Welcome Back Kendra
---

[00:00:00]

Audra Dinell: [00:01:00] Today we have a guest on the show that you've heard from before. You know her, you love her, but this time we're taking a different angle. Welcome to the show Kendra Moody. Hello. Welcome back.

Kendra Moody: Thank you.

Audra Dinell: We haven't podcasted together in person for a hot minute, though.

Kendra Moody: Not just the two of us, yeah.

Audra Dinell: I know.

Kendra Moody: We've done some team ones lately, but yeah, it hasn't been... We haven't done it in a while.

Audra Dinell: And those were virtual. I know. That's

Kendra Moody: true. Now we're here. I know. In

Audra Dinell: real life. IRL. On

Kendra Moody: each other's laps.

Audra Dinell: Yes, we are. Hello.

Why Health Gets Neglected
---

Audra Dinell: So many of our listeners know you as our COO and head of community at The Thread, but your passion that you've had for many years since I first met you has been health and wellness. So today you're showing up in the hat of Business owner.

Kendra Moody: Correct, [00:02:00]

Audra Dinell: yes. Founder, coach, health coach for Restore Health Coaching.

Kendra Moody: Yes. That is the hat that I'm wearing today.

Audra Dinell: So the reason I wanted to have this conversation is as I'm having in real life conversations about people's second acts- Mm-hmm ... a thing that comes up again and again is having neglected our health- Yeah ... having neglected our wellness because we get busy in life, and we're achieving, and we're caring for others.

Mm-hmm. And you, in your practice that has expanded- Yeah ... you see a lot of women like this.

Kendra Moody: Mm-hmm. I mean, I think it's similar to the things that we talk about at The Thread, but as women, it is our inclination to care for everyone else first. So most oftentimes, especially as we're growing our families, we're having babies, we're taking care of our children, we're making sure that they are at all the [00:03:00] activities, and then as they age and become more independent, that's when we get to maybe start taking care of ourselves.

Or from a career standpoint, if we are hustling, trying to earn the promotion, make it to where we want to be from a professional standpoint, our health often gets put on the back burner- Mm-hmm ... until we've achieved that. And so I hear all the time, "Well, now that I'm done having babies, I can focus on myself," or, "Now that my kids are grown, I can focus on myself.

Now that I've made it where I want to be in my career, I can focus on my health and wellness."

Audra Dinell: Yeah. I think that's very relatable. I mean, life just gets busy.

What Wellness Really Means
---

Audra Dinell: When do you feel like... Okay, first of all, when we're talking about health and wellness- Mm ... , what are people talking about?

Like, what do you at Restore Health Coaching help with?

Kendra Moody: So what I think about [00:04:00] when it comes to health and wellness is how you're living your life. So it's how you move your body, how you nourish your body, how you talk to your body, your mindset, um, your environment. So it's, all-encompassing of how you show up and live your life.

There are different ways to talk about health and wellness in today's social media craze. It could be going hard, training for the marathons, burning it at both ends, restricting food, all these different diets. And what I have learned through my own experience is that that's not building a lifestyle of health and wellness.

That's trying to achieve a goal for a specific time in a specific period, but that's not building longevity and true wellness.

Audra Dinell: Well, and I think that's what I love so much about your brand and the [00:05:00] organization that you've built to help women, is you're using words like nourish and wellness. Mm-hmm. And that to me just feels so much more aligned with what I need.

I feel like- Yeah ... in the season of life with business and kids and, you know, our capacity is stretched, I- don't necessarily want one more thing to, like, push me to my limit. Right. You know? Right. Yeah. Like, I wanna take care of my body- Mm-hmm ... well. And so I even just love the words that you're using, restore.

Kendra Moody: Right. Well, and it's, it's a mindset shift.

Mindset Shift to Restore
---

Kendra Moody: So going back, when I was a child, I was active, played sports all year round, and transitioning to college, decided not to play at the collegiate level. And so I still lived at home, and that's when my dad and I started working out together. So we would do driveway workouts.

We'd go on walks and runs, and that's when I [00:06:00] fell in love with caring for my body. But my mindset was very different. It was like, I have to be active. I have to do this to lose weight or to tone up, It was very much restrictive. And I think the beginning of my journey, and for many years through trying to start our family, everything was about how hard can I go and how little can I eat.

