FACTS
Animal Collective – Walker
- For our history feature today, it is the subject of that particular song by Animal Collective. Scott Walker passed away three years ago today at 76, who was a 1960’s pop icon turned avant garde and experimental rock master in the ensuing years and not the former megadouche governor of the great state of Wisconsin/failed presidential candidate.
- While he met his end in England, he was originally from Ohio, and this song is a tribute to the man that they wrote in the immediate aftermath of hearing about his demise, with the band citing him as a major influence.
- You can find that on Animal Collective’s most recent album Time Skiffs, which just dropped in early February.
Nature TV – Mike Fake
- A band that’s been getting praise far and wide for their last couple of EP’s. Nature TV hails from Brighton and this tune just dropped on March 11, apologies to the band and their manager Bernie Peters as this one just didn’t quite fit in last week’s taste test of the indie truffles.
- Definitely a band on the rise, and clearly much more so due to getting aired consistently on this show, titan of exposure and taste that it surely is.
- We gotta have them on the show.
Belot – Math
- Belot is a 22-year-old London-based alt-pop artist who is quickly getting a lot of attention. Her new single, “Math” comes to us via Submarine Cat and Neon Gold Records.
- She describes her music as “awkward pop” and after listening to her catalogue, I can see why. Her music is catchy and indeed pop, but there is a strangeness to it all that I do find very appealing.
- She says that “Math” is about not wanting a serious relationship in your youth. Even though you may really care about someone, you just can’t find it in you to truly settle down and be in a dedicated relationship just yet.
Depression, Mom - once in california
- This band’s coming straight out of Philadelphia with a song called Once in California. First of all, I want to say I love the band name, and that’s also the reason why I first decided to give their new release a listen. The song opens with sweet vocals and a simple guitar riff that instantly reminded me of the popular garage rock band, The Strokes. Once the hook hits there’s a distinct surf-pop flavor that gets added to the mix and helps set this particular song apart from your basic indie-rock jam. A great midday 4pm-the-sun-is-just-about-to-set song.
Michael court - Keedy’s
- Michael court is a rising singer-songwriter based out of Los Angeles. He lives out of his car and says he likes to get inspiration for his work while he has his hands on the wheel. There’s always something pure about singer-songwriters who can piece together beautiful music without any outside intervention. Similar to auteur cinema, I feel like it allows artists to really hone in on whatever emotion they’re trying to evoke in their audience. A fun little fact, he says his first introduction to playing guitar was on the console game Guitar Hero. Have a listen to his debut single, Keedy’s.
pecq - Same Mistakes
- Pecq is an alt-pop duo that is currently based in London. The duo is comprised of Oxford natives, Niko O’Brien and Hannah Jacobs.
- Just recently, they released their second EP. The EP is called ‘Brittle’ and it comes courtesy of Upcycled Sounds.
- “Same Mistakes” is the last track on the EP and I must say, if you haven’t checked out the EP in full yet, do go and check it out, it is definitely time well spent.
- This new single is very layered and full of interesting harmonies, very tasty stuff for your ears for sure.

The Lovelines - Dark Thoughts About A Pretty Flower
- The Lovelines are an American brother and sister duo. “Dark Thoughts About a Pretty Flower” is only their second release so far and I think it is fantastic.
- The song is about giving into temptation and participating in a forbidden love affair. The band says that the song is inspired by a story of a young woman who is enraptured by a rose that is trying to make its way to the sunlight.
- The struggling rose is supposed to be a metaphor for the forbidden love affair. Musically, I love how groovy and dark it is. My kind of tune, no doubt.
The Yves – Who’s Gonna Hold You Tonight
- For those unfamiliar, this is a duo comprised of Stevie Perry and Jake Randle who’ve been around as The Yves for a few years now, this being their latest single that just dropped March 10.
- This is the the lead song to their upcoming EP Sleeping In, which is both out April 6 and one of David’s favorite Saturday activities.
