FOOD LOG

February 23 - March 1, 2026: Curry croquettes, Japanese curry, fries with curry sauce

What is FOOD LOG?

What I ate last week

EPISODE 52
NEWS/UPDATES
Hi guys Happy Truck Month I’ve had an amazing week sinking into my yard from all the rain and moles. It’s like walking on a water bed. The last time I was on a water bed was when I was four or five but I’ve never forgotten it.
I forgot to include what I ate on Sunday, February 22 so I’ll talk about that later in the episode
I also forgot to mention a conversation I overheard at Peddler Steakhouse about the proper pronunciation of McDonald’s
Ordered a small, square Boos Block to replace an old OXO plastic cutting board that I was slowly ingesting. Do I need to sandblast this thing before using it? Feels like it was mailed to me directly from the saw mill. I’ve mineral oiled it deeply thrice and it’s still giving me splinters. Savory Caroline.

I reluctantly swiffered the floors and Brian came home and asked why the house smelled like appletinis; why does it smell like green apple? Why am I using this product? Why do they name Apple Martin that? I need to research products more thoroughly before buying them. I knew I hated Swiffer before I even purchased this. What are the alternatives. I’ve tried using my sprays with paper towels attached to a Swiffer and it doesn’t really work.

My review: Smokey but not in a gross liquid smoke flavoring way, layered, odd vanilla note, exciting. Made me think of going to a dark bar that I’ve never been to in my 20s. Brooklyn 2013 was spot-on. Deep, dark and rich but in a youthful way; not in a way in which it smells like the elderly. The vanilla needs to go. Fades to reveal neroli and a fresher layer.
Wore Le Labo Ambrette out to the sinking strip mall steak house; I initially shied away from this scent because it was a little sweet but also I saw it described as a scent made for women who just had a baby which made me feel weird about wearing it. It’s sweet but musky at the same time. Again, Le Labo scents are more interesting to me than anything else I’m smelling in the wild.
Wore Le Labo The Noir on a cold, windy day and it was actually a nice winter smell. Starts of smelling like gasoline like Baie 19 (the dry juniper berry, the patchouli, the green leaves... all soaked by a beautiful, luminous, magnetic rain after a long drought. And the joy that comes with it). Again, I’m hating the numbers after the name like it’s Blink 182 or a bistro. I hate it a little less when it feels like a product skew that the workers use for reference, like when you’re ordering a #3 off a menu and making it easier for the employee.
THÉ NOIR 29 combines depth and freshness, softness and strength through permanent oscillation between the light of bergamot, fig, and bay leaves and the depth of cedarwood, vetiver, and musk. A special extraction of black tea leaves wraps up the composition by bringing to the formula a dry, leafy, hay, tobacco feeling in the dry down to transform this creation into a sensuous and addictive essence.

Everyone is talking about how Ballerina Farm is having a 9th child. They’re saying wow, what a freak– but let’s look at it another way: maybe she’s actually trying to be being nice and by replacing all of the humans that have passed away from consuming her raw milk products. Maybe she’s just following utah milk law which probably says yeah you can sell raw milk just make sure every time someone dies you replace them with a kid and the Mormons are like yeah ok we were going to do that anyway. Laws written by Mormons for Mormons.

February 22, 2026 (Sunday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, Niman ranch bacon, scrambled eggs with Isigny butter, and baby arugula, made at home.

12pm: Shredded mozzarella and provolone and Texas Pete hot sauce on Santita tortilla chips, made at Brian’s parents’ house.

1pm: Oreo Thins.

5pm: Digiorno’s frozen pepperoni pizza with parmesan at Brian’s parents’ house.

8pm: Ben & Jerry’s Mocha Mood Pie Sundae.

Dressed the arugula by laying hot bacon over it and letting the grease drip over it
Mystery chicken stew with shredded carrots
I cannot be in the same building as Oreos. My first memory of not being in control of my eating is around age five and not being able to stop eating Oreos despite being aware that I really needed to stop.
Digiorno was better than I thought it would be but I also added shredded cheese and the fake shake parm. Smelled like hot dogs when it cooled down.

Would eat a whole container of the whipped topping but the dry chunks blow

Some of our best drawings were created from being locked in a room with a poster of three greased up bikini babes who were rock climbing
Roscoe ate a bag of Freshpet refrigerated dog food, a thyroid pill in a scoop of peanut butter on a Milk-Bone Maro Snack, two torn Kraft singles, and about eight slices of pepperoni. You typically have to “dress” his meals with shredded cheese or torn Kraft singles to “make them last longer”, but because of the pizza smell that was luring him away from his food bowl, I also added pepperoni, which worked.

