I.
It is 20 hours past midnight after a wistfully clear and crisp day, and it is once again time to break out the funk punk soul rock for this week, this one marked into the cosmos as November 3, 2022. Danno here and of course we are continuing in our mourning period or aedo shegak this week, although mainly as we do every night we’re just trying to help you forget your troubles on the main. However, as we’ve done to open the show this week, we dedicate our first song to the tragedy in Itaewon but tonight we dedicate it to those left behind as we’re all struggling to power through even though it seems like too much to deal with. Times of loss are extra difficult and just heartbreaking, but if you feel like you’re falling down yourself we must remind you once again there are resources out there which we’d be glad to point you to if you reach out. For our starter tonight, we send power to you still here courtesy of Kelly Finnigan. THIS is The Drop.
Kelly Finnigan – Trouble
Our Sampled & AMPED Thursday night has officially commenced as our mourning period continues after the tragic events of Saturday night. Danno here, trying to help you power through with the programming this week as sometimes it feels harder to be left behind than to leave, and that opener was dedicated to all of us still here struggling to come to grips with this disaster.
That was a tune left off Kelly Finnigan’s debut solo LP in 2019. The album was named The Tales People Tell, and that b side later released as a single was titled Trouble. Despite the bright tone of the song, Finnigan here deals with both the wrong paths people take but mainly his own demons which sometimes feel as if they’re pulling him down with them. However, in the end his own spirit and the power of love pulls him through.
A key message for this week as we’re all dealing with this unbelievable calamity in our own ways. Don’t let things get you too down, you gotta keep on keepin’ on. But sometimes you can’t do it alone, so if you need somebody to talk to there are resources out there we’d be glad to point you to. Get help if you need it, as this is indeed the time to reach out to somebody, even if it’s me.
Just a quick reminder…#9870 (50/100)…stream
We have a few new tunes from some super favorites coming up as our Sampled funk & soul night starts properly with the new stuff. The mad ladies out of Brooklyn Say She She have a new single out called Weak, which is right on the heels of their debut album dropping called Prism, and we also have a pair of new flavors from Lee Fields and Claire Davis to follow that up and finish at the rim strong. We shall of course read out the scoreline after the play is over, but for now THIS is The Drop on your Thursday night funk & soul sesh.
____
The Drop returns tonight on our Sampled & AMPED Thursday night, we just got our first taste of the new stuff just out this past week to begin things properly with the funk & soul portion of programming today. Danno here rolling solo presently, but I shall be joined by Dan Lloyd after we hit the top of the clock again for our AMPED feature. Let’s read out what just went into the air for now, though…
Say She She – Weak (… right on the heels of their debut album Prism dropping, the ladies from NYC get very traditionally soulful and funky on that cut. If you have not checked out Prism, do that and big up to the ladies for joining us on the show that was good stuff.)
Lee Fields – Two Jobs (…just dropped last Friday is the latest LP from the most stylishly dressed man anywhere, the legendary Lee Fields. Sentimental Fool is out via Daptone Records, so go and check that out if you haven’t yet. Big up to Lee Fields, just a total legend.)
Claire Davis – Long Gone (…one of our favorite recent discoveries is this artist who hails from Toronto. This song is a pretty short little number but it packs a major punch, and is also available as a 7” single courtesy of LRK Records, shouts to that crew doing it right as well.)
Quick …#9870, social media.
Okee, so we have a few more quick hitters to rock more in the hip-hop realm to close the first quarter this evening. Up next we have a couple joints from Cookin’ Soul & MC Melodee’s new album called BONAFIDE. Up first is Aces In My Zone and we’ll go with Sun Goddess to wrap up the double play. After that we have a new Jungle remix of a JVKE original that just dropped called golden hour, and that is gonna bring in the buzzer to take us to quarter two tonight. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
Cookin’ Soul & MC Melodee – Aces In My Zone
Cookin’ Soul & MC Melodee – Sun Goddess
JVKE – golden hour (Jungle remix)

