Welcome. Welcome to the first episode of the Golf Nest Podcast. We've got Patrick, Josh, Brian. I'm going read off today's run of show and we're going to dive in. You ready?
Josh Lynn (00:13)
Welcome welcome to the first episode of the Wild Nets Podcasts. We've got Patrick, Josh, Brian, I'm going read off today's part of show and then we're going to dive in.
Let's do it. Let's jump in boys. Alright so today we're going to talk about TPL, have a golf
PB (00:25)
Let's do it. Alright, so today we're going to talk about TGL, the Inter-Golf
Brian Harstine (00:27)
Alright, so today we're going to talk about TGL, the indoor golf
Josh Lynn (00:32)
and lives and money last year to golf Right potentially champion's tour and what's going on And then
Brian Harstine (00:32)
and Liv's money wars where they ended last year, ⁓ YouTube golf's explosion, how that's fitting into this whole world right now, Tiger potentially changing the champion's tour and what's going on in his world right now. It seems to be a hot button topic.
PB (00:32)
and the money wars where they ended last year ⁓ YouTube golfs explosion how that's fitting into this whole world right Tiger potentially changing the champion of store and what's going on in this world right now? What seems to be a hot fucking topic
Brian Harstine (00:47)
And then we're gonna wrap up with a hot take speed round. So ⁓ Patrick, you wanna lead us off?
PB (00:47)
and then we're gonna wrap up with a hot take speed round so ⁓ Patrick lead us off with the dome collapse. Yeah Yeah, so
Josh Lynn (00:48)
we're wrap up with a round so Patrick you want to lead us off with the dome collapse. Yeah. so
Brian Harstine (00:57)
Yeah.
Josh Lynn (00:58)
November 2023, first ball started at the TBL League. Temporary power failure system caused the dome of the Snowfy Center down in Florida to deflate. So a little over $2 million in damage. That's way to be, but I think more damage than what the time was
PB (00:58)
November, 2023, this was the first false start of the TGL league. Um, was a temporary power failure system that caused the dome of the SoFi center down in Florida to, um, deflate. a little over 2 million bucks in damage, uh, was what it was estimated to be, but think more damaging to what at the time was an early,
Brian Harstine (01:14)
but I think more damage.
Josh Lynn (01:19)
stage lead. It kind
PB (01:18)
early stage league. was kind
Brian Harstine (01:19)
stage lead that was kind of
Josh Lynn (01:20)
slapped together.
PB (01:20)
slapped together,
Brian Harstine (01:20)
slapped together,
probably not any kind of, just slapped together
PB (01:21)
probably not even kind of just slapped together to
Brian Harstine (01:24)
or offset or counterbalance, whatever you want to call it, LIV,
Josh Lynn (01:24)
or offset or counterbalance with.
PB (01:23)
Compete or offset or counterbalance, whatever you want to call it,
Brian Harstine (01:27)
you know, was just kind of kneecapped from the get
Josh Lynn (01:27)
It was just kind of, yeah.
PB (01:27)
It was just kind of Kneecapped from the get
Brian Harstine (01:30)
Yeah. All things considered, the tech inside, I think, spared most of the damage, but the biggest delay was just, they pushed back the start, the starting season by a year. Yeah. That was, that was pretty huge. Yeah. Pushing it back by a year gave Liv a little bit of room to breathe. Um, but also probably gave TGL the opportunity to sort of rebuild, rebrand a few things that they were working on internally. Last year's season was really good though.
Josh Lynn (01:30)
Yeah, all things considered. Push back to start. season by. that was pretty.
PB (01:30)
All things considered, the tech inside I think was spared most of the damage, but the big play was just it pushed back the the starting season by a That was, was
⁓ But also probably keep you know the opportunity.
Josh Lynn (01:47)
but also like getting the idea of a...
PB (01:52)
Last year's season was really good.
Josh Lynn (01:53)
Last year's season was really good though.
Brian Harstine (01:55)
⁓ It started off kind of rocky. We didn't know what was happening. It's just like any startup. They're trying to find their, as you say, product market
PB (01:56)
It started off kind of rough, but you know what was happening? like these startups are trying to find their product market
Josh Lynn (01:56)
Started off kind of rocky. Didn't know what was happening. They were kind of following their, as you say, product market.
Brian Harstine (02:03)
I tuned into a good amount of them. I actually recorded most of them. So my viewer experience was
PB (02:03)
I tuned into a good amount of them, actually reported most of them. So my viewer experience
Josh Lynn (02:03)
know, they tuned into a good amount of that. Actually, the whole business, some of my viewer experience was
Brian Harstine (02:08)
almost that of YouTube, where I recorded them, played them back during
PB (02:08)
of almost that of YouTube where I recorded them, played them back during
Josh Lynn (02:08)
out of YouTube. I recorded them, played them back to work,
Brian Harstine (02:12)
to catch up on different moments rather than just tuning in
PB (02:12)
tried to catch up on different moments rather than just tuning in LIV.
Josh Lynn (02:12)
tried to catch up on different topics rather than just tuning in
Brian Harstine (02:16)
Their deal with ESPN
PB (02:16)
You their deal with ESPN definitely
Josh Lynn (02:16)
know, their deal with ESPN.
Brian Harstine (02:17)
definitely helps.
Josh Lynn (02:18)
It was interesting to watch
Brian Harstine (02:18)
It was interesting though watching this because of
PB (02:18)
It was interesting though
Josh Lynn (02:21)
you know, they're definitely finding what around mid season and change the
Brian Harstine (02:21)
hosts, know, they're definitely finding where they fit. But around mid-season, they kind of found that, they changed some rules,
PB (02:21)
the hosts you know, they're definitely finding around midseason Josh you watch some this as well. Yeah, so
Josh Lynn (02:29)
right? Yeah, the TGL, mean, let's look at the good and bad here boys. And so Tiger's name was named that some of the big guys that they have there is the draw to it.
Brian Harstine (02:28)
Josh, you watched some of this as well.
So obviously.
is the draw to it.
Josh Lynn (02:40)
that one thing that I like about the TGL is you got guys like
PB (02:44)
Zander, who you find that is a personality that I've never seen before when he's out on the course. And that's what I love about what we'll talk about later on with you, but with the PGA, it's just versus these other formats out there. The other formats are so much more compelling and understanding to me to be able to understand who these guys are from a personality perspective that we've never gotten before.
Josh Lynn (02:44)
Xander who you finally got to see a personality that I've never seen before when he's out on the course. And that's what I love about what we'll talk about later on with YouTube golf, but with the PGA tour, frankly, it's just versus these other formats out there. The other formats are so much more compelling and entertaining to me to be able to understand who these guys are from a personality perspective that we've never gotten before.
And I think that we started to do it when they mic'd
PB (03:09)
And I think that we started to do it when they might.
Josh Lynn (03:11)
up, what was it called when they had Tiger versus Phil and in the big challenge, the match.
PB (03:11)
What was it called? match.
Brian Harstine (03:16)
The capital
one is the match and now they've kind of switched that off of some of those guys and they did a Yeah, which I missed I actually have to go back and watch that online
PB (03:18)
Now the testers. They ran the skins game over Thanksgiving this year. I was going to talk to you guys about that during the fast take later on though. The skins game was such a failure. the first time in 17 years. We're at like 18 million dollars.
Josh Lynn (03:27)
I was going to talk to you guys about that during the fast take later on that the skins game was such a failure for the first time in 17 years. bring it back.
Brian Harstine (03:31)
This game was such a failure. For the first time on Saturday...
That's wild! Seriously.
Josh Lynn (03:37)
Yeah, but we bring it back for the first time in 17 years. Nobody knows who it is. I mean, I want to ask the audience here, please subscribe, comment on the side because did y'all know about that? The skins game was happening. It launched at 9 AM Eastern time on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.
PB (03:41)
I want to ask the audience here, subscribe, comment, because did you all know about it was happening? It launched at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving

