The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

A selection, which is neither ranked nor comprehensive, of our favorite singles from the year thus far. Great tunes from Florence + The Machine, Robert Glasper, and some of our favorite guests like Ryan Egan, Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, and Laura Rain.

Show Notes

As broadcast April 11, 2022 with plenty of extra hearts for your podcast love letter.  Tonight with Kat Bass switching to our indie Tuesdays and Danno without an hour two guest for our Popcast Mondays here in early April, it was perfect timing to do a best of show for this year's first quarter thus far.  Lots of great new stuff out these past few months since 2022 started, and we tried to be as comprehensive as possible with the time.  Incredible tunes from Big Thief, KALI, Khruangbin, Florence + The Machine, and so many more along with some of our favorite guests and their new music as well!

It is 20 hours past midnight as the cherry blossoms just like that fall to the ground here in Korea, and if there was any weekend to get out and watch the idyllic scenes of nature it was this past one. Danno here and hoping you had a great Monday to start things this week, with the pink petals alighting the path whatever that may be tonight as April 11, 2022. So tonight we have a bit of a best of show lined up for the full two hours. As some of you know, Kat Bass is our new indie maven on Tuesdays as David Whatever flaked out. So for the time being I’m flying solo in the studio and it’s kind of a perfect time to go through some of our favorite tunes from the first quarter of this calendar year (and yeah, you can keep your CPA’s weird fiscal year), as we have not done such a show. So, this is some of our favorites from so far this year, and we’ll start with our best from last week with King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and go on from there. THIS is The Drop.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Magenta Mountain
___
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Magenta Mountain
- Omnium Gatherum, 20th studio album, April 22
Florence + The Machine – King
- This was the lead single to Dance Fever, Florence Welch & the band’s 5th studio album. May 13
Regina Spektor – Becoming All Alone
- This dropped as the lead single to the Russian-American artist’s upcoming 8th studio album. The LP drops June 24 via Warner.
Hurray For The Riff Raff – SAGA
- The latest from the music project of New Orleans-based Alynda Segarra is one of the best albums of the year thus far. Life On Earth is available everywhere.
Robert Glasper – Why We Speak
- Speaking of that, Black Radio 3 is also out & available everywhere, like this tune that features Esperanza Spaulding and Q-Tip in collab, the album just oozes with both soul and huge features.
Arjuna Oakes – The Techer
- One of our NZ faves is out with their latest EP as of February called Recovery Part 2, which is the follow-up to the young soul artist’s part 1 which dropped in 2020.

Jacob Banks – Just When I Thought It
- This was released as the artist gears up to release a new band project, and wow…what a tune. Not clear whether this is part of said project, but we’ll have to wait, I suppose.
Black Sea Dahu – One & One Equals Four
- This is a lovely cut to me the highlight of a great LP called I Am My Mother, which dropped on February 25.
Dust In The Sunlight – Former Lives
- This is a duo out of London and just a lovely tune released on February 9. The duo just dropped the latest single to their upcoming EP due out later this year, and that new tune is called Handful of Water, so go check it.
Ryan Egan – Soft Power
- The title track to the artist’s debut album which just dropped last Friday, so go check it out. We were honored to debut another tune Full-Time on the show when he joined us April 1.
Caroline Polachek – Billions
- For those that know the artist, this is a playful and complex departure from her previous work, but it’s fantastic just like the stuff from before.
Arcade Fire – The Lightning I
Arcade Fire – The Lightning II
- This is the lead double single to the band’s latest album which they wrapped recording last year. Everything Now will drop on May 6.

III & IV Popcast
Big Thief – Sparrow
Andrew Bird – Atomized
The Smile – Skrting On The Surface
Aldous Harding – Fever
KALI – Anybody Else
Laura Rain & The Caesars – Rise Again
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – Love Age

Son Lux feat Mitski & David Byrne – This Is A Life
Lucky Daye feat Alex Isley & vbrtns – Ego*
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Mariella
Dreamer Isioma – Sunset Drive
Bobby Oroza – Sweet Agony
Kurt Vile – Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)

Big Thief – Sparrow
- Dragon New Warm Mountain, I Believe In You.
- A very strong double album, but this one takes the cake for me. Adrienne Lenker is a master of songwriting, and this quite literally Biblical tune comes off as a vedic chant with its repetitions and references.
Andrew Bird – Atomized
- Great standalone single with an outstanding music video to boot, no album announced but do check our album of the year from 2019 My Finest Work Yet, Bird is a master.
The Smile – Skrting On The Surface
- This is the new project from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood along with the drummer from Sons of Kemet Tom Skinner.
- They’ve released a few singles thus far, but none better or more Kid A than this.
Aldous Harding – Fever
- An artist that definitely gets the respect of the tastemakers but not a lot of hype it would seem. Harding’s latest album Warm Chris dropped March 25, so go & check it out.
KALI – Anybody Else
- One of the youngest up-and-comers out there on the indie scene, Kali Flannigan dropped this in March as a standalone single. However, do check their discography, it is choice stuff and hope an album drops soon.
Laura Rain & The Caesars – Rise Again
The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – Love Age
- An ode to a couple soul favorites coming up. First is the title track to the Detroit band’s 5th career LP, which dropped Friday, and we had Laura Rain on the show, so go check the choice Detroit soul gems the artist dropped for us on that playlist.
- SFSE is out with their Step Down LP as of April 1, and we premiered this joint on the show the week prior. Big up to both Laura Rain and Tim Felten for coming on the gig and sharing their inspirations.

Son Lux feat Mitski & David Byrne – This Is A Life
- An absolutely massive film score right here from Son Lux to a film named in even more expansive fashion. Everything Everywhere All At Once directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert had initial release in March, with Son Lux scoring the entire 49 song score to the flick.
Lucky Daye feat Alex Isley & vbrtns – Ego*
- Another lovely LP from the New Orleans-based Lucky Daye, who came out with Candydrip on March 11. Like this tune, a rather slow burn experience, but oh so good.
Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Mariella
- Texas Moon EP
Dreamer Isioma – Sunset Drive
- This is from Goodnight Dreamer which is their 2nd career LP and a brilliant one at that. Based in Chicago, Dreamer Isioma has big plans moving forward so do keep an eye out.
Bobby Oroza – Sweet Agony
- Soul crooner out of Finland Bobby Oroza is out with their 2nd career LP on June 10 via Big Crown. Get Into The Otherside is the title, and he’ll be on the show for a world premiere on June 3 so mark it.
Kurt Vile – Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)
- This is the 3rd single from the artist’s upcoming album and as usual hits in such a great, indirect, and drawn out fashion you’re kind of wondering what happened.
- Watch My Moves by Kurt Vile is out this Friday!
