Hello, we're the unqualified culinary critics, a podcast centered around food and cultural experiences. We want to not only share our own perspectives, but hope that these stories connect in some way to each one of you as well.
Unknown Speaker 0:21
Our first guest is a friend of mine for over three years, we met in a journalism class in college and headed off from there. So please welcome my friend Daniel.
Unknown Speaker 0:30
Hi, I'm Daniel.
Unknown Speaker 0:33
Wish I could say a little bit about yourself.
Unknown Speaker 0:35
Yes. So um, so yes, yeah, we met two years ago in a journalism class. And we were assigned as teams to I guess, to get to know each other. Right. It was like a, like, we had to write an essay about each other about what we know and stuff. But yeah, I studied journalism and UNLV. I graduated What 2021, I believe. But yeah, ever since then. I've been trying to do same thing as you're doing, trying to create a podcast make it happen, but we're here. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1:11
That's good. Yeah, it's been a while since we actually spoke or talked. I mean, we just communicate through texts. So
Unknown Speaker 1:18
basically, yeah, but we keep updated with each other, I guess. Yeah, we do.
Unknown Speaker 1:21
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 1:22
Thank you. Thank you for the invitation.
Unknown Speaker 1:24
Yes. Thank you so much for coming in. We really appreciate it. Anytime. Alrighty, so today, we're going to be talking about cravings. And does anybody here want to define what cravings are just in case people may not really know what it means? Or like I've heard of it, but I never really got the full gist of it. Yeah, I can. Alright, I'll give it to you.
Unknown Speaker 1:49
So it's basically just an intense desire for certain foods or flavors. I feel like that says on the nose as it's gonna get. But yeah, I'm sure everybody has had one of these before.
Unknown Speaker 2:03
Yes.
Unknown Speaker 2:04
So anybody want to go over their cravings, like any current cravings that they have, or past cravings experience, like, you know, just something that they really wanted to get?
Unknown Speaker 2:17
I guess I'll just go. Um, I know, we've talked about this kind of with like, our comfort food, but like chocolate chip cookies, I crave them all the time. And also, they are my comfort foods. So I think that's like the most common common craving that I get. I don't know if you guys have like that one food that you just like, one all the time, or if your cravings are just like random things, because I feel like for me, sometimes I'll just, like crave the randomness thing, but most of the time, it's a chocolate chip cookie.
Unknown Speaker 2:53
That's cool. Yeah, I
Unknown Speaker 2:55
don't really have any, like constant cravings. I'm not the biggest sweets person. So it's kind of rare when I do crave sweet stuff, but if I do, it'll usually be like ice cream. But um, yeah, it really just depends because I go through phases of like, different foods that I like, want or eat right now. But yeah, sometimes it'll be spicy stuff as well.
Unknown Speaker 3:23
I think oh, sorry. Good. Oh, no, you can go then I'm with you. Like, I'm not a very sweet person. I guess. I can eat chocolate and candy and stuff like that, but I'm more of a spicy or like salty things. But usually my cravings are, especially like when I'm working on something or like watching TV. Usually, my cravings are, or my only craving is a hot Cheetos. But I like to put either like cup of tea or to Lulu. So I know it's really bad for like your stomach and stuff, but they're so good. And you're like I remember when I was in UNLV like for homework and stuff. I will have like a hot Cheetos bag next to my computer and just like munch on that and then have all my fingers read. But yeah, I think my craving will be hot Cheetos. Hot Cheetos definitely is a thing. And I don't know if it counts, but like I'm addicted to coffee. I don't think that's crazy. That's more like an addiction, but I crave it most of the time too. So it's like, I mean between those two.
Unknown Speaker 4:30
What are your cravings? Ashley?
Unknown Speaker 4:33
Well, they're not really the healthiest, but sometimes it's just like, it comes to me. And then I feel like I want to eat it. But sometimes I just I don't know, like do I really want it or something like that because it's just really a matter of is this good for me and how good is it for me to like put this down my system you know, so sometimes I would crave like in and out or steak or sometimes even like crepes or that kind of stuff. But I don't really eat sweets. I have a situation that kind of runs in my family on one side. And basically, it's called tonsillitis. So I try to avoid eating a lot of sweets as much as possible with the exception of fruit and the fruit juices. So that is like one way for me to still remain healthy. But cravings. It's like, I have it once in a while, but I don't really crave it crave a lot of things simultaneously, but yeah, I mean, that's what I can put out.
