Welcome, dear listeners, and thank you for joining us on this journey through the Tanya, the foundational work of Chabad Chassidus by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. Today, we delve into a passage that speaks to the heart of human experience—the struggle between the animal soul and the divine soul within each of us.
In the Tanya, it is taught that every individual possesses two souls: an animal soul that is drawn to earthly desires and a divine soul that seeks to connect with G-d and fulfill a higher purpose. The animal soul, originating from the kelipot and sitra achra, is inherently self-centered and driven by instinctual needs. It is concerned primarily with physical survival and pleasure. On the other hand, the divine soul stems from holiness, exuding selflessness and an innate drive to perform mitzvot and engage in Torah study.
The daily struggle is not to vanquish the animal soul but to harness and elevate it. When you eat, do so not only to satisfy hunger but to gain strength for serving G-d. When you engage in business, aim not solely for personal gain but to increase your ability to give charity and support Torah learning. In this way, the mundane becomes holy, and every action becomes an opportunity for spiritual growth.
This teaching is highly relatable to our everyday lives. We constantly face decisions where we can choose to act on impulse or with purpose. By remembering the dual nature of our existence, we can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary and live a life infused with deeper meaning and connection to the Divine.
Thank you for tuning in, and let's carry this message with us as we go about our day, elevating each moment with intention and purpose. This podcast was produced and sponsored by Daniel Aharonoff.