Hmm. And it was more of a punishment, so my mindset was very different then. , And I was never, I never felt good in my body. And so over time, and through our journey and trying to start a family, the mindset that really shifted for me was, gosh, I need to care for my body, not punish my body. It's not, I don't work out so that I can go eat pizza.

I can do both things and enjoy both things, and it's that mindset shift that can [00:07:00] really be powerful when you're looking at, okay, can I do this long-term? This is a lifestyle that I'm building, not a, I can never have pizza again, or I can never go celebrate birthdays because I'm cutting out sugar, or I can't go out to eat because I don't know what I'm eating at restaurants.

Audra Dinell: Yeah.

Kendra Moody: It's that balance of, how do I build a lifestyle around caring for myself in a way that does help me reach my goals and live my life?

Audra Dinell: Yeah. I think that's so relatable.

Eat More Protein
---

Audra Dinell: What other types of stories do you hear women bringing in with them when they're coming to work with you?

So

Kendra Moody: one of the most common things that I work with women on is eating more, and not just more food, but specifically protein.

Audra Dinell: I was gonna say dun, dun, dun. [00:08:00] Yeah, duh, duh,

Kendra Moody: eating more. Right. It's a surprise, right? Yeah. But there, over time, and I think that there are messages that we receive as women, there are things that you see in social media, and the perception is that you have to eat less to lose weight.

Now, part of that is an equation. You burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight, but there is a certain point where too little is too little, and your body will hold on to everything you consume because it feels like it's starving and it doesn't know when it's going to get its next round of nourishment.

So one of the most common things I see when first starting to work with women is that they are really under-nourishing and trying to build up eating more whole foods, healthy foods, versus eating less of everything.

Audra Dinell: Okay. [00:09:00]

Meal Prep and Treats
---

Audra Dinell: So- I'm curious about habits because- Mm-hmm ... I think you personally have some really cool habits that I've learned a lot from over the years.

And I know you meet every client where they're at. Yeah. And so your habits don't necessarily need to look like other people's habits. But talk to me about your meal prepping habit and how you build in, , those treats for yourself, and you might use a different word. Yeah, no, treat. For me, in my head, I'm thinking like the glass of wine- Yeah

the cookie, the things that I love. But, you know, we've had some conversations where- Yeah. ... I'm like, "Well, how many treats do you have a day?" Treats do you have, yeah. And you're like, "Ooh, yep, that's where it is." That's, yep. Right there.

Kendra Moody: That could be. You know, and I, truly think it's, it goes by the season.

So , I love meal prepping. And the way I think about it, and it's interesting, I was talking to a client earlier, and the thing I always think about comes back to when we, [00:10:00] read Atomic Habits by James Clear. And the reason I meal prep is to make it easier for my future self to stay committed to the goals that I have.

Audra Dinell: Yeah.

Kendra Moody: Because if I'm left to my future self, who is trying to get the boys to school, trying to get them to soccer or martial arts or whatever we have in the evening, I'm gonna go for what's easy and what's there.

Audra Dinell: Yeah.

Kendra Moody: So if I can meal prep for myself, I know that my future self will be able to pull that out and make it.

I oftentimes try to put systems in place that allow my future self to not have to make the decision, just go with what's there. As it relates to treats, man, I love me some treats, and I firmly believe it's, it's a season. , And the thing I also think a lot about and work with my women on is- [00:11:00] Do you want to meet, do you want to meet your goal so bad that you would take out all the joy of any of the things you love, of chocolate, of the lattes, of the occasional glass of wine?

Is that worth getting to a goal that is a number on the scale? If it is, then okay, let's really work hard towards that. Let's recognize that this is short-term.

Audra Dinell: Mm-hmm.

Kendra Moody: And then let's work to balance so that we can build that back in. Or is it just a mindset shift of finding more of a balance so that you can have those treats every couple days, have that be part of your routine, but still love yourself for it?

Yeah. And I think a lot of times we can get in our head that when we get to this weight or when we look this certain way, that's when we can have the treats. That's when we deserve that. But we deserve it all the time if it's something that we love. It's just in moderation.