Unknown Speaker 5:33
Well, I have a question for Sierra and Daniel, since you guys say that you like would create a spicy food? Is there anything like in particular that you crave? Or is it just anything that's spicy?
Unknown Speaker 5:48
For me, I'd say it could probably be anything. Um, I don't eat hot Cheetos too much just because I like always get nauseous after I eat them. But pretty much like just anything spicy for me.
Unknown Speaker 6:05
Same I mean, I don't think I don't think I can do like, like a raw jalapeno or things like that. But basically anything spicy like candy spicy. I prefer spicy candy than sweet candy. I do prefer to get hot Cheetos instead of like the regular Cheetos. Even like for food, I think I need to have like a little bit of spice in order to feel like like I like it for the most part like given like, like you mentioned in and out. Like I have to get like their peppers that they have. I like to get that on the side. But But yeah, I guess anything spicy will work for me.
Unknown Speaker 6:44
Question for Daniel. Have you tried talkies? Have you heard of them?
Unknown Speaker 6:49
Oh, they're good. But yeah, they're dangerous. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 6:55
Yeah, that's funny, because my brother just put me on to those. What is it cheddar and sour cream flaming hot ruffles. And like, I'm not very much of like, like, I'll eat spicy food. And I can handle it. But I don't like to. But those are so good. Like, I literally cannot stop eating them. I went to Target and bought like two giant bags of them. Well, they have a cell that was just like, You know what, let's feel this new addiction that's coming in. And like I actually like have been craving those. So it's really weird craving spicy food food for me because like, I do like sweets a lot. That's usually what I crave sweet food.
Unknown Speaker 7:44
That's good. I mean, you know, it's we have our own kind of craving. So like, don't feel that you're kind of the only one here that likes to eat the sweets and stuff. Now I think a lot of people would love to eat a lot of sweets, but at their, at their pace and stuff. Yeah. But I mean, I'm kind of with everyone in regards to the spicy, but I'm kind of a little bit different. I don't eat spicy stuff all the time. And I don't I rarely crave a lot of spicy foods, but I do I have before crave Indian foods and their cuisine is usually not all but some of most of their dishes are spicy by fear. Yeah. But I mean, I don't eat spicy stuff all the time, like I just said, but I think it's a good, good feel. But sometimes I can take it but then I'm like, Okay, I gotta get a napkin to blow my nose or some water. I mean, water isn't really the best drink to finish after eating out. Usually it's milk. But when I'm at the restaurants, they don't have milk, or you have to order it or something. So it's like, yeah, I'm just gonna drink water and cool off a bit.
Unknown Speaker 8:51
Yeah. Question for you guys. Have you ever had you know how? Like, usually pregnant women will have like the craziest cravings like that pickles of peanut butter kind of thing. Have any of you guys had weird things like that?
Unknown Speaker 9:09
Have to think about this? I don't think so. Because I like to think that what I eat is normal, but I'm sure somebody else will be like ill. I don't know. I guess like, I guess like the craziest cravings I get will be like, apples or lengua. But I that's not really that bad. It's just weird for most people who like, you know, have never eaten the cow tongue. But I don't think it's that weird.
Unknown Speaker 9:43
No, I don't think so. I mean, my dad like Tom before so. I mean, I've hear about Tang and my family.
Unknown Speaker 9:51
Yeah, I don't know. I mean, I like to I'm like all good cravings for like the lemon Lay's and then like, I'll still Add even more lemon or lime to it. And I'm just put like, apathy on it. I used to crave that a lot all the time. I'm like, I haven't been so bad. I haven't eaten that in a while though.
Unknown Speaker 10:15
No, I don't think I have a weird craving. Know.
Unknown Speaker 10:19
What about you, Sierra?