II.
Back at it here in part 2 on our Sampled funk & soul first hour tonight, Danno here doing a somewhat subdued radio thing this week but mainly working on keeping your mind off your troubles. Dan Lloyd will be back for his AMPED feature in hour 2 to try & continue doing the same. Let’s talk for now about the balloons we just sent into the cosmos, that was...
Yvonne Chaka Chaka feat Hugh Masekela & Oliver Mtukudzi – Murume Mukuru (Tapera) (…posthumous features for both of the latter, this vocal interpretation is based on the Mtukudzi original Tapera, which was dropped in 2002. Lovely jazz haze and vintage vocals on the finished product here though, and great to see the departed artists still influencing current music.)
Orions Belte feat Kim Age Furuhaug – Mollevalsen (…this tune is actually the 2nd single from the featured artist’s debut solo album which drops in November I believe on the 18th. All the artists are out of Norway, and Orions Belte just seems to be rocking it more and more left field as time goes on. Great band big up to all involved on this tune and the album.)
So we have a trio of cuts to feature up next and all three of these artists are big time favorites here at Drop Central, especially the leadoff man. Our main soul Russki in LA Mark Evich is back with a new track called Pressure, and then we have a couple more fresh cuts from Swatkins and 30/70, all of which we’ll discuss side opposite the swerve. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.
__________
The Drop continues inexorably towards the finality of the first half tonight. Danno here doing my thing, and thankfully so, and we hope you find yourself doing well tonight as always, especially given the shadows that surround us. Now, as to that last block, a trio of favorites just let their new stuff into the sky, so let’s run it down…
Mark Evich – Pressure (…an artist we had on the show back in April and a dude who’s given us so much support. The artist for those unaware is based in LA but originally out of Russia, and it must be duly noted always fighting the good fight which is not easy. Here Evich is talking about the toll that pressure takes, and that is certainly something we can all identify with, creative or not.)
Swatkins – Don’t Tell You That Enough (…this is an artist we’ve been avidly following for a while now, and we finally have their debut album Friends and Other Necessities which dropped in full on Friday. Swatkins is somebody you’ve definitely heard on other albums though, and congrats to the artist on this important debut LP.)
30/70 – ALL 4 U (Radio Edit) (…the latest right here from the quintet out of Melbourne right here, and another favorite here at Drop Central. This is a 7” single that just dropped Friday, with the radio edit on the b side and the OG cut on the A.)
Now, we have a bit of real estate before the jump and once again Zero 7 saves the day to take us away in all the right ways. Our final tune is a new remix from the UK-based duo of a tune called Care by Memblem & Byulah, and we’ll let that slow builder ride and then buck all the way past halftime in your mind. This is The Drop and we’ll catch you on the flip momentarily.
Memblem & Byulah – Care (Zero 7 remix)

Iggy Pop – Frenzy
Last week, Iggy Pop announced he’d recently signed with producer Andrew Watt’s Atlantic Records imprint Gold Tooth Records. “I’m the guy with no shirt who rocks; Andrew and Gold Tooth get that, and we made a record together the old-fashioned way,” Pop said in a statement at the time. “The players are guys I’ve known since they were kids and the music will beat the shit out of you. Have a great day.” Pop’s first project with Watt? Well, there’s a new solo album in the works — the follow-up to 2019’s Free. Now, Pop is sharing a new song from said project called “Frenzy.”
“Being stalked by a socio is a great way to fire up the blood,” Pop says of the ripping “Frenzy,” which also features Watt on guitar/background vocals, Duff McKagan on bass, and Chad Smith on drums.

Crosses – Vivien
Deftones singer Chino Moreno and producer/multi-instrumentalist Shaun Lopez brought back their ††† (Crosses) project last Christmas Eve with a cover of “Goodbye Horses” by Q Lazzarus — their first release since 2014. In March, they followed up that cover with a pair of originals, “Initiation” and “Protection.” Now they’re back with the lead single from a new EP (December 9)

The new ††† release PERMANENT.RADIENT comprises six songs, none of which are “Initiation” and “Protection.” One of them is “Vivien,” out today with a vivid video directed by Lopez and Lorenzo Diego Carrera. Musically it’s the sound of Moreno leaning hard into his Depeche Mode influence, filtered through his own personal brand of dark and dangerous glamor.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Astroturf
New album (6th of the year, and 3rd of October) Changes came out last week.
King Gizzard started working on Changes way back in 2017. Originally it was supposed to be the fifth and final album they released that year, a single album-length song toggling between two keys that, per bandleader Stu Mackenzie, really shouldn’t work together. But Mackenzie ultimately decided Changes needed more work, so they let it marinate and evolve indefinitely. Over the course of half a decade, the band kept returning to “Change,” the album’s central song, applying their increasingly seasoned musicianship to the project. Eventually several other songs sprouted from “Change,” incorporating bits and pieces of the original composition. Finally, five years later, it’s ready for release.