Josh Lynn (04:17)
to show all the different.
Like I said, the graphics league is this part three, we have high stakes type deal. YouTube's got their own internet invitational, which has a couple million dollars on the line for those creators. You know, 18 million people know that much for
PB (04:35)
You know, here we've got 18 million. didn't know that much for
Brian Harstine (04:39)
this skins game, this one-off deal. And TGL's prizes were ⁓ pretty significant for first, second, and third. I think there was 20 million. I mean, clearly, the prize draws the pros. The pros are supposed to draw the audience. But without marketing, it just doesn't show up. TGL did marketing extremely well. I will say that. They were everywhere. ⁓

Josh Lynn (04:51)
Again, the first time in 17 years to bring it back. The skins game should be an absolute juggernaut
for everybody to tune in just like a Cowboys playing on the Thanksgiving Day. And yet I think it was an absolute failure this year.
PB (05:05)
Thank you.
And yet, absolutely. ⁓

I'm not going to dispute

that. Look, ultimate formats and
PB (05:13)
that. mean, look, alternate formats, think now that obviously with TGL,
the PGA
kind of getting it together. They kind of
jumped out of the gate, got Liv and caught off guard.
Have you guys read Phil or I'm sorry, not Phil, Alan Ship, not clear, couple of years ago, Liv and Let Die, L-I-V, Liv and Let Die.
Josh Lynn (05:26)
You guys read, or I'm sorry, not. I would ship not great. L. I. V. LIV and let die.