Unknown Speaker 10:22
Honestly, I don't think so. I'm not adventurous enough to try. Like the weird things that I've seen people do. Like some, like even condiments, I normal condiments. I just won't eat because something about it just is odd to me, like sometimes catch up. I don't know why, but sometimes I'll just get grossed out. But I can just be an extremely picky eater. So I don't think so just because I know that I'm not as adventurous as other people are. But I guess like those weird combos taste good. So hey, who knows?
Unknown Speaker 10:57
Yeah, I would echo sear on that as well. But I mean, like, I never really had adventurous cravings. But I mean, I mean, I'm craving some stuff right now. Like, I want to eat a Philly cheesesteak, because I'll tell you a story. And this has nothing to do with the whole adventurous craving thing. It's more of just I crave something in general. So like two months ago, I got my wisdom teeth pulled out. And of course, when one gets their wisdom teeth pulled out, they can't really eat the solid stuff right away. It takes a matter of time for their gums to heal. So of course, I had to start I had to stick scuze me to eating the soft stuff. So I mean, I would have soup. I made risotto, all that kind of stuff. But I mean, when I had the medication with me, it's like, please, I want to eat this stuff. Like no, you can't because you don't want to hurt your gums. You just I mean, you went through all that trouble with getting your wisdom teeth pulled out and you're going to disrupt is like, No, you can't do that. But part of me just craves a certain thing. I just want to eat that stuff. Like I mean, I have a list of stuff. I don't know if you want to hear it. But all I can say is that was like probably a big craving issue that I had when I was recovering from the surgery. And I'm still gradually are slowly starting to eat the stuff that I ate before I got the surgery, but it's still taking a matter of time.
Unknown Speaker 12:15
I'll hear some of the things on your list. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 12:18
I want to hear what's on your list.
Unknown Speaker 12:20
Okay, so like, back then I try. I wanted to have pizza like well, you can't have pizza because the bread is hard and it's hard to chew. And you don't want to hurt your gums. I can't eat that sending going to Philly cheesesteak, and crepes. I'm like, I can it's manageable, but just have to choose slowly but I wouldn't eat it like three days after the surgery. No, I would wait maybe about a week or two. But it really depends on your gums. So it's a it's not a one size fits all thing I would say it's more of just when you're ready and when you feel that you can handle it and stuff. So like I'm basically listing out the not healthy stuff. Like I craved a fried chicken. I want to have like a broccoli cheddar soup from Panera that I can eat because that's soft. And it's basically liquidity. But I'm like yeah, and then it's just a matter of like it's kind of frustrating to have those cravings while I'm while I'm while I just got out of the surgery. So it's just it's like you want to eat it and you just really want to do what you have access to it. But you can't because you don't want to disrupt your gums and you have to go back and you have to repair it and so like no.
Unknown Speaker 13:31
Oh, I have Well, I mean, I had my wisdom teeth taken out last year too. And I'm I feel that I feel that pain. Because I remember the day after my wisdom teeth got taken out. My mom made this like spicy pineapple chicken that she never makes like she'll make it like once every like five years and it's so good. And she made it the day after I got my day out. So I'm like no, that has first off. It's solid and it has spicy food and I couldn't eat it and I was so upset. I was just there like angrily eating my apple sauce while everybody else got to enjoy the pineapple chicken and like I still crave that today because my mom because I didn't get to eat any Mmm. I'm like, why would you do this to me? Oh, wait, no, I was just like, Why? Why would you make this one? I can't eat it. And she's like, oh, I'll just make it once you once you heal. It's been over a year. I have not eaten a spicy pineapple chicken.
Unknown Speaker 14:37
I mean, you can just ask. I know. I mean, if you crave it so badly, just say please, can you make it because you promise?
Unknown Speaker 14:46
Yeah, you're right.
Unknown Speaker 14:47
I need a bag. determination that goes right there too. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 14:52
I feel that pain though not being able to eat because of your wisdom teeth.
Unknown Speaker 14:57
Yeah, the pain is frustrated. You can't do a lot after the surgery.