Civic – End of the Line
Melbourne punk band Civic has announced the follow-up to their 2021 debut album Future Forecast. Taken By Force will be out in February, and they’re sharing a lead single, “End Of The Line,” which has a music video directed by James Gorter.
Opening up about “End Of The Line,” singer Jim McCullough says, “I wrote that song about a solo trip I took around Europe in my early 20s, and the anxiety of realising I had no one to protect me but myself.” McCullough adds that “End Of The Line” is meant to acknowledge one’s mortality and reflects on “finding peace in a chaotic moment that you have no control over.”

Dead Kennedys – Government Flu
A renowned drummer for rock bands the Dead Kennedys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers has died after an accidental fall at his home.
DH Peligro, whose legal name was Darren Henley, was 63.
The Dead Kennedys announced Peligro’s death in an Instagram post on Saturday. Peligro had died from head trauma resulting from a fall at his home in Los Angeles, according to that post, which cited information provided by police.
Details on funeral arrangements for Peligro were pending as of Monday, but the band said they would be announced in the coming days.
Peligro had been a staple in the bustling San Francisco and Los Angeles music communities since 1978. He drummed for the Dead Kennedys from 1981 until the legendary punk outfit broke up in 1986 and then again after it reformed in 2001. He also spent some time on the kit for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and started his own band, Peligro, for whom he sang and played guitar on three albums.

Jerry Lee Lewis – Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On
Jerry Lee Lewis, the notorious singer behind Great Balls of Fire, has died aged 87, his agent has confirmed.
One of the last survivors of rock 'n' roll's golden age, his life was also marred by scandal and violence.
His career was briefly halted when, aged 22, he married his 13-year-old cousin Myra Gale Brown.
Lewis's agent described him as "perhaps the last true, great icon of the birth of rock'n'roll".

In a statement, Lewis's publicist Zach Farnum said: "He was there at the beginning, with Elvis, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Carl Perkins, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, and the rest, and watched them fade away one by one till it was him alone to bear witness, and sing of the birth of rock'n'roll."
Lewis passed away at his home in Desoto County, Mississippi, with his seventh wife, Judith, by his side, his publicist said.
The news of his death comes days after a hoax announcement of his death was reported by gossip website TMZ.
Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones led the tributes to Lewis, tweeting: "R.I.P. JLL the KILLER - What a man."
"God bless Jerry lee Lewis, peace and love to all his family," said Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.
Sir Elton John, who says his love of the piano was influenced by Lewis, wrote on his Instagram page: "Without Jerry Lee Lewis, I wouldn't have become who I am today. He was groundbreaking and exciting, and he pulverised the piano.
"A brilliant singer too. Thank you for your trailblazing inspiration and all the rock 'n' roll memories," he added, sharing a photograph of the two of them sitting together.
The Telegraph's Neil McCormick described Lewis as "the most dangerous man in rock'n'roll... he was a gun-toting, fire-starting ball of trouble. He was also the most authentic rocker who ever lived".

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Pretty Boy
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are back with a new single, “Pretty Boy.” It’ll appear on a new album that’s due out next year, though details on that have yet to be announced. The track was co-produced with Paul “Strangeboy” Stacey, and it features guitar-playing from Johnny Marr.
“For this new record it was the first thing I wrote, the first thing I demoed and the first thing I finished, so it’s only right that it’s the first thing people get to hear,” Gallagher said in a statement. “Massive shout out to my mainest man Johnny Marr for taking it somewhere special. Oh… and watch out for a cameo from me in the video… first one to spot me wins a bag of Flamin’ Hot Wotsits Giants!!”

