What is The Estherpreneur?

Your business problem may not be a business problem.

The Estherpreneur Podcast examines what most business conversations miss: the condition of the builder behind the business.

Hosted by Edna Harding, Christ-Centered Business Architect and CEO of Favor & Wealth, this show helps founders identify what is actually limiting growth—strategy, structure, sales, leadership, capacity, identity, stewardship, or spiritual misalignment.

We question business advice that produces growth without wisdom, visibility without capacity, revenue without stewardship, and success at the expense of the person carrying it.

Expect biblical truth, practical business strategy, uncomfortable questions, and conversations about sales, money, leadership, spiritual warfare, emotional maturity, and building in obedience to God.

Because sometimes you don't need another strategy.

You need to identify what is actually out of order.

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established.” — Proverbs 24:3

Welcome to Estherpreneur, a podcast for entrepreneurs and leaders doing business and life God's way. Each week we discuss biblical and practical tips to improve your mind, business, spirit, relationships, and finances. Listen along as I speak with special guests on how to thrive in all aspects of life. Hi, I'm Edna. Like many of you, I wear many hats. I'm a military wife, mother, author, certified John Maxwell business and executive coach, trainer, and founder of Favor and Wealth, where we help the good guys win. So tune in as we bring on the light. Well, hello everyone.

Edna Harding [00:00:47]:
Thank you for tuning in for another episode of the Estrepreneur Podcast. Edna Harding here. You're a messenger of hope, life, and truth in a marketplace. I'm super excited about today's episode. I have been in a secret place and the Lord had brought up some questions that I'm going to be addressing in the next 10 to 12 episodes, and today kicks it off. Excuse me, guys, um, it's allergy season in Alabama. I rebuke those words in Jesus' name. Well, let's go ahead and just open up in prayer.

Edna Harding [00:01:22]:
Father God, Holy Spirit, Jesus, we welcome you, we thank you. Take over my tongue, Lord. Speak through me, Holy Spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen. So today's question is that we're going to address— for those of you guys who are new here, um, welcome, welcome, welcome. In this podcast, we do all things business and life God's way. And I know I promised to do videos, but it's just been a bit busy for Mama Bear, um, so I've been just doing audios for now. But I do have a couple videos coming up with guests, so excited about that.

Edna Harding [00:01:57]:
Um, but anyway, let's get started. Today's question we're going to address in this episode is, why does God feel distant? Why does God feel distant? Have you ever felt like you're grinding and you're doing things non-stop, but something is missing? Like, you're, you know, you feel exhausted. You're putting in the effort, you're putting in the work, you know, you're building, maybe you're scaling, maybe you're serving, maybe you're leading a group of a team, and maybe you're influential in your area, but somewhere in all the movement, it seems that God has been quiet. It seems as if God is distant, and you know that you've tried everything you can, and you don't know when that happened. And so today we're going to talk about, you know, that particular situation. Like, why does— why does God feel distant? Even though you seem very, very busy. Do you hear what I'm saying? So before we talk about the distance, let's talk about some truth, okay? First of all, God does not withdraw from his children ever, okay? He is Emmanuel, right? God is with us. And most of the time, what we— when we think he moved It's actually not him who moved, it's us who moved, right? It's, it's our attention that moved.

Edna Harding [00:03:31]:
You know, in the scriptures, in James 4:8, it says, draw near to God and he will draw near to you. So distance is rarely about the absence of God. It's actually us being close to him. It's about aligning with his heart. And unfortunately, entrepreneurs and leaders, influencers, are especially vulnerable to what you call this drifting. Um, not so much into sin, but get this, and this is hard for everybody, including me: self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency. So what happens is when we're too busy for, you know, stillness, we're too busy to sit down and be quiet, we actually lose connection and most importantly, it suffers our ability to get clarity and clear instructions from the Lord.

Edna Harding [00:04:28]:
Because the enemy of depth— D-E-P-T-H, not death, but depth, sorry guys if I'm not saying correctly— isn't always rebellion, it's actually distraction. And it's what I call you're building something for God without sitting with God. Do you guys hear the oxymoron? I think that's what you call it. You're building something for God without sitting with God. And unfortunately, when you're building something without intimacy, that's when it becomes heavy. That's when it becomes like, okay, this is not as joyful as I thought it would be. And, you know, one thing for sure, at least from what I've learned, is that clarity only flows from communion with the Holy Spirit. And don't worry, guys, I'm actually going to give you guys example from my personal life story where I experienced this myself.

