And here’s today’s news from Rail Technology Magazine in association with TransCity Rail – on Friday the 21st June 2024.

Siemens Mobility and Freightliner have agreed a pioneering partnership to fit ETCS to Freightliner’s First-in-Class (FiC) locomotive 66591.
The partnership will see the new digital signalling equipment retrofitted to the Class 66V locomotive. In an industry first, Freightliner will independently install ETCS on its own locomotive at the company’s Leeds Midland Road Vehicle Maintenance Facility.
The Siemens Mobility team will work closely with Freightliner’s ERTMS engineers and fitment team, having already worked together with the engineers during the design and installation processes.
Locomotive 66591 is the first of hundreds of freight trains that will be fitted with ETCS as part of the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), which forms the foundation of the progressive roll out of digital signalling in the UK.

Alstom has signed a contract with Mercitalia Rail to supply 70 Traxx Universal locomotives and 12 years of full maintenance services.
The contract is worth around €323 million and includes the option for an additional 30 vehicles and an extension to the duration of the maintenance services.
Traxx Universal is an advanced four-axle locomotive platform which offers high energy efficiency and traction capacity.
Some of the trains will also be fitted with last mile technology, which enables a seamless transition from line haul traction into non-electrified lines.
With this contract, the number of Traxx Universal trains in Italy will now exceed 300. To accommodate this growth, technicians will benefit from a new local hub specialised in digital maintenance, which will capture data and monitor the locomotives in real time.
This will allow maintenance and minor interventions to be carried out at over 10 sites across the country, ensuring maximum fleet performance.
