The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

The LA-based duo that we so love in Broken Baby joins us for our Season 6 Premiere Friday night! "Late Stage Optimism" is out now & available everywhere via Poor Man Records.

Show Notes

As broadcast October 1, 2021 with plenty of extra attitude for you podcast punters.  We welcome one of our favorites back to the show tonight a week after they dropped their 2nd career album.  Alex Dezen & Amber Bollinger have not just been putting together one of the wildest post-punk outfits over the last several years with Broken Baby, but they have also put running one of the best homegrown rock labels out there as well with Poor Man Records.  We talked with the duo about their new album "Late Stage Optimism," which of course divulged into many different arguments like the merits of spiders, along with an endless game of "face on" between the two.

_________
It is 20 hours past midnight on a sunny crisp start to the month & the weekend, and it is time to get down better late than never on The Drop. And this particular Friday is shattered and scattered as October 1, 2021. This is Danno of course GFN HQ studio 2 doing like I do and tonight we welcome Broken Baby back to the show in the shiny afterglow of their latest LP. Late Stage Optimism just dropped last Friday via Poor Man Records, and we’ll get a few hefty scoops of that LP along with an exclusive interview with Amber Bollinger & Alex Diezen, who’ll join us on the phone from LA as they take over the entirety of our 2nd hour playlsit. I’m actually surprised they agreed to come on the show, as they were just on the cover of LA Weekly so it’s pretty clear they’re far too massive for our humble program, but we’re glad they deign to come down from the Hollywood hills however virtually tonight. That being noted, we gotta start with the history this evening, as a famous concert took place during the lunch rush at Union Square Park in New York, and cover everything after Jack White tells his tale of falling for a girl. THIS is The Drop.
________
The White Stripes – Fell In Love With A Girl
The Drop has commenced the audio donnybrook for this Friday night. How’s it going tonight, Drop Gangsters? (Korean) Danno here studio 2, GFN HQ ready to welcome our guest artist selectors for tonight in Broken Baby, which is the LA-based duo of Amber Bollinger & Alex Diezen. They’ll be taking over the entirety of hour 2’s music selections while talking about their latest album Late Stage Optimism, which just dropped last Friday.
That being duly noted on the very recent past and quickly approaching future, we went back to 2002 to start the gig tonight with The White Stripes and Fell In Love With A Girl. It was 19 years ago today that Jack & Meg White showed up and rocked an impromptu collection of covers and their original songs for the lunchtime crowd gathered in Union Square Park in lower Manhattan.
The duo started their set fully powered before an estimated 3,000 onlookers, but got unplugged by the police & city authorities before they could wrap their set. So, they finished strictly unplugged but nonetheless did finish.
Interestingly, MTV at the time noted that they didn’t get the time to play Fell In Love With A Girl, so that was a wee dedication to the ghost tune of the playlist to open things tonight.
Gotta love big bands playing intimate shows, especially impromptu ones.

Now moving insidiously forward we’re gonna continue to rock it out in the mold of our opener, and up next we have The Replacements, Young Winona, and Egg Drop Soup to give a few spins, all of which we’ll discuss further after letting the ladies go wild. THIS is The Drop on your Broken Baby Friday night.
________________
The Drop returns and we just let out our first block of cuts in the leadup to our weekly guest artist selector feature. What’s up Drop Gangsters (Korean)? Danno here barely holding it together as I await with turgid anticipation the arrival of Broken Baby for our 2nd hour. Amber & Alex will join us on the phone to rock out our full 2nd half while also providing us with words about their latest album called Late Stage Optimism, available everywhere now. For here in our first half, we just rocked some tunes that were chosen by Broken Baby, but kinda spilled over into the first hour due to time constraints and my showrunner not being willing to buy me a Delorean. To the recap of that last block...
The Replacements – Bastards of Young (…a little mid-80’s joint right there to begin the selections, this one from the Tim LP. Originally a punk band formed in 1979 in Minneapolis, the band would become one of the trailblazers of alternative rock later on.)
Young Winona – Killer Daisies (…the latest from the LA-based Kiwi misfits just released mid-summer. We were very proud to have lead singer Cassie Gaffney on the gig to premier that cut as well, especially since they’re signed to Broken Baby’s homegrown Poor Man Records imprint.)
Egg Drop Soup – Whiskey Priest (…another bit of newness out of LA with a Broken Baby connection is this one. The two bands recently collaborated on a split 7” release in late June. Keep a weary eye on both of those bands, they are causing some of the best trouble out there.)
Now as we travel towards the looming jump to part 2, we have a rare quartet to close things here as we’ve had some very quick-hitting punk-ish biz here in part 1 thus far. Up next is Shopping with a cut called Initiative and then we got Sweeping Promises and a brilliant joint called Hunger for a Way Out, but that’s not all as we had to get some Tummyache in tonight with a song called Median and to add some stank we’ll play FEET and a cut called Ad Blue to kill our bottle for the first fourth. THIS is The Drop on your guests & requests Friday with Broken Baby breakin’ it.
Shopping – Initiative
Sweeping Promises – Hunger for a Way Out
Tummyache – Median
FEET – Ad Blue

