Facts
The Who – A Quick One While He’s Away
- Yesterday in 1969, The Who released Tommy, a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, or so the big hit from the LP Pinball Wizard says, which might just be the first song to reach a trillion spins on commercial classic rock radio, I’ll have to check on that little factoid.
- Tommy (1969) is a lavish concept album from British rock band The Who, which spreads across two LPs. Unusual for a record by a British act, Tommy is released in the US a week earlier than in the UK - due to problems with the production of the album cover. The record is a critical and commercial success, eventually being certified double platinum in the US and selling more than 20 million copies worldwide. It also introduces a new genre: Rock Opera.
- the album is later developed into an acclaimed movie by Ken Russell in 1975. The cinematic version features new, re-recorded versions of the album's songs as well as some additional Townshend compositions, all of which are performed by the actors themselves. A stage musical version is also developed in 1992. Surprisingly, it takes until 1994 for a Tommy-themed pinball machine to appear, featuring imagery and sounds from the Broadway production.
Young Winona – Sadistic
- The latest single from Poor Man Records (big up to Amber Bollinger and Alex Dezen of Broken Baby). This one comes from our favorite Kiwis in LA, Young Winona, lead by another of our super faves Cassie Gaffney.
- If not familiar with the band, do check more of their past releases, which are just amazing, especially LA Waste.
Nick Leng – Spirals
- Another tune out of LA here from an artist also from the southern hemisphere, this time South Africa.
- This is the title track to the artist’s latest LP, which drops on July 22 via SOTA.
- As you heard right there, this album is shaping up as a meandering, shapeshifting bit of everything, very personal stuff written during the heights of the pandemic.
KALI – Insomnia
- Another favorite of ours on this show, a young artist still only 17 true name Kali Flanagan. Big announcement here as with this release, KALI announced a new EP called Maltman and Effie, which is due out this summer.
- KALI also released this joint then played a show with Weyes Blood last week in LA.
Arjuna Oakes – Safe Way To Fall
- Wellington, NZ-based Arjuna Oakes is out with another single this weekend, this one also a super slow burner which to me personally is the artist’s best stuff. This one has a great build-up quality, so do have a bit of patience.
- The song has a great sentiment behind it, stating that to be vulnerable is to in fact be strong. Always positive to hear something from Arjuna Oakes, big up to our man down in NZ!
Sefi Zisling – Welcome Sunset
- Taking it over to Israel to finish and not sure if this will get airtime on the regular radio show, but our main man in Tel Aviv is out with this jazzy gem as of last week via Tru Thoughts UK.
- An amazing Roy Hargrove-style arrangement, this is “a love letter to the crossroads between funk, soul and jazz.” So there you go…

Vansire - Bryn Mawr All-Stars (3.50)
Vansire has finally given us their newest album. On the grandly-titled The Modern Western World, Minnesota’s Vansire gives us nineteen very brief tracks adding up to under forty-seven minutes of music, jumping across genres with fluidity and lyrically traveling through all parts of the US and occasionally beyond, hearing a bit of French, Japanese, and Korean. Bryn Mawr All-Stars gives us a kick of jazz and stars as the 10th track of the album.

Peaness - Girl Just Relax (3.26)
Chester indie-punk trio Peaness have been one of the UK’s loved DIY prospects since 2015, sporting undoubtedly one of the best band names to ever grace a T-shirt. But only now are they releasing their debut full-length album, World Full Of Worry .As the title suggests, it’s an album that’s lyrically full of anxiety, reflecting the personal and societal battering we’ve all taken over the last two years. Specifically, Girl Just Relax urges the listener to stop comparing their progress with others.

Panda Riot - 1000% (3.27)
Ahead of their newest record, Extra Cosmic’s release, the band shared their comeback single, “E.S.P.” earlier this year, and today they’re back with another new release, “1000%,”. As the band explains, “1000% is a song about endless desire—about wanting everything all at once even if it destroys you. It expresses an all-consuming, self-destructive need that makes you want to burn everything down and hold it all forever at the same time.”

