Could your appearance be losing you?
Sales if you have tattoos,
long hair or piercings?
You've probably heard some chatter
from customers who've made comments
about professionalism or maybe
the team or leadership wanting
you to show up a certain way.
Well, in this video, I really wanna
dive to the depths of physical
appearance in door to door sales,
and specifically in roofing sales
to overcome a lot of the things that
we have naturally, because I know.
Two types of people.
There are those people that have tattoos,
long hairs and or piercings, and this is
how you feel comfortable and confident,
and it's who you are and you wanna bring
this to life, but you know that people
are gonna look at you a certain way.
So you kind of button up
a little bit during work.
Then there's camp number two, which
is the folks that have tattoos
or piercings that they maybe.
Don't serve them anymore, or, you know,
like gauged ears and you stopped wearing
them tattoos that you got when you
were younger and don't love right now.
So no matter if you're really proud
of how you carry yourself and you just
happen to, to fit one of these boxes,
or you have a bit of regret about past
life decisions, this video is gonna
help you get to the bottom of, of what
really matters to help you thrive.
In this business because at the end
of the day, everything that we do
here is designed to help you and your
team smash your income goal and give
every customer an amazing experience.
And that starts with how we feel.
So I'm so glad to have you here.
Welcome or welcome back.
My name's Adam Binman,
the roof strategist.
And if you know someone that should watch
this video, please share it with them.
All right, let's get started.
So, appearance, I wanna take you
on a a little journey here now.
Maya Angelo, uh, has this quote,
and, and I absolutely love it.
I'm gonna read it to you.
It says, People will forget what you said.
People for will forget what
you did, but people will never
forget how you made them feel.
I'm gonna repeat that.
People will never forget.
How you made them feel and how you
appear and how you make people feel.
I want you to think of the difference.
Yes, people will have snap judgments.
Yes, people might say mean things to you.
Yes, there are people that might not
buy from you based on how you looked,
but they're gonna forget about that.
And oftentimes that first impression
when you once interact with them,
they say, Person made me feel really
good and it's all a non-issue.
So let's go on a little
trip down memory lane.
If you've been a fan of the channel
for a while, and by the way, if you
have, I just wanna say, The strategy.
I love you and I am so
glad to have you here.
Thank you for all of your support over the
years in the evolving, which we joke about
in the office, the evolving hairstyles.
So in this video that I did is called
canvasing and prospecting, making a strong
first impression when going door to door.
So how funny is this?
Making a strong first impression.
You have professional short haircut,
Adam, and then you've got hippie
Adam with hair that's falling outta.
I always wore a hat.
I later grew my hair into a man bun
that you'll see in other videos, and
that man bun, my hair was all frazzled.
I had a bun in it.
I had to keep it clipped up and people
started asking me, As I'd been going
around doing training saying, Hey,
Adam, you know, how did people take
it when your, your hair was long?
Did that impact sales at all?
And you know what's funny?
That was the first time in
my life where I had a very
significant doubling of my income.
So let me re just say that
out loud when my hair was at.
My longest, I had the most significant
doubling of my income, which means
people didn't not take me seriously.
And at that time was when I was also
still serving as a direct response
copywriter and sales consultant
working with some quasi celebrities
and some pretty big players on their
marketing and sales initiatives.
And not one person didn't hire me that
I'm aware of because of my long hair.
And the reason for that is I was
really good at what I did and I
focused on what you can see here.
Making people feel really good,
so, How does this impact what you
need to be doing and what is, what
matters and what doesn't matter?
Well, actually, let me bring this back.
I want to pop back into this
YouTube video for a second.
This is about making a
strong first impression.
There's things we can
control right in this video.
Yeah.
I have long hair.
And you are dead, right?
People might not do business with
me, and in fact, I got a bunch of
angry comments on videos in the past.
People making fun of me saying, I'll
never trust any guy with a man bun.
I'd never buy from him.
Deal breaker.
And you know what I say?
I'm sorry that's your loss
because guess where I am today.
I am running the Roof s
YouTube channel and podcast.
I have many, many, many thousands of
customers for both storm and retail
in every single state in the US.
I'm working with some of the smallest
companies and quite a few of the top
hunter roofing companies in America.
And I'm Owens Corning's latest
sales training partner traveling
the US running trainings for them.
So I want to ask you
to this, hold me back.
No.
Now I don't share that to brag.
I share that to inspire you and say no
one can hold you back and tell you what's
good enough and what's not good enough.
Which brings me to this, your appearance.
Let's talk about camp number
one and camp number two.
Camp number one is the folks that
you have tattoos, you have piercings.
You're proud of 'em.
It's who you are, where it
proudly it is who you are.
My tips to you show up
looking professional.
, and I'll get some hate comments on this
video, I'm sure of it, but that's okay.
We're doing this for you, not for
the angry people on the keyboards.
So tucking your shirt in,
wearing a belt and looking put
together is very important.
Cleanliness is number two.
Don't smell like cigarettes
or a bar . Easy answer.
Make your sure your breath is fresh.
Make sure you're bathed and your hair
doesn't look like you haven't washed it
in months, and you're gonna go a long way.
All right.
Now there are some
people who are antigens.
Some say you should only wear khakis
or polo or a polo, whatever it is.
To me, you wanna look like a roofer.
A roofer is equipped to show up on the
roof that's wearing some sort of of.
Leveled, uh, appearance
for being up on a roof.
So that could be jeans, it could
be slacks, it could be khakis.