Unknown Speaker 15:02
And your food is so limited like even though you can figure it out, like putting applesauce smoothies, like things like that, like it's still so, like limited for a good amount of time. Yeah. And there's only so many flavors of each thing that you can eat. Like, I remember I got mine out like four or five years ago. Worst thing, like never. It was so bad. I do remember, I think, off topic of cravings. But the first night that I got them out, I remember I was eating and my whole mouth was numb. And I could not eat because I couldn't figure out like, I couldn't drink water. Or I would like choke on my food because I couldn't feel anything. So I didn't know if I was like actually eating or drinking. It was terrible.
Unknown Speaker 15:50
Oh my gosh. Sounds like a nightmare. It was
Unknown Speaker 15:53
terrible.
Unknown Speaker 15:55
Yeah, I've never gotten my wisdom teeth taken out. So once I do that's gonna be rough. Yeah, cuz what is so good?
Unknown Speaker 16:03
Yeah. I mean, if you don't need to get him pulled out, that's up to you. But when you get him out, you have a long road to recovery. But in the end, it's worth it. You know, because what happened with me, I didn't want to get it out. But my Tito have so many, my dentures are too much like they have so much teeth and gums. So of course to have to happen, otherwise, I'm going to be in pain. So I mean, in the end, it is worth it. And then you can just eat things freely, but carefully.
Unknown Speaker 16:32
Does anybody go through like phases with foods that they eat at all? Like if you eat a certain kind of thing for a little bit? Because, I mean, if you've been craving it, and then you finally get it, and you're like, oh my god, this is the only thing that I'm gonna eat for like a week straight. Do any of you do that to or now?
Unknown Speaker 16:50
Yeah. That's like me right now. With the chips. I haven't been eating them every day, but I have been eating them more than I usually will eat chips. But I already know, like, in a week from now, I'm like, once I run out, I'm gonna be like, Yeah, I'm over it. But right now I'm like, It's all I want.
Unknown Speaker 17:15
I don't think I do have like a regular thing I eat but I don't have like something that I will say, I want to eat every day. But I know. Usually, once a week, I have to eat carne asada fries. But it's something I crave, like, I wait i to like, crave it and be like, Okay, I'm getting them now. Because it's nothing that I will be like, Oh, let me go get some food and I'll get some credit it was it's more like a craving. It's more like, Okay, I'm craving it today. I'm gonna read it today. So that phrase is my thing right now. That's good. Do you do that to Ashley or no? No,
Unknown Speaker 17:52
I'm a little different. It's like when I crave a certain thing. Like if, for instance, I crave a steak and I want to get it badly. I'll get it. And then that's it. I'll just wait until I prove it again. Basically.
Unknown Speaker 18:04
Have you guys ever, like, crave something really bad? And then you finally get it? And it's super disappointing.
Unknown Speaker 18:11
Yes, yes. Just last week,
Unknown Speaker 18:15
what would you get?
Unknown Speaker 18:17
So there's this place, I used to go there a lot more when I lived closer. It's like a little like, like a Mediterranean like bowls. Or you could do like pizza wraps. It's on Eastern. And I think like Sunridge. So it's like right by Anthem. Anyway, we used to go there all the time. When we go in the first thing I see is that the prices went up like six bucks. And then I ate it. And I had been wanting it for so long. Because I don't think I'd been there in like two years. And it was just so bland. I had never tasted such bland food. I was so disappointed. Oh, no. Yeah. And for $15 and it was it was not a good amount of food for $15. It was a little insane. But it sounds like a lot. Yeah, so I probably won't go there anymore. But yeah, what about you guys?
Unknown Speaker 19:16
I kinda went through the same thing with what you went through Sierra. But yesterday, we went to a restaurant. I'm not going to give the name just in case. This might give them bad publicity. I'm not going to do that to them. But I ordered her chicken fajitas and I'm like, I haven't had that in years because I haven't been to that place in over I guess three years. And when I had the fajitas I told them to put the sauce on the side, but they didn't give me the sauce and I'm like it's okay, because I don't want to waste it. So I had the chicken by itself. It's like, Okay, not bad. Not as superb as I had it in the past. So it's like when I crave something and I eat it's like okay, good. I'm I'm much better now, but sometimes I'll be like, I eat something and then, okay, that's it.