Disturbed – Divisive
Disturbed have unveiled the title track from their upcoming album, Divisive, which arrives on November 18th. The song is classic Disturbed, with crunchy riffs, David Draiman’s powerful vocals, and a soaring, melodic chorus.
Speaking about the theme of the song in a press release, Draiman explained, “The title track and the title itself are indicative of the incredibly fucked up state of things we are living in. It’s about how hyper-polarity has influenced everything people do in life.”
He continued, “People are addicted to outrage. They’re addicted to finding the next thing that will piss them off so they can rave about it on social media. Everything negative was given a shot of steroids.”
Guitarist Dan Donegan added, “David was in the room listening to me play the riff, and he fell in love with it instantly. It was one of the early musical ideas. It’s fun to be face-to-face, because we can feed off of each other and we see the level of excitement.”

Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – Parasite
Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes have unleashed a killer new single.
The frontman says that the infectious (literally) Parasite was “conceived on a particularly brutal trip to the seaside where both Dean and I were in a difficult time in our lives and feeling low. It rained for a week straight and I visited Beachy Head every day and I walked the beaches below the cliff and stared at the sea. I spent hours on the phone to various friends around the world and listened to their relationship problems but I had no words of comfort, no solutions to find. Instead, I just listened and I soaked it up. The collective witnessed horrors of the worldwide dating pool seemed to mirror experiences closer to home. On the last day of the trip at midnight I began writing and by 3am a new Parasite had been discovered.”
The Rattlesnakes will be headlining the Underworld from December 6 – 8, with Frank enthusing of the recently-announced intimate gigs: “The Underworld is a legendary London venue; I grew up going to shows there as a kid and saw some of my favourite bands play shows there that changed my life and shaped who I was as a performer. From playing there with Gallows in 2005, to playing Pure Love’s final show there in 2014 and then selling it out a year later with Rattlesnakes, it feels fitting to return to one of the greatest punk rock and metal venues not only in London, but the world to close out 2022 and round off a month of gigs with Rattlesnakes.”

Kings of Chaos – Judgment Day
For a decade, Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum has served as a ringleader for a bunch of rock ‘n’ roll all-stars as part of a collective once known as the Rock N Roll All-Stars but now known as the Kings Of Chaos. Kings Of Chaos has had a whole lot of people cycle in and out through their live performances over the years, but so far they’ve only released one recorded song, a cover of Deep Purple’s “Never Before” on a tribute album to that band.
But today Kings Of Chaos has released its first official single, “Judgement Day,” and it’s home to a reunion of fellow hard rock supergroup Velvet Revolver, which featured Sorum in addition to Slash, Dave Kushner, and Duff McKagan. All four had a hand in “Judgement Day,” and it’ll appear on Kings Of Chaos’ debut album, which is set for release in autumn or winter of 2023.

Hundred Reasons – Glorious Sunset
Hundred Reasons have returned with a brilliant new single, and news of their first new album in 15 years.
Both are called Glorious Sunset, with the single out now (listen below) and the record due out on February 24, 2023 via SO Recordings.
Says vocalist Colin Doran of the band’s return and how new music initially came about: “When we started writing again it was really important that we did not go back to any material that had been cut previously. It all had to be completely new. We started writing just before COVID and got together sporadically as and when we could to write and demo which was not our usual way. We would normally be in a room together for the most part but this time it was not always possible. Larry and I would write, then Andy and Larry would write and then I would join the session later in the day – I have a day job – but we were all super happy with what was coming out. This was a deal breaker for all as if we were putting out new material it had to be amazing.”
He adds: “This album isn’t something we felt we had to do. We simply arrived at a position where the music was so good that it was something we needed to do.”

Apollo 18 – Iridescent Clouds
Probably my favourite Korean band of all time, Apollo 18 are now sadly no more, their last release (Black EP) was back in 2011. Their facebook page was active until 2016; I have no idea what any of the members are up to now. They released two amazing albums (Red and Blue) in 2009 and I had the pleasure of seeing them and performing on the same bill as them several times. Terrific musicians and really intense live performers who take musical cues from the likes of Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Mogwai and even Radiohead at times.
