Hebrews 11: 27-29
A weekday morning devotional series written by Aaron Marcarelli and hosted by Chad McBeam
“By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he persevered, as though seeing Him who is unseen. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch them. By faith they passed through the Red Sea as through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned.”
Hebrews 11:27-29 NASB2020
Moses spent years in exile afraid for his life before God called him. Moses answered “Here I am”. Moses did have some questions for God, but in the end Moses did as God asked and became the leader of the people of Israel and prophet for God. He told Pharaoh what God was going to do to Egypt. That there would be plague and calamity heaped upon Egypt if Pharaoh did not free the Israelites. The last calamity was the death of all firstborn living beings. But God saved Israel from this through the Passover…
“Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs…For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and fatally strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the human firstborn to animals; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will come upon you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”
Exodus 12:7-8, 12-13 NASB2020
This is quintessential example of what Paul reminds us in Romans “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”
Romans 12:19 NASB2020
God’s wrath is always true and always right. Let him deal with those who have unrepentant sin.
The Passover is also the foreshadowing of the coming of Christ, Peter reminds us of the perfect unblemished sacrifice that Jesus was…“knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”
1 Peter 1:18-19 NASB2020
The blood of the unblemished lamb, which is Christ our Lord, saves us from eternal death and destruction.
The lives of the “Heroes of the Faith” point us to Christ and His redemptive love and sacrifice. Which gives us perfect reconciliation and forgiveness.
Lord we thank you for your sacrifice, on the cross and subsequent resurrection which conquered death giving us eternal life with you. Help us to trust in you and your perfect ways. Help us to draw strength from these awesome and yet ordinary men and women of the Old Testament. Thank you for teaching us through them.