Unknown Speaker 20:07
Yeah, I feel that I was craving a burrito the other day for burritos and I went and got one and it was kind of disappointing. I'm just like, dang, maybe you do only need to go here at 2am The only time it hits
Unknown Speaker 20:26
you grab a burrito and I'm thinking I gotta good is one food truck near my house because they have good carne asada burritos. I just haven't had the chance because like, I want to go like I did go recently, but they ran out there. Carne Asada burrito. So my mom and I are craving that I just gotta find time to go there before they run out.
Unknown Speaker 20:48
There early then. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 20:50
I mean, we did. But somebody was ahead of us. And like, while they were there first, so we just gotta give them right away. But I mean, that stuff that place is popular. And hopefully when we go back there, we will not be disappointed. What about you, Daniel?
Unknown Speaker 21:06
It's usually goes to my surprise, like, because that's the only thing that like I crave. And I wait until I crave it. So willing to make him right. I'm just like, but I always go back. But I only go to one specific place like I don't get into whatever else anywhere else. So. So yeah, when they don't make them right. I'm just like, like, why?
Unknown Speaker 21:29
If you don't mind me asking, do you want to reveal the location or the location slash name with the restaurant or not? Where it's,
Unknown Speaker 21:35
it's, it's done toward taco but there's only one specific one that I go to, which is on Craig. I'm thinking to Gator. Okay. But yeah, because I've tried to ever under another don't have tacos. And they're not the same thing. So maybe their sauce, maybe their spices? I don't know. But there's something about that plays that they make them different.
Unknown Speaker 22:00
It could be the cook style, too.
Unknown Speaker 22:04
I do, though, we're only go to a specific location of a restaurant because I know how they're going to make it. And certain ones all aboard some like wow, wasn't that good? I'll skip it.
Unknown Speaker 22:18
Exactly, ya know, even though like it's the same ground, you know? Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 22:22
I don't know. Like Ashley said, it could be like the cooking style, or even just like, what ingredients they have that maybe another one doesn't. Who knows? Like it can be the most random thing. Or it can be the same and I'm just telling myself, it's different, but I will go out of my way for the better food.
Unknown Speaker 22:43
You Yeah. Um, have you guys ever had like, cravings that are like, really random and just surprise you like, recently, I have been craving Chipotle. So bad. I have only gone there once in my life. And that was like four years.
Unknown Speaker 23:02
Don't go again. Just
Unknown Speaker 23:07
I don't know why I've been craving it.
Unknown Speaker 23:11
I do the same thing with Chipotle. But it's the kind of thing where it's like, it's really a hit or miss. Like, sometimes it's good. And sometimes I'm like, I just spent $9 on this. And it was not worth it. And all it did was like, make me feel gross. I don't know, it's definitely a hit or miss. But I do that with a lot of, I guess more like fast food restaurants. But in that moment, I have to have it.
Unknown Speaker 23:39
Yeah. And then it's disappointing. You're just like, Why did I do that? I didn't
Unknown Speaker 23:44
know. I will say to that. I've noticed because I've talked with my friends about it before too. If we're like, oh, like what's around here? Let's get some food. It's like, oh, Panda Express is right here. And it smells so good. Like so good. And then I eat it. And I'm like, Okay, well, the rice is hard. Like there's no flavor. Like it just it. I'm so sorry. Because it smells so good. But each time I go it just it doesn't taste good. And I'm disappointed.
Unknown Speaker 24:19
I feel like pandas one of those hit or miss?
Unknown Speaker 24:22
Yeah. Good a few times. It just most of the time. I can't do it. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 24:30
I mean, I never had Chipotle. So the reason I don't go is because I keep hearing stuff on the news saying like, Oh, E coli and this and that. So I'm like, I'm just kind of Oh, yeah, avoiding Chipotle. And my opinion about panda is like, I don't really go that much and I'm not really ironically I'm not really independent expressed, but I've had it before, but I've had that hidden Miss experience. And as of right now, I just don't feel like going anytime soon.
Unknown Speaker 24:58
No, yeah, don't go anywhere. Yeah,
Unknown Speaker 25:01
yeah, I feel like that happens. Every fast food restaurant though. Like, it's always like, sounds really, really good and you eat it. And it's either like, good or it's disappointing. Especially working in a mall with not a food court, but a bunch of like food restaurants around. It's like, oh my gosh, I want that so bad right now, and I've been wanting it the past week. I'm finally gonna get it. And then it's like, oh, that was it. And then I'm pissed off about it for a day. And then because I can't believe I wasted money on it, and then I'm fine.
