What is The Do What Is Necessary Podcast?

Let's be honest: building a company from nothing is incredibly hard. It has been for me. I started my entrepreneurial journey at age 8. Yep, you read that right....8! Since then, I've started, run and sold multiple businesses with no partners and no funding. All my life I've had to build something from nothing, and that's what I've gotten really great at - tenacious, creative and extremely smart strategy coupled with hard work. Welcome to The Do What Is Necessary podcast—I’m your host, Andrew Moon.

Listen in as I share all the mistakes I’ve made and, more importantly, what I’ve learned from them, with no fluff, and no rose-colored glasses. The Do What Is Necessary Podcast is a show where we cut through the toxic hustle and grind mindset and dig into what it actually takes to start and grow a “calm business”. Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.

I’ll be giving unfiltered advice every week, 10 minutes per episode each. I want you to walk away from this podcast with the mindset and tools you need to be successful.

This podcast is for entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and busy professionals with a short attention span (like me)—you’ll get quick-hitting, actionable information in every single episode. If you give me your time, I promise it won't be wasted. Now let's get to work!

Life is a business owner can be
pretty fast paced to say the least.

We all know how it goes.

Problems seem to pop up at
the most inopportune times.

You finally find two
hours in between meetings.

To clear out your inbox and there it is.

Uh, not so cute.

Mole have a problem.

Peeking its head up.

Needing to be resolved right now.

Or so we think.

It's much easier in can seem more
time efficient in the short term.

To react right away.

We want to provide great customer service.

It feels good to reach for that
hammer, smash that sucker right back

in the ground, where it came from.

As quickly as possible so we can dig
ourselves back out of email jail.

Or whatever we're trying
to get accomplished.

Problem solving in business.

Can feel good.

And especially if you're like
me who loves to solve problems.

But.

Something that might be a
little bit better of a strategy.

Is process solving.

Taking the extra time to find the root
cause of the problem and develop a

process to keep it from happening again.

Yes, that's take it slower at first.

But let me tell you it can pay
big dividends down the road.

The other thing to keep in
mind is business owners.

We're go-getters we're problem
solvers by nature, and it's tempting

to wear a lot of different hats.

And especially if we're in startup mode.

We kind of have to do that.

We do a little bit, a little bit of
everything to keep the business going.

The unfortunate part of the about that,
especially if you've started a business

from scratch, is that a lot of times.

You're doing a lot of those little things.

Months or years later.

The truth is that we're, we're better
at some things than we are at others.

We get in business for something
that we're passionate about.

Our talents.

That acts as a multiplier
for our effort, even though.

Saving money can seem in the short
term by doing, wearing all the hats.

It can seem good in the short
term to be doing your social

media campaign or doing your own.

Uh, accounting doing your own QuickBooks.

But there can be a hidden cost that it,
for a lot of us, we don't really look at.

And doing things ourselves, the
things that we are giving up is the

opportunity cost of not spending time
on things that were, we are good at.

And not doing the things
that we're not so great at.

And quite frankly, we don't
want to do in the first place.

So if you feel like you're scratching
and clawing, but not making any progress.

Take a step back and refocus your efforts.

On your talents and abilities.

The things that you've been blessed to
be able to do and that you love to do.

And that you've worked hard to develop.

It'll pay off for your business and it's
going to pay off for the rest of us too.

Because we need you because we're
good at different stuff than you are.

Another thing we need to do is
understand that true impact of that

whack-a-mole business strategy.

"There's no time to plan.

I have very little time to even think."

I hear this a lot as a coach.

The whack-a-mole approach to
business management is exhausting.

I've been there.

I've done that.

It leads to frustration.

It leads to burnout.

Worse yet you get held back from reaching
your full potential as an entrepreneur.

Or worse yet.

You quit trying altogether.

So, what can you do to stop the madness?

Most business owners and entrepreneurs.

Unfortunately, don't like my answer.

But I believe that this next
step is critical for personal

and professional growth.

You must evaluate your business.

You must evaluate.

Yourself.

If you have a whack-a-mole business
strategy, it's time to assess, outline,

and implement processes and procedures
that will take you to the next level.

You can't wing it.

Preferably one that doesn't feel
like an exaggerating arcade game

that you play at the state fair.

Business leader and author.

Jim Collins says it best.

"Magic occurs when you combine
the spirit of entrepreneurial-ism

with a culture of discipline."

Or said another way "You must
systematize the predictable

and humanize the exceptional."

Consider that it's time to work on
your business so that you can grow your

business so that you can grow as a person.

Organization takes time, but it
also creates space for better

conversations, better experiences.

Which lead to more business.

Interactions have the potential
to go from regular to exceptional.

When everyday processes.

Are identified, documented, implemented,
revisited and refined on a daily basis.

When you have systems and
process thinking first.

And the likely few business owners, myself
included, we hate the nitty gritty work

of defining processes and procedures.

But let me tell you it is necessary.

Every company, whether
you're big or small.

Should have clear directives outlined
in four key areas of your business.

Business development.

Sales.

Marketing operations,
client service and finance.

We tend to evaluate the growth
of your company by that top

line, grow revenue number.

But.

Numbers don't generate a complete report.

Of the health of your
company or your potential.

As a company.

Revenue that just shows
us external growth.

However external growth is not
possible without internal growth.

Without growth of you
as the business owner.

And your people.

Initiatives that are focused on
internal growth inside your company.

May not be immediate revenue generators.

But without them, your longterm.

Success is undermined.

You're going to shortchange yourself.

This key point I want to take away with.

Internal growth is necessary and
is the essence of your business.

It happens when employees embrace
your vision for your company.

It happens when hours are applied to the
implementation of process and procedures

that ultimately make work easier.

And it happens when client experiences
are consistently made exceptional.

When you have raving fans.

If you're still on the fence about the
value of investing time in your business.

Go ahead and continue
to play whack-a-mole.

After all arcade games are fun.

At least while your money lasts.

But if you're interested
in stopping the madness.

It's time to start looking on the inside.

Of your business.

Of your books.

Of your daily routines.

And most of all of your heart.

Where is your, why?

Believe me.

It'll be time well spent.