February 25, 2026 (Wednesday)

7am: Leftover coffee with half & half and a bowl of bran flakes with milk.

10:30am: A breakfast burrito with three packets of WY hot sauce and coffee with half & half from 1922 by Carolina Coffee Shop in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Cake room: Apples, bananas, and oranges in a blue plastic bowl and a box of Trader Joe’s raspberry hearts sandwich cookies

4pm: A pour of GT’s gingerberry kombucha.

7pm: Fried rice with onions, carrots, peas, fried tofu, and fish cakes, made at home, and a pour of Raleigh Brewing Company Hell Yes Ma’am Belgian strong ale.

8pm: Blue Bell cookie dough ice cream.

The breakfast burrito was 90% egg. Probably ate 10 eggs and a single piece of shredded cheddar cheese. Salt the eggs.

Gingerberry kombucha sort of tastes like grape
This beer tasted like olive brine

February 26, 2026 (Thursday)

7:30am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home.

10am: Leftover soup.

2pm: A pour of GT’s gingerberry kombucha.

6pm: Japanese curry with ground beef, carrots, peas, and fingerling potatoes over basmati rice, made at home.

I added the NYT Cooking widget to my iphone and now it shows me a photo of a food every day and I blindly obey it and drop what I’m doing to go buy ingredients and make that recipe. I do have cooking fatigue; even Ina Garten gets it, she says. I’m willing to let the bots tell me what to do this week.
Japanese curry – didn’t have the cubes so I used curry powder, garam masala, and flour. Purple fingerling potatoes were fluffy and divine.
Not sure what is going wrong but I ate soap again

February 27, 2026 (Friday)

7am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home, and a bowl of bran flakes with milk.

9am: A cup of coffee with Coffeemate zero sugar hazelnut creamer.

10:30am: Leftover Japanese curry.

4pm: Two spicy chicken tenders from Food Lion with Sonic ranch and a pineapple flavored Spindrift.

6:30pm: Chicken tagine with lemon cheeks and La Farm baguette, made at home.

Creamer situation at work is dire; only vanilla flavored oat milk, sugar free vanilla and hazelnut, and a single peppermint mocha cup
Sonic ranch is thick, doesn’t drip. You could frost a cake with Sonic ranch. Nicely salted.
I never record when I drink Spindriff but the pineapple one is 15 calories so I thought it kind of counted as something beyond water. I love the grapefruit one the best. The CH WF doesn’t carry them anymore.
NYT Cooking chicken tagine recipe
Had some jarred preserved Beldi lemon which was gross; made preserved lemon for a moroccan lamb chili that I made for a chili contest with Brian and we almost won. Brian wore a 90s Wendy’s uniform and I wore a 90s Chili’s shirt.
Baguette tasted like grocery store italian bread but was nearly twice the price of the WF store brand baguette. Brian said it’s organic though for that price right? NO we are paying double to eat roundup

February 28, 2026 (Saturday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, made at home, and leftover Japanese curry with La Farm baguette.

2pm: Half of a soft pretzel with beer cheese and spicy mustard and a Wolkenbrau lager from Clouds Brewing in Durham, North Carolina.

4:30pm: A Ballad Brewing Kolsch, stinging garlic wings, Hakka wings, and garlic and Parmesan fries with curry sauce and ranch at Bull McCabe’s in Durham.

7:30pm: La Farm baguette with Isigny butter.

People of Reddit recommended Clouds. Local chain with 2 locations. Soft and buttery and served on a banana tree like it was a dead animal being dried out for production. Beer cheese is excellent. Their German beers aren’t bad for an American brewery. Nice and dry. I miss Dovetail in Chicago. German equipment / beer tour
Underrated food at Bull McCabe’s; doesn’t really seem like a food place if you look at their page on Google Maps. Tandurm Kitchen is an offshoot of Viceroy. A play on tandoor durham? Ballad Brewing in Danville is temporarily closed

March 1, 2026 (Sunday)

9am: Counter Culture coffee with half & half, scrambled eggs, and a slice of Niman Ranch bacon, made at home.

12:30pm: Prosciutto, black pepper croccantini, Marin Petit Truffle triple creme brie, and assorted leftover cheeses.

6pm: Screamin’ Sicilian thin & crispy frozen pepperoni pizza with sriracha.

Marin cheese had good flavor but did not ooze even when left out at room temp for hours