Yot Club – u don’t know me
- This is a great lo-fi solo project out of Mississippi by a nice ummmm…chap…I think that’s what they say in Mississipp…who goes by the name of Ryan Kaiser, although he’s now based in Nashville.
- Nothing larger announced with this single that I could find, by whatever keep an eye out for this guy his stuff is always VERY cool.
The chats - struck by lightning
- A lot of times you’ll come across bands that sort of sound like such-and-such, or remind you of that one band you used to love, but that’s usually it. In this day and age where there’s an endless stream of acts popping up and disappearing just as fast, it’s rare to find a band that seems to stay true and blue to one particular style. It has to be insanely difficult for a band to come up with a new sound within an existing genre, while still staying true to its roots. The Chats is just that kind of band, and punk rock is their game. If you were ever a fan of the ramones, iggy, or even lars fredericksen and the bastards, you won’t be disappointed by this awesome band coming out of Sunshine Coast, Australia.
Ex-poets - bay of pigs
- Ex-poets is a group created by Jordan Brooks and Colin Killalea. They started recording together in 2017 but they say they met much earlier, almost a decade ago, in New York at The New School. The song opens with awesome synthesizers that seem to peel back the veil before the vocals start to hit. Their understanding of each other’s sound really shines; everything flows together seamlessly. From the synth sounds to the fuzzy vocals and the harmonizing backup vocals, it’s all good.
Girlhouse - paul blart mall cop (“fucking” 0:56)
- Girlhouse is the moniker of fast-rising indie bedroom-pop artist Lauren Luiz. She is originally from Portland but is now based in LA.
- She’s released two EPs in the past 18 months and “Paul Blart Mall Cop” is her brand-new track.
- It’s a very personal track. She says that it is the story of her struggles with depression. She has dealt with depression for the majority of her life and she says that the song is about wanting to give up on living, but also not wanting to die.

Jonny Perrins - Mr. Crazy Daze
- Based out of London, Jonny Perrins has just released his first single, Mr. Crazy Daze. The first thing I felt was a strong punk influence that comes out through his vocals and the guitar riffs. It’s exactly the type of song you hope to hear when you stop by a club looking for something fresh and exciting. Near the end of the song, there’s a bluesy interlude where you get a better sense of some of the different influences that Perrins brings to his work.
Salsola – Disappearing
- Salsola is a band from Stockon-on-Tees, England. I had to do a quick Google search because I couldn’t believe that such a place name existed but I learned that it is in fact a real place.
- I don’t know, for some reason I thought it was some kind of golf joke or something.
- Anyway, Salsola’s new cut is a sort of a reminder to the listener that there’s more to life than the usual mundane stuff. It’s an invitation to step out of your comfort zone and be wary of the predictable routines that we can so easily fall into.
Lyn Lapid - The Outsider
- Lyn Lapid aka Katelyn Lapid. She is a young Filipina-American from Maryland. She started making Tik Tok videos when she was 17 and quickly became a viral sensation. She literally has millions and millions of views and likes online.
- “The Outsider” is her new single taken from her forthcoming debut EP. No official details yet but I’m sure we will hear about it very soon.
- She says that this song is about growing apart from the people whom you’ve grown accustomed to being around. For her, those relationships were with her high school friends. She saw everyone around her growing up and doing their own things with new people and she started feeling a bit like an outsider.
JW francis - sweet as a rose
- JW Francis is an artist based out of NYC and on his own instagram he labels his music as lofi/jangle, dream, slacker, bedroom pop. Though that might sound like a mouthful, once you give “sweet as a rose” a listen, you’re going to agree that there’s no better way to put it. This bubbly warm tune reminded me of Phish’s classic Bouncing around the room, in that it seems to tap into the same vein of positive good vibes. If the guys from phish were born in the 21st century, maybe they would’ve ventured into some of the same lofi bedroom pop as JW francis has?
Private Agenda - Dressed in Velvet
- Private Agenda is a very cool duo comprised of Sean Phillips and Martin Aggrowe and they are based in London and Berlin.
