[00:00:00] Welcome back to Own Your Impact. I am so excited to have you here for another week. Now, last week we talked about why smart people stay stuck building their businesses. It's not because you lack skills. It's not because you lack strategy. It's because the strategy you're following, the advice you're following is designed for a different wiring than yours.
[00:00:22] Today, I want to explore something that might sound controversial. What if your resistance to doing certain business building activities isn't laziness or lack of discipline? What if it's actually your wisdom protecting you from the wrong path? Because here's what I've discovered. When you try to force someone else's success formula into your business, it doesn't just fail to work.
[00:00:45] It actively destroys your momentum. Here's what this looks like. Someone tells you to start a podcast, you resist. They say, build an email list, and you procrastinate. They tell you you have to network more, you have to get out there, you have [00:01:00] to connect with people in person, and you just don't.
[00:01:04] So as a result, what do you think? You think you have a discipline problem. You think you're not committed enough and you start questioning whether you really want this business at all. But here's what I think is actually happening. Your nervous system is giving you data. Your body knows before your brain does when something isn't aligned with how you're wired.
[00:01:25] The problem is we've been taught to ignore that data. We've been taught that resistance means we need to push harder. That procrastination is a character flaw that if something feels hard, we just need to work harder, we need more discipline. But what if resistance is actually intelligent? What if your body is trying to tell you this path isn't for you, no matter how well it worked for someone else.
[00:01:48] That's the hidden cost of these copy paste strategies. It's not just that they don't work as well, though that's true. It's that they actively drain your energy, erode your confidence, and make you [00:02:00] question whether you're cut out for this at all. And the tragedy is this. You are cut out for this. You just need to build it differently.
[00:02:08] Here's why copy paste strategies are so seductive and so dangerous. They're seductive because they come with proof. Someone built a seven figure business doing X, Y, z. They have the screenshots, they have the testimonials, they have the case studies, and they're telling you, just do what I did. And it sounds so simple.
[00:02:27] Follow the formula, get the results. But here's what they're not telling you. That formula worked for them because it's aligned with their archetype, their natural wiring, their way of thinking, and creating transformation. And all of those screenshots and testimonials are likely people who also have the same archetype, a similar natural wiring and a similar way of thinking to create transformation.
[00:02:53] But if you're not wired that way and you try to copy it, you're not just learning a strategy, you're trying to rewire [00:03:00] your entire nervous system to function like someone else and it doesn't work.
[00:03:04] Here's some examples. I spent months trying to build an online course. I went in person to learn from Amy Porterfield and her team directly on how to build an online course. I had been told repeatedly this was the path to scale, to freedom, to passive income.
[00:03:22] That's what we all want, right? I had great content. It was about, , building your book into a business. I had a cool name. I had the URL. I knew my stuff, but I would sit down and try to write out this course according to what I'd been taught, and I could not do it for myself. I had done it for other people, but I couldn't do it for myself.
[00:03:42] And I just thought, well, I. I guess I'll figure it out later. I'm here, I'll help people with their courses, and I sat down with my new friend Jill, who's Amy's, , content, , strategist , and helps her with her courses and writes a lot of the behind the scenes stuff alongside Amy. Jill and [00:04:00] I sat down and I just started helping people refine their courses who were there, and I thought at the time that I was just a procrastinator, that I was lazy, that I wasn't committed enough to my own business.
[00:04:12] But I know now I'm a transformational guide, and my genius emerges through facilitating transformation with real people in real time, even if I'm using someone else's framework to do it. So I was able to get a lot more done and learn a lot more about what it takes to create a course by sitting down next to Jill and guiding people through Amy's process, which was eventually what would become Digital Course Academy.
[00:04:36] It's fascinating to look back now and realize that I was getting data all the time from my body that said, you need to go teach this live first. You need to go walk people through this transformation of creating a book and turning it into a business before you could ever create a prerecorded course on it.
[00:04:55] I just wasn't making that connection at the time, and that's what's making what I'm doing [00:05:00] now. So different. I figured out that this system was possible, that this , resident, thought leadership system with your core resonance, your content, your transformational ip.
[00:05:09] Your commercialization strategies, your connection strategies, and central platform that lead to better commercialization and, and how all of this works together? I had it down on paper, but it wasn't until I started teaching it, and especially when I started the podcast after I'd worked with some clients that I figured out that it was working.
[00:05:29] It's funny to look back at it now because no wonder I couldn't finish that course. My archetype was screaming at me, this isn't how you work. This isn't where the magic lives for you, and it doesn't mean you can't teach a course. It just means you can't teach it like this.