Unknown Speaker 25:40
Yeah, like, sometimes your cravings will mislead you.
Unknown Speaker 25:44
Yeah, cravings are super random. Yeah, like sometimes I'll crave food that like family makes that I haven't had in a few years or it'll be like actual restaurant food. But it's usually like, I never really get cravings for sweet things. I'm just not a sweets kind of person.
Unknown Speaker 26:04
Um, it's funny because like, I'll crave sweets. And then like, half the time I eat them. I'm just like, oh, I shouldn't have eaten this. Start feeling sick. I'll do the same thing. Yeah, but the only suite that has never done that, to me has been chocolate chip chocolate chip, either the real ones. Those are classics. Yeah. True classics. Yeah, everything else. Like I had some chocolate covered pretzels yesterday. And I ate like five of them. And they're like the small ones. Not like big ones. And I was just like, Why did I do this? afterwards? Like, I hate getting older. Sweets aren't hitting anymore.
Unknown Speaker 26:50
What about you, Daniel?
Unknown Speaker 26:51
Um, what the Caribbean thing? Yeah, like that in
Unknown Speaker 26:55
general and and fast food thing.
Unknown Speaker 26:59
Fast food is usually McDonald's. Their fries. They're so good. So fries. I don't know. There's something about their coke. That always tastes good. But if I tried to get something else, I'm just like, No, why did they even get this? No, but the fries is always and I tried to make sure, like, be specific about and be like, make sure they're fresh. You know? Because when they're like just soggy. They're not the same. But but they usually get with the phrase there.
Unknown Speaker 27:28
That's good. You would trade in and out fries.
Unknown Speaker 27:31
I don't like him. I mean, I have tried to but they're not my favorite. That's okay.
Unknown Speaker 27:34
I think we're like the opposite on that. But that's okay.
Unknown Speaker 27:39
Have you guys ever done the thing where you dip your fries in the milkshake? No.
Unknown Speaker 27:45
I'm leaving this Zoom meeting. No, I haven't. But does that sound good?
Unknown Speaker 27:54
I'll admit it doesn't really sound appealing to me.
Unknown Speaker 27:57
I don't know. I've never done it. But I try it. Just to see.
Unknown Speaker 28:02
Is it kind of a little bit even though it's like on the other side of the realm? dipping your pizza and ranch or dipping your fries?
Unknown Speaker 28:11
Yeah, I feel like it'd be like to kind of like, different but same kind of things right there. They're like super popular things to do, but I haven't done it and I don't want to.
Unknown Speaker 28:25
Okay, that's fine. cuz I'll admit right now we're talking about this. I kind of want fries and ranch. So random craving.
Unknown Speaker 28:33
I want a donut. Nice. Yes.
Unknown Speaker 28:36
Doughnuts are so good. I hate cake donuts.
Unknown Speaker 28:41
Yes, no, I am carrying like a Krispy Kreme donut or something like that. Yes.
Unknown Speaker 28:49
Yeah, I'm still craving Chipotle for some reason.
Unknown Speaker 28:53
Right after you get it. I'm sure you'll feel different. Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 28:58
Yeah.
Unknown Speaker 28:59
So does anybody have any final thoughts about any cravings? Like, is anybody craving something right now? I think somebody said that they crave a doughnut. So like right now, right?
Unknown Speaker 29:09
Donut? Yeah. Donut and coffee will hit me now.
Unknown Speaker 29:13
That's a good time. It's like almost 10 Actually,
Unknown Speaker 29:16
yeah. Let me call him Uber Eats or something.
Unknown Speaker 29:21

Um, I don't know. I'm thinking about spicy foods. But that's just me. But we do want to hear from you guys. And we want to know what you guys are craving. So you can go ahead and tell us on our Instagram and Twitter, and then tell us which cravings you agree with which ones you don't. And then yeah, so thank you guys for listening. And we'll see you guys on the next episode.