- Their sophomore album, ‘A Mannequin’ is set to drop on April 29th via Lo Recordings. Their newest offering, “Dressed in Velvet” is a smooth and supple disco-pop tune. The track is very lush, and very sexy, and I’m definitely liking this one a lot.
- They’ve only released one other single so far from their forthcoming album. That track was called “Neo-Nostalgia”. It’s quite different than this new one but it’s equally well-produced, I am genuinely looking forward to the release of ‘A Mannequin’.
Jose gonzales - El invento (Sofia Kourtesis remix)
- Sofia Kourtesis is an artist originally from Lima, Peru, but who currently works out of Berlin. This song is a remix of a Jose Gonzales song by the same name. She adds hauntingly sweet vocals and ambient touches to what was originally a simple acoustic number. Sofia manages to transform Gonzales’s work into something completely novel, to say nothing of the original. The bells and her soft feminine vocals add an ethereal, dreamy quality that perfectly complements Gonzales's voice. Enjoy this buttery smooth house remix.

Ryan Egan – We Do It On Purpose
- Our favorite American in Paris is out with this new single to his upcoming debut album Soft Power, the third preview of the LP out to date, and this just dropped last Friday night.
- We’re also very excited to announce that Ryan will be our guest artist selector on April 1, no foolin, the week before Soft Power drops and we’ll get a couple early listens to some of the other joints on the LP.
Vero – 22:12 (“fucked up year” - 1:33)
- Vero is a trio from Stockholm, Sweden and the group has an interesting origin story. The trio were originally DJs and they came together with the idea of starting a club night together.
- They did so and played old disco tunes but eventually decided that they wanted to play their own music instead. They all were going to rock shows and loved the genre so that is how their rock band got started.
- The band is getting set to release their debut album very soon. The album is entitled ‘Unsoothing Interior’ and it is slated to drop on May 6th. Their new single “22:12” is a song about being lonely and leaving the party early and defeated. They describe it as an ode to someone else’s happiness, of which you have no part in at all.
WaTa & Augustine Dunn - On My Way
- WaTa is a Hungarian DJ and producer and he teams up with The Silver Spoons’ singer Augustine Dunn for this new offering. “On My Way” is the title track for WaTa’s upcoming new EP.
- Musically, the track is just sounds super fresh. The track has some harsh guitars over what sounds like an island or tribal beat. Augustine Dunn’s vocals add an extra layer of interest and overall, I just really like the vibe of this tune.
- WaTa says that the album should be out in a few weeks so be on the lookout for that one.
Shafkkat - mosquito tweeter
- This is an exciting techno/deep-house number from the artist named Shafkkat.
- He’s known best for his electronic dance grooves and his latest release, mosquito tweeter, is right up that same alley. In an interview, Shafkkat says that this song was inspired by the sounds of his home base, London. While I was giving it a listen, it felt like I was getting a peek behind the curtain at the raw, energetic beauty of London’s urban jungle. It feels like the perfect song to blast while cruising through the city on a Saturday night.
Sadurn – Golden Arm
- This is the 2nd single to drop from the Philly-based artist’s upcoming debut LP called Radiation.
- The band is lead by singer-songwriter Genevieve DeGroot, who says that she didn’t think much of the song when she wrote it, but once the band played it together and developed it, the song was really something she thought was special.
- Radiation is out May 6 via Run For Cover.
Bored at my Grandmas House - Detox
- Bored at my grandmas house is the alter ego of Leeds based artist, Amber Strawbridge. She says that she grew up on PInk Floyd and David Bowie, and we can hear hints of both in her new release. It’s a beautiful low-fi piece that also boasts melancholic lyrics that really just hit you in the feels. It’s even more impressive when you consider that she did away with formal music lessons early on in life and her piano, guitar, and drum skills were all self-taught. If you’re looking for a nostalgia trip, this is the one you want to listen to.