Audra Dinell: Well, and that sort of that yo-yo [00:12:00] thing of- Yeah Act this way, eat this way, work out this many minutes and this hard until this- Mm-hmm

and then I've- Right ... made it, and I don't have to do any of that anymore, and then it falls back. Right. And so I remember one time, especially during the holidays, you and your family have a super fun tradition of making all of these treats. Is this Halloween? The Halloween. Mm-hmm. Yes. Okay. Yeah. I was gonna say I'm- They'll be coming soon.

Okay, great. Can't wait. But you've talked with me about, like, looking forward in your week and just seeing where your spots are gonna be. Yeah. So maybe you have a happy hour with friends one night, or maybe you know you're gonna be baking with-

Kendra Moody: Mm-hmm ...

Audra Dinell: family, and so just being mindful week by week-

Kendra Moody: Yeah

Audra Dinell: of where those spots are so that when you get there, you can enjoy, but you know that you have focused more on the protein and the- Yeah ... whole foods and the nourishment-

Kendra Moody: Mm-hmm ...

Audra Dinell: of your body outside of that. And someone said this once, and I always loved it. Like, sometimes you need to nourish your body, and sometimes you need to nourish your soul.

Kendra Moody: [00:13:00] Yes. Yeah.

Audra Dinell: And I just thought, ooh, sometimes that's- Yeah ... so true ... that chocolate just

Kendra Moody: nourishes the soul. Or like a good g- like if you're- Yeah ...

Audra Dinell: if I'm out at a restaurant, Lottie's my favorite restaurant- Yeah ... in Wichita. Like, having one of their meals and a great glass of wine, I'm like, heck yes. Yeah. Like, that truly, I cannot put words to it.

Like, just feeds my soul. It's not about- Right ... how delicious the wine is or-

Kendra Moody: No ...

Audra Dinell: it is al- okay, it is about- It is ... how delicious the food is. Yes. Yeah. But it's just like that experience- Right.

Kendra Moody: Yeah ...

Audra Dinell: just is a lot

Kendra Moody: to me.

All or Nothing Trap
---

Kendra Moody: Well, and I just got back from a girls' trip- Yeah ... in Nashville. We went for one of my dearest friend's 40th birthday, and I had more drinks than, I mean, we ate out almost every meal.

We went to different shows. We had most of our activities were centered around moms taking a break from their kids, having fun and- Yeah ... having drinks. And I made sure that every day I woke up and I did some meditation, [00:14:00] I grounded, I said, okay, I'm gonna follow what my body needs. But I had a drink almost everywhere we went.

Audra Dinell: Mm-hmm.

Kendra Moody: But I didn't beat myself up about it, and I didn't say, and this is the other mindset that I work with women a lot on, is it's not all or nothing.

Audra Dinell: Right.

Kendra Moody: I didn't, I don't have to show up and say, "Well, I had one drink, so I might as well get, throw in the towel and just, you know, call it quits and go all in."

Right. Or if you wake up and it's donut day at your kid's school and you go enjoy the donut, then you're like, "Well, my day is wrecked. I'm just gonna now eat all the junk food."

Audra Dinell: Right.

Kendra Moody: So it's being able to pause and say, okay, it's, I can have this treat because I'm nourishing my body all other times.

Audra Dinell: Yeah.

Kendra Moody: I can go out and have pizza night on Friday with my family because it's their favorite thing to do because I know that the rest of the week I'm choosing foods that nourish my body.

So it, it truly is [00:15:00] a little bit of planning-

Audra Dinell: Yeah ...

Kendra Moody: and thinking about, okay, what, what do I have going on this week, and - how do I want to live? What are my goals? Where do I want to go? And am I living like a person who is already there?

Audra Dinell: Mm. Yes. That's come up so much in my conversations recently. Instead of living from where you are, living from the identity of the- Yeah

person that you want to become. Right. Applies to your health journey.

Where to Start Today
---

Audra Dinell: So if people are listening and they're like, "Yep, that's me. I'm feeling like a health and wellness journey is a part of my second act," where do they start? And the people who are listening probably have real lives with real... They definitely have real lives, but they have full lives with real demands.