[00:05:41] So what's been different this time is instead of creating a course first based on the IP I was creating, I started doing one-on-one work. I started using my coaching as a testing lab to see if the system actually worked. And the more I taught it, the more I saw that it worked. [00:06:00] I was more confident to come teach it on the podcast, and that has continued to help me refine.
[00:06:04] And document the results that people are getting, the personalized results from following this system that is present in every single thought leader business I've ever seen or ever worked inside of. And now the podcast episodes that I create, write themselves. 'cause I just talk about the results that I'm seeing and the patterns that I'm seeing inside of my client calls and inside the conversations that I'm having about my work.
[00:06:27] And I have lived experience to share instead of a theory to try to explain. I didn't fail at building a course back then. I was just trying to skip the step that my archetype required and I didn't do that this time.
[00:06:41] Another client who's been really successful is a wisdom writer, has been told all along the way as she's built her business. That she's doing it wrong, that she should be doing this, that she should be doing that. And the thing that is so cool about this client is she has trusted her gut all along and has built something [00:07:00] really amazing based on her skill as a wisdom writer.
[00:07:04] She's built. A great Instagram community, all based on the amazing words that she's able to write, the carousel posts that she creates. She's defied all of the teaching out there about how you grow on Instagram 'cause she's just trusted herself, trusted her wiring, and has acted accordingly. It's worked for her and as we got into our sprint session that we just finished a little while ago, it was really cool to see and really cool to show her that because she had chosen not to copy and paste other people's strategies, or if she did, she abandoned it quickly and went back to what works for her.
[00:07:41] So much of the growth that she's experienced to this point has been a result of trusting the way that she's wired, paying attention to the data that her brain and herself are giving when she's confronted with another strategy that's working really well for someone else. It just doesn't feel right for [00:08:00] her, and so she tries it her own way, or she just abandons that strategy entirely and keeps moving forward.
[00:08:05] And she's built a really cohesive, beautiful business that continues to grow because she has trusted her own wiring, and that's been really, really cool to see. I hope that both my non-example and this client's good example of what it looks like to trust yourself, gives you some encouragement because energy is data.
[00:08:30] When something energizes you, when you find joy and satisfaction in doing something, that's important information. When something drains you, that's important information. I'm not saying you should only do things that feel easy because building a business requires discipline and commitment and doing hard things, but there's a difference between, this is really hard because it's challenging, and this is really hard because it's misaligned.
[00:08:57] When you're doing work that's aligned with your [00:09:00] archetype, it might be challenging, but you feel energized . You feel like you're accessing your deep strength. You feel like you're getting better at something you're naturally good at. When you're doing work that's misaligned with your archetype, it is actively draining.
[00:09:14] You feel like you're performing. You feel like you're pretending to be somebody you're not, and no matter how much you improve, it never feels natural. That distinction, that difference, that's the data your energy is giving you. Here's where it gets tricky, and this is really important. There's another kind of resistance and understanding the difference between these types of resistance might be one of the most critical skills you develop as an entrepreneur.
[00:09:41] Stephen Pressfield talks about this in The War of Art, which is a great book to read if you are building a business around your ideas. He talks about resistance with a capital R. Here's what he says. The level of resistance with a capital R that you feel is directly related [00:10:00] to the power of your vision and how important your project is to the evolution of your humanity and your soul.
[00:10:05] In other words, sometimes you feel massive resistance precisely because you're onto something big. Pressfield says, resistance always comes second. It has no existence on its own. It only arises in response to a creative impulse, to a dream, to a vision of something that might be your book. Your business, your impact, and the force of that type of resistance is equal and opposite to the scale of your dream.
[00:10:30] So if you have a tiny dream, tiny resistance, if you have a big dream, big resistance. And here's the big paradox. Resistance is always strongest at the finish line. So how do you know the difference between all of these types of energy signals you're getting? Here's what I think. When you know your archetype and you know how you're wired, you can more easily distinguish between misalignment, resistance, and the kind of resistance that Stephen Pressfield is [00:11:00] talking about.
[00:11:00] Misalignment. Resistance says, this doesn't fit how I work. This isn't where my genius lives. This is someone else's path that is not mine. This resistance is trying to redirect you to your natural path, but pressfield's resistance shows up precisely because you're moving forward toward aligned action on something important. That kind of resistance is terrified. You'll actually push through complete what you started and change the world because of it.
[00:11:31] So here's the key. When you understand your archetype misalignment, resistance decreases the things that are for you, become easier. Press field resistance. That might increase when you get close to the finish line, when the book is almost done, when the big thing is about to happen because you're on the right path and you're moving towards something that actually matters.
[00:11:53] And paradoxically, if you take that resistance as the compliment, it actually is, it can give you the resolution and [00:12:00] courage. You need to press through because you know you're on the right path. So. Archetype, misalignment. , The disconnect, the feeling of this just isn't working, goes away as you move down that path.
