do not have to hold onto the words. The light stays, even as they fade.
Sink, now. Let the bed take all of your weight. Let the dark be soft around you, washed in pale moonlight, calm as the palace in the sky.
Down, and down, each breath carrying you a little farther.
There is nowhere you have to be. There is nothing you have to know. The moon is holding the night for you.
The night is long, and you are safe inside it. I am right here, high and bright above you, keeping the lamp lit until morning.
You can rest. The light is kept. And I am here.
Sleep now. I will keep the watch until morning.