Edna Harding [00:05:22]:
And so let's just go into— there was a season when I was in a process of finding like my niche, right? So the thing about when someone— and I don't know if you guys can correlate— when you're good at everything, you tend to be a master. What was that? Jack of all trades and a master of none. And so I had to be like, okay, well, I don't want to do it. I could do leadership, for example. I could do leadership training. I could do life coaching. I could do financial advisor. Mind you, I'm certified in all of these, and I've actually succeeded in a lot of these, right? I've done operations, I've done inside sales, I've done, um, of course, analyst.

Edna Harding [00:06:03]:
Um, I worked in finance, I think I already mentioned that. Obviously sales and marketing and management and leadership. So I, I do, and I'm certified in a lot of different things. I'm not even going to go over all the things I'm certified in. It's on my LinkedIn, on my, on my resume, and it's obviously on my, my website. But I remember I was having this conversation and with somebody that I highly respected and someone that I, you know, that I looked as some kind of someone who's like over me, like is very wise. And he said something like, you know, you should really just help people with sales and marketing because that's your background, you know, you're really good at it. And, you know, that's all pretty much your experience and you should work with startups.

Edna Harding [00:06:49]:
And, and so I pivoted from doing what I felt God told me to do, which is not just work with startups but work with everyone, like corporations and established businesses and so forth, and just focus on startup for a season. And he was right. That was actually my skill set. I know how— I understand strategy, I understand growth, I understand revenue. And so I leaned into that for a while. I built offers around it, I served from it, I scaled with it. And on paper, everything made sense because that was my background, like the bulk of my background, although actually it was kind of like half and half. But I was— that was an area that was— comes really so easily for me, right? But as I was just focusing on sales and marketing, because I kind of switched it a little bit, you know, something felt off, like inside of me.

Edna Harding [00:07:45]:
Have you guys ever felt that where you're like, I'm doing what I'm— I know how to do, but it just doesn't feel right. It seems like I don't have the joy, I don't have the peace. Um, and so I was really doing some soul search and asking God, okay, okay, Holy Spirit, like, is this what you called me to build? Like, is this something that you qualify me to do? Obviously, because I do it, but I feel like I'm leaning on my gifting. Because as I mentioned before, if you haven't heard already, if you guys are new here, the difference between a call and a gift— a gift is something that is easy for you, something that God, you know, just puts in you. Like, you could do it like while you sleep. I could do sales and marketing all day, all night. Like, it's super easy for me. But a calling is something that you're not qualified for, but he qualified you because you're called, right? There's a difference.

Edna Harding [00:08:41]:
So I guess what I'm saying was my background equipped me for sales and marketing, but my calling was so much deeper because I wasn't just anointed to increase revenue, although that's something that I did for a living for a very long time in corporate, um, and also for clients. But I was called to help sons and daughters of God tap into the mind of God. To hear specific divine instructions for their assignments, right? And, um, and that was something that I didn't do like, oh, okay, I'm just, you know, gifted at that. That's always— I've done— no, I didn't have any experience doing that. But because of me seeking God, because of, you know, my time with the Lord, I've learned to hear his voice. I've learned to see his character. I've learned to see how he works. In everyday things.

Edna Harding [00:09:38]:
Um, I could go outside and I could see God speaking through like a, you know, like a, a sign, or, um, like he speaks all the time. But you know, when you don't know what you're looking for, like, think of it like— thank you, Holy Spirit— think of it like, you know how, like, for example, you're buying a vehicle and you've never seen that vehicle before, and then now because you know that vehicle that you're interested in is in your subconscious mind, now everywhere you look you see that vehicle, right? I forgot what it was like we were buying, but something like— oh, it was like an EV for— I think it's a Rivian or something. And I never saw Rivian in my life, and then all of a sudden my husband tried telling me, but now I see Rivians everywhere. My point is, if you're not subconsciously— if you're not aware that God is there, or if you're looking for God, you're not going to see him. Does that make sense? And so what I enjoy doing is I enjoy helping people see and hear the mind of God and hear the voice of God in mundane things in their business, um, and get strategies and instruction from the Bible regarding their business and really just involving him in the process of building their business. And that's something that brought me joy. That was something that excited me. That was something that, you know, although not everyone gets it, and although like I probably lose money because I, I say that that's part of it, that is exactly what is going to separate me from my peers because that is what God called me to do.

