Today is Monday, June 22. Today's devotional is entitled Jesus is fully God. We're gonna read from John chapter 13 verses one through 17. It was just before the Passover festival, Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
Speaker 1:The evening meal was in progress and the devil had already prompted Jesus, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God. So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with a towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet?
Speaker 1:Jesus replied, you do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand. No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered, unless I wash you, you have no part with me. Then Lord, Simon replied, not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well. And Jesus answered, those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet and their whole body is clean and you are clean, though not every one of you.
Speaker 1:For he knew that he was going to betray him, and that's why he said that not everyone was clean. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. Do you understand what I have done for you? He asked them. You call me teacher and lord and rightly so, for that is what I am.
Speaker 1:Now that I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I've set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. And it's the day before Jesus' death, and I wanna talk briefly about the events that led up to the Last Supper.
Speaker 1:Jesus, has a triumphal entry into Jerusalem. He has his feet anointed with expensive perfume by Mary Magdalene, kind of as the guest founder of the banquet. He, rebukes the pharisees. He turns over the the tables in the temple, and he says that the basically, the time has come for the son of man to be glorified. And what he means by that is is he's going to to be crucified, and he's calling himself God.
Speaker 1:And so I say all this to say that the context in which he is washed in the disciples' feet is one where it is fully established, amongst his disciples, unlike somewhat a little bit earlier in his ministry when there was some mystery about exactly who Jesus was, not to Jesus himself, but to his disciples. At this point, everyone in that room, except for Judas, believes that Jesus is fully God and fully man. And we don't wanna apply this text just as just thinking about Jesus as a really good human, a perfect human even. We need to remember as we continue throughout the week that he is fully God as well. Reflect today on how you see Jesus in your own heart.
