🎙 Episode 59: What To Do When You Feel Behind

Today we're having a real, honest conversation about the belief almost every entrepreneur struggles with at some point — “I’m behind. I should be doing more.”  If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like life has gotten in the way of your business lately, this episode is going to bring you clarity and reframe everything.

This isn’t about grinding harder, doing more, or pushing through burnout. It’s about reframing where you are, trusting the season you’re in, and understanding why growth often happens when it feels like nothing is working.

🎧 Inside this episode, we talk about:
✨ Why the belief “I’m behind” shows up for almost every business owner
✨ How life seasons (kids, family, chaos, change) don’t mean your business is failing
✨ The powerful question to ask yourself when you feel like you’re not doing enough
✨ Why growth often happens behind the scenes before you see results
✨ How to stop tying your worth and success only to money or bookings
✨ Why feeling uncomfortable can mean you’ve entered a bigger arena — not that you’re failing

If you’re a wedding business owner who feels frustrated, discouraged, or like you should be further along by now — this episode will shift how you see your business, your progress, and yourself. 💍

I am obsessed with building businesses that make lots of money but do so in a way that also create luxurious amounts of freedom. So, if you're looking to build, grow, or scale a wedding business in a way that doesn't burn you out and you'd love some guidance from someone who has done just that, this podcast is for you.

Nicole:

Hi everybody! Welcome to episode 59. Today I have a short little talk that I think is going to help every entrepreneur that is struggling with feeling behind. I know it's something that I've always struggled with and a lot of business owners struggle with it. It's a belief that I should be doing more.

Nicole:

I'm not doing enough. I'm behind. So what do you do when you feel like you're behind? That's what we'll be talking about today. But before I get into that this felt like something that I should share because it's something that I've been dealing with personally.

Nicole:

I've had a lot going on in my life and there are times in life where it just feels like there's all this other shit that happens and you're like can't focus on business you don't have like you literally just don't have the time to put into your business into building it. Building a business takes a significant amount of time, a lot of focus, a lot of determination and sometimes life just gets in the way like for me right now I I'm fostering this dog who is the sweetest dog but her mom died and she's my neighbor and they didn't know what to do with the dog and I felt like the dog started running away and coming to my house because I was sort of caring for it and I started feeling this connection but what happened is I ended up taking this dog in because the husband couldn't they have two little kids and you know the wife died of cancer and he couldn't handle the dog. So now I have this extra dog on top of the dog that I already have and my three kids and I'm also running multiple businesses working from home and if you work from home, you know if there's like distraction, it's hard to work.

Nicole:

And right now, even though all three of my kids are at school, because when they weren't at school, that was freaking hard, but like now they are. Now I have this dog that likes to bark and bark and bark and bark at everything because she's anxious obviously. Mean she just lost her mom everything is changing for her but she's just difficult and it's making it hard to work. On top of that my husband tells me two days ago that he's going to go to Japan to go snowboarding. So I've got three kids on my own with crazy hectic schedules plus these two dogs.

Nicole:

Then also my husband's family decides they're going to come in and visit during the time when he's not here. So I have all that going on too. It's a lot happening which is making it difficult to fit in time to get work done and that little feeling of I'm behind was starting to creep in. I wanted to tell you what I do when I get that feeling coming in, when I get that belief which is really common. It's something that almost every entrepreneur deals with.

Nicole:

You wish you were further ahead than you are. You wish that you could be doing more, that you could be achieving more, you booked more weddings, that your business was better off than it is, that you're making more money, all these things. Right? We all feel that no matter what level you're at, creeps in. What I like to do now that I'm conscious of it is I just pay attention to it.

Nicole:

I'm like, Oh, hey. Hey there old belief I'm behind. Is it true? Then I talk back to it. Is it true that I'm actually behind?

Nicole:

I might have two weeks of not being in my normal scheduled work. I like my schedule. I like my time that I have to work that's quiet, that feels productive, where I feel like I did all this stuff and I achieved something and I haven't been having that. Does that actually mean that I'm behind? No, it doesn't.

Nicole:

You know how I know that? Because everything in life is supposed to play out exactly the way it is at the pace that it does and you're supposed to learn the lessons at the rate that you do. If you feel like you're going slow it's because it was set up this way to give you some time to really learn these things. For whatever reason my life is chaos right now so I had to slow down to really dig into how it's perfect right where I am how I don't actually need to be further ahead because I am far enough you know I am in the perfect place I have so much to be proud of and a really helpful thing for me is when I settle in and I first ask is this true and then I look back five years ago ten years ago fifteen years ago where was I then? What did I want then?

Nicole:

What were my goals then? What did I have then? You know, like ten years ago, I was a new mom with three infants, you know, under three years old. I couldn't imagine that I would be in this place right now with this business that I have, in this house that I own, with this life that I have. I had to leave the house just now because I had house cleaners come over and the freaking dog just kept barking barking barking barking at them.

Nicole:

Whereas my dog does not bark at anyone so I'm not used to having to deal with that. Anyways, I had to get out of the house which took two hours of my time out. But here I am making this mean that I'm behind and I'm not doing enough when literally I have this dream life with house cleaners that come to my house to clean my house you know once a week and I come back and I have this like sparkling clean house that feels so freaking good how lucky so I have to like reframe my perspective and get myself back to like well ten years ago this dream life that I have now like I would have been so stoked on it and so I'm actually not behind. I'm actually exactly where I should be and here's the other thing that I think about when I get that feeling of behind. What I've noticed is that whenever you feel behind or like you're not far enough in one area of life so it might be that you feel behind in business financial area of life a different area of life is probably thriving.