Edna Harding [00:11:12]:
Does that make sense? I hope this makes sense. So, um, when I finally admitted that I was operating from skill instead of mantle, the distance I felt started to make sense. So it wasn't that God had left, it was the fact that I was building beneath what he called me to do. Because I remember he said a long time ago, um, I think it was in 2014 or 2015, he prophesied over me using a prophet. Um, this gentleman's name is Prophet Victor. He said I don't— I didn't just call you to the natural. I called you to the spiritual. I called you to teach people on the spiritual things.

Edna Harding [00:11:53]:
And that really resonated with me because I was doing that, you know, the whole helping people get rich thing. And I'm like, oh, it's still not satisfying to me. And then when I heard that, I was like, that makes sense because I don't just teach you how to build external riches. I teach you how to build internal riches as well. Right? Building your soul, making sure your soul is prospering so that you will prosper extra in the natural. Does that make sense? And so what happened was once I realigned with who I truly was, embraced who God created me to be, the joy returned, the peace returned, the clarity returned. Um, because what happened was I was intimate with the Lord, I knew what he called me to do, and I just walked in it. And now it's just so fulfilling.

Edna Harding [00:12:44]:
And he provided, even though I did lose some clients because not everybody is into that. In fact, today, in all transparency, I had a sales call with a young lady, and the first thing I said is like, hey, listen, I just want you to know that I involve the Holy Spirit in my strategy sessions, and I talk about scriptures and this and that. Without even talking about my pitch for my programs, I flat out said, this is who I am. And she was kind of like staring at me nodding and smiling. And I said, I'm not ashamed of it. And long story short, um, towards like the middle of it, I said, are you a believer by chance? And he said, yes, I am. And I was like, okay, cool. And so my point is, like, I, I stopped trying to get people's business, if that makes sense.

Edna Harding [00:13:33]:
And I, I purposely repel them by being me so that I attract the people that loves me for me and wants me to operate the way God created me to be. Does that make sense? All right. And then I remember another story where— not another story, but this is true. So back in Houston, was it— was this 2014? I don't remember. Or 2015? I don't remember. I'm sorry, guys. I was the chairman of the Spring Klein Chamber of Commerce during that time, and I had I had a client, he had a nonprofit. I don't know if it's a ministry or nonprofit organization that served emergency responders, so the EMTs and things like that.

Edna Harding [00:14:25]:
And the mission of it was he wanted to minister to them because they see a lot of trauma and a lot of stress, and he wanted to minister to them. It was born in prayer. I don't want to mention names, but if you know who this person is, don't say anything. Well, you can, but it's a really sad story actually, unfortunately. It grew quickly. Favor was on it. They sponsored a bunch of events. But with growth, what it does is it creates pressure, right? And I remember what happened was, you know, I was involved after this happened.

Edna Harding [00:15:06]:
So let's just kind of back up a little bit. So he, because he outgrew his pace and it was above his, like, in his, like, he couldn't keep up. He had to hire people that were more seasoned to be part of the board. So he brought in a more seasoned board. So think about, like, impressive resumes, think about, like, strong financial backgrounds, like operational expertise. Very bottom-line driven. But the problem was they did not carry the revelation for the vision God gave him. So they understood sustainability, but they did not understand assignment.

Edna Harding [00:15:47]:
I hope you guys are hearing me because this is very, very important. Because slowly what happened was numbers, as far as revenue and sponsorships, became the primary language. So metrics became like what they measured instead of what the mandate was for this founder. And eventually the board voted him out of the very organization he birthed. I think it was like $20 million by the time, um, he involved me towards the end. And unfortunately, like, it was like towards the latter end, and then all of a sudden he told me, hey, they let me go. And he had to move into like a tiny home in, um, on the lake, like in Texas. I forgot the name of the area, but it's like by the lake.