II
The Drop returns here in quarter 2, making sure we keep it a tad more slow & low that is the tempo for this portion of our nightly game of audio mirrors. Danno here tempering the flame a bit but you can’t keep it bottled for that long, awaiting our hour 2 guest artist selectors this week in LA-based rock band Broken Baby. Their 2nd career long player is out as of one week ago and is called Late Stage Optimism, available everywhere. As to that last pair of cuts we just let out into the ether, that was...
Night Hikes – Iona ( … who better to keep it somewhat rock-oriented but still super chill & wistful than this pair of favorite people from Seattle? This is the duo of Olivia Godby and Matthew Farrell, and Iona appeared on their fabulous 2019 LP Chalice which we cannot recommend highly enough.)
Human Barbie – Get A Life ( …another one cut for time from Broken Baby’s hour 2 playlist, this one having come out in 2020. Not sure if this is any reference to the ultra plastic so-called Human Barbie Ukrainian model, but this is the project of veteran LA musician Christopher Leopold, and is another great artist on the Poor Man Records roster of supermischeivous superstars.)
Now before we continue just a quick reminder to follow us on social media, we are @gfnthedrop on most major social media platforms. If you’re local aka here in Korea, send us a message #9870 (50/100). What doesn’t cost you anything is catching us after the show, The Drop with Danno or The Drop on GFN (or) is available on most major podcast platforms, and you can find us with a simple google search & subscribe free & easy.
Moving ahead, more spillover from Broken Baby’s playlist in hour 2 tonight, but not exclusively. On deck takin practice swings is Jaguar Sun to be followed by Extra Special & Marianne Faithful. We shall of course list off all the reasons why these songs are fantastic side opposite what tells us so. THIS is The Drop on your Friday night sesh with Broken Baby.
____________
The Drop is back and we are into the final airbreak of the first half this evening in the run-up to LA-based punk rebels Broken Baby joining us on the gig for all of part 3 & 4 tonight. This is Danno of course, studio 2, GFN HQ, and we’re just smoothing the tarmac for Alex & Amber’s Leer Jet to touch down ever so softly yet loudly in part 3. For that last block, we just jammed a couple more cut for time victims from the 2nd hour plus one of my own sardonic signatures, so let’s get to the afterparty…
Jaguar Sun – Make It Out (…this is the project of Ontario-based Blu Sanders, who’s also a rather brilliant writer & artist. Make It Out is a standalone single from Nice Guys Records of France, released in 2019.)
Extra Special – I Hate Love* (…this is a really nice tune from last year that appeared on the Lazy About It EP. Extra special is the solo project of Amelia Bushell, who is based in Brooklyn, and this was her debut release.)
Marianne Faithfull – Broken English (…one of the hundreds if not thousands if not millions of reasons to love Island Records is this number from 1979. This is the title track to the LP, which was her 7th career a major turnaround of fortunes for the English artist, having suffered years of drug abuse and homelessness during the preceding years.)
Alright, so we’re approaching the end of the hour and it’s time to warm up properly for the main event, so let’s get a taste of Broken Baby’s latest album Late Stage Optimism. First up is a wicked cut and play on words that is equally so called Meaniac, and then we’ll close things like we started with a cut called Jack White Money. THIS is The Drop with Broken Baby comin’ fierce after the jump, and we are at halftime.
Broken Baby – Meaniac
Broken Baby – Jack White Money

III & IV: Broken Baby
Broken Baby – He Likes Me
Pom Poko – Like A Lady
Go Fever – Long Run
Ohmme – Mine
Reckling – Spiders
Concrete Blonde – Joey

Broken Baby – Cloud Coverage
The Exploding Hearts – Sleeping Aides and Razorblades
Tummyache – DIY!!
Pip Blom – You Don’t Want This
Snowy Band – Living with Myself
Blur – Tender