Alice Merton - Loveback (3.38)
Alice Merton strides towards the June 17th release of their second album ‘S.I.D.E.S.’ by sharing the new song ‘Loveback’.‘Loveback’ talks about waking up one day and realizing someone has stolen a part of you that you want back. It was the realization that you didn’t ‘need’ anyone to exist. You were never dependent on anyone or anything, even if it at times felt like it. A good message we can all learn from

Clean Cut Kid - Little Black Space (3.02)
Clean Cut Kid have released their new single Little Black Space, taken from their forthcoming fourth album Hiss. The band explains, “Little Black Space is an observation dressed up as a break up tune. It’s about something we noticed when the people we love were having struggles with their mental health. It’s like their eyes look flat, 2D, or even hollow. Everything they’re saying and doing is the same except for that ‘little black space’,”

Mt. Joy - Evergreen (2.52)
On the heels of announcing their 2022 third full-length offering, Orange Blood, which is set to release on June 17th, Mt. Joy has released “Evergreen.”The track’s accompanying music video stars The Office star Creed Bratton, a personal friend of the band who last fall, joined the band on stage at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles.

Pale Waves - Lies (2.51)
Pale Waves dropped the tune earlier this month, sharing the first righteous single from their forthcoming album Unwanted, due out August 12.“Lies” weaponizes brutal honesty and blasting riffs to strike back at an old flame who tore through Baron-Gracie’s heart — and her confidence. Encapsulated with lies, she strikes back with our tune to the menace! We love a good hate song, don't we all?

LACES - Jersey Shore (3.04)
LACES captures those feelings of still being a kid at heart while dealing with the difficulties of adulthood in her recently released LP Super Weirdo. With Jersey Shore, LACES takes us back to the fun and lighthearted side of memories. This song tells us what life on the Jersey Shore meant for them.

ViVii - It's Probably Me (3.52)
ViVii is a Swedish indie-pop trio, self-described as a "music project based in Stockholm". ViVii is composed of married couple Emil and Caroline Jonsson, alongside Anders Eckborn. Late 80s vinyl records, indie pop gems, old VHS cassettes, and even classical music are just some of the trio’s influences; and nothing's different with this one.

mxmtoon - dizzy (2.55)
Dizzy is the 9th track to mxmtoon's newest album Rising! Yes she is out and about. rising is the sophomore album by mxmtoon, representing the artists complications and happiness of growing up since their hit song Prom Dress. Say Sue Me - Still Here (4.10)
As the second track to their newest album, The Last Thing Left, it is said the songs were self-recorded and self-produced during lockdown at the band's own Busan studio. This album has the theme of some realization, eventually the realization of love. Love in relationships, love for oneself, and the ultimate love gained after realizing those two things.

Julia Jacklin - Lydia Wears A Cross (4.02)
On this contemplative opening song from her third album, Pre-Pleasure, the Australian singer-songwriter looks back on her Catholic school days. Rather than disavowing her much more eager young self with “Lydia Wears a Cross,” Jacklin takes a loving approach, also saying "I’d be a believer if it was all just song and dance,” .

JANNABI - ASTEARSGOBY (3.56)
The title of this song in Korean originally translates to "goodbye sadness". ASTEARSGOBY is the last track to their newest EP, Jannabi's small Pieces II: GRIPPIN'THEGREEN. This EP is a continuation of Small Pieces I from 2020. There are no announcements of another, butso far I appreciate the melow flow of this EP.

There’s Talk - Lightleak (3.54)
There’s Talk is an Oakland-based dream-pop outfit who have recently released their majestic new single, “Lightleak.”About the song the band adds: this song is about picking up the pieces of yourself after you’ve overcome something devastating. when you start to feel hopeful and see the light on the other side. encouraging, nostalgic dream pop for a younger self.

2danji - wave (3.05)
2danji (2단지) is a South Korean singer. He debuted in 2016 with the mini-album 즈음. Wave itself is the third track to their latest mini album W. Now, the name is quite interesting. 2danji means the 2 complex of apartment buildings. Apparently the singer had moved so many times theyve found the word complex familiar. The covers of the albums are photos taken by the artists themselves.

Cat Ryan - Rex Mundi (2.12)
The Newcastle-based art rock band Cat Ryan returned last week with their first new music in two years. ‘Rex Mundi‘ is a dreamy, yet upbeat slice of indie-pop. Mary-Anne of Cat Ryan has said: “‘Rex Mundi’ came to fruition whilst I was visiting my family’s remote farm in rural Ireland. In terms of the lyrics, these came about after visiting my family nearby, where I learned that they’d recently got a new greyhound named ‘Rex Mundi’, which instantly resonated with me
