Good morning.
And welcome to morning cereal
Okay, good morning
everyone and welcome to Thursday.
Now you know, I don't like to start the
day with bad news and
I hate to put a butt in
here but just think of this maybe as a
public service announcement, right?
If you've been drinking all night and on
a binger, you should
be aware that today is
National Alcohol Screening Day.
So get yourself an
Uber, get yourself home.
Because today is also Global Work from
Home Day, which is great, right?
So grab a bite for breakfast to sober up.
Maybe also just a croissant.
Why?
Because today is also
National Cinnamon Croissant Day.
And if all this is just creating just a
real tough time for you
because you just had that
tough of a night, well, call a sibling to
help you out, right?
Because today is also
National Sibling Day.
And if that is all just way too much,
just go ahead and take the day off.
It's a beautiful spring day.
Maybe hit the golf course or something
because it's also National Golfers Day.
I could keep going on and on and on, but
I'll spare both of us the time in pain.
Well, our quote this morning is from the
character Rebecca Pearson
from the show This Is Us.
And if you haven't watched this show,
then you definitely need
to add this to your must
watch list.
Well, one of my favorite quotes from the
character Rebecca Pearson
is, "Until the day is over,
there's always a chance you'll remember
it for something else."
This reminds me to stay positive, that
things can turn around
even on a day that started
out not so great.
Well, today's news, facts, and
birthdays are for April 10th.
And we're going to start back in 1986.
And do you remember going
outside to see Haley's Comet?
Well, on this date back in 1986, the
comet reached its nearest point to Earth.
And if you missed it, don't worry,
Haley's Comet is coming back.
And it's just around the corner in 2061.
Well, in 1996 on this day, the fastest
wind speed that was
ever recorded that was not
produced by a tornado was
clocked at 253 miles an hour.
And it was during a tropical cyclone over
an island off of Australia.
And lastly, on this day in 2019,
astronomers released the
first ever image of a black hole,
which is in the center of the massive
galaxy M87, which I'm
sure we're all very familiar
with.
Well, happy birthday to you
if today is your birthday.
You share a birthday
with actress Daisy Ridley.
She's Rey from the new Star Wars.
She'll be just a young 33.
Then actor Haley Joel Osman.
You remember him right?
I see dead people.
Well, he's 37 today.
Then actress and singer
Mandy Moore from This Is Us.
She turns 41 today.
And actor Steven Seagal still karate
kicking his way through life.
He's 74 today.
And the number one song on this date back
in 1990 was Love Will
Lead You Back by Taylor
Dain.
This was Taylor Dain's only number one
song, but she had
another great song, Tell It To
My Heart.
You might remember that one too.
And a year earlier, that one topped out
at number seven on the charts.
Okay, well, let's jump
into our book review here.
And we're reading through Steven R.
Kobe's The Seven Habits
of Highly Effective People.
And in this first chapter, Inside Out,
Kobe is discussing the
differences between character
traits, which focuses on character
qualities like integrity,
temperaments, patience, modesty,
versus personality ethic, which Kobe
believes teaches
superficial, more quick fix techniques.
And yesterday, Kobe was talking about how
each of us has our
own paradigm or roadmap
in our minds.
And that is the way in
which we see the world.
So in this next sub chapter here in
chapter one, the power of a
paradigm shift, Kobe talks
about that aha moment when, quote,
someone finally sees the
composite picture in another
way.
The more bound a person is by the initial
perception, the more
powerful the aha experiences,
end quote.
So for example, science has undergone
many aha paradigm shifts,
as has our medical field.
Government has seen paradigm shifts.
And Kobe points out that not all paradigm
shifts are for the
better and points to the
move from character ethic
to personality ethic, right?
Kobe says, quote, our paradigms, correct
or incorrect, are the
sources of our attitudes
and behaviors and ultimately our
relationships with others, end quote.
Kobe tells a story of a man he
encountered on the subway
who was ignoring his out of
control children while he
sat with his eyes closed.
Well, when confronted, the man said that
he had just come from
the hospital where his
wife had just died.
That's Kobe's first story, by the way.
And an example of a
paradigm shift, right?
Kobe says many people experience these
fundamental shifts when they face life
threatening experiences
or entering new roles like a husband or a
wife or into a new job.
But be careful.
Kobe again points out that if we want to
make minor changes in
our lives, perhaps focusing
on our attitudes and
our behaviors will work.
That's, quote, if we want to make
significant quantum change,
we need to work on our basic
paradigms, end quote.
Kobe quotes Thoreau here saying, quote,
for every thousand
hacking at the leaves of evil,
there is one striking
at the root, end quote.
Kobe closes this sub chapter by saying,
quote, we can only
achieve quantum improvements in
our lives as we quit hacking at the
leaves of attitude and
behavior and get to work on
the root, the paradigms from which our
attitudes and our
behaviors flow, end quote.
Those roots and those foundations in our
lives are just so important.
And Kobe's going to continue to unpack
those tomorrow in our
next sub chapter, which is
called Seeing and Being.
Hey, enjoy that cinnamon croissant today.
