The Talmud, in Menachot 44a, discusses the verse in Deuteronomy where it is written: "And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of the Lord is called upon you, and they shall be afraid of you." The Talmud explains that this verse refers to the tefillin of the head.
This teaches us a vital lesson: the tefillin we wear on our heads, close to our minds, symbolize the need to dedicate our intellect to the service of God.
