PW Podcast

In this episode, I'm sharing some big updates across my apps and games.

First up — my Job Finder Tracker app is now available on Android! It helps you manage your job search, track applications, follow up on leads, and attach multiple resumes to each listing. I'm really proud of this one.

I'm also making serious progress on the PVP mode for my Project Hack game — player-vs-player hacking is working and nearly ready for public testing.

And finally, I'm weighing whether to move into video podcasting. I'd love to hear your thoughts — reach out at PeterWitham.com/contact

What is PW Podcast?

Join me on a journey exploring the ups and downs of being a creator. I make things across many mediums including apps, games, and podcasts. Along the way, I take the side roads to motivation and inspiration. Navigating the winding paths that try to stop us from achieving our dreams and goals.

What's up, everybody? Welcome to another episode of the PW Podcast. I have been very busy, hence the reason that you've not had some episodes for a while. I have released a lot of updates, and I'm working on a lot more updates for my apps and for my games. Wanna talk about that a little bit here. First of all, you can celebrate with me the initial release of my Job Finder Tracker application.

Originally it was on iOS. I have now released the Android version. I will put a link in the show notes. So if you're an Android user you can now download that from the App Store, and away you go. And I hope it helps you find a job. The idea of the application has always been that you can list jobs, and you can track progress with them, keep yourself on track make sure that you follow up on the appropriate ones, and of course, it has resume support in there as well now, and you can attach multiple resumes.

And you can also attach those to each job listing so you know where you're at. Basically, a job finding management application app. So yeah, I'll put a link in the show notes, but you can go to PeterWitham.com, and you'll find it there. I'm very excited. The Android version has taken a while, but I wanted to get in all the extra features that I wanted to have in the iOS version.

If you are interested in that application, and you wanna review it for a site or something like that, reach out to me.

We'll see if we can arrange something for you. I would be only too happy to do that. And if you know anyone looking for some work I think this app has genuinely helped people, so please pass that on to them as well. Greatly appreciated. So that's been a big deal, right? That is my first official personal Android application that has shipped.

I've shipped Android games before, but this is my first Android application, and a lot of work went into it, and I'm just really proud of it. There is a lot of features in there Some of them were easier to do than I thought. Some of them were harder than I thought. But there is already an update in the works for some extra features that I want to add in as well.

It's that never-ending cycle of basically always wanting to deliver things to my customers, whether it's something I think of, or an issue that I find, or whether it's a reported bug from a user, or a feature request. I always try to do my best to satisfy all of those. So that's the big news.

The other sort of slightly lesser but still big news is my Project Hack game. For about a week now, I have been quietly playing the PVP version, where you can hack other players. It's basically me hacking one of my test players and them hacking me back, and it's working. And I gotta say, I was quite surprised that it was not as much of a daunting task as I thought it would be for, gosh, I don't know how many years I've been trying to do this.

But there are a lot of interesting edge cases that I will definitely talk about. I may do it on my UIBuzz podcast, which is more of a targeted audience for that kind of thing. But, if you've ever made games or ever thought about making games, let me just warn you that player versus player is a very radically different problem than, just a player playing a game where you don't play against other people.

It's that thing of not only are there a lot of things you gotta account for, but it makes things very interesting because players will always do things you don't think of, which in some ways is great because it makes games better. But it also presents a lot of challenges because you've gotta kinda stay on the ball with that and, work through it and try to solve or, close down any issues or loopholes that somebody finds, and that is very difficult.

Especially when it's this kind of game where it's not like your traditional player versus player think of things like, whatever, Fortnite or any of those first-person perspective games. This is a statistical kind of hacking game, right? It presents very different challenges in that I wanted to have the ability for players to hack other players- when they're offline.

But to make it fair the key thing is to make it fair, make it competitive, make it challenging, and make it open, but also to make sure that there's no bullying can go on or, anything like that. And that's a very difficult problem to solve. And I'm not saying that I've solved it. That is why it's still in very early release for the PVP stuff.

But I'm getting ready to give that to my testers and also potentially give it to the world so you can all try it out. As always, the thing there will be, hey, it's still pre-release. It could drastically change. But I'm gonna learn a lot from how people use it, how people try to play it, and what they try to do with it.

On top of that, they can still play the solo game version, and I'm working on extra parts for the storyline there, some of the unlocks, and the way that all of that works as well, and the mystery behind it. So there's a lot going on. But that, as I've said before, is a true labor of love, and I am more than prepared to continue to keep taking my time on that while I work on other games and my applications.

So yeah, it's been a crazy few weeks. Combine that with, a always busy day job, which is nice, and it all adds up very quickly. I have been trying to resist some of the new games that I'd like to play that are coming out as well. That's always a difficult challenge. But I'm managing so far to avoid those and focus on the things that I need to get done.

Along with that, I am looking at the possibility of video podcasts now that has come back, because I remember video podcasts when it was a thing, a long time ago now. And then it faded off, and now it's coming back again, and I always liked the format. And I think for some things, especially things like game development, app development, technical stuff, that kind of thing, sometimes you can only really get things across by talking to them and showing people at the same time.

So of course, the video version for that

is perfect. And interestingly, it's also timely as we are entering the busy conference season for mobile platforms. So we'll see how that goes. I'm still thinking about it. There are extra costs involved there. And, as I've said before, and I'm not saying this to "Hey, people send me money."

Just the reality of it My podcasts have never really covered their production costs, which is Okay, for, to a certain point. After a while money does get tight, but with video version there is not only inherent cost in time of making it, which is fine 'cause I love making them, but unfortunately it's also an extra cost for things like hosting and stuff.

So I've really got to evaluate whether I think it's worth it and whether I can afford to do that or, to essentially struggle on with the audio version. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that, by the way. If you prefer audio, video, or, hey, give me the option of both, reach out to me, PeterWitham.com.

There's a contact form there, and let me know because I'm really undecided on it to be honest, folks. The cost is pretty big increase, but it's a whole interesting avenue of creativity which, of course, is very attractive to me. So that's a few things that I've had going on. I got a lot more updates in the pipeline for things and some new ideas as well.

I need to get back to my live streaming. That has definitely taken a side step because as I've mentioned before I'm just working so much that by the time it gets to late in the evening, I'll be honest, I'm so exhausted that I don't think I could do a good stream and so I just don't. But I know that folks out there have been asking me like, "Hey, what happened to the live streams?"

So maybe now I've shipped some updates we can get into that again because I also have to make a whole bunch of videos. I gotta make a new bunch of videos for Job Finder Tracker for both Android and iOS like I did on my SubRadar application that I was pretty pleased with those videos and I think I need to at least start doing some more marketing videos and, tutorial videos, that feature videos, tho- those kind of things.

So they're, again, they're always fun but you have to pick and choose Everything I do is by myself. I'm a solo developer and producer, so I have to pick and choose what to do and when, and try to find a balance for that, which is tough. But anyway, folks, that's what I've got for you this week.

Don't worry, still out there, still doing these things. I know it's been a little bit of a break. Hey, maybe for some of you that's been nice not to hear my voice for a little while. I don't know. Certainly, with all my allergies and colds, it's not been great for me. That's it, folks. Have a great one.