[00:12:13] But when the resistance shows up again, and you know you're aligned, take that as a compliment and keep pushing. Here's how all of this can function as your competitive advantage instead of always feeling like something you need to overcome. Getting aligned. People who are expression led archetypes, resonant orders, wisdom writers, visual thought architects, you think by expressing your ideas emerge through the natural act of creation itself.
[00:12:38] So your natural competitive advantage is content creation, but not just any content. Content starting in your medium. If you're a resonant order, you need to speak first. If you're a wisdom writer, you need to write first. If you're a visual thought architect, you need to draw and diagram first. So instead of trying to build through networking or facilitation, you actually need to create first.[00:13:00]
[00:13:00] Relationships will come to you when people discover your work, but you have to make the work first. So if you feel like the world's biggest introvert and you don't wanna walk in a room and meet people. Create consistently in your medium and let people find you. My client, Luvvie Ajayi Jones, has a prayer when she walks into a networking event that says, let my helpers find me.
[00:13:21] She is a wisdom writer. She has done the work inside her archetype. She has her words out there in the world, and people find her. It's because she's done that first. So that is the thing that's going to decrease that initial. Resistance and get you on the right path. And know that when you're doing the right thing and moving in the right direction, that that press field resistance might show up.
[00:13:44] But that's different. So that's, that's expression led archetypes, experience led archetypes. These are transformational guides, experienced facilitators, digital learning architects. You think by facilitating transformation, your ideas come through working with [00:14:00] real people. So that means your natural competitive advantage is proven methodology, but you can't prove it.
[00:14:05] In theory, you have to prove it in practice. The copy paste trap for you that's keeping you stuck is trying to build courses like I did first or a content empire first before you've walked people through transformation. If you try to write a book without testing what you're writing about, it isn't going to work.
[00:14:24] You think you're being strategic by trying to scale early, but your archetype needs to facilitate first. get in the room, create transformation, get paid to do research and development with people by coaching document what actually works. Then you can build a system. Now insight LED archetypes, strategic advisors, research innovators, category creators.
[00:14:46] You think by analyzing patterns and solving complex problems and your ideas emerge through the strategic application of those patterns of those solutions. That means your natural competitive advantage is seeing what other people can't [00:15:00] see, but you can't see patterns without input. You need problems to analyze.
[00:15:06] So the copy paste trap for you. Is trying to systematize and productize too early. You think you need to be more scalable, but your archetype needs to do the high value custom work first, your framework should support your strategic work, not replace them. Now, if you get certified in someone else's framework, and that can be your ticket into these rooms that work great, you can keep doing that or you can develop your own.
[00:15:29] But if you have resistance to building like an online course, when you're brilliant at solving a complex problem in real time, listen to yourself. That's wisdom.
[00:15:38] Lead with your genius, systemizing Your genius can come later if it even needs to. You could just do high ticket work forever and scale your impact through the work that you create with other people. Embodiment LED archetypes, principled practitioners, you think by living and applying what you learn and your ideas emerge through personal practice and [00:16:00] validation.
[00:16:00] This means your natural competitive advantage is that authentic lived wisdom. You can't teach what you haven't genuinely embodied. The copy paste trap for you is trying to teach beyond your personal expertise or waiting for perfect mastery. Before you share anything at all, you need to stay within areas where you have real validation and you need to share your ongoing journey authentically, your resistance to teaching things you haven't personally lived.
[00:16:26] That's wisdom. Your resistance to staying cl your resistance to staying silent until you're perfect. That's fear. You need to learn the difference. So here's the unlock. When you discover your archetype and build accordingly, resistance drops because you're finally on your natural path. You stop finding yourself to show up.
[00:16:48] The work still requires discipline because building anything worthwhile does, but it's the right kind of work. You stop second guessing every decision because now you have a filter. Does this align with my archetype or [00:17:00] not? It's a simple question with a clear answer. You stop comparing yourself to people who are building differently than you because you understand they're not better than you.
[00:17:08] They're just different, and their path is not your path. And here's what's beautiful. When you lean into your archetype instead of fighting it, you become more magnetic, more valuable, not less, because you're not trying to be a mediocre version of someone else. You're becoming an excellent version of yourself.
[00:17:26] But let me be really clear about something important. Understanding your archetype doesn't mean every step along the way becomes easily. There's paradox in everything, and the paradox here is. When you align with your archetype and you start moving powerfully in the right direction, you might feel more resistance because now you're not just dabbling.
[00:17:49] Now you're not just trying someone else's strategy halfheartedly, you're actually moving towards something that matters, and you're building something significant, and you're stepping into who you're meant to become. [00:18:00] And that's when the resistance that Stephen Pressfield talks about, shows up in full force.
