Speaker 1:

Hi, and welcome to The State. I'm your host, Rebecca McAvoy. Today's date is 11/17/2025. The forecast predicts it'll be a warmer day with a high of being 42 and a low of being 38. The state brings you the stories that matter.

Speaker 1:

University efforts for compliance with federal civil rights laws require RSO cooperation. As part of the university's efforts to follow civil rights laws, registered student organizations were required to sign the anti discrimination policy in order to retain their good standing as an organization. Recently, changes have been made to CORS, CAMS, group funding, and RSO mission statement requirements in compliance with new federal civil rights laws. MSU Student Affairs urged RSOs to change their mission statements by adding, All programs and activities are open to all without restriction or preference based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, national origin, or other protected personal identity. According to the University Communications Officer, Kat Cooper, Student Affairs is taking additional steps to ensure RSO understand and agree that non discrimination means that they cannot treat people differently based on their protected identity.

Speaker 1:

Former Faculty Senate Chair Settles Lawsuit Against Two Trustees. The former chair of Michigan State University's Faculty Senate, Jack Lipton, settled his lawsuit against two trustees he accused of retaliating against him for comments he made criticizing one of them and incorrectly characterizing the comments as racist. Court records filed Wednesday in the US District Court of Western Michigan state that Lipton's lawsuit against trustees Rima Vasar and Dennis Denno has been settled in full following a voluntary meditation process. The terms of the settlement agreement are still being drafted. Lipton wrote in a text message to the State News.

Speaker 1:

Lipton and his attorney, Liz Abadore, declined to comment further on the filing. ASMSU passes bill to reopen funding for activity department of SAB. Among eight other bills passed Thursday evening, ASMSU passed two bills to amend title four of the ASMSU manual to include new criteria for the activity department to allow them to get funding. Additionally, the general assembly passed a bill to amend title six of the student allocations board code of operations to include the criteria required to become an activity department. Groups will now go through a process of signing up, presenting to SAB and the GA and receiving new funding through this amended process.

Speaker 1:

The activity department, previously composed of CORS and CAMS groups, had its funding frozen, and ASMSU has been making efforts to regenerate that funding. With this bill passed, ASMSU made strides towards reopening that funding for the new activity department next semester. Three takeaways from Michigan State football's late collapse against Penn State. Saturday was the last chance for their senior players to read or tap the sign on the run out, and they played with a will to defend what's theirs. However, the effort to defend home turf and pride in a must have situation fell short.

Speaker 1:

The current Spartan warriors fighting their battles on the grass now have an official end date on their war of a season. The score was 28 to 10 in favor of Penn State.
