Good morning and
welcome to Morning Serial.
Okay, good morning and
welcome to Thursday, people.
We are one day away from the first Friday
of November and that's
sounding pretty nice.
Well, today is National Team Manager Day
and that's the day we
recognize those who keep
the chaos in check.
Or at least they try
their best to do that, right?
Whether it's the soccer mom who remembers
every kid's water
bottle or the office manager
who's making sure that everybody has the
same number and the same
size as monitors as everybody
else, well, today is for them and their
color-coded spreadsheets and caffeine.
Well, our quote this morning to put you
in the right frame of
mind comes from actress
Emma Stone who said, "What sets you apart
can sometimes feel like a burden and it's
not."
"All the time, it's
what makes you great."
So a nice little reminder here on a
Friday Eve that
leadership or just being you isn't
about being perfect.
It's about leaning
into what makes you you.
Well, today's news facts and birthdays
are for November 6th.
We're going to start back in 1492.
And yes, you are correct.
That is the year that
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
But it was also when Columbus noted in
his journal that the
Arawak Indians had introduced
him and his crew to smoking tobacco.
Now, back in Spain, one crew member was
actually jailed after alarmed people
called a man blowing
smoke out of his mouth and his nose, the
work of none other than Satan.
Well, moving up to 1947, that's when
NBC's Meet the Press TV
show it debuted and it became
and still is the longest running TV show
in the US now in its 78th season.
Well, happy birthday to you.
Today's your birthday.
You share it with Oscar
winning actress Emma Stone.
She's 37 today.
Actor and writer Ethan
Hawke, he's 55 today.
Legendary actress and icon
Sally Field, she's 79 today.
And the inventor of basketball at my alma
mater, the University of
Kansas, James Naismith.
He was born on this date in 1861.
Well, the number one song on this date in
1987 was, "I Think
We're Alone Now" by Tiffany.
Does it get any more 80s than Tiffany?
Now this bubblegum pop hit, it captured
teenage independence in
the 80s and at just 16 years
old, Tiffany became the youngest female
artist to hit number one since 1966.
You know who did it then?
It was Cher.
She was 20 years old.
For those of us who grew up in that
timeframe of the 80s,
this kind of makes me want to
hang out in a shopping mall.
Am I right?
That was kind of the
thing to do back then.
Well, all right, that aside, the thing to
do today is to dive
into some self growth.
In our book review of Mel Robbins, The
Let Them Theory, and we
are in the sub chapter,
do the feelings fit the circumstances?
Now in this chapter, Mel Robbins explores
a question we rarely stop to ask.
Do your feelings match
what's actually happening?
And she explains that many of us respond
to small frustrations
with outsized reactions
because we're not reacting to the
present, we're reacting to the past.
"Most of our emotional responses aren't
about what's happening
now, they're about what's
already happened."
Now Robbins shares examples of how this
plays out, getting
furious at a co-worker's tone
when really you're triggered by a parent
who once dismissed you.
Or let's say you're spiraling after
criticism because it hits
an old wound about not being
good enough.
So her advice on this?
Slow down and question your emotions
before they take the wheel.
"When you ask, do my feelings fit the
facts, you put your
adult brain back in charge."
Now this isn't about dismissing feelings,
it's about right sizing them.
Feelings deserve
attention, but not domination.
Robbins reminds readers that emotional
maturity means noticing
your inner storm and then
choosing not to just
unleash it on everyone nearby.
She closes with this empowering idea,
"You can't control the
first feeling, but you can
always choose the second thought."
And that's the moment that you reclaim
your calm, that's the
moment you respond instead
of react.
Here is your takeaway.
Don't let yesterday's
emotions hijack today's peace.
Check your feelings and choose the ones
that fit the moment.
So whether you're leading a team or just
leading yourself through
another busy Thursday, channel
your inner manager.
Stay calm, organized and maybe hum some
of those nostalgic 80s
hits to keep your head
in a good space, right?
