The Lion Counseling Podcast helps men escape the cages that hold them back and become the Lions they were created to be. It exists to help men obtain success, purpose, happiness, and peace in their career and personal lives. The podcast is hosted by the founder of Lion Counseling, Mark Odland (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified EMDR Therapist), and Zack Carter (Counselor and Coach with Lion Counseling). In their podcasts, they address a variety of topics relevant to men, including: mental health, relationships, masculinity, faith, success, business, and self-improvement.
One idea from Muster that I think applies far beyond business is this, clarity before depth. Before you go deep into solving a problem, you have to be clear about what that problem that you're actually solving is. And it sounds obvious, but most people skip right over it. They feel pressure, frustration, failure, and they immediately start trying to fix something. High performing men especially do this.
Mark Odland:They move fast. They execute. They solve. It's part of what makes them successful. But when they misdiagnose the problem, their speed works against them.
Mark Odland:They solve the wrong problem faster. A man says, I need more discipline. Maybe. But maybe the real issue is stress or anxiety. A man says, I need better time management.
Mark Odland:Maybe. But maybe the real issue is avoidance. A man says, my wife is too emotional. Maybe there's a communication issue. But maybe the real issue is that he becomes defensive whenever she expresses pain.
Mark Odland:A man says my team is not executing. Maybe they need better systems. But maybe the real issue is that they do not trust him enough to be honest. If you misdiagnose the problem, you can work extremely hard and stay stuck. This is why clarity matters.
Mark Odland:And in my work with high performing men, one of the first things we do is slow down enough to ask, what is actually happening here? Is this a skill issue, a structure issue, a communication issue, a relationship issue, or is it an internal pattern that keeps hijacking the man under pressure? Those are different problems, and they require different solutions. You don't solve trauma with a better calendar. You don't solve shame with a new morning routine.
Mark Odland:You don't solve emotional shutdown with another productivity hack, and you don't solve avoidance by yelling at yourself to be more disciplined. Sometimes sometimes the problem is deeper. And when it is deeper, the solution has to be deeper too. This is not typical therapy in the way that many men imagine therapy. It's not sitting around without direction.
Mark Odland:It's not endless venting. It's not making excuses either. It's a structured process of identifying what is actually interfering with a man's ability to lead, connect, decide, and execute. And that's why I like the phrase clarity before depth. Do not go deep into the wrong problem.
Mark Odland:Get clear first, then go as deep as necessary. At Lion Counseling, I help men identify the real issue underneath the visible issue. Because once you're solving the right problem, progress becomes much more direct. If you're a successful man, but you're stuck in a recurring pattern that you can't seem to solve, you can book a Clarity Call @escapethecagenow.com. Thanks.