Kendra Moody: So where I would suggest anyone start is doing an examination of, okay, where am I currently at? What are my current [00:16:00] habits, and what are my actual goals? Like, what goals do I want to have? Where do I want to better myself? Do I want to get better sleep? Do I want to feel better in my clothes? And then really look at how you're living your daily life, and you, you have to do that through a sense of being honest with yourself and saying, "Okay, do my actions actually align, and are they taking me closer to where I want to be?"

And a lot of times I hear, "Well, I don't have time to work out." And so often sometimes I'll say, "Okay, so walk me through your morning schedule. Walk me through your evening routine." And it'll be like, "Well, I do these few things, and then I get on my phone, and sometimes I'll scroll for, like, 20 or 30 minutes."

And it's like, well, that would be- That's workout time ... one really good workout. Yeah,

Audra Dinell: yeah.

Kendra Moody: Yeah. You think that you don't have time, but when you really put a magnifying glass on the things that are taking up your time each [00:17:00] day, you can see where there might actually be pockets where you could sub one activity for another.

Maybe it's, like, one activity that's taking you further away from your goals or really isn't adding any value-

Audra Dinell: Mm-hmm ...

Kendra Moody: and add in an activity or something that takes you closer to your goal. So it doesn't have to be an overhaul. That was a really long-winded way of saying examine your current habits, look at the goals that you want to achieve, and then look at the gap and see where the behaviors are or aren't aligning, and start tweaking them one by one.

Audra Dinell: And I think that's the consistent message that keeps coming through is instead of the big overhaul- Mm-hmm ... notice that 20 minutes that might typically vanish in thin air on social media and take that and have a short 20-minute workout, and that- Yeah ... will build over time.

Kendra Moody: Yep.

Protein Movement Hydration
---

Audra Dinell: So if you're a woman in your 40s and [00:18:00] 50s, what do you think is important to prioritize for energy, wellness, and physical body?

Number one is protein. And how much protein do we need?

Kendra Moody: So there are, I mean, you could Google and find many different ranges of protein. What I encourage my clients to do is about one gram of protein per pound of body weight. If you have a bit of weight that you're wanting to lose, go for your ideal weight.

So if you, let's say, you're around 140, my goal is to eat around 140 grams of protein every day. Now, I also lift weights three to four times a week, so if I go above that, I'm not worried about it. That actually fuels my workouts better. But I definitely try to not go [00:19:00] much lower than that. And an easy way to do that is really bu- build every meal around protein.

What protein are you having for breakfast? If you like eggs, if you like bacon, turkey sausage Greek yogurt, if you like oatmeal, add a scoop of protein to it. So trying to find ways to infuse protein into every meal. The older we get it's much harder re- to retain our muscle. Our bone health is so important, and so protein is the main thing.

The second is just movement. You think that a workout has to be you going to a gym, sweating at a class, nearly passing out, you know, getting your heart rate to its max every time, and that doesn't have to be it. It could be a 20-minute walk. It could be some stretching. Just moving your body and finding ways to do that every single day can really help with longevity.

And [00:20:00] then the last one that is so important that we often forget is hydration.

Audra Dinell: Mm.

Kendra Moody: Making sure that you're drinking enough water. You're also having electrolytes so that your body can utilize that and absorb the minerals is really helpful, too, as we age.

Audra Dinell: Do you drink electrolytes every day?

Kendra Moody: I did, and I'll be honest, I, so I, we drink Elements, the LMNT.

Mm-hmm. And I kind of got burnt out on those, so I'm still trying to figure out how to bring electro- electrolytes back in. Element's a great brand, and I had been drinking them every day, but I just kind of got burnt out. Yeah. So I just focus on water now, and will bring them back in when- I'm back, not over them.

Audra Dinell: Yeah. I, I went through the same thing- Yeah ... where I was, like, drinking them every day. Yeah. And they're expensive too. They are,

Kendra Moody: yeah.

Audra Dinell: So I now drink them when I want them- Yeah ... and just don't really pressure myself- Yep ... to drink them. But I have them stocked because, yeah, I went through, [00:21:00] like, drinking them- For sure

a lot, and then I stopped. Yes. And then I was like, "Oh," because I also heard that it helps with your skin-

Kendra Moody: Mm-hmm ...

