What is Progress and Perfection?

Recovery themed, Christian flavored daily reflections for those struggling, recovering, or seeking understanding.

Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬

This is the whole point of sponsorship—that we would point toward that which is greater than ourselves.

Yes, it’s easy to put people on pedestals. Especially when they’re good people doing good things and helping in many ways.

Ultimately, though, we who have been relieved of the obsession of addiction and have moved out of the endless cycle of sabotage know that it’s not of our own volition, but rather it has been a gift we have been given.

We didn’t even seek it out, but were told that this is the way.

Surrendering to our plight would not have been our first choice had we not been instructed in this way.

Coming to terms with having no power still does not seem as though it is the way to freedom.

Confession, repentance, amends, prayer, service…while we would not speak against such worthy pursuits, we never dreamed they would be the practical means by which we might finally abandon the death march we had been on.

Thank God for those who came before.

We have had it easier than they because of their willingness to pass on the message.

And the best examples know that it is not them who have achieved victory, but God through them.

Must not there be something, someone that we can all point back to, though? Aren’t we as prone to failure as if we were on our own if all we do is point to the man who came before us? We will all be pointing backwards at another fallible person if that were the case.

Instead, let each of us point to and rely upon God who has all power and has freed us.

God, thank you for letting me be a part of your great work.
