It is 20 hours past midnight on another beautiful sunny winter day here in Gwangju, and whether or not that cold reality is belied by the great orb’s warmth, we head for warmer climes this evening, dyed that famous Argentine sky blue as December 15, 2021. This is Danno as always as ever from studio 2, GFN HQ in Downtown Gwangju, how do you do? It is our Round Trip Wednesday evening and Lizz Kalo once again is aboard for the flight, delineated as flight TD055. So this evening we’ll be rocking some old & new from Argentina, which is a pioneering country in so many forms of music for most of our first hour and all of parts 3 & 4. It must be additionally noted that a great documentary on Netflix came out this year called Break It All, on which Argentina’s amazing rock scene features prominently. We’ll talk more about that as we go over the vintage vibes in both hours. However, for right now, it’s time to remember the history, as there’s always something Neil Young to discuss in history and today is no different. This is The Drop.
Neil Young – Cinnamon Girl
The Drop continues to let both the KTX bound for Incheon International Airport and the music coast us along, watching the the countryside flash by in its icy repose. What’s happening tonight, Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno on the mic here in studio 2, GFN HQ, downtown Gwangju ready to fly to Buenos Aires, which for those of you in the geographically challenged category is in Argentina. Great music new & old to go over in both hours tonight, and Lizz Kalo will join us aboard flight TD 055 shortly!
That was Neil Young with Cinnamon Girl to start things off tonight, and although we must admit the TIGHT (or) feature for tonight’s history is not focused on that song, we had to get something sweet but a little more upbeat for tonight’s starter.
It was on this date in 1965 that a very young Neil recorded his first version of Sugar Mountain at a demo session for Elektra Records in NYC. That specific version would later appear on The Archives vol 1, released in the early 1970’s.
Young originally wrote the song on his 19th birthday, which are reminisces on his youth in Winnipeg. The song would interestingly be released as the b-side to Cinnamon Girl later on in 1970, after being released as the b-side to The Loner the year prior as well.
So, a song that certainly has had its miles travelled, but never put out as part of a proper full-length until Decade was released in 1977. The song was actually recorded live on November 10, 1968 at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, MI for those out there keeping score.
#9870, @gfnthedrop, podcast details, etc.
Next block, we’ll begin our warm-up tour of Argentina with the first in our triforce of classic Latin rock bands out of that country down by the Tierra del Fuego, that would be Manal, and after that we got Los Aggrotones along with our main main Argentayne lass of class Pilar Padin to finish. We’ll discuss all of these after the sound waves crash ashore, but for now this is The Drop on your sky blue and white Round Trip Wednesday night.

The Drop returns tonight after the first block on our Round Trip Wednesday. Lizz Kalo joins us after 9pm on flight TD 055 heading for Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. Until the hour & into the final bits of part 4 we’re highlighting some of the great bands out of Argentina tonight both old & new, so let’s get to the recap of that first triangle of tunes, shall we?
Manal – Casa Con Diez Pinos (…great tune meaning the house of 10 pines, this cut came out on the band’s self-titled debut in 1970. Manal are noted along with Los Gatos & Almendra as the so-called Holy Trinity of early Latin & Argentine rock, whose influence went all over Latin America at the time, inspiring hundreds of artists after them.)
Los Aggrotones – El Reggae Es Algo Serio (…a band that mostly describes themselves as an acid jazz ensemble, they hail from the capital in Buenos Aires & this tune was released on an album from 2014 called 10 Reggae Shots, and the title means reggae is something serious, en serio.)
Pilar Padin - Porvenir (…a great up-and-coming singer-songwriter also from El Capital Buenos Aires. She released her debut album last year called Desde las Sombras which means From The Shadows. We’ll talk more about Pilar and her wonderfully brave appearance on our show last year in November more when we play another seleccion en el parte quatro.)
Moving along to the end of the first fourth tonight, we’ll bop another great friend of the show in Florencia Andrada with a cut called El Imperio or The Empire and we’ll finish with Los Negronis and a favorite joint of ours called Ringo. THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip to Buenos Aires Wednesday night.
Florencia Andrada – El Imperio
Los Negronis – Ringo

The Drop is back after the first quarter jump departing at 9pm sharp on flight TD055 bound for Buenos Aires in our 2nd half this evening, and the lovely, indomitable Lizz Kalo will be joining us after 9pm. Danno here waiting in line to check in with all the other people barely able to conceal their rage & impatience, and we just heard…
Delfina Campos – El Astronauta (…lovely tune, a standalone single put out earlier this year in the very early part after the calendar flipped. The artist has only put out a few tunes in her short career dating back to 2018, but not a lot in the way of information on background, etc. Definitely interested to hear more though.)
Clara Cava – Dias de Paja (…another interesting up-and-coming indie artist out of the Argentine capital. This tune meaning Days of Straw dropped on her 2020 album in March which we featured on our last trip right after it came out, and it’s so nice we had to play it twice. If you’d like to see more, she also did a Sofar Sounds live show in Buenos Aires that can be watched on the great tube.)
Moving along SM, #9870, podcast let us know …
Next block we’ll continue with the slow burn but go back a ways at least for the first couple of tunes. First up we got Piero to be followed by Los Gatos & finishing with the indomitable comedy goddess Juana Molina. We’ll of course talk about all of this after we throw them into the atmosphere to bounce back, but for now THIS is The Drop on your Round Trip Wednesday to Argentina.

The Drop has arrived at the gate for the flight way too early even with all the biological and security pass throughs, but all the better to get a pre-flight nip of whiskey. Danno here not looking forward to the flight and all that sitting around, but definitely looking forward to Buenos Aires which is a beautiful, very European-styled city in South America. For now we just continued with some old & new from the great sky blue & white nation of the far south, so let’s recap it for you...
Piero – Fumemos un Cigarillo (…this tune meaning let’s have a smoke appeared on the 1969 album Mi Viejo or My Old Man. Full name Piero de Bendictis, he was actually born in Italy but grew up in Argentina & achieved fame there. He has released a positive slew of albums during his long career, with Mi Viejo being his first and America being his most recent in 2016.)
Los Gatos – Viento, Dile a la Lluvia (…or as the Argentines say it “la zjuvia”. This classic was the title track to the band’s 2nd studio album, with both this LP and the band’s debut dropping that same year. This would be the 2nd in our Holy Trinity early Argentine rock bands & more to come in hour 2. The title by the way means wind, tell the rain.)
Juana Molina - Eras (…this tune was a lead single to the singer-songwriter’s 2013 album Wednesday the 21st, and was given a huge spotlight by Pitchfork as a “Best New Track” for that week. Now approaching 60 years of age this year, she’s known as a pioneer of “folktronica,” a blend of folk & electronic sounds along with other elements.)
Okay, so final call to board just popped over the PA en ingles y espanol along with like 4 other languages, so we gotta jet literally. We’ll close with the third in our Holy Trinity of early Argentine rock pioneers in Almendra and this cut is called A Estos Hombres or To These Sad Men, which will complete the triad before we get to our seats. THIS is The Drop bound for the sky blue realm of Argentina on your Round Trip Wednesday, and it is indeed halftime.
Almendra – A Estos Hombres Tristes