Edna Harding [00:16:35]:
And I was so grieved to hear this, you know, because, um, he, he just kind of got bamboozled almost, right? So he didn't lack passion, he didn't lack his calling, he knew exactly what he called me, but because he invited governance that did not understand the spirit of what God has entrusted to him, he lost the very thing that he built for many years and grew successfully. They let him go. And, and this is, this is the rude awakening. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's time for us to tell the truth, is that when vision is God-given, it must be God-guarded. So You can't just ask, hey, are they experienced? Do they have, you know, this, this, and that? The question you really need to ask when you bring people to help advise you for your business is, are they aligned with who God is? Or are they aligned with what God said? Right? That's more important than revenues and numbers, my friends, because if you completely focus on metrics instead of the heart of the Father, you can miss out. And that could actually open up some traps. For you and your business. And so this is so important, um, that— and it happens more often than you think, my friends.

Edna Harding [00:17:57]:
You know, the structure can outpace intimacy very quickly. Um, the enemy uses that to tempt you to continue again to rely on yourself and to, um, think that, okay, more is more. But in reality, sometimes less is more. You don't want You don't want to— oh goodness gracious, like, you want to go at the pace of grace. And this is why— thank you, Holy Spirit— there is a scripture that talks about wealth that's gone little by little is better than wealth that's gone in haste. And some people who become an overnight success, they're not ready for the weight of that success, and they can lose it instantly because their character and their process and their maturity is not ready for that success, which is why I highly suggest that if you guys are looking for counsel, if you guys are looking for governance, that you find people that sees the vision and sees the call over your business and your life, um, through God's lens, through God's heart, because that's what's going to help you build something that lasts. Does that make sense? Um, and so this is not a— just want to say this is not a fear story. This is more of a stewardship story that, you know, you really, as a founder and as a CEO, like If you're going to bring people on board, especially if they have authority when it comes to decisions, make sure you bring in the right people.

Edna Harding [00:19:23]:
Okay. Um, and the third story that I wanted to share, um, that I think is also going to help with this episode, and I'm going to wrap it up here, um, quickly, is what God needs us to slow down sometimes, right? He, he, he wants us to be so close to him. And sometimes the way he does that is through like giving you a break, giving you rest from the labor. Um, I am the type of person that I don't like to rest. I don't like to slow down. I don't like to stop. I want to keep going until I finish everything. And the thing about me is there's always something for me to do.

Edna Harding [00:20:07]:
Um, I've learned lately and recently that just because I could do a lot of things doesn't mean I have to. Like, it's— yeah, I could get ahead, but if God doesn't want me to get ahead, like, I need to be obedient to the Holy Spirit. So I wanted to talk about a time of my life where, um, God really wanted me to slow down, um, in a way that I didn't plan. And that was because of motherhood. So when my husband and I got We got married, we got pregnant right away, and then after I had given birth to the first child, I was pregnant again with the second child. So they were back to back. We're in the middle of moves. It was during COVID And as you know, I mean, COVID wasn't that long ago.

Edna Harding [00:20:53]:
So I have a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old right now. It was rough. And let me tell you that motherhood confronted every illusion of control you thought you had. Okay, so all you moms out there, all you wives out there, you get it. So all of a sudden, I wasn't readily available, okay? I was— my capacity was not very much because I had stuff to do, right? I had all— I— it was like a 24/7 job, right? Having a newborn and a toddler, okay? Two kids under two was not fun, okay? My energy was shifted. I was tired, right? I was exhausted. I could no longer build the way I used to. So those long strategy days, gone.

Edna Harding [00:21:38]:
Endless calls, definitely impossible. Overpacked calendars, not sustainable. And at first I felt like I was being limited, and I honestly complained, and I blamed my children, I blamed my husband that I had to slow down. But in reality, when I look back, hindsight is 20/20, it was actually refinement, right? God was stripping away complexity and What he did is, because I knew I only had a few focus hours, what would actually matter? And in that season, he brought back strategies he had given me years before. So it wasn't like new revelation, it was refined revelation. So it's something that he showed me before, and it's like, okay, like, what is it that you wanted to focus on? This is why I come up with the glory zone, like, identify What is it that you absolutely love to do that's easy for you, doesn't take up a lot of time, and people value it, and so you could charge high for it, right? So what happened was I had all these blueprints before that had overcomplicated my situation because of my ambition. Now he simplified it because I surrendered, because I'm like, okay God, obviously this is not working. I only have like 3 or 4 hours a week at one point, or maybe less than that, to work on my business.