Audra Dinell: drinking electrolytes-

Kendra Moody: Oh, yeah ... and just

Audra Dinell: keeping the hydration in your skin.

Kendra Moody: Well, if, you think about it, if you are just, like, downing gallons of water every day, all that's gonna do is flush your system.

And so electrolytes are what will help you absorb-

Audra Dinell: Mm-hmm ...

Kendra Moody: the minerals. And so you think about your skin being dry. If you're flushing everything, your skin's not able to absorb. So- Hmm ... there's a lot of benefits to adding electrolytes in because it allows your body to use the water rather than just flush it.

Audra Dinell: And usually I think about electrolytes more in the summer, but- Right, 'cause you're sweating a lot ... I get dry skin in the winter. True. I mean, like- Yeah ... I have dry skin, but- Yeah ... in the winter it gets worse. Yeah. So that's a great idea. Okay.

GLP-1s Explained
---

Audra Dinell: So what about GLP-1s? I'm hearing a lot about them. What are they?

Kendra Moody: Why are they kind of everywhere? Man, [00:22:00] this is, like, the hottest thing right now, and I am going to stay very high level. And a GLP-1 is actually a hormone that our body produces regularly, and that hormone regulates blood sugar, it helps with digestion, and it also helps curb our appetite.

So when someone is taking a GLP-1 medication, what it does is it enhances or mimics that hormone in our body that maybe we don't have enough of. , So the easy way to explain all of that is that it slows our digestion down It turns down the volume on our hunger, which essentially makes us eat less, which is why it's also been so successful and why we're hearing so much about it, is that it really has garnered more success than weight loss medication in the [00:23:00] past.

The thing about GLP-1s that you have to be mindful of is that they, you can see numbers move on the scale. You can experience a different relationship with hunger, so they change the way you eat, but, they don't help you build other habits. They don't help with lifestyle changes to preserve protein, to build muscle.

It really just changes your appetite and how your body, how quickly your body digests food.

Audra Dinell: So you have certain health and fitness certifications, and you've recently gotten a certification in GLP-1. Is it to help people- Mm ... do just that instead of the yo-yo dieting goal-oriented ways of the past of, like- Yeah

eat less, hit the goal, and then you can go back to your normal life. [00:24:00] You're seeing that like, okay, GLP-1s are now a version- Mm-hmm ... of helping people to eat less, but they need support.

Kendra Moody: Yeah. So GLP-1s aren't designed to be on for forever, and so it's really important for people who are taking them to build a foundation and habits that support the lifestyle they want to live after that medicine's gone.

Because once you take that out, your relationship with hunger will change again. Your body will start to digest food more quickly, and so what do you have as tools in your tool belt to navigate that once you're off the medication? And so that is the program that I built is, part is to help walk alongside people who are on GLP-1s to build these foundational habits so that, one, they can have more success while they're on the medication, [00:25:00] but two, if and when their goal is to eventually get off, they don't have to worry about, "Okay, is all this weight gonna come back?"

No, because I have these foundations built, and we talk about protein, movement, sleep. We talk about managing social situations, and all the things that are important to consider when you're having something that's kind of altering how you approach food, so that way once it goes away, you have these, these

Audra Dinell: habits in place.

So it sounds like could be, talk to your doctor- Yeah ... a support for a goal- And building habits that will sustain that goal completion are pretty important.

Kendra Moody: Yeah. And I'm definitely not, I don't recommend them. I don't not recommend them. I'm not someone that's going to say who should or should not be on them.

Healthcare providers are a [00:26:00] great way to start. There are lots of clinics here in town, um, in Wichita that prescribe them and they also do evaluations to say, "Okay, is this the right path for you?" I provide the lifestyle coaching to go alongside of that and, just building the habits that can enhance and support.

Audra Dinell: Okay, awesome. Yeah.

Do This Not That
---

Audra Dinell: So let's play a quick round of do this, not that. Oh, my favorite. Kendra Moody version.

Kendra Moody: Okay. Okay. So- Do this, not that. Intermittent fasting. Ooh, this is a good one. So I would say we're starting off great, 'cause it depends. Awesome. Perfect. Yeah. Very clear. So- Very clear. Yes, very clear.