It doesn't matter.
But I sure as heck aren't showing
up at a house wearing dress shoes.
You feel me?
All right.
So putting yourself together
goes a very, very long way now.
If that's you, cleanliness looking, tidy,
looking professional, let the rest rock.
Just focus on being kind to people and
know that there's some bad people out
there that just are gonna judge you.
And you know what?
Life's too short to try
to please everybody.
Cuz let me tell you this, no
matter what you do, even if you
shaved your face, cut your hair.
Removed every tattoo on your body,
plugged all the piercings, got your
ears surgically, put back together.
There are still people who aren't gonna
wanna do business with you because they
don't like your haircut because they
don't like your accent cuz they don't
like you and they're not your customer.
So who freaking cares?
My point is this, be you show up
looking like you're there to do a
job, a good job, and make people feel.
Right.
Pretty simple.
Now, if you're someone that maybe you
have some of these characteristics
and it doesn't serve you anymore, I
want to give you a few really quick
pointers, especially on the tattoo side.
Number one, if you have tattoos, sleeves
are a very common one that I see that
people want to cover up because they
don't want folks having that knee-jerk
reaction or judgment on someone
that shows up at the house, whether
it's door to door or for an inbound.
So what I want you to
look for are sun sleeves.
All right?
I'm gonna just write that down.
Sun Sleeves.
These are marketed to
cyclists very frequently.
They're designed to breathe.
They're really light and they have
a little, uh, rubber, um, thing
that'll hold under your shirt.
So you pull 'em up real high, put
'em up here, shirt goes over it.
It'll almost look like you're in
a long sleeve, but they're just.
They're suns sleeves and they're
designed to breathe so you don't
bake when it gets crazy, crazy hot.
Um, again, those are are also pretty nice
cuz if you do get really hot, you can pour
some water on 'em and it'll cool you off.
So suns sleeves are a
really easy fix for tattoos.
Many people I see wearing long sleeve
shirts, it just gets so bloody hot.
So isn't an option.
Yes, but suns sleeves are a great backup.
Long hair.
All I say, make it as tidy
as you can with your haircut.
Now I had a hat.
In all my previous videos because if I
just let my hair go around and go up my
face, it wasn't long enough for a bun.
Now I know you're sitting there
judging me and that's okay.
You can, you say, Well, you
shouldn't have had it that long.
Well, guess what?
And again, let me remind you, I
donated my hair to locks of love to
give a child who needed hair to feel
confident while going through chemo
and opportunity to sport what I thought
was my lovely long locks of love.
Okay, so, um, just withhold judgment.
People are all different, right?
Any.
If you got long hair, tuck it
up, Make it as tidy as you can.
I put mine in a bun to tie it up.
I had a little tail that
popped down, so I'd pull that
up and just put a clip on it.
Just trying to tidy it up as best you can.
And on the piercing side of things, what
I will say to you, um, if you can on the
piercings, that's something you can take.
Out and put back in with the
rare exception of gauges.
If you have gauges,
just wear 'em, rock 'em.
We live in a modern
world, if you'll like 'em.
All right.
Don't worry about that.
Nose rings, especially the bowl rings
or tongue rings or eyebrow rings.
You may wish to go to a
lighter stud during work hours.
A.
Or flipping it up in a way, you
know, up the nostrils so you don't
see it when you're in the home.
Uh, facial tattoos do impact things a
bit more, excuse me, Facial tattoos and
facial piercings, cuz we can't really hide
that and people will see us and judge it.
So this is entirely up to you, Rocket,
proudly, or find an alternative
to just kind of, um, button up
some things during work time.
But honestly, there's really no wrong
answer and I don't want you to do
or not do something just for work
because life's a lot more than this.
What I love about this industry is
that anyone can come in from any
walk of life and be an amazing.
Servant in roofing sales and
make an incredible income.
And I want you to do that
just as you are as a person.
Now, I'll be lying to you if I said
that people may or may not buy from you,
but at the end of the day, who cares?
Because you get to either be a chameleon
and fit a mold or just be who you are.
And if you go through all my
past videos, I had an evolution.
I was chunkier and heavier.
I had a shaved head, I had.
Weird, awkward hair.
I had super long hair.
I had a man bun.
I cut it again and I just follow
what feels good at the time.
And the truth is the long hair was fun,
but it got really hot and it got annoying.
I didn't like it falling down.
And then I finally found a good
barber and I'm like, Oh, that's it.
I'm just gonna do, do it this way.
And you know, I do have tattoos
on my inner wrist, but I
don't let that hold me back.
And if it's ever a time that I think it
will just put on a long sleeve shirt.
We live in a modern time.
Here's my last piece of advice to you.
You have to pair how you
present with your market.
If you're in a rural, conservative
market, you're gonna stand out like a sore
throw, stand out, like a sore thumb, lurk
looking some type of way at the same time.
Come out and sell in Colorado
anywhere near, excuse me, near Denver.
And you know what up bro?
You want to go shred the naar
and jump in my Tacoma, right?
Like, this is just the, the, the
stock, the, the culture out here.
So no one's gonna think twice if
you have tattoos and long hair
because half the state does.
So just fit how you appear
with what feels right to you.
Focus on making customers feel good.
Do not let it hold you back.
And just keep in mind that long
hair is different in California and
Colorado than it might be in rural.
Fair enough.
If you know someone who needs to
watch this video, do pass it along.
My mission is to help you feel
confident in who you are and focus on
what matters most, how you make people