Edna Harding [00:23:01]:
Like, what does this look like? And so he, he simplified my life, he simplified my business, um, in my surrender. And although yes, maybe I at that time I didn't make a lot much money, but I was fulfilled, I was satisfied, and I was making money but not as much as I could have. And it was okay because I was raising my children. And most importantly, he showed me what worked and what didn't work. So he showed me how to build simply but still excellently, meaning build things for my clients as far as like offers and solutions that actually works. So he took something that was overcomplicated and made it so simple for me to execute. So no more, not a lot more offers, not a lot more noise, not a lot more striving, but clarity, precision, and alignment. And here's what shocked me.

Edna Harding [00:23:54]:
Was that when I built from that simplicity and obedience to the Lord in my, in my mind, like the most stressful season of my life, results became more consistent. It wasn't like fast, it was like steady. You know what I mean? Like customers started coming trickling in to the point that like, okay, now I have 12 clients and it's not hard because I have all these systems built. Does that make sense? So it just kept going, going and going. And then I was able to create my group growth program to do like help more people in a short amount of time. Or like, like me, I don't have to be on a call with them every single time. I made it affordable for them. Then I also have my high ticket clients still that I meet on a monthly basis, right? And it's not like an everyday type of thing, but like twice a month.

Edna Harding [00:24:41]:
And so it's doable. Do you guys hear what I'm saying? And because I built systems that had some automation in it, a lot of the things that, especially now with AI generation, AI capabilities, like some things that would take me many, you know, I don't know, weeks would take me days, right? And so my point is, because of our— my surrender, because of my stillness, I was able to get some strategy and clarity from God on how to still build while still building. What I mean by that, still build the business while building my family and building my children and building my husband. Does that make sense? And, and it wasn't because I was doing more, but because I was finally building from what he originally instructed, right? And he wanted me to have a what? A life that's filled with joy, peace, right? Abundance and overflow, right? He's a God of order. And so in my mind, I thought motherhood was shrinking me back or slowing me down, but in reality, it actually purified it. It purified my ability to steward my business better. It forced me to lead from, you know, essence, like the essentials, instead of excess, the shows. And, you know, like the, oh, I'm trying to compare myself to everyone saying like, I made it, look how successful I am, right? I stopped caring about the outward things, and I focus on the most important things, which is the God things.

Edna Harding [00:26:12]:
And then that's slowing down. My relationship with the Lord also deepened. And I— the extra time that I normally would focus on my business, I focused on God, and it just sharpened me even more to now— I mean, I, I don't even know how to say that, but I feel like I'm in la-la land. I can't believe this is my life. Like, I can't believe this is what I get to do. You know, my children are both in school now. I have more time for my business. Obviously, I can serve my clients, but even though, even though I can serve my clients more, meaning I have more hours, I don't— I still work as if my children were at home, you know what I mean? Like, instead of working like all day, all night, like, I just work a few hours a day and still get paid the same.

Edna Harding [00:27:01]:
Can you imagine that? Like, I work less, but I still get paid the same, and actually more than when I worked a whole lot. Okay, so This is the beauty of slowing down. This is the beauty of surrendering to God and asking God for clarity on how to build your thing, right? Because strategy then becomes cleaner because now you don't have a lot of noise, right? Does that make sense? I hope this makes sense. So, you know, to wrap this up, let's just be clear. The enemy isn't growth. It isn't strategy. It isn't expansion. But the enemy is distraction.

Edna Harding [00:27:40]:
The enemy is busyness. The enemy is building so fast that you forget to listen, and the enemy is making decisions from pressure instead of God's presence. And the enemy knows that. He's actually comfortable with you being productive as long as you're not connected to the source, which is the Lord Jesus Christ, right? Because what happens is disconnected entrepreneurs and leaders eventually burn out, or they build misaligned structures. And that— and even scripture says, unless the Lord builds its house, the labor is in vain. So what if— remember, we started with the question that God is distant. Actually, what if God isn't distant? What if he's just waiting for you to be quiet? What if the silence you feel isn't absence but actually an invitation for you to step away from a season of busyness and come away with the Lord. You know, stillness actually is probably the best thing.