Nicole:

There's eight areas of life right? There's business or career financial social physical mental and family and spiritual So when one area feels it's lacking on some level what I've noticed is that usually one or more of the other areas is thriving. Like all last year when I felt like I wasn't making as much money as I should be, I was kicking ass at the gym. I was making 95lb snatches like it was nobody's business and it was easy. I don't know where that came from.

Nicole:

I felt like it was all everything that I was doing physically was coming so easy to me and I started noticing like also family area of life seems to be pretty amazing like everything is going awesome with my kids, with my husband, everything was flowing and that felt like super rewarding. I felt so good in those areas, but in business financial it felt like I should be doing better, right? But how I've changed my perception now from how it used to be ten years ago when I was first starting building my business is I see these areas that feel slow or lacking or not enough or behind as these spaces that are necessary for whatever reason and I don't need to understand it right now. When those areas feel like you're in a valley, like you're not on the top of the mountain, you're in this space that doesn't feel as good as some of the mountains when you're on high booking the weddings, money's flowing in all that. When you're in that space of things feeling like they're not working that's when things are actually working behind the scenes underground for you.

Nicole:

What life does is it gives you these other areas to thrive in, so when business, financial isn't going good then something else is probably going excellent and you're just not paying attention to it. You're not appreciating it. When you start to appreciate the areas that are going good and the areas that are seemingly not going good because you know that there's growth happening, there's stuff happening behind the scenes that is working out for you. It needs to move slower because God's working on shit right now. He's working stuff out for you.

Nicole:

Source is trying to set stuff up. It's giving you time to get used to being in this new arena. What's happening is that you're probably stepping into a new space. One of my life coaches my coach business coach told me that, like, the reason why this feels tough right now or it's working or it's hard or it's scary, it's like you're behind, is because you're stepping into a new arena. You're not playing in the same little soccer field that you were before.

Nicole:

You're in this huge arena. It's a new level. You've stepped up into this new level and it's gonna feel scary because you've never done it before. Until you've played in there for a certain amount of times, you've played a certain amount of games, you're not going to have the confidence and the understanding and the skill sets and the beliefs and the thoughts and all the things that are needed to thrive in that new arena, but you will get there as long as you keep showing up. What you're doing right now is you're showing up in this new arena and you're gaining all this knowledge.

Nicole:

You're learning what it's like to play in this different space, this bigger space that is going to be way more rewarding, is going to bring you so much more money, so much more business. It's going to make your business thrive, but it doesn't feel safe yet because it's new, it's different, it's bigger. You're in a new, bigger space and you've got to get comfortable there. That's okay. You will figure it out, it's just continuing to show up even when it feels like it's not working.

Nicole:

When you start to feel like I'm behind, reframe it. Think about what else is working in my life. Where else am I thriving? Is there another area of life that is going really, really well for me? How can I appreciate that?

Nicole:

Life and happiness and feeling fulfilled is not only about business and money. Even though a lot of us entrepreneurs, we get to we get pretty stuck in this like this path of like, need to do more, need to make more money, need to achieve more, need to hit this next new level, and life is bigger than that. You create this job, this business, this career so that it supports your life. There's lots of other facets to life. There's your hobbies.

Nicole:

There's you know the things that you like to do to have fun. There's the things you like to do to keep your body healthy. There's your family. There's your social life. There's there's your spiritual life, there's so many other facets of life and if you're only focused on business and not paying attention to the other areas then you're really missing out and your business is there to support the other areas.

Nicole:

When I start feeling behind, I remember it's not only about making more money, it's not only about booking more weddings because this business is setting me up for all of that and there is a lot of growth happening beneath the scene. It's kind of like a bamboo tree. If you know anything about bamboo trees, they are this plant that when you plant them they take years and years to grow, but they grow under the ground. It takes a really, really long time for them to come up out of the ground. When they do come up, they just shoot up really fast and they grow quick, but the beginnings of it takes a long time.

Nicole:

It's not like nothing's happening. There's a shit ton of stuff happening underneath the ground. It's getting roots, it's digging deep, it's building this really, really strong foundation so when it's ready to finally pop up years later, it'll pop up and it grows fast. It's strong. It's ready.

Nicole:

That's you. That's what we are doing right now in this time that we feel behind. You're not actually behind. You're exactly where you should be. You're just growing your roots.

Nicole:

You're just getting stronger. You're just in a new arena. Other parts of your life are thriving and this business is setting you up for that. That's what a wedding business can do for you and what it should do. I know this podcast was a little bit different, but I kind of felt like you maybe needed to hear this.

Nicole:

I know I need this reminder a lot because I get stuck in these moments and need to remind myself nope not going there I'm not behind I'm exactly where I should be and I get to feel proud now in these moments I get to feel successful now I get to feel accomplished now because of all I've done, because of who I am. Instead of wallowing in this idea of being behind, prove that wrong because it's absolutely not true. You are not behind, you're exactly where you should be. Everything is working out for you even if you can't see it. There's still progress happening.