[00:18:05] I don't mean for that to feel confusing. So think of it this way. When you're following misaligned strategies, you feel resistance because you're on the wrong path and that's your body trying to redirect you. But when you're following aligned strategies, you might also feel resistance because it's a completely D, but it's for a completely different reason.
[00:18:24] You feel it because you're on the right path, and resistance is terrified. You'll actually finish what you started because you're on mission. Pressfield says resistance is paying you a compliment. If you're aligned and you're feeling massive resistance, you're onto something big. So how do you know which type you're facing?
[00:18:44] Your archetype is your compass. It's the starting point to know how to begin walking, and your full resonant thought leadership system is the map. But it starts with that compass to point you in the right direction. If you're an expression led [00:19:00] archetype and you feel resistance to networking before you've built a body of work, that's misalignment.
[00:19:05] Listen, create first. If you're an expression led archetype and you feel resistance to hitting publish on the content you created because you're worried it's not perfect, that's press field resistance, push through, publish anyway. You know you're doing the right thing. If you're an experienced led archetype and you feel resistance to building courses before you've proven that it transforms people, that's misalignment, honor that and do the facilitation work first.
[00:19:31] But if you are an experienced led archetype and you feel resistance to actually getting in the room with clients because you're afraid they won't transform, that's press field resistance. Book the clients anyway and get in the room. If you're an insight-led archetype and you feel resistance to productizing before you've solved enough complex problems, that's misalignment.
[00:19:52] Lead with your strategic genius first. But if you're an insight-led archetype and you feel resistance to taking [00:20:00] on high stakes consulting because you're afraid you won't have the answers, nope. That's press field resistance. Take the project anyway. You will figure it out in that room. Your archetype tells you what path to take, but you still have to walk it.
[00:20:14] And the closer you get to something meaningful, the stronger the capital R resistance becomes. That's not a sign you're on the wrong path. That's a sign you're getting closer to breakthrough. So let your archetype be your compass. All of this is exactly what we explore in an archetype strategy call.
[00:20:34] 'cause once you understand this, and once that compass is pointed in the right direction, you can stop forcing strategies that drain you and start building in a way that actually works on the call. We spend 60 minutes together, you'll receive a personalized, expanded archetype report beyond the quiz that you can take for free that goes deep into your unique blend of archetypes and what that means specifically for you.
[00:20:56] The free quiz gives you your top score, but on the call we unpack how the [00:21:00] rest of the archetypes work together to create your specific unique approach. Because there's a difference in having a wisdom writer at 75% or wisdom writer at 30% with a couple of other archetypes right nearby with similar percentages that blend matters, and we spend that time mapping your archetype to your current business situation.
[00:21:18] We identified the things that are draining you, so you can figure out what you should stop doing, what's energizing you, so you know what to double down on and what your natural path looks like based on your wiring. And after the call, you get a recording and a personalized 30 day plan that tells you what to focus on next.
[00:21:35] This is a new offering. These calls are $500, and if you decide within six months that you want to work together to build out the full thought leadership system, the full map in the resonant thought leadership lab, or through a one-on-one resonant sprint, that $500 applies to your investment. Now, we've talked a lot today, but here's what I want you to remember.
[00:21:58] There are two types of [00:22:00] resistance and understanding your archetype helps you distinguish between them. Misalignment. Resistance says wrong path. You've been copying and pasting when you get aligned with your archetype and get that compass pointed in the right direction and start moving that misalignment resistance drops, but that Stephen Pressfield resistance that resistance might increase 'cause you're moving towards something that matters. You're moving towards something that might change the world. That level of resistance you feel is directly related to the power of your vision. Big capital R resistance means big dream, and when you stop trying to force yourself into someone else's mold and start building around your actual wiring, three things happen.
[00:22:44] First misalignment resistance drops. You stop feeling like you're constantly swimming upstream. Second, you build faster because you're working with your strengths instead of against them. Third, you become more valuable and more magnetic because your authentic expertise is always more compelling [00:23:00] than a manufactured version of someone else's.
[00:23:03] But here's the fourth thing that happens, that Pressfield capital R resistance might get louder, not because you're on the wrong path. You're finally on the right one. And when you understand your archetype, you can meet that resistance with confidence and you can say, I see you. I know what you are.
[00:23:20] You're showing up because I'm onto something big and I'm pushing through anyway. Understanding your archetype doesn't eliminate resistance. It helps you know when resistance is directing you to your natural path and when it's trying to keep you from it. And that distinction changes. Everything. So if you're ready to discover your archetype and learn to distinguish between these two types of resistance, I would love to work with you.