Edna Harding [00:28:48]:
And you know, you hear this a lot, you know, in like the creative space and, you know, out there in the world. But I mean, stillness isn't equal for unbelievers and believers. Stillness, you know, um, you know, it's so funny because I, of course I don't only hire Christian coaches and advisors because unfortunately, um, that's just part of it. And so I had to learn the systems of the world for me to be able to decipher which is the systems of the world and the systems of God. And long story short, you know, they talk about, you know, hearing one's thoughts and sitting down and watching yourself breathe and focus on yourself and focus on— and that is not the stillness that God is talking about. The stillness that God is talking about is focusing on his truth, focusing on his word, focusing on Jesus, his character, you know, focusing on the faithfulness of God, focusing on the visions God gave you, focusing on his, on his instructions. It's not just to focus on yourself, because then again, even if you have stillness and you're focusing on yourself, again, what are you doing? You're depending on yourself, right? You're sustaining yourself, okay? And you're not going to be able to get the strategies you need if that's all you do. Okay, so here's what I want you guys to do over the next weekend, um, because I normally promote— promote this, sorry, I publish this on Fridays.

Edna Harding [00:30:12]:
I want you to schedule some quiet time, even for just 5 minutes, um, not to prepare content. And I know this is easier said than done because I can't tell you how many times I'll be trying to spend my time with the Lord Before I used to do it in my office. Now I turn everything off, I go to the dining room. But even in the dining room, you know, I— the formal dining room, because like I'm feasting on the word, that's how— that's why I choose the dining room. I get distracted easily. So, and by the way, guys, just some practical— if like, for example, you're doing your devotions or spending time with God and all of a sudden like, oh, I gotta do this, I gotta do that, you know what I've done? I have a to-do notebook in my side. I just write it down and I get back to God because otherwise you're going to be distracted all the time. Like, even if you try to concentrate, you can't because you're like, you're, you're looking at that to-do, you're, you're thinking about all the things you got to do versus just writing it down, putting it aside.

Edna Harding [00:31:06]:
So that's a little tip that I've learned. Okay, um, sorry. So you want to ask God a question. Lord, is my leadership, or is my building this business aligned with your heart? Okay, ask God, like, am I still in tune with your spirit? Am I still hearing your voice? Am I still following your plan? Take and then hear what he says. And this is not— no, like, this is not like weird. He'll tell you. Like, if you just be quiet, you'll hear yes or no. Very simple.

Edna Harding [00:31:44]:
Where you're— especially if you know, like, well, how do you know if it's God? How do you just watch? We're going to talk about that in the series, actually, but Just have faith, childlike faith. Just ask God, okay God, am I building this according to your ways and according to your thoughts, according to your plans, according to how you originated, you know, this? Like, am I building it? And just be quiet and hear him say yes or no. That whisper on your right ear or your left ear, sometimes it comes from inside, that is not you, that is God. Don't question it, okay? All right. All right, so let's wrap this up, guys. Remember that if God feels distant, don't feel— don't assume or feel like he left you or he's abandoned you. Sometimes what he does is he truly doesn't want to slow you down because he refuses to let you build misaligned. So the delay and the wait is actually for your own good.

Edna Harding [00:32:46]:
Because he limits your capacity, he limits your productivity to protect your calling. He loves you, he'll protect you, he'll slow you down, and it's not the devil, it's him. And sometimes what he does is he'll quiet your world to restore your hearing because you're wondering, like, well, why did I lose that client? Or why, you know, how come I didn't get this opportunity? It's because you're too distracted by the noise. He wants you to hear his voice. Remember that your success is not measured by volume, it's actually measured by obedience. And that when you return to simple instructions and return to just being still before the Lord, and maybe even returning to the strategies he already gave you from many years ago— sometimes you got to pull out that journal from like 5 years ago and be like, oh God, what did you tell me to build again? Because I feel like I moved too fast and I forgot what your heart is. Build simply, my friends. Build simply, build excellently, build from that heart posture of like, God, this is your business, not mine.

Edna Harding [00:33:48]:
God, this is your organization, not mine. God, this is your book, not mine, right? And watch what God does, okay? Watch what God does in your life and your business.