TGL was 51.9 years. That's the second youngest among all major sports leagues, only behind the NBA. And then compared to the PGA Tour, TGL viewers are 14 years younger on average than PGA Tour broadcast. Yeah, I mean, that makes sense. It's a completely different product, right? right now. I think that we've got so many options. I'm looking at this from the long term perspective and frankly, I don't think the TGL makes it five years from now. I don't think that LIV is going to be what LIV is today. Five years from now. I absolutely not. I stand behind this. We will see a merger of the Platforms come together at the end of the day. The PGA tour is Sears. The PGA tour is

I think that we can not just get this from a long-term perspective. I don't think that change is going to happen. don't think that LIV is going to be what LIV is. At the of the day, the PGA Tour is here. The PGA Tour is
Brian Harstine (10:37)
do we have a hot take here that he's gonna, we have to track this for the next couple years?

that we have five years and here's one. Okay, urgency of future that takes one. Tiger's gonna be done. Maybe he's making the major survey.
PB (14:27)
that TGL is not going to be around in five years and here's why. It's a convergence of a few different things. One, Tiger's going to be done. Maybe he's making the major circuit and he's coming out to Augusta every year. I hear that. He's already committed to show up to all the JupiterLinks matches even if he's not playing. He's committed to coming out this season.

PB (17:51)
I think
after another full year where they're losing billions of dollars, think that Yasser is going to be compelled to eventually come to the table and stop Lighting money on fire. So again, we've already talked about my hot date. I don't think TGL survives. don't think Lips survives, but I think that there's something we're to pull in for our scrooges. TGL? Yeah. I couldn't tell you. It's coming up though, right?
Josh Lynn (17:53)
that Yasser is going to be held to eventually cut the table. So again, we've already talked about my hot tape days, ended the day. don't think TGL survives.
Brian Harstine (18:00)
Think that y'all.
Josh Lynn (18:12)
I don't think Liv survives, but I think that there's something where we're to pull from all of these. But it's
Brian Harstine (18:14)
Do you guys know when the first match is? Yeah December
Josh Lynn (18:20)
the same.
PB (18:21)
December 28th. we are all three having golfing fans here. If Bryson is not on Liv, it leaves. If Tiger's not on the PGA Tour anymore, because he might start playing some champions tournaments.

Where does the viewer should go and how much money then does Liv start losing and how much money does PGA?
PB (18:39)
Where does the viewership go and how much money then does Liv start losing and how much money does trade?
Josh Lynn (18:45)
honestly, I think
PB (18:45)
I'm saying is I think
that there's a path and let's say it's gonna happen. I'm saying there's a path for Hey behind the scenes and back channeling to say, Hey, we need to start bringing this together and Where do we LIV doesn't want to completely just come? Hat in hand and lose face. Okay. Here's what we're going to do phase one Bryson brings over a team of LIV guys to inject some energy into TGL, which is going to be a dying product by then
Josh Lynn (18:46)
that there is a path. There's a path for, hey, behind the scenes, there's a back channeling. So, hey, we need to start bringing this together and where do we go? We can just add a hand and lose face. Okay, here's what we're gonna do.
Brian Harstine (18:51)
Hey, behind the scenes and back paneling to say, hey, we need to start bringing this together and. Where do we do it? How do we do it? Come out in hand and lose face. Here's what we're going to do. Phase one, Bryson brings over the team to LIV guys that inject the energy and PGL, which is to be a product.
Josh Lynn (19:04)
I use one price and brings over a team of LIV guys to energy and TGL, which is going to be a product.
then obviously, TGL, TGA, TGL also G-Circuit, the I'm going to up.
Brian Harstine (19:13)
then obviously, you know, PGA, TGL also in essence, the strategic sports group.
PB (19:13)
And then obviously the TGL PGA is TGL also SSG strategic sports group
Brian Harstine (19:20)
going to look that up while you're talking here.
Josh Lynn (19:22)
just saying that that could be one of right.
PB (19:22)
just saying that that could be a pest. Step one, have Bryson
Brian Harstine (19:21)
I'm just saying that that could be a problem. One, have to some
PB (19:24)
and some LIV guys come, maybe not the controversial ones, but some LIV guys come to play and they have a TGL team for season.
Brian Harstine (19:24)
good guys, maybe not the controversial ones, but the LIV guys come to play and they have a team, a team per season, and maybe at end of that year, they come and play Tiger's tournament at the hero. And then things start to cool off and come together for me. I don't know, just Does this all break? All right.

Blimp guys come, maybe not the controversial, but the Blimp guys come to play and they're gonna have a team for the season. And maybe at end of that year, they come and play.

and maybe at the end of that year they come and play Tiger's Tournament as a hero and then things start to cool off and come together from there. I don't know, a