Always gray. Intermittent fasting is a great tool, and intermittent fasting can add more stress to your body because you are [00:27:00] essentially fasting and not giving it food. So if you are a person who is in a high-stress job, if you know that you are already in a stressed state, maybe your hormones aren't working as efficiently, intermittent fasting can make that even worse.

So the thing that I always encourage women to do is experiment. Try it and see if you like the results. The most important thing with intermittent fasting is not viewing it as a tool to eat less.

Audra Dinell: Okay.

Kendra Moody: It is truly about the timing of when you're eating. We all fast. We all do about a probably 10 to 12-hour fast from the time we f- finish eating in the evening till when we wake up.

Audra Dinell: Mm-hmm.

Kendra Moody: So not all fasting has to be at the beginning of the day. It could be you stop eating at 4:00 PM and don't eat again till breakfast. So you can experiment with it during different parts of the day, but [00:28:00] it's not a thing to do to eat less. It's truly about the timing, and you always wanna break your fast with- Water

protein.

Audra Dinell: Oh, dang it.

Kendra Moody: Darn it. Water, too- Okay ... but protein. I'm

Audra Dinell: like, "Coffee." No. Yes. I didn't say coffee. Coffee. No. No, no, no.

Kendra Moody: Okay. Second do this, not that. Okay. Hard workouts. Hard workouts can be effective when you are working towards a specific goal. My sisters and I have talked about doing a HYROX competition.

Oh, yeah. And so there, when we decide to do that, there will be hard workouts, and that's for a season. But not every workout has to be hard and strenuous. If you're doing body weights, if you're doing slow movements, that is just as good for your body and sometimes even better because it's not hard on your joints.

So I would say that not every workout needs to be [00:29:00] viewed through the lens of, how hard can I push my body?

Audra Dinell: But if you're in a season of wanting to hit some sort of competitive- Yeah ... goal, then yes- You're gonna- ... you're gonna be working out harder. Yeah.

Kendra Moody: Or any goal. If you want to build your arms, if you want to build muscle in your legs, know that you can push yourself, but you don't have to do it to a point where it's detrimental.

Audra Dinell: Okay.

Kendra Moody: Do this, not that. Lifting weights. Always lift weights. I know that you're like, "Gosh dang it, don't tell me that." I just

Audra Dinell: love to do yoga, please. I know.

Kendra Moody: Do yoga with weights. As we age, our body will, our muscles will naturally deteriorate, our bones will become more brittle, and so it is so important for our physical structure and health to lift weights.

The other this not that that I believe ties into that is that weights will not make us bulky. It is [00:30:00] physically impossible for women to build the amount of muscle that we see on men, or maybe in women who are competing, without doing additional enhancements or supplements. And so weights will not make you bulky, even if you're lifting 25 pound dumbbells, 35 pound dumbbells.

It, physically our bodies can't do that without additional supplementation. And so really when women are seeing individuals and like, "I want that body type," I guarantee you they're lifting weights, and they're lifting heavy weights, and they're doing it several times a week.

Audra Dinell: I did lift up to a 35 pound kettlebell today.

I'm so proud of

Kendra Moody: you. Thank you. Okay, last one. Do this, not that: rest days. Rest days, this is where I've learned a lot over my journey. I used to be a seven day a week worker outer, even when we are, when we were on vacation. Oh, I remember. You can attest to that. I remember. , And so I have [00:31:00] grown to have a very different relationship with rest days, and that is being that rest days are part of the growth and the journey.

They're not something that happens when you finally feel like you need one or at the end when you've exhausted your entire tank and you're just depleted. Rest days have to happen along the journey in order for you to continue to grow. I like to have one to two rest days a week, and that's not to say that my rest day is I lay on the couch and do nothing.

Maybe I take a leisurely walk. Maybe I'm doing some stretching as I lay down on the floor, or maybe I am being totally inactive and doing a movie marathon. That's okay. Yeah. It's more about the mindset and giving your body that time to recover so that you can continue to go.

Audra Dinell: Okay. So rest days are part of the journey, not a reward.

right. Okay. I think this is so [00:32:00] helpful because for many people, looking at health and fitness as black and white has been hurtful and caused a lot of stop-starts, and I just feel like the way you approach it makes it so accessible no matter where people are coming in from.
